A Triumph TR3A to Warm Up a Cold Morning

- This Tuesday morning’s highly caffeinated Morning Coffee original film series serves up a hot-pressed shot of espresso in the form of a sinister 1959 Triumph TR3A.
We find our focused petrolhead protagonist, Stadler Patrick, standing roadside, looking out over one of many idyllic valleys in the French countryside. As the day comes to life in the early morning light, total silence is only interrupted by the singing of birds and cool blowing winds-that is, until Stadler marches with purpose to the driver’s door of his old British roadster.
The crunch of gravel under his soles stops at the metallic click that announces an open entrance into the cockpit, and a deliberate pull of the low-slung door being shut precedes the less-than-sedate drive ahead. Stadler’s demeanor makes it clear he’s on a mission to motor with earnest enthusiasm. Settled into the saddle, he twists the key in the center dash-mounted tumbler and gives the long pedal a jab of throttle, abruptly awaking the inline-four cylinder to a chattering idle.
First gear is engaged, the clutch is released in opposition of throttle application, and forward motion begins as the needle in the rev-counter climbs. Perforated brown leather driving gloves tightly encase the white knuckles within, gripping the intricate black and polished metal steering wheel. The pace quickens.
The Triumph’s sealed-beam eyes spear warm light as the fender-to-fender-wide grille devours the winding rural B-roads of Haut-Rhin in France's greater Alsace area. Banging up and down through the four-speed gearbox, Stadler locks up the front disc brakes, killing the built momentum. Paused at a fork in the road, our driver clenches his hands tighter around the wheel with the distinct sound of distressed leather wrinkling under pressure. He contemplates which path to take.
The snow-embanked route is chosen after brief deliberation, and the spirited sprint continues. After a scenic ascent up the mountainside's ribbon of roadway, the TR3A’s tires squeal out of view. This is driving. This is automotive nirvana. This is better than the very best French roast money can buy.

Never has a TR3 looked so fast.
now that's the way to drive the TR3! Drift into corners like its made to do. One of the quickest in corners in its days. And the tr2 won the first Macau grand prix. Beautiful car!
Filmed in France, great! My country! A super fast daddy! :-)) It's located in "Alsace", near Germany. And, as we say in France for the music (it's working too for video): "If you think it's too fast, maybe you're too old!" :-) But, the man who drives the TR3A is always young! Great video, thank you!
Brings the memories flooding back. I had a TR-3B in the 60s.
Making that Triumph appear fast...brilliant. Very nice car with a beautiful exhaust note.
The pure joy of driving, agree 100%.
I liked it, and nice job reimagining the TR3 as a handful, which it can be if prepared well and driven hard.
I enjoyed this video and understand what people are saying below. That said, this owner fits the car, just needed an old racing helmet and goggles to complete the look! You could see the intensity in his face, every shift with a purpose, I felt like I was sitting right there in the car. Its all about driving a slow car fast and captured right here, thanks Petrolicious!
That guy is... Real deal man! 😍
This was an interesting and aggressive film style for a car that is typically seems so "smiley" and cute! I really liked this.
I like it... don't get me wrong... especially the sound... BUT... I prefer the story behind the car and the owner... But I like it :)
It's the sound of the 60's, right there!
I loved the detail in the sounds of this video... It just needs that sound of the car driving on a crunchy pebble drive.
This was my father's first car he bought used with his, at the time, life savings, and his was also black. His had a failed 2nd gear syncro and a Kool-Aid bag in the gas tank, that caused many hours of debugging with replaced fuel pumps, and guesses about hydraulic lock. One mechanic working on the car (to find the fueling issue) leaned on the taillamp, and the glass lens popped out of the gasket, smashing on the ground. The cut down doors were great fun, allowing them to drag Coke cans on the road throwing sparks (tin cans back then). When he came back from a break from college (he kept the car at home), he asked my grandfather where his Triumph was. He responded, "I did you a favor and sold that piece of junk and got you a Valiant." :^o
I like these short movies!
Great little vid. Thanks
So the TR3 might be slow, the guy driving is using the car as intended and is enjoying every minute.
Oh man, I love Tues mornings. thanks to petrolicious I get to wake up to a great video of someone properly driving a quintessential British sports car.
