1965 Alfa Romeo SS - Petrolicious Founder's Alfa Problem

- Опубликовано: 29 сен 2024
- This week we take a ride in Petrolicious founder and CEO Afshin Behnia’s personal Alfa Romeo Sprint Speciale through the urban grid that makes up the roadways of Los Angeles.
Mr. Drive Tastefully himself opens up to reveal what propels his passion for the marque: an almost dire desire to research, learn, seek out, collect, and-most importantly-drive vintage Alfa Romeos. But Afshin wasn’t always an Alfista, confessing his attraction toward the Italian marque wasn’t his first love.
“I was always into the more obvious cars-BMWs, Porsches, Ferraris,” admits Afshin, “I didn't really discover the marque [Alfa Romeo] in its true sense until, I think, I was twenty or so.” Shortly after acquiring his first though, an ‘86 Spider, the ownership experience piqued his curiosity for the carmaker, and sparked the beginning of a long love affair with the manufacturer’s illustrious past.
“Naturally, as with anything, if I get a new toy or if I discover a new hobby, etcetera, I kind of get obsessed and want to know as much about it as possible,” Afshin states in your typical gearhead logic. What really lured him in was the rich history and significance in motorsports, noting, “The lineage that it has, the models, and the people who raced for it and things like that, it just blew my mind. I said, ‘How the hell did I not know about Alfa Romeo before this?’”
Of course, it didn’t take long for him to discover the extensive and undeniably impressive catalogue of beautiful classics Alfa has archived in its portfolio. The diversity in design caught Afshin’s attention on top of the racing endeavors: “All the top design houses from Zagato, to Pininfarina, to Bertone, to Ghia-they’ve all had some very interesting Alfa Romeos that they've designed. It was like discovering this whole world that I felt silly for not having known about before.”
In the process of discovering and admiring decades’ worth of Alfa automobiles, he learned of the Giulia Sprint Speciale, and the slippery Bertone-designed body paired with the Giulia running gear remains his favorite to-date. After the better portion of a decade spent keeping tabs on the market and perusing classifieds in search of an SS to call his own, Afshin noticed a spike in value: it was the time to buy.
After finally obtaining his beloved Gardenia White Sprint Speciale, Afshin says with a knowing smile, “From there, it went downhill very fast.” With an 8C, Giulietta Spider, and the SS in the stable, Afshin optimistically believed he’d be content with his treasured trio-that was, until he met a man who believed there was never enough Alfa.
Befriending fellow Alfaholic Manuel Leon Minassian saw Afshin’s collection grow considerably over the years. Laughing, Afshin blames Manuel for the similar but unique Milano machines parked in the Petrolicious headquarters-all twelve of them.

Man, Petrolicious deserves an Oscar.
Totally. This is probably their best one to date.
aumkar chandan. Agreed. I was thinking the same thing. It reminded me of the old school noir movies.
Wanna see him back on Leno's Garage-dug that ep
too right
aumkar chandan That shot of the car driving through the tunnel with the headlights reflecting on all the little tiles ...amazing.
Not very often I got so impressed with a video. Classy, pure class...
Thank you!
David Zu Elfe every time I see one of Petrolicious videos I tip my hat:) no really these videos are just magnificent! Would love to see more of his Alfas!
This video is once again just great! as always with petrolicious :) I was feeling like I was sitting right there, listening to mr. Behnia :))) but videos like this one need more footage! :))
I wouldn't mind to have this Problem... Congratulations for the very well done show!
I'm glad that he did a piece on his Alfa finally. I also bought an 86 Veloce just to tide me over until I could afford a TR6. The Alfa has totally sucked me in, and I took the car way further than I had originally intended. Now that I have a TR6, I can't get rid of the Alfa. It sounds and drives way too nice. Older Alfas like Afshin's will always be out of my reach, but there's a few made later on that are withing my grasp, and at some point I'll find an early GTV.......
Fantastic video for a wonderful car...Bravo!
why so much dislikes ?
Hey! Fiatas love Alfas. Try Volkswagen crowd....
limul97 too dark
Amazing video. What cameras was this shot on? I'd highly appreciate the answer. And who was the cinematographer.
