  • first pruning of what may be the toughest species of tree to use for bonsai material...
the tree seems to be doing great but downsizing this foliage with ramification will be the biggest challenge on this tree..
hopefully in a few years with proper branch placement this tree will become a nice specimen...
the sycamore tree was collected early this spring...
i'm hoping to repot and style next year...
i need to find a large pot that works with this tree... so keep and eye out for me...

Good job! I was really pleased to see the new growth on that big monster, once it fills in it's gonna be epic. I know what you mean about "once I started bonsai I wonder how many different types of trees I can bonsai"! LOLO. I'm right there with ya brother! I pruned my maples back today so... I'm in Texas but we have very similar weather. Thanks for the video it's kind of encouraging me to go out and Yamadori! 💚🌱

I have a collected Sycamore coming along nicely. I think the trick is to keep it pruned back tight and try not to let it go too leggy. Defoliate the bigger leaves too

Cool video! Everywhere I've looked says you can't use a sycamore for bonsai... I'll carry on with mine now!

Francisco Martinez say whaaaaat? Florida is rapidly becoming a Mecca for Bonsai. Look into tropicals of which there are plenty to collect. I just started at the begining of 2017 but would be happy to assist with some sites, youtubers and nurseries if ya like. So many have advised me all ready.

+Harold Walter, I totally agree! I live in the tundra of South Dakota so the tropical/indoor Bonsai are my only options, right now. I recently came across a great tree native to...FL that is called a Gumbo Limbo tree that is a fast grower & as such, an excellent specimen for Bonsai! Hope that helps! Peace.

Hey BnB! Hmm a sycamore. I do recall an old trick for minimizing leaf size...I think! You can trim off the large leaves {oops, I accidentally typed HANDS} Ha, & then bombard the tree with high light! The Botany of this is the continued need for the photosynthesis so it will 'need' the new little buds & will also fill out nicely & more quickly!
Okay, now a couple of questions...
1.} Are you {like me} tempted to at least attempt to repot the cuttings?
2.} Is 'back budding' & suckers the same thing?
Sehr gut! Bestimmt! ;-) Sic Transit Gloria Mundi!

I've got the leaves down to a bit smaller than hand size on mine.

Just saw this video. Super cool. How is this tree doing now? Are you having success with back budding, ramification and leaf reduction?

I have two sycamore trees in my front yard that i always wondered if i could turn into bonsai or not, ya know with the giant leaves and whatnot lol. Im now going to try one thanks to your vid xD. I wonder if defoliating would make the leaves smaller, im new to bonsai so im not sure if there are other methods to do that.

ibowlhammer I'm not sure how it would react to being defoliated..
I'm just trying to keep this one alive this year since it was just collected...

Nice! I just picked up a sycamore and want to attempt to keep it in a container for bonsai. I was wondering what soil you are using? I am still a big novice, but I know trying to keep such a large tree in a container can be a challenge.

Matt Kaz mixture of several different soils.. I'd get some cheap bonsai soil and add crushed lava to that mix..
