    The rectangular cardboard thing is just a protector for the eyeshade during shipping. On an unopened Virtual Boy, it would be placed around the shade to prevent the spongy stuff from getting messed up.

  • @worldsboss
    @worldsboss 3 года назад +18

    Actually I believe the reason for the stand was because Nintendo feared kids strapping it to their heads and running around, potentially endangering themselves. By forcing people to play it sitting down, they avoided that risk.

  • @NoshAbroad
    @NoshAbroad 3 года назад +51

    In Japan, space can be pretty limited... especially in the big cities. "Toys" were often used and put away right after use. It was uncommon to leave game consoles set up and would be put away after use. That would explain the repacking instructions. Poor Gunpei Yokoi "went over to Bandai.." to develop a GameBoy competitor and then died in an unusual traffic accident. A car break checked him on the freeway causing him to crash. He then stepped out of his car and was killed by another car just as he stepped out.

    11:46 Okay so, Panic Bomber isn't exactly the most intuitive puzzle game or anything, but when it clicks and you really get into it it's really fun! Basically here's what you do:
    - Match 3 or more of the same block in a straight line, vertical, horizontal or diagonal, to make bombs appear on your playfield, the more blocks you match the more bombs will appear, and combos will multiply the bombs.
    - At some point you'll get a lit bomb, use it to explode the unlit bombs, they follow Bomberman logic, so they explode in a cross shape and the fire of one bomb will explode the next bomb. The more bombs you explode, the more garbage tiles you send to your opponent's playfield.
    - Try to send as much garbage to your opponent as possible, whichever player fills up their playfield first loses.
    I really love Panic Bomber, it's probably my favourite puzzle game (though I'm not very good at puzzle games lol) this is a very unique take on the genre with a very interesting risk and reward thing going on, oh and, of course, brilliant music, as you'd expect from Bomberman.

    Gunpey Yokoi was NOT fired from Nintendo due to the Virtual Boys commercial failure. He had already decided to retire at age 50 to spend time on his own projects and ideas but delayed that retirement to continue his role at Nintendo per their request. Gunpey Yokoi did not want to release the Virtual Boy as it was, he felt that it needed more work and further refinement, however it was Nintendo who insisted that it be released as they wanted to concentrate development on the N64. When Gunpey finally left Nintendo, several of his staff left with him as Gunpey started the Koto company, which lead to the development of the impressive WonderSwan. Great video but Elliot, please do your fact checking first.

    I'm convinced that part of the VB's failure is that the best games look like a muddle when printed 2D in a magazine or on the box.
    How do you sell a game that ONLY looks good in 3d? I guess you don't.
    "Red Alarm" looks AMAZING ... in 3d. But in a flat image it looks like a child's idea of what a video game should be like.
    "Teleroboxer" is really hard to make out in a flat image. Your gloves kinda blend into your opponent's body. But in 3d it's very clear and the art looks great.
    Same with "Warioworld". The art looks indistinct and muddy in a flat image. But it looks good in 3d.

    I owned one of these shortly after they came out - it was a floor model from Blockbuster, and only one side worked, which sort of defeated the purpose. They were just going to throw it away, so I convinced them to give it to me - because I'm blind in one eye (fortunately the same eye - unfortunately that eye cost me getting a pair of Google Glass later on)
    The biggest challenge as a US owner was finding games for it. I had a total of 4 games - Tennis, Mario Clash, Wario Land, and a japanese copy of Red Alarm. I didn't have any problem playing the games one-eyed, but 100% did get massive headaches from the red after about 30 minutes.

    Wait what? Gunpei Yokoi wasn't fired from Nintendo because of the Virtual Boy.
    He went on to create the Gameboy Pocket, and then resigned. He wanted to go back to making mechanical toys and not video game electronics. He wanted to leave the company on a good note, so that's why he waited until he produced one last successful product before resigning. He wanted his honor intact. If anything, they tried to beg him to stay with Nintendo, because he was the man that basically saved the company from oblivion during their darkest hours.
    After leaving Nintendo, he did form his own company (Koto Labatories) that did contract work for Bandai. But sadly he died in a car accident a year after leaving Nintendo.

    You've got to get the Virtual Boy Wario Land if you haven't. It's actually a really fun game and makes great use of the 3D effect.

    The cardboard is there so the fabric eye piece doesn't get all messed up in transport...

    I had a CIB Virtual Boy collection of all the US released games about 6 years ago. One of the most interesting systems I ever collected for tbh and wish I had kept it lol some of the best captured VB footage that I’ve seen on RUclips at the end though dude.

    Quite a few mistakes here.
    Virtual boy wasn’t released to the rest of the world, it was Japan and America only. Europe missed out.
    Gunpei Yokoi was planning to leave Nintendo for a bit and retired from Nintendo at 55, amid the failure of the Virtual Boy and the launch of the more successful Game Boy Pocket, Yokoi left Nintendo on 15 August 1996 after thirty-one years at the company. Leaving with several of his subordinates to form a new company called Koto, Yokoi led the development of the Bandai WonderSwan handheld gaming machine, then was killed in a traffic accident.
    And you missed out on Wario Land, I own a Virtual Boy and Wario Land and it’s such a hidden gem.

    "I don't think anybody owns 6 of the same batteries..."
    Oh you sweet summer child. We buy our batteries by the 96 packs for $10 here in the states!
    There also was a headband kit you could get for this, like modern VR sets, since you mentioned it.

    Speaking of WonderSwan; You'd figure Gunpei would have used a similar or more advanced sound chip setup than what was used. Why did the Gameboy sound like an angel's voice and the WonderSwan sounded like an out of tune cement mixer?

    i know your not a fan of emulation but i must say there is a VERY on point emulator for this that can be side loaded onto the oculus quest 2 the controller layouts are very similar aswell plus..if the red starts bothing your eyes (and it freaking does FAST) you can change the colors to anything else including greyscale

    Gives me a headache badly every time I see one of those god offal things. I tried one out back in the day at Toys R Us. And walked away with the worse headache and dizziness I ever felt in my life. Trying out the 1st 3DS did that to me to. Only not as bad.