That would be me, and I used a Sony A7S2 and R2.
David, love it, the grading, the compositions. I was sold right away. Not sure again what this video was about since I watched it to the end just for the cinematography :D Glad to hear it, I have same bodies. Did you grade it yourself?
Yup, all done by me.
Did you SLog 2 or 3 it? Cheers
Neither one. Always Cine-4, can't stand the SLOG banding with my kind of grading. That one stop of DR is not worth any of the hassle.
Someone know the name of the song with the saxofone?
I think we should see a doctor...I have one too!
Ted Gushue's Porsche next?
One of the best kind of problems.
For those of you commenting, "Too much talking, not enough car," you are missing the point. Yes the cinematography is top notch (as it always is), but what makes Petrolicious special are the people in the films, not just the cars. It's the stories of the people the complete the cinematic experience with a story. People are what make the automotive community unlike any other, and for Petrolicious to make these videos every week without charging you truly shows that these people true automotive enthusiasts and genuinely good people. If you can't appreciate the founder's story as much as the car, I'm sorry that you can't relate to true, automotive passion.

Completely agree, I love hearing the stories about each owner, how they developed their interest, their relationships with parents who sparked their initial interest etc etc

***** Awesome Sauce! 👌👍😆
Any Jazzy compilation to suggest?
A dozen Alfa's? I don't think I'd ever leave my garage. once again petrolicious-a bang up job. and that fact that the founder is a real car guy surfaces in each and every video.
The dislikes were from people who tried to watch it when it was first posted. It had comments disabled and was not available on mobile.
I couldn't watch it on my computer
no, Fiat people love Alfa Romeo. Dislike is from german wanabee
No way ! I'm german and I love Alfa ! In fact man german ppl I know do so, too !
I think he meant German-car guy istead of German car-guy.
Yes, probably !
i want money
nam get a job or be smart about things if you want it figure out a way and make a plan to get it
You don't need to be a billionaire, but I think "easily" stretches it a bit given it's supposed to be a *nice* car collection and not just a bunch of broken 80s Mercedes... :P
2manysecrets what tips would you off a 1st time car collector? I am primarily interested in restoring a car to drive everyday or every other day?
Just casually has a 8C sitting outside
It's not a car, it's an Alfa Romeo!
Wtf is with the dislikes? superb material one of the best youtube channels! keep up the good work and fuck the haters
The dislikes were from 7:00am when the video was posted but the comments were disabled and it wasn't available on mobile...
I couldn"t even watch it on my computer...
All the red head step children
One of, if not, the best Petrolicious episode ever. Superb shots, choice in music, and car. Everything blended nicely like being at a cafe on a rainy night. This channel rarely disappoints. Oh, and I loved how the owner drove the car with a sense of urgency.
It's been exactly 1 week since I fulfilled my dreams and placed my order for a new 4C :)
Sublime! Thank you Mr Behnia for conceiving Petrolicious. May you have many more Alfas to come!
To be a true petrol head.....
You need to own an Alfa
.
out
@@gamenuts6296 No.....you need to STAY TF AWAY FROM PETROLICIOUS AND ITS HORRID CONTENT!!
@@soldatinconnu1804 Took you long enough to figure it out, dumba**.
I have your same problem! My father started years ago with a 1968 Spider Veloce. He always told me about how perfect Alfas were in the past and about how they were just better than anything else. So I started to search for a Spider which was his dream car. We found one and the prices were already starting to raise. We went to see it and we just bought it. We passed a lot of weeks together fixing the car since it stood for many years in a garage. But after we got everything fixed and I had my first short trip in the car I just fell in love! I started to read some books and watch videos about Alfas and that's when I got infected with this beatiful Alfa disease! After about 5 years of searching I bought my dream car in January of this year:) a silver 1970 GT 1300 Scalino. I'm totally restoring it and it will take a few more months probably but I just feel so good everytime I look at this stunning car. Thanks for this beatiful video! Keep up posting Alfas, I really love it! Best channel on youtube!
