1:37 Did you actually use that little toilet in the room! I've seen one at a museum (slumber coach) they are SOOO SMALL! And the room is so tiny! Or did you just use the communal one? Also, I would be terrified if I clogged that thing, and it spilled all over my stuff! (Happened to me on a UK train once) My shoes will never be the same LOL. Also, it must have been found having it next to your head, could you hear the tracks rushing beneath?
I dont know why Amtrak didnt rehab the slumbercoaches and kept them in service. I mean look at Via Rail. the trainset on the Canadian dates to about the same time period (mid 1950s) and they rehab those cars and they look amazing. sure is a lot of jointed rail. The main reason Amtrak moved the LSL to its 930pm is so people coming from western trains dont get stranded in Chicago because all the eastbound trains had already left by the time the late train(s) got to Chicago.
I miss the slumbercoaches too. I understand the two big reasons they were retired were (a) no way to make them ADA compliant, and (b) the toilets discharge sewage onto the tracks, which is no longer allowed. (That was why there was a sticker on the toilet telling you not to flush when the train was at a station).
Well, these were the Slumbercoaches, and if I remember correctly, were only on a few Amtrak trains. They ran for many years on the Lake Shore Ltd, until the Viewliners showed up.
