i wish this show was still on TV
I cant believe how unbelievably rude, and heartless our world has become. I took this video at face value, for what it was intended to provide. An entertaining and educational look at the Acela. Since the dawn of social media, everyone has become the ultimate expert in criticising the honest effort of an individual with the lowest form of knuckle scraping language, that believe it or not, still offends. Kudos to the creator of this video. Im sure there will be many who will tell me to f... off in their illiterate righteous indignation. So be it. I will never return to this post. So have at it.
Patricia Higley Hehe, awesome way to annoy the heck out of haters!
Couldn't have said it better!
Yeah people are so rude to Acela!
I Have A Serious Crush On You Amtrak Acela Express Trains
*Because that's what heroes do*
good job for standing up to the haters, the Acela Regional and Acela Express are some of my favorite trains and i'm proud to finally see another comment agreeing with me.
Hey M'urica ! welcome in the 2000's
Europ and Japan have bullet trains since the 80's
Cheers !
VERY GOOD AND INERESTING VIDEO!!!!
I traveled on high speed trains in other countries. I can understand why the commentator was so excited. My next mission is the NE corridor at 150 mph!
The power car 2021 is actually one that was leading the train when serving as 2158 to Boston on October 8,2021.
Fantastic video! So cool how you show all of the pieces and people that come together to make the Acela possible!
I love the first gen Acela. These trains hold a special place in my heart. The first highspeed train in the US, introduced the year I was born. A pioneer in the US highspeed rail industry. And I’m never gonna get to work on one. I bet if Amtrak really put some thought into it, they can try to extend the current sets’ lifespan by at least another 10 years. We’ve got commuter trains and subway cars that are nearing 40 years old. Why can’t the Acela go in for a full-on overhaul? Because Amtrak execs don’t know how to extend a train’s lifespan.
Also, I wish this documentary showed more views inside the powercar’s machine room. I’ve only seen glimpses of it from first class, and can’t find any good pics of it online. My curiosity is driving me nuts.

I have to agree with Insta Goat, this was way over the top and pandered to the enth degree that I actually felt sympathetic for how hard they tried to play it up. The narrator was so personable and humble, never cracking edgy jokes or creating awkward moments.
"I wouldn't be getting paid Friday." lmao
the Acela sure is fast, it also has tech to tilt on curves
The Railfanning Birdwatcher
Uhh. If I recall, this version of the Acela doesn’t have tilting technology, but the new trainsets do have the technology.
The original Acela Train sets which are these in this documentary do actually have tilt technology.
@@jlmscringe7530I think it's only in the cars and not the power cars
Thanks for posting! I think this is a fantastic train addition for this countries vast yet slowly decaying railway network. Alstom is a beast when it comes to churning out these TGV and AGV behemoths. However, I have never found them to be very aesthetically pleasing when compared to the bullet trains of China and the N700 Shinkansen of Japan. They just seem to be sleeker and more appealing to the eye, but on the same note, attractiveness is not the main point behind high speed rail, and if the Acela functions as a legit HSR for the Northeast rail corridor, then I am content with that. After all, it's not about what I want but what works for the corridor and the countless hoards of passengers that need this long overdue addition to the corridor!
I actually have this documentary downloaded on my old iPod classic. Did this years ago.
Hope to get on in 2021 in time for 50th anniversary
186 MPH here in the UK on HS1 and sometimes you don't feel you're moving its that smooth.
John Walsh Shut up. Stop fucking bragging. You wanna know what the fuck we do better than you snobby brats? We make better horns. YOU WILL NEVER see a K5LA on an E320! The Acela has the BEST doppler effect you’ll see on a bullet train you fucking hater. Take that shit.
@@Vxllain fucking dumbass the trains in the us are shit compared to china and japan
Joshua mast I’m pretty sure you shouldn’t be calling me a dumbass when you can’t even spell it
Also, you dont even get 186 MPH on HS1, only 145 MPH
Joshua mast Why do you assume they are bad just due to speed
The " host " is a former Maine Central brakeman who was hired to host the " Extreme Trains " series of tv programs. There are 10 shows. When they first announced it I thought great that would be interesting and I was working as a locomotive engineer at the time when I saw the first show. Your absolutely correct, this guy makes a mockery of every rail worker in the US and Canada.
