Not that it's likely to happen, but I would LOVE to see The Doctor and The Rani and The Master all square off against each other again. They're all Time Lords, brilliant and know each other's faults and flaw. That would be a great story to watch......
I truly thought when I saw Missy, her look, they way she was written, even her actions and expiriments that it would be revealed she was The Rani and that minion of hers the Master. But alas, it was not meant to be. X.x
+Deana Kruseman That is what I thought too and I was so deeply disappointed that it wasn't the case. It would have been awesome to see the Master come back with Rani and they gang up on the Doctor. Dark Water had so much potential yet when we got to Death In Heaven it was a flop.
@@deanakruseman5576 me too it either that or a brand new character could of being Masters daughter that would being interesting the masters daughter kissing the doctor that would made more sense
Moffat's reasoning was that not many fans would know who the Rani is, so no point bringing her back. This was before he brought back both the Great Intelligence and the Ice Warriors.
It is now my headcanon that The Doctor and The Rani used to date when they were at school, but she ended up dumping him because he wanted to hang out with The Master
+Russell Tietjen I agree with part of this and glad I'm not the only one that sees it, but I think there's more to it. That she was with both of them at some point. Some may not agree with this but I also see it that the Master and the Doctor were together at some point. So it's more complicated than what ordinarily happens. But it ended because Rani is not a loving/caring person or rather she cares more about her work/experiments than anything else. The Master is too loving[obsessive]. The Doctor wanted to escape both of them because of their domineering personalities[even though he does/did care about them] and escape Gallifrey all together and have different adventures/redeem himself.
yeh it was a missed opportunity not to have michelle Gomez just be the rani she had the same clear blue eyes as kate, but gender politics was all they cared about.
I think that was just an excuse not to bring her back. Regarding the Ice Warriors it was Mark Gatiss's idea which he lobbied for and Moffat initially opposed.
Agreed, at least on Romana's part, she totally should return, either as the Doc's companion once again, a recurring character, or even given a spinoff series of her own :3
"Curse the pair of you!" She acts like they're still friends. An annoyed girl commenting on a bunch of boys. They are not too different from us humans. ;-)
I'd love to see the Doctor deal with the Rani and Master again...and it might even work if you have Kate O'Mara to return and have her play "big sister" to "pesky younger brothers" John Simm and Matt Smith, as she did with Anthony and Colin.
Let me think of possible time lords still alive - Susan (highly likely), the Master, the Rani, Romana, and I bet you anything tha their is a entire colony of time lords that survived.
Ya know, strangest thing, I honestly remember hearing her mentioned when he also mentioned the daleks and master, but all of a sudden, I rewatch the episode, and she isn't mentioned. It's like Moffat quickly removed that line to let his statement stand, please tell me I'm not the only one
Well, they resurrected The Master to fight, it's not difficult to think that they drafted all other renegade Time Lords, even against their wills, to fight. They just might not have been as lucky as The Doctor and The Master were to escape, though.
That what was implied that female Time Lords could change their appearance at will with regeneration in their early cycle whereas the males can't without proper aesthetic training but they all threw that out the fucking window with this intergender bullshit.
That's the beauty of it though. They're not quite as "virtuous" as the Doctor. So, they're probably in hiding, just like The Master was. This leaves room for Moffat to expand on the future stories. Obviously, we're going to need more defined villians / rivals for the Doctor if he wants to match The Master, the Silence, River Song, and all the other things he's faced.
Theres every reason to bring her back. Her first appearance was great, although they had a miss at her second appearance...but it would be great....she isnt after power, she is after knowledge.....which proves she would be a great villain to reappear....aw well, guess will have to wait until moffat leaves
I have to agree. The Rani was a really original and interesting character (and Kate O'Mara played her beautifully), but she only existed because by this point the Master had been defeated so many times he was just becoming a joke.
I can sort of see why the various show runners haven't brought the Rani back - she works well as a tertiary or secondary villain who gets caught up in the Master and the Doctor's various shenanigans - or when she's after some other goal and the Doctor gets in the way - but it's difficult to sculpt a story *around* that Not to mention that her 'dreadful' and 'implacable' background is that she accidentally created a set of giant carnivorous mice that ate the Lord President's cat (as well as badly injuring the Lord President) and the Time Lords Being the dreadfully pedantic and petty bureaucrats that they are Banished her for it It'd be kind of a pain in the ass to sculpt a story around someone that one dimensional
@milllybob Yes, I agree. i don't understand the Doctor being the Last of the Timelords when there were plenty of renegades in Time Lord history. There could be a number of Timelords still alive around the universe. I highly doubt the renegades all came back to help the Timelords, the society that banished them. The other renegades can't all be like the Doctor.
So much untouched potential. Steven Moffat should have brought back the Rani instead of making the Master Missy. We still don't know how the Doctor and the Rani know each other. I mean maybe besides the audios and other mediums but I generally only consider the show itself to be canon.
Wouldn't it be good for The Rani to appear again? Curse you moffat for not deciding to bring her back!!! Although she was mentioned in A Town Called Mercy :-)
@Goodthinkful I really don't know what you mean by that and I don't know which of my comments you are replying to. I'm guessing that one.^ I still don't understand the comment.
@hlapidu2 I don't know if the Doctor is the only one who can't choose his appearance. I do know that it seems like the time ladies CAN choose their appearnce and as for the Master maybe he is just skilled enough to be able to do that. You are right in Destiny of the Daleks Romana chose her appearance. I'm sure Rani could do it too. At the same time I do agree with SuperSmasher1 I think in this particular scene Rani meant her clothing, but yes I do think that Rani can choose her appearance.

Best part of the whole story is the Rani mocking the Doctor and the Master for taking their childhood rivalry to such massive heights.
A compassionate and intelligent side of the Rani.
I wish the BBC had brought back the Rani instead of making the Master regenerate into Missy.
