I've always LOVED this song. The guitar riff is an all-time classic, one of the biggest in rock history. Small but true story of mine. Back in the late 70s, I was in a management training program at the St. Francis Hotel in San Francisco, fresh out of college with a hospitality degree. I was at the front desk working with a teammate on something when 4 or 5 guys came up and told me they were checking in. "Welcome, can I have your name, please?" One of them replied "Ray Davies." I knew from our expected VIP arrivals that the Kinks were coming in (we had a lot of celebs stay at that hotel), and i recognized him from my old vinyl LPs. I pride myself in my rock n roll trivia knowledge, but I really fumbled this one. I said, "Welcome. I absolutely love your song "Dirty Water.'" Davies and the guys looked at each other, and said, "Huh? I don't recognize that one, man, it's not one of ours." I felt like hiding under a carpet seam. Davies asked me to sing a bit of it. I thought why not, and I sang a line, and right away they caught on and smiled, had a good time with it, "That's the Standells, man, but I wish it was ours, it's a great song." This would have been somewhere in the 1979-1982 range.

Saw you guys when you opened for the Rolling Stones in Portland, 1966. You were great. I was learning guitar back then, and your song was a staple of all garage type bands for sure

Lest we forget some of their other classics, "Try It" and "Sometimes Good Guys Don't Wear White". I brought the 45 of "Try It" home when I was 12 (1967). Playing it on the family record player, my 19 year old prim and proper sister said "That's not a nice song!". Which was a delight to me and made me play it all the more. I have one of their albums. I like many other songs from that album, "Medication", "Little Sally Tease", "There's a Storm Comin' ", and of course they covered "Hey Joe". While not very musically complex and tonally challenged, they are a great 60s representation of Garage Band Music.

58 here! So ta VERRIE mutch for making me feel YOUNG again! He he ;-).
I've Luv-Luv-LUVVED this song from the instant I first dropped the needle into the Standells' dirty ol' groove of platter 1 of Lenny Kaye's FABtastick 'Nuggets - Original Artyfacts of The First Psychedelic Era' 2LP set. Never was $60 quid NZ* ever spent quite so well by me ever again (on music, at least. Oh, save maybe for that VERRIE nice fat German QUALITY vinyl pressing of Can's 'Tago Mago' I scored at a Record Fair in ChCh, NZ several years later...).
(*NZ$60 was a reasonably hefty price to pay for a Fair Condition 2nd-Hand copy of that seminal double LP back in, ummm...1980. But the crackle only made all those garage stompers sound that mutch BETTER, & crucially, it DIDN"T jump. Shweeet sweet memories! LoL)

If you are a Boston Bruin's fan - then you've been hearing this played at the end of their home games wins A LOT this year. Best record in the league, plus they recently got to 100 point faster than any NHL team in the history of the game. WOOOOO!!

Me too. I saw the rerun as a kid and went out to buy the record of I Wanna Hold Your Hand by the Standells, but they only had it by some group I never heard of called the Beatles. I was disappointed, but I still bought it.

Thanks, John. But we really think that the term "One Hit Wonder" is overused and demeaning for any performer(s) labeled as such. The Standells actually had four chart records on Billboard. They have inspired such groups as the Ramones and Stooges and also had quite a lot film and TV exposure, as seen in The Munsters "Far Out Munsters" episode, in which they guest starred, and of course the motion picture "Riot on Sunset Strip". Jimi Hendrix only had one recording that barely reached the Billboard top 20. Would he also be considered a One Hit Wonder?

@@thestandells6986 What became of the studio above a corner garage where this track was recorded. Is the actual building that housed garage still there? I'd think not but you never know.

It’s a longshot that you’ll see and reply but, did any of you guys wash windows in Woodland Hills right before the band got big?
A young guy came to wash our windows when I was little and talked about being in the Standells along with stories of Rockstar-ish 🌟adventures.
He was friendly, warm and somehow knew my family.
I’ve only one memory of him, from the back, in jeans, with slightly longish brown hair, as he washed a large picture window.
I was really young, too young to notice, but my mom and older sister thought he was hot!
Like everyone else, though, I’ve always loved this song.
Unlike everyone else, whenever I hear it, I also think of the handsome window-washer on the verge of incredible success. :)