The Pennsy was America's Passenger Line and the Norfolk and Western was America's freight line on the east coast that is.
good video
Beautiful show
it go to newark as well witch is in new jersey just to put that in there
I died laughing when he said "lightning fast".
This brings back memories I watched this show when I was a kid it's a shame how the Acela is being retired
Its being replaced by the acella Express
@@joshuamast5128 actually the new Acela is being replaced by the Avelia Liberty
@@Josephcavagnaro I thought they were calling it the Express still
The US doesn't have the population density required to support high-speed rail lines outside of the Northeast, parts of California, and MAYBE Florida and Central Texas. And possibly the immediate area around Chicago. They would be a huge drain on the taxpayers anywhere else. Western Europe is smaller than the US and has more people.
Nonamearisto that’s true, because most of the cities in America are spread further away from each other, apart from the northeast region where most of the bigger cities are concentrated.
All your video which you make about trains they are nice but the quality is like you made this documentary in 90
This isn't a documentary, this is a movie. It's in my house.
I love this documentary. Just terrific. I learned a lot about the Acela. I just don't like the whole tie section from like the 1970's

nice work.
Great Train. Hype-video.
LOL! Bullet Train? 150 mph. Damn that's fast! [Sarcasm off] ;-)
Haha, there were a few times where they sped up the film to make the train look faster!
I built the cabs. Plattsburgh, NY.
I can not imagine that America only 20 huge speed trains but England has more than 100
+winkymick Driving is better. Leave when I want. That is why America doesn't have that many trains.
+pete5668 On the social level, driving is good but not environment friendly. For me, train ride is way more enjoyable than driving a car for hours on end. However, I have to say, most trains (except the expensive Acela) are so slow in the States that sometimes I get bored.
For Americans, it's not about enjoyment of the journey, really. It's about freedom to travel when you want, where you want.
+pete5668 Freedom to travel whenever and wherever you want is also part of my definition of enjoyment. If the States has a more extensive rail network, this freedom can be easily achieved. Also, in terms of speed, cars are not that great compared to the high speed trains (operating at about 350 km/h).
+pete5668
Driving allows freedom, i agree. I also prefer to drive my car in Germany on the Autobahn than using an ICE train.
But the speed limit on US highways is so strict, that even the freedom you have in a car is no match to a train that drives at a speed over 200 km/h.
In Germany this is different. While you could use the ICE driving at over 200 km/h for everything the missing speed limit on the Autobahn allows you to compete with the ICE. In the end, the ICE only wins with larger distances, but at long distances the airplane gets also better.
Never mind about the camara thing
At first I had a question...
As a Canadian, but thinking for America, I wondered when they would see the Acela go South of D.C.
However perhaps about 2/3 the way through the video came the answer: money, and the infrastructure cost.
One day I would have liked to go from Montreal to Boston by rail, then do the Acela to D.C. and back, but it seems nobody goes Amtrak from Montreal to Boston because the Adirondack southbound arrives in Rensslaer N.Y.after the train from the west thaat goes through Rensslaer to Boston South.
While it would not be impossible it would make no sense as one would have an overnight in Rensslaer, and possibly another in Boston before being able to get on the Acela south.
If my guess is right that train comes from Chicago, and would have to return there. That seems like a nice add-on to the Acela Network, but possibly even better for going west might be from Penn Station or PHiladelphia to Chicago, via Harrisburg, Pittsburgh and Cleveland.
At age 71, I have seen over 1 million Km. not to mention fly and drives in 3 languages in Canada, The U.S. and Dominican Republic. But I no longer drive due to health issues.
Maybe, in time I will have the chance when I can afford it to do the Acela ride.
... And maybe then, Amtrak will have opened an Acela route south to Jacksonville, Tampa and Miami.
Born in France, The TGV is such a common sight that I am far less impressed than an American when I see a bullet train. I take it tons of time. They have double-deckers ones, low cost no frills ones, and the First Class Eurostar that gives out a free continental meal, wines and all you can drink coffee and tea.
But Americas freight trains are the bomb.
SiriusXAim But America has lower tax rates, cheaper gas, cheaper cars/car insurance, & vehicle registration
Take your pick! Lol
+lovin f30
And a ridiculous speed limit on the highway.
The video is great it's unfortunate that youtube butchered it with the "suggested stabilization"
how a amtrak railroad drawbridge work at 33:33 and 35:44 ?
