So true. I bought the 22mm, the 18-150 mm and the one I use 90% of the time is the 15-45 kit. You nailed it.
It's too bad we had to figure this out after we bought the other lenses!
Hi, so you think i should get the camera with the kit lens? From what i can see it seems to be pretty darn good. But i'm wondering if i'm better off buying some cheap lens like the 7artisan 35mm f1.2 cuz i already have tamron 17-55mm f2.8 (which, doesn't have image stabilization hence my dilemma). So i'm wondering whether that image stabilization is worth sacrificing. the low light capabilities of an f1.2 lens. Or i'm even wondering if i should sell my tamron and get both the kit and the 7artisan. In which, i would be sacrificing that constant f2.8 of the tamron for the image stabilization in the kit lens and the low light capabilities of the 7artisan. Also, i already have a 50mm f1.8 which is great in lowlight, but on an apsc camera it's just too zoomed in for most situations (it's great for portraits tho so i'm not selling it). So what do you think? Is the kit lens that comes with the m50 worth considering?
It's worth considering because of its size. It's also a native Mount so you don't have to worry about adapting it to the M50 like you do with the tamron. I have the time run also and even though it's 2.8 I never use it. The focus motor on it is loud and it's actually slow to focus where the kit lens is fast focusing and silent. I'm not sure about the 7artisans lens I don't know that lens. but it's always good to have a wide aperture lens in your bag. For me that lens has been the 22 mmf2. so to answer your question I think the kid lens is a good lens to own with an M50 because it keeps everything small and very useful. If you ever want to do any video with the M50 it's a good lens to have also.
@@BillEricPhotography hmm i guess i'll buy the kit and keep my tamron for awhile to see which one i need more. The 7artisan is a $100 manual lens with a very unique character to it. It doesn't have AF nor IS so if i buy it it'd strictly be for those "ohh i wanna take a picture of this" moment when hanging out at night. Anyway thanks for the quick reply! Really appreciate it!
Isn't the 18-150 lens better than tge kit lens? I mean you have good zoom in this one.

Great point. The smaller the lens, the more likely you'll take it with you. I have the 15-45mm kit lens, 22mm lens, and a 55-250mm stm with adapter. For travel, I just pack the pancake and kit lens and I'm pretty much covered.

Happy to help, at some point you may want to add some different lenses but if you use this one for a while you will start to see what it lacks and that will help you decide what you need.

hey guys, if the only lens i have for my canon m6 mkii is the sigma 30mm, should i buy this Canon EF-M 15-45mm f/3.5-6.3 mentioned in the video or maybe the Canon EF-M 11-22mm f/4-5.6 STM? i was thinking i need at least one lens with image stabilization for when taking video. the pancake does not have IS and neither do any of the sigmas. the 30 is great for photos but not if i wanna do any video (without a tripod) at all

I wish I had of listened to you. I went crazy. Bought the ef-m 22mm f2. EF 50mm 1.8. EF 40mm 2.8. EFS 25mm 2.8. I left the kit lens in the box. Only lens I use daily is the 40mm. Love it. Took out the kit lens today and it is surprising good!
I did the same thing I went out and bought everything I thought I would need. I guess it's just a lesson learned.
Love the lens. I have an EF 50mm f/1.8 lens and an Efm 11-22mm lens but I use the kit lens 90% of the time. Works really well. Has image stabilisation. Auto focus is really fast. Focal range is really versatile. Weighs almost nothing. It seems like its one of the better modern day kit lenses. Canon did a good job with it.

I am still trying to figure out why people hate it.
It's a fairly basic and expensive zoom lens. But it can do a lot of things pretty well.
I just rediscovered the joy of this lens on a long, steep hike with friends last weekend. I think they were all glad it was so light to hand off when I was scrambling over the rocks!
Others have mentioned it already but don't sleep on that 18-150 as the ultimate travel lens. It's not as pocketable as our little friend, but still very small for a HUGE range.
I think it's the kit lens in some countries for like the m5 or m6? I picked it up used at the same time I bought my m50 (kit included the 15-45 & EF adapter). I love being able to get landscapes, action shots, and tight details with just a quick twist, and it's still very easy to pack when you're Just On Vacation.
I've also had a lot of fun adapting the Tamron 70-300 for super-deep telephoto (living that 1.6x crop life) and my gf's 40mm pancake (not so pancake on the adapter but oh well) for street photos.
Anyway, really appreciate all the m50 love on this channel!

