This is such an important gig in the history of Nirvana. This was the first time Kim and Thurston from Sonic Youth saw Nirvana live. Sonic Youth would later become their patrons and mentors, getting them on Gold Moutain Entertainment and signing with DGC and also inviting Nirvana to tour with them i Europe during the summer of '91.

There's a gig that Sonic Youth did in 1984 out in the Mojave Desert. The Meat Puppets and the Minutemen (RIP D. Boon, 1958 - 1985*) and other bands were also there. Thought I'd just pass that along. It's on film under the title "Desolation Center."

This show took place 45 minutes away from my house and since Nirvana played at J.C. Dobbs in Philadelphia, PA the night before (July 12, 1989) Nirvana would of Drove down the Highway passed my Town to get to Hoboken, NJ for this Maxwell's Show on July 13, 1989.
But Yes, this was the first time Kim and Thurston from Sonic Youth and J Mascis from Dinosaur Jr seen Nirvana Live.
They were brought there by Susan Tennet (who worked with DGC and Sonic Youth and had an office in Hoboken)
After the show Nirvana hung out with Sonic Youth, Nirvana first Opened up for Sonic Youth for 8 shows in August 1990 on Sonic Youth's Goo West Coast Tour (Nirvana had Dale Crover on drums at the time as they didn't have a drummer). Then after Recording Nevermind Nirvana opened up for Dinosaur Jr for 10 shows June 10-20, 1991 on Dinosaur Jr Green Mind West Coast Tour And then Nirvana Toured with Sonic Youth in August 1991 across Europe which some was documented in the film "1991 The Year Punk Broke" by Dave Markey.

It always amazes me when celebrities have video footage of themselves in their childhood. Kurt's family made home videos of him as young as 2 yrs.
Even in the early 60's, families had video cameras.
I have zero footage of myself as a child, and I'd five almost anything to see myself in childhood.
As a child, it would be easy to mistake me for Kurt's brother; we are 83 days apart in age and I am both artist and musician, as was Kurt.
I'm a better artist, he was a better musician. I'm working on the music.

he just made the stage image of nirvana too metal here. he takes the edge with his random insincere headbanging and I am sure Kurt was aware of it. Its so important for a band to play good but also to look good. Check the book Commando of Johnny Ramone where he insisted on their stage behaviour where Joey was placed in the middle and was not allowed to dance, wiggle, etc. and DeeDee had to be a mirror reflection of Johnny, to move back to the speakers and front to the crowd only when Johnny does that. Nothing is random.

Yeah most on board mics on those big vhs cameras seemed to actually pick up sound very nice. Also, looks like this was synced up to a tape recording. So that helped on the audio side of things. I've used the zoomh4n for live recordings , and that thing rocked! You could have soundboard in, and onboard room mics recording at the same time on 4 separate tracks. Then blend room with soundboard to get a really nice full sound, and sync with the video.