I want Walk bridge
In a few months, the US is getting another high speed train with similar design in Florida called Brightline. Unlike Acela, it is going to be diesel-electric similar to HST 125. The max speed for Brightline is 125mph, the minimum speed in the US to be considered a high speed train.
DarcyWLincoln, have you heard that the northeast region is getting an upgrade? Even the acelas will be replaced soon
Why is the video in 360p ;-;
Anyway, I still enjoyed it. I hope we could get some high speed trains here in Canada. Trains are actually fun to ride and I would like to see them get better.

America has the best railway system on the planet!
I Really Have A Serious Crush On You Amtrak Acela Express Trains ❤️❤
Fun fact: The Glacier Express train, which drives through the Swiss Alps, is with a maximum speed of 40 mph the slowest high speed train in the world :)
Interesting
Lol
I've been one one of those trains.
Video appears to be out of focus a lot of the time !
I am in Illinois so nothing like this for us. enjoy your ride that we must pay for !
Like in all American "documentaries," this production about what could be an interesting subject is turned into a mockery of "edutainment" with the stock, generic rock music and stupid host who sounds like he's on Adderall, constantly waving his hands and yelling about how "cool" stuff is without going into any detail. Shame.
I feel like this is one of the documentaries that I watched when I was a kid.
Actually this is untrue there are many American docs that are very level headed. BTW this is not a doc it is an reality TV series.
Amercia makes their only high speed train look like a slow derp.
Ur just jealous because u know ur not as smart as him and know u never will be.
As much as I love my country, I'm always embarrassed with the transportation system here. Germany has the Autobahn while we have freeways and bridges that never allow free flowing. Japan and Europe has the best HST's while we only have 150mph top speed only allowed in pockets of a corner system in the entire country. We still have primitive looking local buses and subways. Not nearly as attractive as other countries who fully embrace the ideas of modernizing. It just seems while all other countries are working hard to keep ahead of the curve, the most powerful nation is still ten to twenty years behind the 21st century. Sometimes I can't help but wonder what it would be if the country was run by corporation instead of the bureaucratic system.
American car company and bus CONSPIRED along with interstate battery's, michellin tires and oil Co's to kill rail in the 1930's . they succeded . we had a vast rail network from trolly's to street cars, to subways and commuter rail and passanger rail. and they killed most of it off. by buying the backrupting rail and then shutting it down and converting it to buses, which use guess what ? gasoline, batteries, tires !!!!
Just look at an Europeen autobahn exchange and how smootly traffic flows and then look at the narrow and reducing radius of most exchange here if one can call them that way.....once again, its the engineering....stupid !
Nelsido Mejia Don’t be embarrassed by how fast our train can go, 150 mph is still plenty fast. And consider that the train has been tested at speeds up to 165 mph, so there’s no way that the Acela isn’t fast
what is wrong with the video??? it keeps zooming in and out and moving side to side. is that RUclipss strange anti shake filter?
The RUclips stabilization feature being enabled on this…..not great
Great documentary, not a great stabilization feature by RUclips
I've been on it
How many trains goes over the bridge 34:04
Why was the show discontinued
The TGV and EuroStar would smoke this Acela. Stop being so safe America be like the rest of the world: High speed and fun.
Does anyone know the music that is used when Matt talks about the train accident in New York?
"The Acela is no regular train, it can tilt." That has been around since the 70s...
The tower of Pisa tilt too...but sooner than later it will fall over.
Preparations are being made to add Raleigh, Greensboro, Charlotte, Atlanta, and New Orleans.....in the distant future. All of the Norfolk-Southern mainline from Washington to Atlanta is being improved to handle high speed rail. Curves are being taken out, bridges replaced to higher standards, crossings removed, etc. There's still tons of work left before we'll see it happen, if it ever does.
This is the reason why our nation doesn't need high speed rail. We already have this as an alternative
+J Adachi this is high speed rail you idiot. blow me
Outdated before it was completed. Very few places it gets up to speed. Cheaper to fly and much faster
why doesnt via rail canada have this????
Historical legacy of the Pennsylvania RR with no equivalent in Canada, different population density, lack of community will, money.