This was fantastic. Absolutely lovely.
Well done! Sometimes, no words are needed. You managed to make a good video even if I guess the guy was not ready to talk.
love it.
I really enjoyed this video, definitely much different to the normal ones posted. but I loved it!
Small engines and skinny tires, what a great combo!!
beautiful car , great video !
came back to enjoy this one this morning....one of my favorite 'petrolicious' of all time
While the visual style of this video is great I don't think it fits the car well at all. A Group B homologation special or an 80s hot hatchback would have been better matches for this.
Yea races existed before the 80s and the 3 was very successful. Sorry to burst your "we invented the world" trip..
Excellent insight! I look forward to seeing YOUR film which uses an appropriate car. It's been nine months, so I'm sure you've produced it by now, but I'm having trouble finding it... Any chance you could post a link? :->
The best 2:15 of total information for the senses sans the smell from British oil or feel of brisk morning air. Love the style of filming with quick segments filled with detail which lead me into 4:30 of pleasure just to review the smallest details, well done once again.
LOVE IT !!! Funnest cars in the world to drive. Great Video
Thanks! This short film reminded me of going to brunch with my uncle in a way words couldn't have. :-)
Nice film. Every video doesn't have to be a ten minute story behind the owner of the car, etc. I suspect the editing was a result of the rough roads leading to an unfortunate amount of shaky cam.
the Camara work makes the car seem faster and more dynamic then it actual is also stock breaks are really good
One of the very best "Petro" videos ...
Why all the hate for this video? It's great. Its exciting. Nice change from the long winded back in the day stories (which I also enjoy).
This editing was amazing ! Keep it up guys 👌 This coffee series is great !
Just like the old movie action scenes. Love it. Also good to see a chap enjoying his car and not sticking it in a garage as a static display.
Great flimwork! Like a one car, car chase!!
Nice! Enjojed the style and loved the sound.
Way to be willing to put up something different! Good work.
THAT's the way to drive an oltimer! B-)
Great edit and perfect sound design. A lot of work went into this early morning shot of caffeinated goodness.
great caracter, great filming
another editing masterpiece, beautiful!
It's nice to see a short film instead of a documentary once in a awhile :)
both Austin Healey 100/4 and triumph tr3 had big four cylinders with 100hp..
The Healey's unitized construction and superior looks, make the tr3 look like a bottom fish ,in the styling department. And the tr3 as most of the Triumph sports car range had very old school ,separate chassis and body. But both had very torquey Big Fours.
TR3 - 2 litres of growly low-slung ultra coolness.
Awesome video! Ditto on the car, driver, creativity and editing! Added to my favorites.
This is how a sidescreen TR should be driven. Currently restoring two of them, hope they will drive as good as this one.
Another beautiful film! I guess I'll have to stick to my own style :P
Variety is the spice of life.
I love Petrolicious but this edit gave me a headache. Too much jerkiness.
Almost half a million subscribers ! Congrats, you surely deserve this and even more ! Cheers Petrolicious
BAM BAM BAM! NON STOP! keep it going man. It is the urge we want to see!
Great video
Why so much hate? What i see is a man, getting in his car, and having a good time. Whats so wrong with that?
The sound is extraordinary, love it.
Strangely aggressive editing though.
....I have been driving mine ('59') for 52 years....well maintained, NOT restored....Still haven't found one of those mirrors that attach to the windscreen frame...Starting to need one due to my age.. Drove through 2 winters in Northern Ontario with no sidecurtains (1970/71).....West coast, Canada (now)
Having owned a couple of TR3A's it only makes me want to have another one. Buy yeah, a story would have made it better.
Shot in France, Alsace, on the road to the Grand Ballon. Very nice.
I love a car channel that features cars instead of an overweight retired comedian.
Good video, I was surprised by the style. I love my Triumphs so this was a nice surprise. Liked the sound the most, not sure about the fast and choppy editing, maybe a little longer on each shot.
2 minute film has more jump cuts than an entire Top Gear episode.
This looks like Southern California!
I wish I could live in California! It's the BEST!
Alsace French/German border.