I bought the EOS-M3 as a kit witch shipped with their 18-55 lens. At the same time, I ordered the 22 mm F2; It was on sale for $149.00 and I knew I would want a fast lens after getting bored with the kit. The 18-55 was rather large so my M3 pretty much lived with the sweet little pancake 22 mm on it and I gave up the versatility of having a zoom lens with me at all times. Then I found the 15-45 Kit lens on sale for $99.00 and I couldn't resist it's compact size. It makes a sweet little package and it's the lens that lives on my M3 now. Great job on the video and that picture of the USS Cassin was amazing.

Thank you. I'm a beginner and I was about to go and buy a Sigma 16mm, 1.4. You just convinced me to practice more with the kit my M50 came with before taking the next step.
That's a good move, this way you can learn photography a little bit and then see if you actually need a different lens. You may find out you want something completely different.
I bought the Canon M100 in back in 2019.....used the 15-45mm lens for about 3 years, then i bought the 55-200mm ef-m lens two months ago. so far, so good....i mainly just use the camera for photos such as street photography, landscapes and cityscapes. i rarely take video with this camera.
It's a perfect camera for that. You don't need to use it for video. We find it very convenient and easy to use for both.
I'm another guy that used L glass on my M5 with the adapter. Never used the kit 15-45 - till this year. It's so small and light and fits right in my jacket pocket. I used to use my 70-200 f4 L IS on the M5 but decided to pick up the EF-M 55-200, I'm losing 1.5 stops but the size difference is unreal. I've also since added the 22 and 32.
I have a feeling I will be adding those lenses as well. I imagine you lose some depth of field but in a situation where you don't want to carry around a big heavy camera bag it might be worth it!
I posted a comment recently Ref purchasing a M-50 camera and not being able to use lens that I already owned. You said I needed an adapter to be able to use the lens. I purchased an adapter and it works great. Thanks for the information! I'm happy and my camera is happy.

Started off with the 15-45 but have upgraded to the 18-150 which stays on the camera most of the time. Also have the 22, not used it much but a cracking little lens. Only non efm lens I have now is a Canon 70-300 as you can never have too much reach in some situations
I agree it's great to have a telephoto lens. That is the one thing that I don't have for this camera and I'm seriously considering the 55 to 200 for it.

I started with the M line getting the original w/ 18-55, ef adapter, and flash for $218 on ebay fall 2016, got the M2 w/ 22mm around Christmas 2016 for ~$400. Then upgraded to the M5 the first spring after it came out. I have the whole M lens lineup with the exception of the 55-200. I have since sold the original M and 18-55 for the same price I bough it and kept the adapter and flash :) I just love the M line, so fun, so easy to use and I haven't ever been disappointed! When I want to go out with a "pocket camera" I take the M2and 22mm otherwise I usually have the M5 32mm attached and 18-150 in my bag for reach. Since getting the 32 it pretty much lives on my M5, such a great lens! I really appreciate your photography based reviews on the M line, so many only focus on the video!
I'm glad you like the video, the M line is definitely underrated for photography. We are photographers and only do video to make these tutorials so we bought the m50 for video. It has definitely turned out to be a very capable camera for photography and I wish I would have invested in more of the native lenses to start with. I think the 32 mm 1.4 is the one I'm going to go for next. Everyone seems to love it!
I’ve had my canon m50 for a couple years now. At the time there was a deal where I could add on the 55-200 for a ridiculous low price so it was a no brainer to tack that on with the camera kit. Somewhere shortly after that I did add on the 22mm f2 lens mainly for the greater f stop range. Since most of my photography is landscape this my go to lens. Further down the road I did buy the 50mm with the adapter but it’s probably the one I could have left on the shelf in the store. I have thoroughly loved this camera and have had a ton of fun with it.

sound advice. i was expecting bad results from the 15-45 after reading all the review. But in reality its very good, both for photos and video. Love the compact size and having the m6ii to the uncropped 4k is also very good. 22mm is probably on my list, the 11-22 ?? maybe for vlogging but its very fast. And maybe the 18-150 or 55-200 to cover myself for travel when i dont want my full frame to come along. But as you said , the 15-45 is a lens that will do it all to to great standard.

