Apparently one of the biggest obstacles in developing these things is not so much the design, but ensuring you're not infringing on someone else's patent of which there are millions. Great video.
@@lordhaywoodd No, but the really quiet ones have wear parts inside and are only quiet for a few shots. They use wipes, either instead of or between the baffles. They are basically discs made of rubber or some similar synthetic material like EPDM maybe. They are also made for short distances since the 1st shot punches a hole through the wipes and moves the POI around as the wipes wear. So pretty much point blank range or not much further than a few 10’s of yards. If you need to put several mags through the can you need a different design entirely. Especially if accuracy is required at any sort of common rifle engagement distance. Mono-core and baffle type designs have looser bore tolerances to avoid baffle strikes and multi-caliber interchangeability within specified effective cal. range of the can making them naturally louder in most cases. Can size is also a trade off. Bigger diameter and longer with tighter toleranced bore is quieter but at some point size becomes impractical, blocking iron sights or just adding too much weight to the front making the firearm awkward to balance and shoot, not to mention maneuvering it. Hope that helps.
That's what I love about suppressor design, there really are no limits to ideas, configurations, and ways to "make it work". If you've got the time, tools, and skills you can get a Form 1 approved and come up with your artistic solution to the problem. Engineering Wild West Style.
thanks for the education, and i really appreciate the fact that you had no music! its professional. but reading the comments seems educational to! i never knew their was so much involved! i was of the opinion that silencers really did not work! i spoke to makers but these were the old days when it was packed with cork and the first shot was good but it didn't last very long and at the end of the clip it was time to reload the silencer.
Then there is getting caught without having all the paperwork and stupid $200.00 tax stamp and getting 3 hot's and a cot for 10-20 years, that will really save your hearing.
This should work: Fast and effective baffles for a silencer may be created from a relative stiff 1 ½ wide flat strip of spring steel. 1. The strip of spring steal is folded back and forth to create an accordion. 2. On a grinder, the compresses metal accordion is perfectly rounded along two edges. 3. On a drill, once the two edges are rounded, a hole larger than the caliber to be used is drilled in the middle of the compressed accordion. 4. The accordion is now pulled and inserted in an aluminum tube. It must fit smugly as if paper dolls. The tube has a cap with an exit hole in one end and a barrel attachment at the other end. 5. When a bullet is fired through the center the accordion acts as baffles. The gas is delayed and compresses the coil taking up further energy. The corrugated steel accordion behaves as a spring inside the tube.
An army buddy in the 1990s said he heard cia guys bragging that they would jam a pencil through a beer can , stuff if full of steel wool, push the pencil part sticking out into the barrel to hold it for the shot. Since then i look twice at dudes with pencils in their pockets.
Just think that it started with staggered washers and spacers in a black pipe. Now it’s cones or a mono core. There were even some made from the big Maglite aluminum flashlights.
It’s not that hard to make a suppressor. What’s hard and expensive is making one that is does the job and is very light weight and compact. Heavy suppressors hanging off the end of handguns are not desirable.
I have a question regarding the "silencers"/suppressors at 7:14. I found a site that has the same type of suppressors but are listed as filters. Did you have to do any after market modification to those to make them "suppressors"? Im asking cause I found them to be SUPER cheaper than an ACTUAL suppressor. Was just wonder. Would appreciate a prompt response. Thank you.
I wanted to see how these worked sol l watched ananimation. This one answered the questionabout how they are made. About half the way through, l wondered about cleanig some of these gadgets, especially the ones with cast bodies.
No Copper is a soft metal and could explode if used. The gasses coming out of the barrel are moving fast and could cause an explosion in the copper tube similar to a bomb.. SO NO DO NOT TRY AND MAKE ONE. Its cheaper to buy one then pay for the medical bills.
1:17 I live almost walking distance from AAC's original location in Norcross, Georgia. They made the suppressor that killed Osama bin Laden, if I recall.
I'm stunned by the fact, how much of thinking are people (inclunding myself) able to put into such a thing that serves only one purpose. Are we totally fucked in the head?