Great for you & your dad. I'm a dyed in the wool Alfa guy. My son and i just finished a Cafe Racer together, time well spent. You will both remember those times fondly...
devon 7 thank you! We are really enjoying it! I bought the car in january and we are working almost all togheter on it. My brother is now also infected. I hope he will also buy an Alfa for himself soon. What cafe racer did you prepared?
We just finished a 78 CB750 which i had laying around for 30+ years. i have a Ducati,GSXR 2 dirt bikes and i just bought a 76 CB750 Super Sport for myself to start a cafe racer ! Currently i have a 81 GTV6 and a 88 Milano Verde. I also strayed and own a 87 Lotus turbo Esprit and a 70' TVR Vixen. I am an Alfaholic for the transaxel Alfas. Probably had about 20 Alfas up till now . ( nobody ever has just 1 Alfa at any given time). What state are you located?
devon 7 wow!! Your collection is really impressive!!! Bothe the bikes and the cars. You know what Alfas and Lotus share? They are both cars with a lot of character! Last week I picked up the treated and freshly painted GT chassi from the workshop where it has been for the last few months. As soon as we find some time we will start with the reasembling. Since we are not mechanics it will probably take until the end of this year to complete the car. I would really like to have it perfect! Nevertheless I prefer to take some more time and do it well rather than just fixing it. I will never sell the car so I don't need to keep a timeschedule.
You dad is a wise man!!
lol, check out the subtitles - alfa romeo == alpha male! :-)
3 years late but, you still have it?
So much passion, I would love to work for Petrolicious, it is everything i've always wanted as a job.
Doublesided tape Where do I apply
I remember a white SS here in New Zealand back in the 1980s. Not sure if it is still here, but they are a very beautiful car. 🍀❤️ I've owned 4 Alfas over the years, two Alfasud ti, a 1750 GTV and a 1600 GT Junior. Wish I had the money to have the same 'problem' as you.😎
I wouldn't say Alfa Romeo is a red step child. There are lots of other classic car manufacturers that get looked down on way more.
mrmikal11 Volvo
Как же красиво, твою мать!
la moglie italiana ha aiutato molto nella tua scelta di automobili! I would love to have my Gtv featured on the channel!
If the wife is partly responsible for Afshin's choice of Alfas then could his collection be considered his harem?
Firefly non esageriamo 😂
;-)
I hope there is a part 2, 3, etc. coming
This is what I was thinking. There needs to be a video on all of the Giulia's!
Correction, make that video's on each and every alfa!
How can an Alfa be a problem?
-Its part of the solution...
About ten years ago while riding my 1966 Vespa SS180, I spotted an Alfa gassing up in a Los Angeles service station. I approached the driver about buying the car. He declined, but handed his business card which read Afshin Behina, Petropolis...
haha awesome.
Just found this channel after jay leno. Pretty awesome
you sir have a wonderful problem.....
Now the boss tell the story....great video!!
Have to disagree with the name of this film... If one can afford to have a classic car and classic Alfas, then there's no problem in my opinion, here in Finland cars are so expensive and our climate is so crappy that a normal guy like me can only watch these videos and keep on dreaming... Maybe to win in a lottery or something
MUSIC // 1 - Time to Close by Johnny Hawksworth & 2 - Bottle of Blues by Andy Quin
Afshin, thank you for sharing just a little of your story with us. You run one of my favorite web channels and produce fantastic videos.
I used to enjoy the Petrolicious channel, when it had the truth-speaking founder, who dared make the Orwellian mistake of calling a spade a spade.
Even as a enormous fan and defender of Japanese cars I have to say : Alfa Romeos have so much personality, there are only few cars that can compare
Not sure about the "perfection" of this video. All filmed in the dark kind of made it hard to actually see the car well. The interior, the exterior lines. ...still, far up there in this kind of automotive videos!
Superb . When those who deserve the best are aligned the world turns in harmony ! Alfa-Holics Anon .