Just wanted to say that I just discovered your channel a few days ago, and I´ve already watched a ton of your videos. Mainly on the M50, which I just got a few weeks ago together
with the 15-45mm lens for the price of what the camera itself would cost. And it was Brand new. I got a super deal. i mainly bought it, because I want to build up my RUclips channel with personal tutorial videos, and not just videos of my live concerts with my bands that I´ve posted up until now. I spent at least 2 x months researching what camera to get, and 90% of the top RUclips tech people recommended the M50. i´m a beginner as far as cameras, and lenses go, so I think I will work with the 15-45 mm kit lens for a while, and eventually buy the 22mm. Thanks for your very understandable videos. I´ve learned quite a bit in a very short time.

I bought my m50 with the 15-45mm kit lens and used it on my vacation in Perth, Australia. I got great sharp images with the kit lens in good daylight conditions. Even in low light it can still get good images. Just don't use the kit-lens during nighttime.
This is just my opinion on the lens when traveling. I don't really need high aperture lenses when shooting group photos or landscape since I don't really need the bokeh on this kind of shots. Most of the time, I'll be shooting during daytime.That's why the Kit lens with its f3.5-5.6 works. But if you need more light on low light conditions, the 22mm will do the job.
I agree, the 22 is the perfect compliment to the kit lens.
Thanks for this review. It saves me a lot for buying adaptors and EF lens. I just bought EF-M Sigma 30m 1.4 perfect not too tight and it can give me good aperture most especially it still light and compact by not adding adaptor.

Agree 100%....Great little camera in my opinion. For plane travel I can get the body, 3 lenses and a bunch of batteries in the bottom of my backpack without hardly knowing they’re in there. After the 15-45 I bought the 11-22 and the 18-150 lenses, I’ve got a couple more now too, several more in fact. I also bought the adaptor, but I’ve not used it yet as from an aesthetic point of view I love the look of the native lenses on the m50. Very happy with my camera 👍🏻
I am definitely considering getting rid of the lenses I have and buy all m Mount lenses for the camera.
When I was in Italy a couple of weeks ago I had one day with the 15-45, then a day with the 22mm etc etc. Really light and portable and I’m very happy with the results I get. Excellent for travel in my opinion.

The deal I got for my m50 was you could add the canon adapter for like 15 bucks more (it usually is like $180 I think) so since I was already getting the adapter I added a canon EF-S 24mm 2.4 pancake for another 100 bucks. I am totally a noob but I was blown away at the quality of pictures I got with the ef-s 24mm, the bokeh with Christmas lights was so beautiful. I later ordered the canon ef-m 55-200mm for taking pictures of the moon and it was quite a treat being able to take a picture of the moon with no tripod and be able to count all of the little craters, totally blew my mind. The next lens I want to get is a 300mm or 400mm prime lens so I can really get in close on the moon and maybe even take pictures of stars.
I admit I haven't really used the kit lens but I also haven't used the camera much in general just because I am working a lot right now and it's dark when I go to work and dark when I get home. I think when I finally go on vacation again I will probably just pack the 15-45 kit lens and the ef-m 55-200mm and call it good. I do want to have a few nice prime lenses at home for portraits and whatnot so I am probably going to get a few fancy lenses that I don't care about size and weight since they will be home lenses.
Anyways apologies for rambling, I really enjoyed all of your canon m50 videos and found it interesting how in the earlier videos you kept mentioning how great it was with more expensive glass and now you've shifted to the practicality and convenience of the native mount lenses. If you do sell all that other glass, maybe consider giving the ef-m 55-200 a chance, I'd love to see what you could do with it.

Thank you for this video. What you are saying is so true. I get great shots with the kit lens. I just traveled to Italy and everyone loved the photos I captured. The 22mm is a great lens for portraits and I have gotten fanatic moon shots with the 55-200mm. Plus like you said awesome as a travel set up. Throw it in your pocket and go!!
Exactly oh, I do miss the depth of field I get with some of my better Nikon lenses but you can't beat the portability of this camera system!

@@BlueLion364 I think with most lenses it's more about low ISO and keeping the camera stable.
I did the same with my M50, in all honesty 15-45 is great, yeah, sometimes the sharpness can be a bit hit or miss but i'd rather take 3 shots and have 1 come out great than carry a 500g lens. I also have the 32mm that I got a great deal for and for the size it's punches way out of it's league with that f1.4 and really good optics
I agree, all of the prime lenses that are made for this camera are fantastic for their price and size.

