Mixed voice can seem so elusive because our heroes make it look too easy!
Trying to sing a whole song with lots of mixed voice, or studying a particular vocalist's approach often leaves you feeling defeated... Like you've got too far to go, so you might as well just throw in the towel now.
That's why I did this video! I've cherry picked 5 short mixed voice melody lines from different artists that all teach us something very specific about how to use or maintain a strong and purposeful mix!
Study them with me. Try some things with your own voice based on what I observe. You'll be amazed at what can happen with your voice when you focus on the right things.

Wow, I like the way how this man explains and how he teaches. I followed him like 2 or 3 weeks ago and start doing these things.. practising the vowels, relaxing my face, cracking my voice then reach the notes and realized how rock vocalists sing... And bruuuhh I can't believe all the changes in my voice thank to these tips. I wish I knew about this channel years earlier. I thought all the singers were born with a gifted voice until I saw this man called Chris, giving us infos that could cost money for singing lesson and he's giving all these tutorials for free. "Let yourself fail, let yourself experiment". This guy could teach an elephant how to sing 😎.

The biggest thing Chris Liepe has said that helped me was "Let yourself fail". Once you get out of the hurdle of sounding silly you can achieve great things. Now I'm so used to doing silly exercises, pushing my voice to where it sounds bad, that I'll even do it in front of people and let them laugh about it

For me a look at Freddie Mercury would be amazing, I can do the high and the low, but not the in between. Examples, show must go on is one hell of a challenge I think would help many, also the highest part of who wants to live forever. I have watched “other coaches” no names needed, who are all about them selves and use vocal stems to show how better they are than the original recording artists, blindly in their own arrogance. I thank you sincerely for you humble professional manner and respectful way in Ch you approach your videos!

I literally JUST finished tracking vocals on a cover of the immigrant song and wondered which song you were gonna mention in this video judging by the Plant picture in the thumbnail. It's funny cause I was trying to try and do it less nasal but nothing really sounded right so I just went with the original more whining siren-y style he did and it ended up sounding way better. Thank you for the conformation.
That hard onset Justin does to hit that high note I've found is a lot easier for me than to try to climb up to a note. I found that out trying to do some of the higher notes on Beyond the Wheel.
Great video, Chris. One of my faves. You sang beautifully in it and guess what, I did too thanks to your tips. It's really about knowing what muscles we need to activate and which not. I would argue one the biggest traps when getting a good mix voice is that some of us think we need to push our way into it. And we do so from the throat. But the throat only gives shape to the sound. The powerhouse, as you put it in your course, is in the diaphragm. Counterintuitively, it feels more like a release than muscling through. Thanks mate.
When I first started discovering and training my mixed voice I found that Ozzy was one I could actually do and practicing his songs has helped me get to the next level. Great video as always!

The song that helped me discover mixed voice was Seasons by Chris Cornell. It wasn't something that I realized straight away - that I was using mixed voice - but it had a distinctly different feeling once I had it inside my own voice. After my ears got used to the sound I started to hear it more in my own voice when warming up, and could call upon it more easily.
The biggest part I felt was improvement in my 'ear' listening to my own voice, and singing with chest voice from a higher position.

I discovered your videos while I was searching for someone who focusses on what is important to know about the voice and the ability we can get by training and using it in different vocal styles. Now one of my favorite rock singers of all time is Lou Gramm who I adore because of his former ability to sing in a very high voice and with power. He touches my heart, because he always sings with emotion and passion. Could you perhaps make a video about him and explain, how to succeed in approaching his voice? I'm trying and trying to sound a little bit "Lou Grammish", but especially the high notes he's hitting seem to be out of reach for me.
So if you could give some advice concerning this problem, I'd be very happy! In the meantime I have watched quite a lot of your videos and I'm very impressed, also because of the friendly and passionate way you explain. Thumbs up for you! Really great! Greetings from Germany, Armin
I´ll definitely try it. Specially the Chris Cornell one, seems to be the next step for me. Right now I´m trying to find my way into Opera-ish kind of sounds. But I´ve found I need a lot of control for that. Maybe you can make a video about that style of singing.Thanks a lot for your new video. It helped me a lot. :)
I find that opera type of sound quite challenging, for me I watched Michael Trimble on RUclips. Long videos, but picked up so much from them. Chris's videos and especially his online course got me my mix in the fashion shown on this video. I'm 52 this year and can do everything in this video with little effort now. 1 year ago, wouldn't have dreamed of doing this.
Thank you for this. I can sing mixed voice but easily get tired. I'm more of a backup singer but since it's hard to find a singer with the same musical taste and dedication I was forced to do lead vocal duties. I really hate my voice. But watching your videos explaining techniques that is so fool proof, you add a chunk of confidence in me on each of your videos. Thank you very much. By the way the greatest part is when I watch your videos it always feels that you are talking directly to me and that is super helpful. Again thank you and stay safe always.

I've always thought that the very end of Whole Lotta Love by Zep is a great moment in mixed voice study. The "ooah... ooooOOAAAAAAAHHHHoooeyeah" part. It starts right around 4:39 in the song.

That's what works for me, and depends on what i want to do.
For me, the best warmup songs are old Pete Seeger folk songs. The melodies are so simple that it's a perfect way to get ready to sing more challenging stuff.