He said. You don't choose the alfa, the alfa chooses you. This is totaly true, my alfa 916 spider chose me
Alfa Romeo is not a problem, it’s an adiction that makes you smile everyday you drive! Alfa Romeo, cuore sportivo 🍀
I love my Alfa, might only be a 147 but damn is it sexy, I find myself browsing the local classifieds looking for another Alfa, I wish I didn't have to let my near perfect 147 sit almost neglected due to tough times, hope she passes her next MOT, I couldn't bare to see my first Alfa get parted out
Beautiful car. Hopefully one day i will own one but for now i am happy with my gtv6s and 105 models :) ! Keep up the awsome videos more people need to know the greatness of alfa and ownership.
Its a shame that they have demolished tha alfa factory in milano i was there while demolition was starting
Those early Alfa twin cams with Weber carbs are among the very few motors where you can safely bury the tach. In fact the real power begins when you hit the redline.
As usual, great cinematography and music background. But the most important point in this clip is that, fortunately, there are people who understand the true Alfa essence. Everyone who has at some point owned an Alfa is most certainly infected from the Alfa virus. And this is stated from a guy who has a family history with Alfas streching from the old Giulia Super to the latest European Giulietta. Keep the fantastic job you deliver and don't forget: A.L.F.A. = Always Looking For Another. Warm greetings from an Alfista in Greece. Oo=v=oO
Why, oh why, do I feel so blue, I miss my Alfa's more than any woman I ever knew?
Alfa Romeo is not a problem, Alfa Romeo is THE solution
Petrolicious, thanks once again for succeeding so well at putting across what the passion for cars really envolves as a whole: the colours, the specific models, sounds, design and the general passion for the automotive world and community. Please never stop doing such a great job at illustrating this and keep the videos coming, I'm sure I am not alone when I say we will pleasurably be here to watch.
If someone tells me cars are just machines, I will definitely look back to your videos so as to prove them that these machines are much more than about going from one place to another.
Nice video as every last one..That Alfa Romeo 1600 GTA Corsa at the backround is magnificent...This should be the star of a future video..I love this car...Please consider it... :D
I love this channel so much. Absolute best way to wake up
same I have an alfa 156 v6 and an old boxer
best cars ever!
keep up the good work guys!
Amazing video as always... Maybe Mr Behnia can show off the rest of he's Alfa Romeo collection sometime!!
He must be in Alphaholics Anonymous.
"You don't pick an Alfa, the Alfa picks you." Oh hell it did. I starved for the thing but I cannot leave it. You do not have ownership of an Alfa, you have a relationship with it.
That's right, lady.
He used to drive obvious cars like BMWs and Porsches until the age of 20 when he got an Alfa.
Says a dude sitting in an american four position while giving an interview.
I’m surprised at my self for never ever hearing of the Alfa Romeo SS. This is my first time to see and hear one in this video. What a seductive design, the curves in the body just want to pull you in. But then again Alfa never ceases to surprise me. Just imagine driving this beauty in its heyday when it rolled out of the factory in the early ‘60s. What a sophisticated car for its time that still looks relevant on the road today.
It's not a problem. It's a blessing.
There is no such thing as an Alfa Romeo problem.
Too much talking, not enough car.
Alfa Romeu=LEGEND!
You always post great videos on your channel, but this episode is really special. As one who was born and raised in Milano, the city of Alfa Romeo, I can only appreciate a true Alfista! My first Alfa was a Sprint Veloce from the '70's and I had a few other Alfa's in my life. I miss them all, no modern car lives in you with the same passion! My regards to the "Milanese" in your family... I know she loves Alfas, too! Cheers, Corrado.
still my dream alfa
I miss Petrolicious
Love the sliding door garage so you can display what's inside.
I would imagine that some of the dislikes were from people having a hard time finding an Alfa to buy because it seems like people who love Alfa buy anywhere from 12 to 100+ of them leaving none for the rest of us...
Obsession... maybe. Problem? Well... maybe getting parts. Wonderful production, all of your videos are just, well; beautiful. Just like a vintage Alfa...
Great problem, indeed! As always, a great visual and audible delight ... especially enjoyed 4:30-4:43 light reflections!
Thank you - it was my favorite shot to put in.