I fully agree with you. I have the 15-45mm and bought the 22mm pancake which lives on my travel setup. I did also buy the 18-150mm which goes along on longer travels. My adapted Ef 1.8 I used once 😂
I find I am adapting lenses less and less to this camera and wanting to use the m Mount lenses more and more!
Thank you for this! I have to agree. I had the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 and a Tamron 18-270 that I sometimes use on the M50, but I was had those from my Rebel t6i. The M50 definitely works better with the native lenses and the 15-45 is a little powerhouse lens that is on my camera almost all the time now. I love that I don't have to lug my huge backpack into the parks all the time anymore, I can just grab the M50 with both my lenses (the 15-45 and the 11-22), fit them in my mini-backpack and go.
The M50 is certainly a capable little camera with its native lenses. the nice thing is if you ever did want to adopt more expensive bigger lenses for something in particular you can!
This lens is very under rated. I am only using it recently on a photoshoot. I have both the Canon M100 and M6 Mk2. The other M lenses I have are the EF-M11-22mm, 22mm, 32mm, the Sigma 56mm f/1.4, the TtArtisan 17mm, 23mm, 35mm and the 50mm (all f/1.4 manual lenses). I like manual lenses due to its old school ease of use especially in low light.
Overall, my Canon M system works perfectly and I don't understand why some people are complaining about it as inadequate.
By the way, I also use Micro4/3 and also a Canon Full Frame DSLR. The Canon M is an excellent travel and street photography camera.
Totally agree. It's a nice little compact system with some good lenses available for it. The only negative I would say is it's not the best in low light. Hi ISO images can get a little noisy.
I have used it to shoot many night photos up to ISO6400 and its OK.
One of the best m50 footage I've seen , very inspired now as I'm waiting on mine! Cheers.

Kit lens is a good one to start with. I would then recommend getting the 22 mm f2. That's a great lens to have with this camera.
This is my experience. The M50 Is now my "in pocket" camera for street and documenting my trips. Like you said the 22mm is perfect fpr video and low light and the 15-45mm is a brilliant lens to. I have the 200mm and the 18-55 plus the Sigma 30mm 1.4 but am finding the 22mm and 15-45 are my goto for the M50.
I leave the EF and EF-S lenses for my 800D DSLR for planned landscapes/ wildlife work where a solid tripod and the added weight fills me with confidence, justified or not.

I'm buying my wife for her birthday the M50 with the kit 15-45mm lens and the 22mm and that's it, she won't need more.
Also will give her my Voightlander 50mm f3.5 full manual lens so she'll learn photography.
Bought the viltrox speed booster for the possibility to use all my L glass if needed.
Sounds like a perfect plan. The Viltrox adapter is nice to have for those times when you are going for something a little bit better or a little bit more creative. Or maybe you even want to rent a lens for a specific shoot.
I find myself using the kit lens the most too. Sell all the other lenses and buy the Ef-m 32mm f1.4 it transforms any m series camera. (Side note, I have owned all but one of the native Ef-m lenses).
I am seriously considering doing that. I think the 32 1.4 is going to be my next purchase.

I bought the Canon M50 with the 18-150mm lens, which works great for travel. Then I got the 32mm 1.4 lens that is great for night photography. Just ordered a refurbished 22mm lens from Canon. So my lens selection for the M50 is complete.

I purchased two M50's about a year ago and used the kit lenses exclusively for several months. I eventually added the 22mm and then the 32mm into the mix. These are the main two lenses that stay on my cameras now. I notice a significant lack of sharpness in the kit lens compared to both of these lenses. So much so, that I rarely ever use the kit lenses anymore unless I'm doing a dolly zoom shot. I almost bought the 11-22mm but whenever I see videos where this lens is being used it appears to have the same lack of sharpness (in video) that I notice in the 15 -45 kit. I recently picked up the sigma 16mm 1.4 efm for wide stuff and it is nice. Fast and sharp (and hasn't come off the camera yet) but it is a bit heavy (14.5 oz) when compared to the native lenses. I guess I've been spoiled by the primes :)
Prime lenses will always give you a little bit of a sharper image. But I have shot some New York City skyline images with this lens it really did well as far as sharpness. But I agree once you get used to the sharpness of a prime it's tough to go back to a kit lens.

