    As someone who is just starting out in soap making, can you explain one more time why there's extra water if the 50/50 lye solution already has it? Also does the extra water have to be the same amout everytime? I'm excited to get started! :)

    • @makesyofficial
      @makesyofficial  Год назад +2

      Yes of course! We could have made it a 33/66 solution, but we left the extra water portion available for customization. Using our formula, you can add an additional 7oz of distilled water OR use goat milk, aloe vera, or floral waters to customize it. That part is up to you! You can follow our exact formula here: makesy.com/blogs/news/how-to-make-cold-process-soap

    What would happen if you poured the distilled water directly into the 50/50 lye solution, and THEN added the lye water solution into the trinity oil blend? I only ask because I have been watching videos on making cold process soap and I have seen processes where the lye is poured into the distilled water, and THEN the lye water is poured into the oil mixture. However, in makesy's videos, the distilled water is added to the trinity oil blend and THEN the 50/50 lye solution is added to the oil mixture.

    • @makesyofficial
      @makesyofficial  8 месяцев назад +1

      that step is only necessary in other videos because they are making their lye from scratch :) since ours is already 50% water and 50% lye, (easy peasy), you should add the water to your oils to avoid your 50/50 from heating up prior to being ready to combine with your oils.

  • @RNDiva33

    I have a question because you have the oil in an oil melter.Was the oil really hot?And was this considered cold process or hot?

    • @makesyofficial
      @makesyofficial  6 месяцев назад

      Great question! This is cold process method. We have the oils in the melter heated to just above room temperature. This is not necessary if you are in a warmer climate, but they should be between 80-90 degrees. Cold process typically involves heating up oils and butters you may be using. The difference is that with hot process, you will actually "cook" the soap in a melter or crockpot for an extended period of time, which helps accelerate saponification!

      Cold process is easy, not sure what you are referring to as "the process was to hard" there are plenty of calculators that give you the exact formula for lye / water / superfat / fragrance down to the gram, no need to spend money buying something from someone that you can easily prepare yourself, you won't be making any money doing it that way, the process you are buying as a product, is no different to the process you would make yourself, it's the same cold process, either you pay someone else to give it to you so you will make less profit, or you mix the oils yourself, pretty simple.

    This is amazing, thank you so much for sharing. I think I have done some of these principles in my young 6 month of soap making, without putting all the pieces together. On at least 2 occasions (I've made about 22 different batches of soap bars now), I got bars that were solid, hard, dry, soapy, and ready to use two days later, I could tell. I put it down to 10ml of Sodium Lactate. I had made and used 50:50 water/lye premix with a high water discount as I knew that is the minimum ratio a person could go to; and I even added 70g of Aloe Juice to make up the extra water/liquid to add in. I used either a lot of coconut or palm oil in the recipe also - and these so works. It appears correct that Coconut, Palm & Olive oils are the perfect combination, said by a number of established soapers online too. What amazes me, is the simplicity of weighing the bars daily until they weigh the same 3 days in a row, for early soap labelling. I've master batched water/lye 50:50 at 1 litre at a time a few times. I would love to get an electric Wax/Oil Melter too and master batch about 3kg of oils, especially the Trinity Oils (love the name by the way!). I notice from Makesy's blog that 0.22% of KOH, potassium hydroxide, is in the recipe bag? Do I need to add that? Thank you for this video - if it takes me two days to make soap safe, and can leave to quietly evaporate, until i gift it or promote it, that is a great game changer for me. Bless ya, from the UK.

    • @makesyofficial
      @makesyofficial  Год назад

      Yes the KOH is a type of lye that is necessary to make soap from oils :) It's not an extra ingredient but rather a type of lye that you can use. Hope that helps!

    • @nicolemitchell446
      @nicolemitchell446 Год назад

      You can masterbatch your own oils without a wax/oil melter. Checkout soaping 101 channels video on masterbatching oils. You basically just melt your hard oils, combine them with your liquid oils and that’s it. Place you bucket in a sink of hot water for 15mins or so till it’s clear, give it a mix and pour out what you need.

    • @nicolemitchell446
      @nicolemitchell446 Год назад

      Ps. KOH is a lye used to make liquid soap or used in combination with sodium hydroxide to create varying degrees of softness, viscosity or thickness. It is absolutely not required to make regular bar soap. To make your own trinity blend just use equal parts palm coconut and olive. Run the quantity you wish to use through a lye calculator and it will give you the amount of sodium hydroxide you need. I don’t know why their pre-made blend contains it (possibly to make it a proprietary blend for legal reasons) but it is absolutely not required. The ‘trinity’ without the KOH has been a time tried and tested recipe used by probably every soap maker at least once. To patent something it has to be unique in some way. That would be my best guess as to the inclusion of KOH in their blend.

    In this video you mention using 8oz of distilled water. Your recipe link mentions 7oz. Which is correct? Also, what if I am using FO from another company? You don't have as large of a selection for FO so I buy other scents form other companies. I've used this recipe to a T (aside from the FO) being different and each time my soap comes out too hard and crumbles into pieces when I cut. I've tried it at 22hrs and 18hrs. I'm very confused. Can FO affect it that much!? Or am I missing something else here?