Makes me want to go D R I V E
You don't have to be a critic all the time.
Lol 00:32 the guy looks like some movie character who's first born just got killed and he's about to go on some murderous revenge rampage.
Ahaha I agree, it's my dad !
Quelle chance!
Filmed by the UK Top Gear team?, show a little of nothing, half a second per cut, not for me, would rather hear the drivers story, how it came into his hands ect, and detail shots.
God the editing on Top Gear drives me insane
C'est beau l'Alsace :)
I liked the intro and the close ups, but the shakey action shots make it hard to really appreciate the car.
It wasnt his car... a real TR3 owner doesnt use the external door handle. reaches in for the pull cable..
There needs to be enough time for ones eyes to move across the lines of the body.
why did my grandpa sell this thing back in 2014😭
Incredibly expressive style, I would unsubscribe if every video were like this but as a one off it was a refreshing change.
As a born again Sportscar owner with 65 turns round the sun....this how we drive...with passion, like we are 18 again and have a second shot at the girl we never got in highschool..😆
Based on the screaming tires and body lean, that was not a leisurely Sunday drive.
Can't help the feeling this film needs a bad guy chasing in tow
Le grand ballon
Built to be driven...
Awesome vid - sometimes just the car do the talking.
Sick.
01:07 Wait... Did he stop to fart? By the way, I love the fact that he's driving the wheels out of the car.. .
Le pilote a du trouver plus excitant de regarder le vidéo que la conduite même de la Triumph
Holy shit a Triumph with no rust and leaking pipes!!!! That's a miracle!!!
It's amazing what film can do for a car hitting 40 mph.
Loved some scenes, but yeah this cars deserve elegance not fast a furious scenes
Which camera's do you use to film this ?
Love your work !!!
This man drives like a loonie and I own a TR3A too.
Is this a commercial for Triumph?
Flash, Flash, Flash, Flash, Flash....arrrrrgh! Stop for a second!
BRUTAL acceleration from the MIGHTY TR-3. Truly a tower of power...hmmm
Der Anfang hat mir sehr gut gefallen, die Schnitte danach finde ich viel zu schnell, schade.
Something's are better left unsaid....
The fate of the elderly
Nice intro, where's the video?
Not a fan of this type of filming style. Its Tourette syndrome style 101
Agreed. The story of the car and the current owner aren't done justice this way. And I'd rather have some solid footage of actual driving for a couple of seconds than some engine sounds mashed together with wild cuts and shots.
Are they trying to keep up with the Fast and Furious style filming? I agree, no good.
was thinking the same thing; the editing sucked on this one. what looked like amazing footage chopped up into two second scenes with the audio all over the place never really hearing the music of the Triumph.
Nice car. If you see this kind of editing of someone "dancing" you know they can't dance at all. Chub chub Gwyneth Paltro comes to mind as a guest star on some stupid TV series, that was the last time I attempted to sit through that highly promoted piece of drek. BTW, sound, I'll turn it off next time, but there won't be a next time.
I think the quick cuts were to disguise how slow a 1959 Triumph is.
anyone know what camera this is filmed on
What's with the compass?
Someone at Petrolicious let their teenage kid make this video?
Quelle est votre matériel vidéo ??
"This would have been better with subtitles!" - People
Humph! Okay then...
well that was different..
Lovely crisp photography.. as good as it gets.
But, really.. other than getting wrapped up against the cold, it told us nothing.
Worthwhile.. hmmmm.?
WF
Not a fan of the jerky style. Feels like an early Bond movie car chase. I thought he was going to drive off the road into a tree and the car would explode.
Cool car and a nice looking place to drive though.
And don't get me wrong: I think this was definitely a worthwhile experiment. Even for the traditional non-Morning Coffee films, shorter, less talk, and more car are all definitely good.
But not no talk at all. I still want to hear a little from the owner about what they do, or did, where they are, and some of their history with owning cars and the car in the video in particular. Stadler Patrick seems to be having a pretty good time, but I need to know a little more to envy him properly.
You can leave out the stories about the first time the owner ever saw blah blah blah when they were a child/teenager/broke college student and they were impressed/in love/whatever and knew that someday they would have one. That part is the same story over and over again.
