Mavis Staples. You should look her up she's a very important civil rights activist who sang for Martin Luther King Jr. And a hoot to boot. She's my dream grandma.

"Who's grandma does he have in this video??" Really, Billy?!?! Lol That beautiful piece of living history is the GREAT Mavis Staples of The Staples Singers, creator of "I'll take you there", "Let's Do It Again" and "Respect Yourself" just to name a few lol. They toured with the Great Martin Luther King Jr. back in the day and opened up for him. She's a living legend my friend. There is a video of him and Mavis meeting up to talk about this project and he was so (understandably) in awe of her. You should check it out if you have a second. 🖤

Hozier is an Irish singer /songwriter... This song is an homage to political activists who have fought for different types of freedom... the original video for this song is made up of Irish activists listening to this song for the first time x

he name-checked some of the best known song writers who created the protest music of the civil rights era and beyond. mavis, with "the staple singers," is among those singers / composers. "nina" is nina simone. "billie" is billie holiday (sorry, lol). there was also "dylan" -- bob dylan -- "woody" -- woody guthrie -- "james brown" -- james brown, lol -- "joni," whom i guessing is joni mitchell -- and a half dozen other people. the name that's missing, imo, is sam, as in sam cooke, who wrote and sang "a change gonna come." other than that, it's a pretty perfect song.

Do yourself a favour and do a deeper dive on this, educate yourself on the meaning behind it and the artists called out, then give it another listen with all the info in mind. The song deserves to be understood, Mavis deserves more respect, and, frankly, you owe it to yourself to actually GET what you listened to.

Oh lord. A pasty white guy from County Wicklow in Ireland who lives in the forest knows more about the origins of black music legends than the dude watching the video.
Somehow this fits right in with the topic of the music. It's not about what category they put you in (or you claim for yourself), it's what you do with your life and your environment that creates change.
