One obvious point about Chappell Roan that has been missed here is the sapphic perspective and specificity of her songwriting. The angst of good luck babe is so specific to a queer relationship - this idea that someone who you're passionately in love with could end up in a straight relationship. They hide that part of themselves and pretend that you didnt mean anything and neither did those gay feelings. It works as a romance but it also works on a bigger scale. Any queer listener could relate to the idea that yes, it would be easier not to be gay, but you'd have to stop the world to stop the feeling. It's gorgeously written and constructed, and the depth of those lyrics will give it staying power. BAnd of course, it's just a stellar song in about every way. Those string parts are incredible.
It's very clear from looking at her fan base that they've been wanting a pop star who writes from a blatantly gay point of view (I think the Gaylor madness shows that too)
This!^^^^^ Her queerness is central to her performance, her music, her essence as Chappell, her audience. Sure, you guys mentioned her as a drag artist but… missed a huge attractive part (beyond her talent as a singer/musician!) to the most open minded and queer generation yet 🎉
Ya'll cannot judge Sabrina with just her recent hits. She has insane songs and has been underrated for so long and happy she is getting all the recognition now.
I saw Chappell at coachella. She and Victoria Monet made the trip worth every penny. Incredible stage presence, the mics were on, knew how to work the crowd, sounded even better live. It's been awhile since I've been excited about any artists but seeing artists like these two Renee rapp, Flo, Olivia w gwen (!!!!!!), I'm cautiously optimistic that we are starting to see things balance out. The only bad part of coachella was hearing someone say they already know they can't afford CR's future tour. Pissed me off how right he probably is
I think Sabrina's production borrows a lot from Dua and Ariana, but her lyricism is what sets her apart. There's a common thread of cheekiness throughout her songs, and she does oscillate between more kind of confessional Swiftean pop ballads and uptempo cheeky confident girlie bops like Espresso, Nonsense, Feather. But the sense of humor is maintained throughout. I think she has more of an identity and a vision than most people give her credit for, but only time will bear that out.
Sabrina and Chappell are both capital P performers AND songwriters but they do very very different things, so I'm very excited to see them both continue to rise. They both have a very late 90s early 00s pop mythological flair that is IMO missing in the current landscape.
I feel like a lot of people don’t actually know what they’re talking about when it comes to sabrina (especially seeing these comments). They downplay her artistry. This girl’s talent is on another level - people only listen to her chart-topping songs (which are great), but her overall work is amazing and incredibly diverse. she herself is a very diverse artist her other past albums are next level and ahead of its time. I often feel like I’m hearing the same thing from new artists, but with Sabrina, it’s always a refreshing change. And she can write this girl pen is crazy underrated. Her vocal talent is off the charts, alot of the new girls don't even come close. And let’s not forget about her captivating stage presence. And when someone claims “she sounds like this person” based on one pop song they heard, it reveals how people talk without truly listening to her music, which is stupid. However, it’s understandable since not many people are familiar with her. Sooner or later, that is bound to change as people are discovering and loving her and she’s killing it right now
I kinda need you all to sit down and bring on someone who actually is aware of the way music and culture is changing today… it’s seriously boring to see you basically dismiss these artists as just a combination of smart moves rather than actually being “artists” that warrant your actual critique
I wonder if these old guys are ever gonna figure out Chappell Roan is queer, it's almost funny but actually depressing they say Good Luck Babe is "mean"
yeah, they thought it was mean because they can't relate to being hurt because someone else treats you like you were a fling that meant nothing just to appear heterosexual to the world. they'll never understand that pain as straight men
Y’all saying that “Espresso” should’ve been Dua Lipa’s is honestly is so sad to hear, especially since the style of the song is completely different from what Dua does. Espresso is a pretty much delicate lighthearted italo-disco record, that doesn’t really match Dua’s energy. The song is fun and witty, exactly like Sabrina’s charisma and artistry. She is an incredible performer and has been in the industry for 10 years without really breaking out, so she deserves the spot more than anyone at the moment, so no. It’s her time. Women can co-exist in the music industry and if you want to make a podcast about music at least make some research before spitting out sentences. :)
And just as important, Sabrina wrote the song so why would they even say that? They're supposed to be journalists but can't even do due diligence to credit Sabrina for her own brilliant song, and instead have such a bias against her to assume she's not deserving of a song that belongs to her and no other artist.