Big misconception, the opening wail in Immigrant Song was sung in chest voice, not mix. It sounds like mixed voice due to the mixing of the recording and the fact the vocal line was overdubbed (like the coda of Stairway to Heaven). If you listen to the early live versions of the song from 1970 you can hear his voice a lot more clearly than the studio record. Robert sings that line in full chest with a lot of power. His chest voice and range was crazy.
The notes are fine for me… I’ve always found it hard to safely add grit, I have like a voice I can go too after I’m in my flow performing, but it’s not the healthiest … I can last about 2-3 gigs in a row and then burn out a bit

Very helpful video! I especially like the Steven Tyler part. I don't know if Steven Tyler "mixedish" was a word or not, but it is now! The way you sing "back" at 4:05 into the video, could you explain how it is that right at 4:05 when you sing the note, there is only a very trebly, high pitch type of distortion at first, but within a half second or less, I hear a different kind of distortion make its way into the note, a more gravelly, fuller type of distortion that isn't there at the onset?
What is creating that second type of distortion? Is that a sound you can only get by exploiting the break in your voice? It sounds more like chest register distortion than the distortion that takes place right at the onset. I'm guessing the reason it takes place slightly after you initially sing the note and then builds is that you're gradually adding more air as you hold the note.
That second type of grit that you bring into it isn't something I'm hearing I Tyler's version; I'm hearing more of a trebly, scraping sounding distortion when Tyler sings "back." I like your version better.

The way you analyze the different ways of vocalization is unmatched by any other teacher I know of. I am a devoted fan! I learn so much but it is mostly male centric. Can a female voice learn from these videos in the same way that a male can? I hope someday you are able to find a female clone of YOU out there somewhere. As one of your female students, this would just be the absolute ultimate! Do you have any plans to do this in the covid free future?
Females can learn A TON from these... Yes, but I'm going to be publishing LOTS of videos on female singers in the upcoming months!

Chris, on the Perry note, if we listen very carefully, on really good headphones, he vowel modifies to a "nah" which frees him up. Then he has the palate room up top to finish off at the very end with a quick, subtle "i" completing the dipthong. Perry is tough, because we all get stuck trying to get his unique timbre...God, do I know...lol!! But as I've said before, go back to some of these earlier guys like Lou Gramm, Steve Walsh, Jimi Jamison, Bobby Kimball, Glenn Hughes, Mike Reno. These guys were beasts!

You can always try... and see what happens. Just give yourself patience and grace!! Don't expect to sound like them. Expect to sound like the developing YOU
Hello, do you mind if i have a question to ask?
In the early months of my singing journey (what should i call it lmao). I was able to hit a note like G4 with a distortion and it was a great, but when i started to learn mix voice, my voice sounds more nasally and so clear with no distortion at all.
I did hit higher notes with my mix voice, but sometimes a verse of a song needs to be sang with a distortion which now im unable to do it anymore. I have no idea why, but im willing to get it back. what should i do?

The key is going to be working with milder forms of compression with your mixed voice, now that you've figured out that feel. If you try to go right to distortion (a more extreme form of compression) your muscles get confused because they haven't gotten the feel down with the different vocal positioning yet. But try to just work with compression on those high notes and LET it happen! (Have you joined my free course yet?) (or my FREE 7 highly effective... course yet) ? www.mymusicalvoice.com
This happened to me at first too! Trust in the process, be patient, be intentional and listen to your body! (Also record your practices)

What about the chorus in cemetery gates by pantera, can you use that to practice mixed.
Yes for sure, but they are VERY high and difficult to get that tone Phil gets. It'd be best to start with some things that are less challenging and work up to that incredible performance at the end of Cemetery Gates!
First I can’t sing in head voice past Hi C so can’t do any of these examples :-( When I try to add mix/grit I wind up sounding like Gonzo from the muppets

@@chrisliepe yes i can do head voice but cant add mix and can’t do your exercises above Hi C. Since I don’t like my head voice and can’t do mix, i wind up bringing keys down to chest voice, using head voice sparingly but then wears my voice out.

Hi Chris. I can hit the high mix notes and hit the lower mix notes. But when going between my Lower mix to my Upper, I struggle to let go of the chest influence, which acts like an anchor. I think I hold onto my chest too high up my range basically. Years of a bad habit. Any tips?
Ok, already making progress. Watched your video about Robert Plant singing his lower registry in mix. So I started singing stuff I'd normally place in chest in my mix and having a much easier time sliding up.
Great video, I'm going to try it, but I think that I naturally go with a thin thin mix, but my falsetto is so not relaxed over C5, that I rarely can mix higher than here, should I practice releasing my falsetto higher, because I can actgually sound like a flute and tensed up to Bb5 easily so I would love to have a better tone
Practice singing in your head voice up in the C5+ range for awhile. Spend lots of time there... don't worry about full mix. Get comfortable, get to know it, play with it, record with it. Think "down" on each note. It'll come!
@@chrisliepe Ooow thanks I'm going to do this, because I can thrill up to C5 almost easily, but everything higher depends if I'm relax or not. Somedays I'm able to sing around D5 in falsetto easy, but others I'm forcing myself to go higher than C5! I guess practice makes perfect. Thanks a lot, your videos made me believe in my singing voice and I started singing from seeing your videos ;)))