Nice documentary, but unfortunately it's incomplete. What about the special signalling high speed tracks need & what about the remote traincontrol systems...??? These Amtrak-trains looklike copies from the European TGV-trains. However in Europe (especially in France) such TGV-trains do have special tracksignalling, because riding at 200 MpH you are hardly able to distinguish a red sign from a green one. It also means that such trains carry computerized systems that could influence speed whenever it needs to and that system could remotely be operated by someone at the trackcontroll centre.
They look the same because they are designed by the same company
Uh Matt for the TGV its 188mph not 190mph, failed calculation on your part there.
I like how the thumbnail for this video is a thumbnail for a route in traim simulator 2017
Who else was at kingston station when an acela was very very late and the reason why it was so late was because the front power car's pantographs weren't working right?
I like your Acela trains because there awesome and super fast
"They're awesome..."
Awesome trains but a little bit pricy.
$$$$$$$$$
Fast.... Don't make me laugh... It's lame and slow. Build a new real High Speed Line and link the cities at a proper way. Speeds up to 200 mp/h are common these day. Well... in Europe and Asia anyway.
Maarten, America has good train transportation in the south like Colombia. But the USA abandoned trains for cars and planes except for freight. Those trains are slow and old fashioned. But this still works pretty well.
Much of the USA public either drives or flies. So the funding isn't there for modern passenger trains. And I miss them when in the USA. In UK I can take a train nearly any place and don't have to wait long.
EXTREME TRAINS!

Wait till 2021 when the Acela is retired :( but luckily for something way better though :)

When was this made? I'm pretty sure the cities sprinter locomotives, AEM-7's, HHP-8's, DDA40X's, and 3rd Generation GTEL's are higher in power than the acela powercars.
I don't get why they did choose as crash example a crash of a transrapid instead of a train
Amtrak should instead have a contract with the Japanese Shinkansen. But that would be expensive, but more faster, safest, and maybe the best.
true but it will still have to go slow on the NEC since freight trains also run on the NEC so that 350 kph bullet train will just go as fast an on track Acela.
I miss Extreme trains
3:17 Survey says wrong! One locomotive that puts out more horsepower is the NJT ALP-46 at 7,108 HP! (I knew it was baloney when I heard it.)
Yes that is true, however I was listing A locomotive that has a higher horsepower rating, not necessarily the one with the highest HP Rating.
HHP-8 which is very similar to an Acela power car, literally stands for “High HorsePower 8,000”
Not titled properly. this is an Extreme Trains episode
+Chris Ransdell If The Video was Titled, Extreme Trains: High Speed Train, Then A&E Will take down the video. Don't you remember what happen to CarNutandTrainNut2 when He got his youtube channel taken down because of Copyright Troubles with A&E? And Also, HarveyHenkelmann also got 2 Copyright Strikes from A&E for Posting Trains Unlimited Episodes back in October of 2012 and He has to closed down his channel.
Not bad for America, I noticed on the Amtrak website that it states this is the fastest train in the Western Hemisphere though...when it quite clearly isn't LOL
angloengland What's faster? Mind you the western hemisphere only includes north & south america.
ppkrex The Western hemisphere isn't only North & South America, its everything west of London and since Madrid is west of London for one, that means their trains are the fastest in the Western hemisphere
Don't confuse "Western World", which is a geopolitical concept with "Western Hemisphere", which is a geographical concept. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Western_Hemisphere en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Western_world
ppkrex :) I'm not the one who is confused. I never mentioned the 'Western World'. If you look at the link you posted concerning the 'Western Hemisphere', everything on that projection is the Western Hemisphere...as you can see, its not based on continents as you claim, but is mealy one half of the Earth which is split at London where the Prime Meridian crosses. Hence most of England, Spain, all of Iceland, Scotland, Portugal and alot of Western Africa is part of the Western Hemisphere along with North and South America. Ergo, the Western Hemisphere is not ONLY North and South America. I know for some people the New World, Old World, Western World and Western Hemisphere can be confusing concepts, however you only have to read the second paragraph of your link on the Western Hemisphere from Wikipedia.
i wonder what the actual top speed of that train is unrestricted
I think it’s closer to 150-200mph
What our North American politicians are doing re. Rail infrastructure development?
20 yrs behind China, Japan, Europe, India etc.
Hope, Mr.Trump would do something? I doubt.
I wish this video was 'hosted' by someone who is more professional. This guy is so "golly gee whiz!" Too much feigned awe.