@@nwandoe3599 the funny thing is, through this whole video, they were either claiming stuff without researching or doing it in the mean time. They barely remembered Chappell song’s name, when it’s literally their job…
Feels bad, but idg Sabrina. Nonsense was cool, but it's cuz it sounds like a Ariana song. She seems nice but feels like musical beige. I enjoy fun pop songs, but the results feel slightly redundant. It doesn't hit like Water or even Greedy for me. Keep seeing people online say she's the future of pop 😬 ... I think we can (and should) dream a little bigger. I'm desperate for the millennial monopoly on pop culture to end too, but let's keep some standards
@@jackielaurens Yeah I thought similar things about Dua and she won me over with future nolstalgia and I've liked what I've heard on the new album too for the most part. If Sabrina pulls a FN out of her hat I'm happy to be wrong. But right now her music and "brand" feels very anonymous.
@@doomer_zoomerz good to know Dua's album is solid. I was hoping it'd stick the landing. I liked Houdini and Illusion but the internet seems to have it out for Dua this era. Also for Sabrina I suggest her singular act part 1 and 2. I really enjoyed that project though I agree she needs to find her groove in this current moment. Future pop is doing a lot, but I see a Selena type lane for her for sure
@@puredistraction if you contribute to the song in any way, you get a writing credit. Taylor Swift writes all of her own lyrics, but she will sometimes have 2-3 co writers credited on a song because they helped with production. Stop trying to discredit her lol

@@TheMagiciansLeftHand I agree, I’m aware that artists do this. I just don’t think Sabrina does. This is her 5th album, she’s been around longer than people realize. chappell is obviously a mix of kate bush, cyndi lauper, lorde, etc. you named only 2010 influences when she's really more of callback to the 80s/90s like olivia. also you're taking away female artists' agency by acting like A&R and producers give them everything like they're just passive receivers of songs and materials. and of course you don't mention the fact that chappell writes a lot of her songs from a lesbian perspective
Yeah these two artists and songs slap so hard. Been a Chappel fan since last year and a Sabrina fan since Thumbs which is going back! I am so happy to see their talents recognised. Both have amazing voices and aesthetics. Chappel in particular is catapulting at an incredibly fast pace. Going from 1 million monthly listeners at the start of March to 12.5 million monthly listeners and charting on billboard for the first time ever is an absolute feat. And Sabrina has hit the same magic of Say So and dropped the bop of the summer with her first top 10 on billboard. Let's celebrate the next gen of amazing stars!!!
Describing Chappell Roan in makeup as early gaga is WILD. No reference to any possible inspiration or music movements just comparing all these women to other artists from the same decade. Male critic smooth brain

I have an oddly intense parasocial relationship with SC for someone who isn’t a huge fan of the music 😭 I keep waiting for something that feels/sounds like her instead of Ariana Dua etc. Fun lyrics tho! And as someone who was obsessed with red wine supernova like a year and a half ago, love seeing the Chappell Roan Rise ❤️
Haha you think Chappell Roan is not at all like early Gaga? She is repping queer performative culture, drag and intersecting that with Midwest queer representation and repression- just wanting to burst out the seams
Sabrina has been making music for a long time with minimal success. Her career was circling the drain until Taylor Swift saved her with the exposure she provided to her. She needs to strike while the iron is hot and drop a new album ASAP. I am sure even another bland album will be deemed a success due to all the Swifties that will support her.