Okay, here it is, the Holy Grail of design ideas...wait for it....Tesla Valve! I see some designs where they are sorta' using the design, changed it as to not infringe on patents? Keep the can from exploding?
They are if you use subsonic ammo. A suppressor only quiets, or suppresses, the sound generated by the round being fired, or the "explosion" if you will, of the gun powder being ignited and propelling the bullet out of the gun barrel. What cannot be suppressed is the sonic "boom" or "crack" of the bullet breaking the sound barrier...it's called physics and cannot be mitigated unless subsonic ammunition is used and bullet velocity is kept under 1,125 fps.
I see a bunch of info that's all mostly right, in part... but not. And/or not complete. There are always those that will tell you they can build a suppressor that will let their .45 "whisper in your ear." Here is some info that I hope helps the uninitiated and "busts some bullshit." A) It is a sound suppressor. The term "Silencer" originated as a brand name some time ago but they are both now equally accepted terms. Like all Kleenex is facial tissue but not all facial tissue is Kleenex. No suppressor is truly silent but with a subsonic load in a .22 and effective "can" baffles, they get darned close. But quiet is relative... Put up a decibel meter and the report (the actual sound) of a suppressed weapon still registers higher than you would think. The little "hissing" sound often portrayed in movies is unrealistic and, if you fire a suppressed weapon in a crowd, someone will hear it. Particularly since there are a LOT of suppressed 9mms used in movies and they just aren't "whisper" quiet. B) Suppressors are designed to effectively reduce perceived decibel levels below the dangerou mark and protect the shooter and anyone in close proximity. Yes, subsonic ammo eliminates the sonic "boom" of the projectile but there is still an explosion. Yes, as I stated, a few suppressed .22s can be pretty darned quiet but, even then, you will hear three sounds. The sound of the powder burning (exploding), the sound of the projectile (even subsonic) and gasses exiting the muzzle and the sound of the bolt cycling. These add up to more than a whisper. The type of suppressor matters, as well. If the baffles are fixed or removable or if it is a mono-core, etc. Are they simple, cupped baffles or are there fluid dinamics engineered into the device? The variables are too many to make a blanket statement as to the effective drop in decibels. Elevation, humidity/air density, ambient air temp, the projectile velocity and type of powder used are all variables which come into play. "Silent" is zero decibels. That ain't happening. Under 90bd is a very effective unit, with 85 a realisticly satisfactory expectancy. 65-75db is someone talking next to you and getting below that is REALLY hard to do and next to impossible in larger than .22 cal. and even then it's hard. A suppressed weapon will still usually be hard a half mile out in ideal conditions (nothing in the sound path exceeding the decibel output of the weapon in question). Any ambient noises present will act as "nullifiers," rather like noise cancelling headphones, so the report might not make it that half mile to a mile like it was a quiet day in the meadow but the report at or near the muzzle will still be, in fact, quite noticeable. Most microphones used making RUclips videos have an auto-leveling function and what you hear usually isn't a true representation and may be softer or louder on a any given Sunday. Don't let someone in a video say "See how quiet?" or "It's really a lot quieter than it sounds..." because you just can't tell. The point is to be reasonable with your expectations. If you plan on being a movie quality hit man, make a different plan. What a suppressor/silencer WILL do is to create confusion in a crowd because it is the echoes after the shot that allow human hearing to identify direction and distance... And that often only comes after a second shot. So, although you will be heard, it may be difficult for anyone not standing right next to you to be able to determine just exactly from where the shot originated. The problem is... There's always someone standing right next to you. ;) These devices were designed to allow sportsman to enjoy shooting during their entertainment at garden parties without simultaneously pis sing off the wives and chide and almost instantly caught on as hunting aids since they don't scare the game or make you deaf taking target practice. Most people call them "suppressors" because "silencer" is a misnomer. They suppress the sound, they don't silence it.
I wish someone would test all these and tell use which is the top five or ten quietest.
It always depends on caliber