It only takes 6 & 1/2 hours to drive from DC to Boston by car. So this train doesn't save any time
The Acela is a boss in the US
I wish Amtrak still went into Grand Central, which is beautiful. The current Penn Station is very ugly.
Does anyone know what happened to him ????
could you sort out the uk rail then as this gose even fast there uk tillting trains penderlino
it goes "Choo Choo!!!!!!!" lol no offense
150 mph isn't correct. I've seen where it's clocked at an average speed of 200 mph through northern Maryland ( Baltimore to Wilmington ) and central NJ ( 30th St Station to Newark-Penn Station )
But it only goes 80 mph most of the time. It goes 150 mph when there's no trains on its track. But sadly it is very rare for the tracks to not be crowded with Amtrak.
Yeah, in the UK most inter city trains are limited to 125mph, but they max out most of the time.
There is a 186mph line between London and the channel tunnel to France, but the majority is 125.
Amtrak could probably go faster if they wanted to.
Japan did 120 miph in 1963 now their Shinkansen (bullet trains) can do almost 200 mph
A lot of arguments here revolve around the 'coast to coast' comparison with planes. Why is the assumption so readily drawn that people necessarily want to travel from coast to coast? Progressive HSR connections across the country between conurbations is surely the argument.
In general, this doc is really embarrassing. Everything that annoying guy is making so much noise about is old news in the rest of the developed world. 14:57 Amtrak began replacing old ties with concrete ties in 1997!!! FFS!
Keyboard Dancers Given Washington gridlock, it's a miracle that progress was made at all!
Keyboard Dancers You are correct, we need to start with conurbations first before even considering nationwide. But politically no one wants to be left behind, not getting their share of the pork barrel. Frankly, that is the NEC, California, Florida, Texas, and around Chicago. HSR competes with the airlines at distances of less than 400 or so miles, not 800 or 3000 miles. And that is our problem, Chicago is more than 800 miles from New York City, and Miami is more than a 1000 miles from Washington DC, and even if HSR was built to Chicago from New York City, Los Angeles is more than 2000 miles from Chicago.
SeaToby11 V interesting info re the plane/train and distance/competition equations. So it's not simply a question of a (perceived) political aversion to the development of public sector infrastructure? Fascinating how geography can apparently adversely affect certain areas of technological development. I do see what you mean about an ultra fast train (say 200mph) between Chicago and LA - at best it would take ten hours at full speed all the way with no stops!!
+Keyboard Dancers Even in California San Francisco to Los Angeles is close to 450 miles. A distance at the far upper reaches for competitive high speed rail, if not a bit beyond. Notice the northeast corridor of Acela is 438 miles Washington DC to Boston, and 225 miles Washington DC to New York City.
+SeaToby11 I think it may be a bit too easy or even lazy to adopt a rather parochial perspective here in Europe in not readily grasping the huge distances involved in traveling across America. Australians and Russians sometimes point out this failing too.
Is This thing's Top Speed of 150mph Absolute or is it limited by track speed?
The speed is limited by the tracks, crossings, etc. The train is capable to going up to 150 mph but in reality it takes about 6 hours and 45 minutes to travel about 430 miles between Boston and Washington, D.C.with the average speed of 64 mph.
oh okay Thanks
the amtrack of 150 top speed looks silly compared to the European trains. C'mon USA you are lagging way behind. shame on you
The Acela Express is only 25mph faster than the Intercity 125/Class 43 which was introduced in the mid 70s
+Random Crap but in the US there is soo much more space and money available to actually develop a train set and build new Railtracks for it
How fast is that train going again?
K.H.D. Official 150 is the max speed
Andy Cheng I was on Acela at 2am I went 180
Andy Cheng the train engineer said on intercom
K.H.D. Official
Some can go 170+ mph though they were designed for 165 mph. Top speed in service is 150 mph.
So Acela is a electric train?
yes, only certain parts of amtrack are electrified. most of amtrack uses dirty Diesel trains that are slow and pollute.
Duuuuhhhhh.....
+anna agustin. Yep!
anna agustin uh... yeah
This would have taken 3-4 hours on the CRH380
What they don't say is that the Acela Express actually goes at an average speed of around 70mph on its route, while in UK the 40 year old HSTs go at an average speed of around 90mph on the ECML.
Tgv travels at 320 km/h
the Japanese maglev operates at 603km / 375 mph. the fastest in the world.
