A few things that weren't mentioned in the video:
1.Power phial takes significantly longer to get into amped state then the other phial types. I personally don't use power phial at all because of that.
    2. If you morph after an a attack in sword mode you will do a double morph slash, just like the morph after the heavy slam in axe mode.
    3. the a attack in sword mode does 2 hits by default but 3 if you use it after the x combo or double morph slash
    4. The phial explosion in amped state always do the same damage, no matter which attacks cause them (their damage is still dependent on the hitzones of the monster) so in amped state you want to do as many hits as possible.
    5. The armor skill rapid morph does drastically increase the speed and power of your morph attacks.
My default combo in amped state with rapid morph is: overhead smash (or forward overhead smash) into double morph slash into the now triple slash with a into the double morph slash back to axe into either a rising slash or one wild swing which both combo into overhead slash or forward overhead slash directly after the morph for repositioning. The inputs for that: X(or forward and X) into ZR into A into ZR into two times X or A and then X or forward and X into ZR and so on

    Things you forgot to mention:
1- You move much slower in Sword Mode than in Axe Mode. You also can't spam rolls as much as in Axe Mode.
2- Your Sword Mode attacks grant you built-in Mind's Eye (Attacks won't bounce).
3- Compressed Element Discharge sends your teammates flying, so be wary when to use it.
Overall, great video. Keep it up man!

  • @gustavogonzalez3591

    Hey Rurikhan, great video.
You forgot about the morphing movement options. When you dodge in sword mode and press ZR, you do a morph slash but the animation is different and makes the hunter advance a bit more, also if you press ZR after any Sword attack while moving the stick away from the monster, you make a morphing slash against the monster while the hunter moves backwards avoiding an attack, which can lead into an advancing morph slash with the sword by pressing ZR moving the stick to the monster.

  • @kittah4
    @kittah4 3 года назад +15

Haven't noticed this in the comments yet, but Invincible Gambit has three follow ups. You can press X to do an advancing forward chop with the axe, backward X to do a reverse spinning slash with the axe (same animation as the wild swings ZR finisher), or ZR to morph to sword. Soaring Wyvernblade may be very hype, but Invincible Gambit is great for utility and mobility.

Love your guides! One thing to keep in mind on the switch skills, the compressed discharge sends your teammates flying. I like using it in solo, because of the lower animation commitment, and if you use it after Switch Charger (ZL+A -> ZR -> X+A -> X) you can get off the explosion, without costing you any amp gauge.
With you on the forward overhead slash, just feels more satisfying to me, and it lets me morph to double slash, with the triple slash follow-up in sword mode, then the flurry. Using a dragon or poison (i think) phial, this gets me straight into amped mode, even without the axe buff.
Zero sum discharge, into a soaring wyvern blade follow-up, is so satisfying.
My usual switch skill setups are:
Solo: Forward Overhead slash, Invincible Gambit, Compressed Elemental Discharge.
Multiplayer: Forward Overhead slash, Soaring Wyvern Blade, ZSD.

Rise added the ability to do morph attacks just by morphing while holding forward while idle. You no longer have to morph mid combo to do morph attacks. Axe to sword does the run-in overhead, sword to axe does the advancing roundslash. You can use these instead of the normal active morph attacks just by dodging forward before executing the forward idle morph.

Great video, here are a few important things to know that weren't mentioned:
Level 3 rapid morph is extremely strong. The best dps combo* with rapid morph 3 (based on my own testing and what is used in speedruns) is a draw/morph attack (ZR) followed by a sword double slash (A) and then a morph into axe mode (ZR) looped. Basically if you are starting with your weapon sheathed or from axe mode do ZR, A, ZR repeated or if starting in sword mode A, ZR, ZR repeated. Morphing into axe mode following a sword double slash or heavenward flurry does a stronger 2 hit morph which is very strong. Also, power phials charge amped mode much slower than other phials. When not using power phial its not even necessary to get the heavy slam buff because doing a double slash followed by heavenward flurry should almost fill the gauge. When using rapid morph 3 power phial is also not as good because a large chunk of the damage from the high dps combo comes from axe attacks.
*Based on some crude testing I found that when comparing the highest dps combos with and without rapid morph 3 (in amped state) the rapid morph combo listed above is at least 15-20% stronger than the X,X,X,A combo mentioned in the video
Also personally I can't live without lvl 1 evade extender but 3 is just too much

