      They were also on The Bing Crosby Show playing a British Invasion type group (like on The Munsters where they sang I Want To Hold Your Hand). They appeared on Ben Casey but played a background instrumental while Marlo Thomas talked. And don't forget the movie, Get Yourself a College Girl (1964) with the Dave Clark Five and The Animals.

      @@John_Fugazzi the Standells also contributed the title song from the movie (1965)"Zebra In The Kitchen", which I believe starred one of those kid actors like Jay North of "Dennis the Menace" or a similar kid actor.

    On this day in 1967 {January 28th} the Standells performed "Dirty Water" on the late Dick Clark's 'American Bandstand'...
    Nine months earlier on April 28th, 1966 it entered the Hot Top 100 chart; eventually it peaked at #11 and spent 16 weeks on the Top 100...
    Fourteen years later in 1980 the Inmates took their covered version to #51 on the Top 100...
    The group's one time drummer Dewey Martin passed away on January 31st, 2009 at the age of 68...
    R.I.P. Mr. Martin and Mr. Clark {1929 - 2012}...

    Yes I think you are right about understanding alot when we are young, I guess we just dont have a way to show it. I have older bros and sisters so maybe my desire for knowing the
    60's comes from them? I was born in 1964 so I love seeing how people dressed and acted and everything right around the time I was born. Their clothes were the freakiest part of the 60's I think........... :)

    Lesley was probably pulling your leg. According to the Wikipedia site, the lyrics are "lovers, muggers and theives...". That's proably the right lyrics. Some websites are listing the lyrics as "lovers, fuggers and theives..." but I'm not sure if "fugger" is really a word. Song lyrics can be obtained from song lyric books. I've often looked up lyrics in books from the library.

    •  3 года назад

    yup! in fact after 20 years of searching record stores and swapmeets i found their first album in the most unlikeley place, the apartment downstairs had been evicted and there it was.. but one g and the comeplete opposite of this band, the fugs were probabally NOT fans of the standells, but i'm fans of both..
    thanks for the video, it's like watching instrument porn..

    • @robertorick6383

      The Fugs would never have been caught dead on stage dressed in those suits, much less invited to a TV show like "Hollywood Palace". Just picture them trying to open the show with a song like "I Couldn't Get High", and they would have been booted off the stage faster than Ed Sullivan had booted The Doors out of the studio just for saying "Higher" on television. The Standells, on the other hand look pretty classy here for a power-Garage-Punk group of the time. Just look at the way Dick Dodd twirls his drumstick while singing at the same time-pure showmanship. Fugs' leader Ed Sanders would more than likely just to have been happy to flip the camera man the bird just for kicks.

    I don't remember The Fugs because I lived in England and I was a small kid in the mid '60s. (They're an American group.) I read in Wikipedia how they got their name. The line in this song is probably "lovers, muggers and theives..." but I can't be sure without a lyric sheet. I've been trying to figure out the line for a long time now. I first heard the song when I was ten.

      It's a Vox Continental. And yeah, they were easier to carry than a B3. Easier than a Farfisa too - the Farfisa is a heavy, bulky thing folded up. But by 1968, everyone was ditching these things in favor of the big B.

    I think it's a Danish word so it might be ok. Hopefully it doesn't mean that in Danish. If you are interested in reading about Dick Dodd, the singer of the song, there is an article on the internet called "Winning Theme" which was originally published by the Boston Globe in 2005. I think he was a good singer and this is one of my favorite songs from the '60s. Sadly, the group doesn't perform on a regular basis anymore.

    There are many websites that list the objectionable word in the lyrics of "Dirty Water" but I think the people doing this are playing a prank. I didn't hear "Dirty Water" until I was 10 because that's when I moved to the U.S. In the '60s in England we used to hear only a small selection of music from the U.S. I've always been curious about the song "Dirty Water" because I grew up and still live in the Northeastern U.S. However, I've never been to Boston. I will definitely have to go there.

    How many groups were there back in the day with all members having an awesome haircut. John and Paul discovered the cut on a vacation to Paris after John inherited 500 pounds from an aunt. Upon returning to the UK, George quickly followed suit but Pete, who many girls adored, refused to give up his greasy duck's ass hair style. Poor Pete, his days were numbered, not because of his DA, but because Martin thought he sucked as a drummer. Enter Ringo and the rest of the story is historic.

      The band called “Question Mark & The Mysterians” were similar in that they had one huge hit “96 Tears” and have milked that for over 50 years - they are still performing at small venues. It’s easy for people to point out and criticize condescendingly a “One Hit Wonder” band, but these people are just envious.
      Having said this, I do think it would become terribly boring over time to play the same song 100’s of shows per year for over 50 years. That’s some lifetime career path! lol

      Sing the dam song. Is that not the reason why you are on the show in the first place? The people in the audience most likely came and PAID to watch them SING and PLAY the song! Is it so dam hard to sing the song? Sing the fucking song that is the only reason you are there. I know its not the bands decision. Its the stupid dumb ass tv executives.

    • @MarkRoberts-bj2me
      @MarkRoberts-bj2me 8 лет назад +1

      +LesSmith45 You have seen enough lipsync vids to know that the performers did not enjoy doing them. The TV technology was so primitive back then that group managers hesitated to let their band perform the track(s) live.
      Look at some old Stones vids, they look totally bored when they have to lypsinc. Then catch their very early appearance on "The Dean Martin Show" and dig the excitement of a live performance.

    • @littlemikey1954
      @littlemikey1954 8 лет назад +1

      +LesSmith45 Back in the '60s, attitudes were different. Fans were excited just to see the band perform, even if it was just a lip sync of their latest hit. Besides, many TV execs did not trust the bands, fearing they might change the lyrics or use a controversial lyric or two.
      The Rolling Stones on ED SULLIVAN changed the lyrics of "let's spend the night together" to "let's spend some time together." (The Doors kept the word "higher" in "Light My Fire".)
      Many artists treated their mimed performance as a joke, and it showed.
      The Royal Guardsmen, while miming "Snoopy Vs. the Red Baron", and Box Tops, while miming "The Letter", looked up during that airplane segment on the record they were miming.
      Zal Yanowsky of The Lovin' Spoonful, mimed and clowned around during "Darlin' Be Home Soon" (greatly infuriating John Sebastian).
      Good or bad, it is all part of rock 'n' roll history.

    • @littlemikey1954
      @littlemikey1954 8 лет назад

      +Mark Roberts The amplifiers were also smaller. Bands didn't use the huge power columns so common today. So there were potential problems. One was that the live performance done during the rehearsals was played to an empty auditorium. There was no way to predict how the performance would sound live when that auditorium was packed. Acoustics are different. If the fans are screaming, that would make it even more difficult. The solution was for the band to lip sync to the live performance taped during rehearsal. (at least they weren't miming to a 45.) The problem with the Monkees in concert, for example, was that the screaming fans were louder than the band itself. The Beatles at the Hollywood Bowl couldn't even hear themselves playing due to the screaming fans.
