HO Scale Train Layout Extension - New Bridge and Line to Freight Yard

Поделиться
HTML-код
  • Опубликовано: 4 сен 2024
  • Back in April I built a line to my new freight yard, although functional it was too complex and ended up leading to many derailments. This was mostly because of an S curve I added at the time. I figured it was time something different was added to improve the route to the yard so I found a new way the line could be directed.
    Final plans involved relocating a switch on the mainline as well as building a new bridge connecting to a 22 radius curve located on a new extension to the layout. It's gonna take some adjusting to get it working properly but with the few trains I ran things seemed to be working well for a start.

I hope you’ll understand what I am trying to say ? As well as possibly having to passenger trains going from one city to another now that you have enough passenger cars ! Hay me and my grandfather model trains this was sort of our only thing we kind of did together.... As a hobby it was really cool I will never forget all the awesome times that I had with him... I was born into poverty and my grandpa adopted my mom the rest of my family doesn't really consider us a part of it and my grandmother has some issues with accepting my mom still to this day but she does love me still thankfully unfortunately my grandfather passed and most of my train set is gone now the board that we built is in storage and because well I haven't been successful in life I don't have anywhere to put it I can't afford a home of my own or a large enough space... Watching your channel reminds me of all these happy times I had building my own weird Frankenstein locomotives and trying out stuff on my set reconfiguring everything working with equipment that was older than me and working and planning with my grandfather... It was super nice and I thank you for making these videos they help remind me of a better time in life a time I fear may never come again it gives me a glimpse of feeling of what things was like then and for that I thank you happy holidays

    Well slap me silly. lol This is the project you were working on when we were chatting on thursday EH? i remember you said something about foam and im like whats he up too. and here it is . very good. i think the bigboy being what it is is not ment to run into freight yards per say . 4014 back when they had it first running derailed because of the way the tracks made were not ready for such a big loco to come thru. i think what they did was have the loco disconnect from the manifest and then the road switchers and such would dismantle the train to put away in the yard while the mainline locos would get ready to hookup to another set . basically like the trucking industry. Good job. i would think you would need a double slip switch to be put in that yard area to switch the tracks where you wanted the cars to go. i love this

    @rayronvr Год назад +3

    such a nice addition. my only worry is the center point of the bridge. i think over time that solder could fail (or the rails can bend) so a heavy enough train could break the middle of the bridge. would recommend a brace piece of wood the width of the bridge-track underneath that connects to both tables to brace that center of the bridge.

    On the cars you are having issues with derailments, try adding some extra weight over the trucks. Those covered hoppers, especially if they are tyco or Bachmann, I set the weight at around 4 1/2 to 5 ounces and that usually fixes the problem. And also body mounting the couplers will help as well.

How I have mine deigned they can turn around. So they can go in head first and leave head first without me taking them off the track 180 and put them back on. You can get to the freight yard but trains are forced to only go in and out that one direction
    I would suggest change the track in such a way that a train can pull in, do the needed switching and then just continue forward to join back into the rest of the layout instead of needing to pull in to switch and then back out

      Building a wye creates electrical challenges so I want to avoid it. I might be able to make some changes but it would require moving the second curve nearby.

      If there is a loop in that entire mountain then I would suggest you pretty much run it straight out back to the curve you just fixed

    SMT - I have to also express my concern over the bridge. It appears that they are two Warren truss bridges, each intended for a short span. Bracing underneath is a good idea. If you have some model girders, you could run a girder horizontally between the horizontal top girder on each bridge section.

    • @SMTMainline
      @SMTMainline  Год назад +1

      I should have mentioned in the video that those bridges are braced by a long piece of wood and are more decorative than structural.

      @@SMTMainline - That sounds like a good design SMT! Prototypically such a bridge would have a horizontal beam or girder running the entire span - like your other Warren truss bridge across the ravine. The bridges, as they are, would have a pier in the middle supporting the 2 spans. If you have an extra 2 by 4 board, you could paint it a concrete color and stand it on 1 end for a pier between the 2 spans.

    what would be super cool would be to leave sections of weathered and abandoned track and old ballast where the track was removed.

    Your SOUTHERN PACIFIC DD35A you have it right, It went over good bot that Bridge could be better if your train derail right there it well hit the floor, put a guard rail there also, we need you at are club you are so good at fixing things you should join them.

      The guard rail will absolutely be added to prevent that from happening.

    To me, I think u might need a bigger bridge, not too big but big enough to have enough space for other big engines.

      Likely so, something that can fit the big boy.

    I think that other route should go into either a stub end area or another new section for later…
    How did you hold the bridge together? I was a bit worried with the DD35A running through it, and especially the BB
    I friggin love how all this is coming together as well!
    Thanks for the video

      The bridge is enforced with a long piece of wood so it doesn't really support the weight of the locomotives.

      I was more worried about the DD35 because it weighs about twice as much as the riviossi bigboy. Trust me, I have a DD35 6 dd40 and 5 of the old riviossi bigboys.

    How do you keep the stationary enginee from moving when power is applied? Is it isolated sections of track?

    Im not trying to be a troll (abd I probably sound like your grandpa) but now that you are a famous and respected member of the RUclips community it might be time to do a little cleanup in the basement 😂😂. The layouts great but the room is looking just a bit messy. Maybe a video of you and a few of your friends straightening up would be entertaining. Keep up the good work.