    • @andersstrom5985

Edit: just another thing I didn’t see you mention about the zero sum discharge into soaring wyvern blade, when you get launched into the air off your zero sum discharge you can use the left stick to aim your soaring wyvern slash in whatever direction you like, so if the monster is bouncing around while you’re using zero sum, then it goes behind you or to the side while you’re in the air, you can aim the wyvern blade in any direction and always get them as long as they’re still in range

Great guide. Just a suggestion: a more general introduction to the weapon would be welcomed. Like “this is switch axe, a versatile weapon that can switch from sword and an axe.” Yadda yadda. And less mention of World. Basically treat us like we’re all complete beginners and know nothing about the weapon.

The compressed Discharge has invulnerability frames just before the explosion happens, I use invincible gambit to cancel the end of the animation witch adds up to more of a 'no fucks given' playstyle that I really enjoy. however you should probably use the regular discharge if you play with friends because they get flinched alot by the compressed one

I use two very different combinations for SA, my main weapon in Rise :
    1) Power phial, with Rapid Morph, Power Prolonger invincible gambit and condensed discharge. I don't necessarily need to charge the gauge, I just combo in and out of sword mode and get the charge eventually. A lot of immediate damage, and a lot of hyperarmor, to tank the faster monsters you can't Zero-Sum to death.
    2) Paralysis phial, with focus, health up (to prevent carts when glued to the monster) soaring wyvern blade and regular Zero-sum discharge. For slower targets and ZSD/soaring combo spamming, destroying weaker monsters for farming and using paralysis to get even more openings.
I usually alternate between the two, and I'm working on an exhaust set-up for multiplayer. If you have other ideas, I'll take 'em !

Different phials have different charge rates to get to amped state. Power Phials take much longer to get to amped then poison phials or exhaust phials. I mainly use the Forward Overhead Slash for the better morph combos as you get the Double Rising Slash Attack if you morph after it but the Forward Slash is better for faster (and more fluid imo) X axe combos. Speaking of morph combos, you get the Double Rising Slash Attack morph attack after any overhead attack in axe mode (Overhead Slash/Forward Overhead Slash/Heavy Slam) while you get the Morph Double Slash after any A attack in sword mode (Double Slash/Heavenward Flurry). One thing to also mention is that the sword to axe morph attack gives you a little bit of sword gauge to help maintain morph combos. You can also do a morph attack right after a Soaring Wyvern Blade to cancel the landing animation then immediately use the Switch Charger silkbind to move out of the way. The switch charger gives you a small invincibility window so if you time it right, you can ignore roars and whatnot with it. When using the Element Discharge/Zero Sum Discharge, you can pop it early by doing back X (where back it relative to the direction your character is facing). Note that with Zero Sum Discharge you are immune to most effects (Like roars) but you will still take damage if a monster does an attack and you can even die while doing a ZSD. You can go into an Element Discharge/ZSD faster after an A attack in sword mode than an X attack in sword mode. IIRC each X input in Element Discharge/ZSD does cutting damage so you can use that to help cut tails. Lastly is that Invincible Gambit give you some damage reduction when using it.

Couple things I wanted to add:
The morph from Sword to Axe also has two options, the single swing and the double swing. To get the double swing, morph after sword double slash, triple slash, or heavenward flurry. I think this is important to note when running Rapid Morph as the Axe Morph Double Swing has some amazing motion value but long animation.
Secondly, I didn't see the mention about different phials having different Amped Mode charge times. I don't know all of them, but Power Phial takes the longest to charge whereas Exhaust Phial requires about half the hits to get to Amped.
    Great guide!! Keep it up!

when you are doing the element discharge, you will still take damage if you latch on to the monster's attacking part. Carted a lot of times doing element discharge to Tigrex's face. But if you latch on to their backs (like Rajang's) you can avoid taking damage when it attacks

    • @riemaennchen
      @riemaennchen 3 года назад +2

It doesn't help that some of the Hitboxes in Rise aren't all that great. For example If you attach to Zinogres right paw he will still you hit you if he does a slam with his left paw.
And speaking of Tigrex, his tail spin will also hit you while you are clinging on to his head or wings.