I bought the F1.4 32mm as my second lens. Got it pre-owned on eBay for about $120 off the normal price. Love both lenses so far
That's a very nice second lense. You can definitely save a few bucks going used. I do that often as well.
I’ve just received one of these today (pre-owned) and am really pleased with its AF speed (silent) and sharpness.
If you can live without the shallow depth of field this is a really great lens. it's very nice as just a pocketable walk around camera and lens combination.
Disney Image Makers I do have an EF 18-55 with a converter but will probably not keep that now. Sadly the native 55-250 is too much for me, even used, otherwise I’d have all I need in those two lenses :)
I too find the 15-45 mm to be a great lens. I use it about 80% of the time. I also bought a 6 stop ND filter for it. The next lenses I bought was the EF-M 32 mm f/1.4 and the EF-M 55-200 mm lens. That's all I need, really.

@@BillEricPhotography I like to go on mountain hikes with my M50. I usually bring just my 15-45mm kitlens, a light tripod and the EF-M 55-200 mm. The M50 with the 55-200 mm (incl. lenshood) still fits in a small camera bag. That's just amazing.
I got an M50. It didn't cone with a lens but, I got the body for a really good price brand new. I ordered the Sigma 16mm f1.4 DC DN and the Canon 22mm 2.0. Both those lenses are absolutely fantastic for the kind of shooting that I'm doing. The Sigma is an amazing lens. The Canon 22mm is also very good. You can't go wrong with either one. I will order the 15-45mm kit lens very soon.

You are correct. Got the 22mm as my second lens. I also got the EF-M 55-200mm zoom for $199 "renewed" on Amazon when I realized I had to crop my fireworks pictures by about 50% because I was too far away. 😊 Only other lenses I'm even considering are either the EF-M 32mm or the new Sigma 30mm EF-M mount and maybe at some point the 11-22mm.

I wished that I seen this video a while ago, I think you are making a valid point in this video. I have 3 non-native lenses + kit and the EFM 11-22mm. Lately I have really started to enjoy using the 11-22. It takes really nice and sharp nature/landscape photos and it is so light to carry. I enjoy the non-native lenses as well but they do get clunky and does not really feel good on the M50´s small body. Alltough I think that the EF-M 55-250mm is not telephoto enough for many things, I like a bit more reach to be honest, and the macro lens is not really great when it comes to photograph moving insects. But for landscape, portraits, street and general photography - the native lenses are good enough for the M50.

I've tried alot of non-native lenses, they are cheap and even dirt-cheap second-hand, /2.8 non-native would be cheaper then /4 original, but... after all I came to native 50mm+24-105 for an FF canon.

Yeah it’s tough hauling the big gear around. If the smaller and lighter system works for your photo needs, that’s the way to go.
I purchased the M50 with the 15-45 kit lens and the Canon 50 mm 1.8 with EF adapter. I agree with you that I find myself shooting on the kit lens. However, I have the 22mm lens and also use it for low light situations.
They go perfectly together. I love my 22mm!
Great advice for anyone using m series Canon cameras. The kit lens is perfect for travel. Don't get anything else except maybe the 22mm prime.

Great video and I agree. I bought the telephoto lens M 55-200 mm before leaving for my cruise Baltic Sea and Norway. I only used it once in 3 weeks. I love this little camera because of the weight and it is perfect when I travel. Thank you for sharing your opinion.

No, I love it and I am glad I decided to buy M series. It is small and light. It was just the question of changing the lense while I was visiting. I just used the kit lense. Much better than a phone like my friends. They want my pictures now!

I'm getting the 22mm next for the low light performance. Also taking your advice on sticking with the kit for a while!
I think if you do that you'll be able to see where is falling short for you and that will tell you what your next line should be.
The problem with this lens is that it seems to have a big variation between the different copies. For my part I am very satisfied. I find that there is prejudice about these lenses that do the work in 90% of cases. Thanks for your time.
My copy seems to be pretty good. I really have no complaints about it other than it not having a fast aperture but that's not the lenses fault. And you are right events like this can handle about 90% of your photography needs.