  • @moonshadowessentialssoapsn5287

    I just found ur channel and it’s awesome. One of my batches is 7 lbs. I don’t use a slab mold cause I didn’t wanna get a slab cutter. So, I had my husband make me a long ass loaf mold. I do a 50/50 lye solution. So I don’t worry when I add the coconut milk or goats milk n my purée’s. But I master batch all my oils once every 2 weeks we melt down our oils n butters and mix them well and the butters never harden back up. So if I wanna infuse a soap I do it in the bucket and mark the bucket strain all the oil into a different bucket and I do it from there. I don’t infuse to often but when I do that’s how I do it. All my soaps jell and I wait 3 week’s then I do a ph test n lather check also cause I want it to be mild. But, u answered a question for me. Kinda, when someone makes hot process they cook the soap until it gel and in order for it to gel cause then it comes up to temperature once it’s that temp the soap is done and u can sell it after 48 hrs. So, even though I don’t cook GHE soap to get it to gel I still make sure it gel’s so it has to hit that temperature so, why do ppl say that u can’t sell gelled soap that is made through cold process but, u can sell that same soap if it’s cooked n forced into gel phase that way? They both have to hit the same temperature to reach gel phase so the manner in which it’s made to bring on gel phase. It makes no sense. Even though I do a huge water discount. I use 1 pound of lye and 1 pound of water then I add 3 ounces of water. I don’t know why I do that way I just do. So, why do u have to wait for one n not the other? If u could answer this question that would be great! Thank you! 🖤

      @makesyofficial  Год назад

      Wow! So glad you found and thanks for telling us a little bit about your process. Premixing your lye and water helps the soap reach gel and proper ph faster which is why you don't need to wait. We have another video where we show using PH drops. ruclips.net/video/1229r9NxNLE/видео.html

    • @makesyofficial
      @makesyofficial  Год назад

      Great question! Because of the PH of the soap due to the lye, there shouldn't be any problem with mold as the water evaporates during gel phase! • @makesyofficial
      @makesyofficial  Год назад +1

      hi hi! Sure thing. The soap is safe to use and ready to sell in 2 days after saponification is complete. The water is not fully dissipated after 2 days. We are using a water discount in this formula to help speed up the cure time, but the real key is knowing what your final bar weight will be. If you are making your soaps to sell, you are most likely going to use the same formulas over and over again. Once you determine your final bar weight from a fully cured bar (if you get the same bar weight over a period of 3 days, it is fully cured), you know what to put on your labels moving forward. You can sell a bar of soap that weighs 3.6oz as a 3.5oz bar of soap, if 3.5oz is the final cured bar weight. This will allow you to mitigate the 4-6 week wait time before you can sell, and help scale your business and say yes to more sales opportunities. Thanks for asking this question! Let us know if you have any others!

    I am confused about the 50/50 lye solution and extra water. How is it different adding the water to the oils first, than it is making the lye more diluted?
    Also, how do I determine how much water to use in the oils separate from the 50/50 solution for my own soap formula? Were you saying that you can add up to the amount of water in the lye solution? So if I have a 50/50 solution of 5.5oz lye/5.5oz water, I can add up to 5.5oz of extra water in my oils before adding the Lye solution?
    Sorry for all of my confusion! Lol

      Hi! Great questions! Happy to help. There is a chemical process that takes place with the 50/50 lye solution that allows the soap to cure more quickly. We talk more about this in this video here: ruclips.net/video/1229r9NxNLE/видео.html
      For determining your own water use, you'll want to make sure you use a soap calculator to figure our how much water to use. Hope that helps!!

      Yep it can! It only needs to be at 80-90F so you don't need to get it too warm. When we use it in our wax melter, we heat on low for around 10 minutes before starting. If you're in a hot climate, you may be able to get away without heating at all. Stir before you use it, to ensure all ingredients are fully combined :)

      If you want to use zero water in your formula, you wouldn't be able to use the 50-50 lye solution. At about 3:10 you talk about the Lye concentration and I just want to clarify something. When formulating a soap recipe, first the oils are determined (types & quantity) then the amount of lye is determined to saponify the oils (with superfat as desired). If too much LYE is used as it relates to the OILS then that would be "LYE HEAVY". The amount of water used to dissolve the lye has nothing to do with a soap being lye heavy. After lye is calculated, the amount of water/liquid is determined based on many factors, including: additives, experience of soapmaker, etc. Many soap calculators default the water to "38% water as a % of oils" because most people are beginners and will benefit from a safer lye solution that contains more water. A 50/50 lye solution with water is extremely dangerous and should only be used by someone who thoroughly understands the risks!

    • @makesyofficial
      @makesyofficial  Год назад

      Hi Jodi! Thank you for sharing. Can you elaborate on the danger you're speaking of so we can understand better? We have created a pre-mixed 50/50 lye solution that soap makers can buy without having to mix their own. No additional lye is necessary when using this recipe. makesy.com/blogs/news/how-to-make-cold-process-soap

    These videos are just creating confusion for everyone, sorry to say you are making such a fanfare about some magical formula but not actually explaining anything about this so called magical formula even though the videos say we are going to explain everything, so you are using a 50/50 water / lye solution, nothing special about that, all this is about is trying to sell your "special" trinity mixture, which is most likely 1/3 olive 1/3 coconut 1/3 palm, then you bang on an on about scaling your business, and show the most inaccurate way to cut a soap loaf using a cheap blade cutter that creates crooked bars, definitely won't be upscaling a soap making business using a cutter like that.

    • @makesyofficial
      @makesyofficial  Год назад +2

      Hi there! We are so sorry to hear that you feel that way. To clarify, we have had excellent success using the 50/50 lye solution which is a pre-mixed batch which saves makers time and energy. All you need are your oils, fragrances, and solution. We do recommend using a larger scale soap cutter but this tutorial was for the entry level makers who likely will get started cutting by hand.

      @tennilledenton4678 Год назад

      @diagrier9963 why wouldn't you just make your own lye solution? Why would you use theirs? Soaping at a 50/50 solution is for extremely seasoned shapers and should not be used for beginners. Use soapCalc and make your own lye solution. By the time they add their addional water the lye solution is technically a 33% concentration so why not just make your own lye solution?