    • @justsomejojo
      @justsomejojo 3 года назад +2

Latching onto backs is still kinda weird though. Goss Harag for example still damages you when it's flailing about while you clutch to its back. Judging what hits you and what doesn't is kinda hard in my opinion.

Hey there Rurikhan! First off I’d like to thank you for taking the time out to make these videos. I was a beginner to the monster hunter series when I first searched for tutorials and found yours to be the most in depth and informative. Every weapon I’ve used after watching your tutorials I’ve become quite efficient with. That brings me to my question. You seem to have an instructional video for every weapon but the one I’d like to learn next and am having a hard time finding a good video of, the bow. I don’t know if you’ll even spot this comment in the vast sea of the rest, but if you could make a video just like this one you did for the switch axe, it would be beyond appreciated! Best wishes man.

I love the switch axe! I prefer the overhead slash though. If you have rapid morph and especially power prolonger to the max, the best combo for me when I’m in amp state is to do a zero sum discharge, come back with a ZL+X soaring wyvern, do another zero sum discharge; if I didn’t end my gauge, do the same thing again; if not then recharge with ZL+A and go right back at it until I ran out of amp state.

Important bits I noticed were missing:
    1) You can morph into a Fade Slash from sword mode using Left Stick + ZR
    2) Going into Element Discharge/Zero Sum Discharge is significantly faster if you do it after an A attack. If you use it normally you have this awkward slow animation where you stab your sword forward trying to hit the monster, while if you do it after an A attack you will instantly just stab your sword into the monster to do the discharge.
Great guide otherwise though, just a lot of different things to cover.

Something to note: status phials, such as poison or exhaust phials, charge faster in rise than power phials!
Also, favorite build for the SA in rise so far:
    Amuldron Helm
    Amuldron chest
    Rath arms
    Ingot waist
    Amuldron legs
It gives you (with jewels but no charm yet):
    6 attack boost
    3 power prolonger
    3 rapid morph
    3razor sharp
Plus a few one slots for whatever you want!
Then if your weapon has a 2 slot, you can get level 7 attack boost
Then that leaves your charm completely up to whatever your best charm is! For instance I have one with counter attack 2 and a 2 slot so I have counter attack 3 on top of the rest of that! Great build for people without amazing charms yet!
Finally, high dps rapid morph combo (better when amped):
Forward and X in axe mode (overhead stronger but more animation), Zr to morph into double slash, A in sword mode for triple slash, Zr to morph into axe double slash and repeat!
Gives you the most hits in the least amount of time and with rapid morph stuff it’s very strong!

You can delay pressing X during Soaring Wyvern Blade to get a shorter angle on the follow up. It's good for shorter/smaller targets. Also if you have no sword gauge, you can't do the follow up, but you will do an attack with the axe if you still press X. My personal bread and butter combo is X>A>X>A>X>A in sword mode. When I need to get out of the way I morph into Axe and roll like hell. If the monster is pissed I like to switch to a hit and run style in axe mode with the forward overhead slash. Stick and move.

oh if no one has mentioned this yet. the zero sum discharged will clamp depending on where you are discharging if you are discharging near the tail it will clamp on the back of the monster. if you are near the leg it will clamp in the leg lastly if you are in the head it will clamp in the head. with a good partbreaker equip ZSD will be a crazy tool for farming parts you want to take out.

As a former SA main (P3rd and 4G) - regarding the forward slash, aside of it being a low commitment gap closer, it is (or at least was in the older titles) also good for hunting bnahabra and vespoid parts, as those suckers tend to move around a lot and explode when too much force is applied.

My favorite combo is ZR morph to sword, double swing, ZR morph to Axe, immediately ZR morph to sword, and repeat.
    So, the full combo is
    ZR, A, ZR, on loop.
The morph to axe after a double slash is a huge spinning chop that hits twice, and with Rapid Morph, it hits for anywhere between 150 to 230 on the final hit, depending on the monsters weak zone.

compressed finishing discharge is great if you hate having friends. the sword spin is a problem in party compositions with lots of melee, and becomes a bigger problem the smaller a monster is. condensed is absolutely my single-player go-to pick though!
kinda amazing how great both invincible gambit and soaring wyvern are. with an exhaust phial, you can zsd a monster's head and while still amped soaring wyvern back into the monster's head and morph into the overhead spam for a real good time!