I've been happy with the results with the EF-M 22mm as my 2nd Lens with m50. The one you mention that's equidistant of a 50mm probably will be my list next. I use the camera for both photography and video. Small form factor is a must for my decisions.
32 mm 1.4 is equivalent to 50 mm. From everything I'm hearing it's a very nice lens to own. I think that's going to be my next purchase for my M50 also
I ordered the M50 with 15-45 lens and Manfrotto Befree GT Xerox tripod yesterday. Was looking on RUclips for lens to get for food videos. (Gonna shoot tasty style videos). And came across your video, will definitely be giving the kit lens a try first. This is my first camera so looking forward to it.
That should be a nice combo. If you want a little more depth of field I would get the 22mm f2 next.
Thank you for the advice (and I am definitely going to follow). I am fairly new to photography and have been looking at a lot of "You need this", "You got to get this" videos. At the end of the day, I was left with a lot of eye candy and a hefty projected cost.

Superb video. Agree totally. I bought 15-45(kit) followed by 22/2 and then 55-200. Love all 3 and the 55-200 is used the most and the 22/2 the least. Also have sigma 18-50 f/2.8, Canon 85/1.8 and 70-200 f/4L IS
You have a nice setup there! I need to try the 55-200.
My kit lens was the 18-150 which I like a lot. After that I got the 11-22, 70-300 (adapted EF), 22, 32, 56 (Sigma DC DN) and 28 MACRO.
That's a pretty well rounded kit you e built!

I like the 22 mm for the shallow depth of field but 15 to 45 is a great walk around lens.

I have an R5 and after seeing my gf's m50 mark ii, and it's compact setup, I went and bought one myself. Light lens (thinking of the 15-45 lens) is good, but I wanted a lighter body to compensate for the heavier lenses I'm speed boosting onto it (I don't like giving up much light or depth of field, especially since I got an R5). Can say I get a near full frame image (87% vs 40% of APS-C) and barely losing any light (same multiplier). I'm talking L glass and some Sigma 'ART' glass. Weight a problem? Nah, it's lighter than the R5, looks inconspicuous, and I just sling the setup across my shoulder. Really wanted to contrast my R5 45mp "hyper realistic" look with a wonderous 24mp look on the cheap. (Can you believe I got the m50 mark ii setup for $325? 🤣)

I have been pleasantly surprised by this lens and I'm really rethinking the way I use the M50. I think I'm going to end up selling all of my other lenses for it keep the 22 and maybe get the 32 1.4.
Disney Image Makers Sigma has some new interesting lenses too , I was thinking also adapting the bokeh master 18-35 sigma art 1.8 but that’s something else ... thanx for all your videos about the M50 , it’s a great purchase !

I think every photographer wants to get a bunch of lenses right away. You may still want to get some new ones but shooting for a little while will let you know what you need.
Again I find myself in full agreement with you. I really like the kit lens on my M100 camera that I have. I then purchased lens in the following order: ef-50mm, ef-m 22mm, ef-m 55mm-200mm, and finally the ef-m 32mm. I am looking forward to upgrading to the M6 Mark ii camera soon.
That's a very well-rounded kit you have there! I think I'm going to start getting rid of these other lenses and maybe picking up the 55 to 200 so I have a telephoto lens in this Mount.
Ha... Probably would have been helpful a year and a half ago. I'm an engineer so naturally I researched everything to death. The common complaint about the kit lens is the softness at the edges on most copies with a few really good copies (which you may have). With that said... I barely gave it a chance before buying the 22mm, the 11-22mm, and now the 32mm. I used the 11-22 most initially and now switch out depending on the situation. Really loving the 32mm 1.4! The kit lens hasn't been on the camera in months which honestly hasn't been given a fair chance. I may just need to dust it off and give it a try.
You should but you already have some great leneses. I think this video was more for people who weren't sure if the kit lens would work for them. I want that 32mm!
I have an M50 coming in with this lens tomorrow and I am looking forward to it. I have a Fuji X-T10 that has an 18-55 f/2.8 and it's about the same size. I wish Canon made one because it is fantastic. I've seen a lot of great work coming from the 22 so that will be my next purchase. I primarily shoot with a Pentax K1 so this kit will be my travel bundle when not on photography specific trips. Thanks for your review.
I pretty much use the M50 in the same way as a moor travel friendly camera. The 22 mm is a very nice very small lens. I'm sure you will love it!

My M50 arrives Saturday and I'm even more excited now. I don't hear much good about the kit lens (equal good and bad really), but seeing your examples makes me more confident. However... The fact you have a world of shooting experience already, you likely already knew what settings were needed to get the most from the kit lens. Either way, I'm just getting started and think I will be happy with my purchase. I'm pretty sure I will still want the 22 and the macro 28 lenses but... Baby steps. :)
The kit lens is a good all-around lens. You're not going to get shallow depth of field out of it but you will get sharp images. The 22 mm is a good lens to actually learn about depth of field and aperture. That would definitely be the next lens I recommend. it's a very easy camera to use and there are so many videos and tutorials on the different functions that I think you will be fine. The most important thing is just to get out and use it!