Small european car love, can hook you like a disease. I used to have it bad. I owned a MGB, triumph spitfire, and my favorite triumph GT6.
I love this guy. No Afshin no petrolious :-)
I've had two alfas, a 1969 Berlina and a 1987 Milano. Two different cars, two great cars that I miss...
Music/Songs are: 1. Time to Close - Johnny Hawksworth 2. Bottle of Blues - Andy Quin.

Love it! Thanks for sharing your Alfa's and love with us!
painstakingly beautiful videos and brilliant choice of music I think u guys shud start making car movies now.
I´ve seen this episode more than a dozen times over the past few years - it´s just so easthetic and moody... but my favourite part is the ending... "I´m Afshin Behnia - and I have an Alfa Romeo problem".... Hahahaha... that just gets me every time!
My Sprint Speciale ownership amazingly parallels Afsin`s, when I bought my first Alfa years ago (`74 GTV) I was curious about the marque`s history and bought several books and discovered the SS in a little b&w photo. It took awhile to realize the SS wasn`t a show car but an actual production model. The hunt was on ! and it also took quite some time to find an actual car as there were only a handful ever imported ,several years passed and I finally found a good one that was looking for a loving home so I bought mine sight unseen as well. He`s also right that they become an addiction, ALFA , Always Looking For Another !
Sometime we wonder if we actually use our senses properly, or if we are being use by them. Is it a matter of true appreciation for art, design, knowledge, functionality, beauty and finesse, or a simple addiction? Probably all of the above. I can relate to this story as I have a 147 TS selespeed, a Spider TS 16 Valves, a 156 Sportwagon, a 156 6 speed, a 156 Q, a 916 2.0 TB, 2 GTV's 3.0 RHD, another one LHD and I am still looking for more...Let me know if you want to share that passion and addiction with me as I am looking for an exchange and more fun!!!
Afshin Behnia. You are the epitony of Petrolicious. I want to thank you, please share much more of yourself, your passion and your thoughts around cars.
I have a REALLY Straight 1985 Alfa Spider that started life as a new car in Japan. It came from the factory with Twin Solex Carbs. It has 20 more HP and gets better MPG's than the Spiders that were imported into North America as new cars. I got 42MPG, from Jasper Park to Kamloops !
Ah my journey has only just begun. I have two. I briefly had three. And only this week I was day-dreaming about building another garage on my block. A four or five car stable JUST for GTV's / GT's.
LA Alpha Confidential . . . Cool . Beautiful, yes - it left me wanting (more car) . . . As per design - I suspect .
I want an Alfa Romeo so bad. Owning a 2000 GTV is currently a goal of mine. Too bad the 156 and 147 weren't available in the US. I would love to drive a Busso V6 everyday.
My first own car was Alfa Romeo. And it was my choice, not coincidence...
We all should have his problem.
I think that if Alfa Romeo is really seen as "the red-headed stepchild" then it's probably because just after their heyday they spent about 30 years building bad cars...
Still, it's fun to know the founder of Petrolicious is just as much a hopeless petrolhead as any of the people he's featured in his videos!
The design borrows some Mercedes SL lines, but at a discount.
The Italians don't need to copy anyone.
These videos are consistently amazing
One of the best videos! LOVE IT!
this is the petrolicious video i hate most and i cant believe its from the founder.....why too many dark lighting....why not show the car clearly...hiding something? and what is the point in showing the bird, the mountain :D
I to suffer the same affliction ?...My name is Farinared and I'm an Alfaholic...unrepentant
Alfa-holism is a real disease.
I'm still looking for a Junior Z 1600.
Dislikes from Alfa engineers interpreting the word 'problem' in the wrong light. Magnifico!
What a pleasure to watch the founder of Petrolicious, a real passionate !
Every tuesday, we are never disappointed.
Love the channel...I think the dislikes come from the fact that this video kinda comes off as an 8min humble brag. Video was less about the car or Alfas and more about multiple acquisitions but we would all likely do the same with the cash.
I have an addiction to classic Fiat 124 Spiders... I get it man. So many Alfa's to choose from from!
