Hi, at 1:56 I think those are cut marks left by leaf cutter bees. Cheers, nice looking maple mate.
cheers, yeah i would imagine it is them too!
Excellent video, very interesting
cheers :)
I love the shape this tree is taking on - gives me some great ideas with my Norways I'm beginning to develop. The leaf damage is probably from leaf-cutter bees. They make these semi-circular incisions as they harvest material as food for developing eggs. When they find a plant they like, they really go to town on them, but they are great pollinators and pest control.
I see fungus on most of our garden maples in late summer. Probably a sign of some sort of stress, but it doesn't seem to knock them back too much. Personally, I think that maple leaves have so much sugar that it makes them prone to infection. A spray with 10% mineral oil (in the evening, then keep shaded for 3 days; repeat every 10 days) may help. Some people also use 10% milk spray to control fungus tho' I've not played with this yet.
Do you use the leaf pinching technique throughout the entire growing season or just in spring?
Cheers Sue, yeah i would say the bees are to blame too. and i agree about the suagr in the leaves, i think that helps the fungus for sure. I will have to remember to give that spray a go too.
as for the pinching. i just do that initially and they leave it. seems to be just the right amount of vigorous suppressing
I had some mold like that on some of my trees this past season. For me, if could have been a watering and not getting enough sun to dry the leaves afterwards. I wasn't able to really treat it, but it didn't hurt the trees. Here's hoping for another wonderful year!
cheers, yeah i dont think the mould causes to much issue. ive seen it before, and it doesnt seem to have any long term issues, luckily
Someday will you do a tour of all your trees?
probably one day, when manage to get bigger place. right now they are shoved into a corner and all on top of each other and its a mess.
so for now you just have to watch them 1 at time, every week and see me cycle through them all.
@@BackGardenBonsai that is perfectly okay. I was thinking more like a time lapse. I realize that is a alot of work on your part. Cheers!
Looks like a beauty. I’m sure that big scar will heal up eventually. Those caterpillars can be stinkers!
Cheers, yeah the caterpillars are annoying, luckily they only go for the trees im not too bothered about.
@@BackGardenBonsai that’s good! Same, they usually stick to my garden plants.
I think in May it looks perfect broski. I love the big scar...light a like lightning damage 😎⚡️⚡️...the new buds and branching look well balanced too so with no pruning it will surely look even more amazing this May. Cheers 😎🍺🍺
cheers bro, yeah i think around that time it looks best. those smaller leaves make all the difference!
Foistski
🤨👍🏻
That’s really growing nicely. Looks great Ian.