I never appreciated how small and lightweight my camera is (with the kit lens) and always wanted to go with speedboosters and fast EF primes (even recently I was thinking of getting 40mm f/2.8) instead of considering the native lenses.
Now I’m fully certain, these small camera shines the best with their respective small lenses 👍🏻

i did the same.. bought viltrox speedbooster, then started buying EF lenses to go with it for focal length reduction and fstop increase.. maybe costly mistake?
I purchased the M50 with the 18-150mm EF-M lens. Still a compact lens and I enjoy the wider range. Not the most speedy lens like most of the EF-M line but it has worked well for me for travel and Disney. The 22mm has been on my radar and, now, so is the 15-45!
The 22 mm is fantastic. It's small it's Sharp end has great depth of field when you shoot it at f2

My thoughts are; if your priority is to make runaways with the smallest lens that will not interfere with your daily walk, you will learn to take good photos with it. But each lens equipment has its limitations. You can't achieve everything with just two lenses or even three. Every lens, be it 100 focal length, wide-angle, zoom or super zoom, is designed with a specific purpose in mind and there is no universal lens that will take a good photo in all conditions. Every photographer or filmmaker has a natural need to develop and change, know after some time you will change your mind again and again. You will learn new ways, you will learn new things, it's natural that you change your mind and lenses, not to mention photographic systems, etc. Know generalization that a fixed or zoom is better because it's small doesn't make sense to you and in the right conditions it suits you but the other person who perceives differently has a different sensitivity different sight other interests other priorities will not work your mind. Such a small conclusion, let's not generalize. Personally, I don't consider the 15-45mm 3.5-6.3 IS STM. for a good lens for everything it is very average but you can take quite nice photos in bright light because after dark it is useless. The zoom knob is very weak there. I'd rather have 4 lenses and a heavy backpack when hiking than this small and shallow lens. I prefer to make more stops to rest, think deeper and think about some scenery. Than to run around and click hundreds of pointless photos and have everything in the pictures and nothing fantastic and beautiful at all. I prefer to have 2-3 breathtaking photos that I like to come back to and brag about to everyone and be proud of them. I consider the 15-45 to be an average lens and it's just the beginning of the adventure. Which gets bored very quickly and cannot be developed, so I gladly got rid of it in favor of fixed-focal lenses. By the way, I have lost weight and am in good shape, and I am proud of my photo library. I don't know how you decorated these photos such good photos with this lens but you surprised me for sure you are a more experienced photographer I'm just starting and learning :). You should make a guide on how to take good 15-45mm photos. I guess you mistook them for 22mm f2 because this one is perfect and ridiculously small Canon m50 I take in my pocket
sweatshirts and even for shopping and for a beer when I go or walking the dog almost everywhere is great because bright and easy it takes great photos by itself. 15-45mm is too hard for me and still weak. Is the secret of this 15-45mm lens to use a tripod as low as possible ISO and longer exposure times? Greetings from Wrocław :)
Thanks Tomaz for the nice comment here. Lots of info in there. Most photographers don't know what they need when they first start out so I think the point was that this is a good starter lens until you learn more of the nuts and bolts of photography. Then you can start to branch out and see what you need.

I am new to this, I use the kit lens all the time. I only bought one other lens, 55-200 mm on ebay for $150. I have not used it yet, just arrived yesterday. I want a portable system. Great video but the weakness of the 15-45 is the f6.3 when zooming in and I don't much like using the flash. That said, I'm off to a party tonight and I'll be taking the 15-45 with me. Also in the bag tonight will be that ole Canon f1.8 50mm with the Commlite adapter and the Viltrox speedbooster. Taking crop factor into consideration and the effects of the speedbooster I'll have 80mm and a 57mm there. One aspect of a speedbooster is that it takes the f1.8 and delivers f1.2, so I won't be too grumpy if it's quite dark.
Sounds like a good setup for what you are doing. In the future you may want to look at the 22 mmf2 it's a great lens to complement the kit lens. And it's much smaller than the 50 mm with the adapters.
Hi, I was going to detail my other kit but had to get a move on. I do a lot of live band work and sometimes get opportunity to have multiple angles so I still have a t4i and EOS M. Well, I sold a t3i before getting the M50, which I knew would become my #1 camera by default but rapidly became my favourite camera ever. Mirrorless Canon it is then. The ability to adapt and speedboost EF and some EF-S lens seals the deal.
In the event (party) the lighting was terrible, dimmed and disco. Some interesting light being thrown around but the 15-45 was immediately a non-starter. Too dark. The only thing making the 50mm plastic fantastic useful in the situation is the f1.8 that can go as far as f1.2. The lens is known for poor autofocus, but stick it on an M50 with a speedbooster and there's big improvement all round.
Being a party I just took one small bag. Normally I take a full kit bag with hacked EF-S 18-55 kit lens and 24mm pancake (which I've found no love for despite all the good reviews), Kamlan EF-M mount 28mm f1.4 manual and the Sigma 28mm f1.8 (too big for the main bag, too insanely fab to leave at home) but again I get 2 'versions' of it, depending on the adapter used. I should also add that in photo work I usually have a Vanguard Veo 3-legged monopod with a pistol grip ball head - very steady and flexible.
Thanks for the advice on the 22mm. It'd give me an equivalent of 35mm, which would be perfect. With my disappointment with the EF-S 24mm (becomes 38mm) I feel I'm lacking in this area so the EF-M 22mm is definitely in with a shout. That said, my next purchase will be bigger with a heavy EF 70-200 or something like that.

Sigma 16mm f/1.4 for ef-m
Canon EF-M 15-45mm kit lens
Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 (with the canon adapter)
I mostly use my two prime lenses, but I have been really impressed with some of the images taken on the kit lens
How do you like the sigma? I almost bought it the other day. Decided on the Canon 11-16 to get a bit wider.
@@BillEricPhotography I really like the sigma. It is very sharp, and has exceptional build quality. It might be a little bigger and heavier than you are looking for. The m50 is my only camera body, so I don't mind the extra size vs the 22mm. I don't do any vloging, so I don't miss the image stabilization. I mostly do landscape photography and portraits, occasionally attempting telephotography and this lens does all of that.
I also have friends and family that have the 22mm lens, so the sigma allowed me to have more options than if I had gotten the 22mm.
I just picked up the Sigma 56mm and so far it's great. Like yup said it's big but feels good on the camera.
True, I used the 15-45 which is way better than I expected (EOS M3). Got the 22 as well. Then I got the 11-22 :-) That one is truly a must for landscape photographers or like me, airshow photographers :-) I can get in close and get the full shot. Also got the 18-150 and the Macro 28mm. Cause next to my airshow kit (Canon 80D) I love this smaller set. With the 22mm it fits in my pocket, gives me really nice and sharp images....wow....

I have vilrtox adaptor + 50mm (in studio + outdoor portrait's) and the 15-45mm kit lens. I prefer kit lens for outdoor and mostly landscape photography. Nice tip there. Yes the kit lens is a life saver.

I bought the M50 over a year ago. I never like the kit lens. It was OK for video but I found it lacked dynamic range for photography. It picked up the 22 mm lens and the 55--250 APC USM lens. Then I added the 32mm lens. I have subsequently tried to use the kit 15-45 a number of rimes. it just does not seem sharp to me. I also picked up an EOSR with the holy trinity using Tamron lens and the Canon 4L for the 16-35. .I use the m50 as the camera I carry in my backpack every day. The 22mm lens is always on the camera. When I go to the park I use the 55-250 which is a relatively small zoom.
That's pretty much how I have been using the M50 as a second camera that's very portable. I still use my Nikon for most of my photography. maybe you have a bad copy of the kit lens because I have had no sharp as issues with mine.
I agree- this is a great lens- for what I do, mostly skyscapes, so lots of light and not a problem stopped down. I just purchased the 22mm too, for low light and street stuff. I still use a Canon 760d dslr, and I have the Meike adaptor for my EF lenses- works perfectly at 1/4 of the price. The main thing for me is portability and quality- still using an M3.
I just ordered a couple of Maura and mount lenses the 11 to 16 and the sigma 56 mm 1.4. I really enjoy the small size in the portability of this system. It doesn't give me everything I like about my DSLR but when I'm traveling it's perfect. The 22 is a little beast of a lens!
