We were all taught geography, but very few choose to remember it until someone is bombing someone. Those that believe different show their arrogance about the way they treat others. Kinda like so many US citizens who refuse to learn a language other then what they grew up with. While I appreciate that comedians often manage to bring about a sincere thoughtfulness to many bad actors, as of the past 10 to 20 years people been banning even comedians who tell the truths many are trying to suppress.

Seeing the video of the Russian armored vehicle purposefully running over the fleeing civilian vehicle, which is then followed by footage of Ukranians banding together to save the person who remains alive in the destroyed vehicle, it really brings into focus how utterly meaningless and senseless the "culture war" is in the grand scheme of things. These Ukranians may not have known each other before they went to save that person, but they risked life and limb during an active invasion to work together to save a life of a fellow Ukranian. Heck, the amount of compassion they show to the enemy is also astounding in the face of such naked aggression.
The Ukranian people have to worry about surviving until tomorrow in their own homes, and we still have people worried about perceived "wins" and "losses" in some insignificant "culture war." The people running the "sides" of that culture war - the two major political parties and the mainstream and social media companies who act as their mouthpieces - are the only winners in that war and strive to keep us separated to keep the fires of war burning. We need leaders more like Volodymyr Zelenskyy who are unifiers, builders and defenders rather than dividers, destroyers and belligerents.
My heart goes out to the people of Ukraine, and I hope you are all happy and safe in your homes very, very soon.

Whether the 'star' presenters' messaging is the chicken, or the innate opinions of their viewers are the egg is debatable. Fox couldn't modify or 'sanitise' the messaging, because the majority of viewers wouldn't accept that. The viewers have been indulged in their excesses by the company's agenda. It's a symbiotic relationship. Thankfully we don't have Fox News (or the even worse variants) in Europe. It was not commercially viable to provide Fox on cable to the very small number of interested customers here.

To respond to the “brethren” segment, as a person from Bosnia, I have some experience in this regard. As Bosnians, we were attacked by Serbia and certain people identifying as Serbian based on their religion who actually were born and raised in Bosnia. I am a Bosnian muslim (the current ethnic denomination is Bosniak), who grew up alongside people of all religions (Roman Catholic, Serbian orthodox, Jewish) and we all considered ourselves Bosnians. We basically speak the same languages (Bosnians and Serbians understand each other perfectly) and our mentality and demeanor are very similar. When I meet Serbians abroad it is as if I met a long lost cousin. However, at a certain point, there was a strong propaganda effort by Serbia to turn neighbors against neighbors. People who lived in Serbia did not believe there was war or war crimes in Bosnia, Bosniaks were dehumanized and demonized (“they are throwing Serbian children to lions in the zoo”) and that made war possible. Everything that is happening today in Ukraine and Russia, we have experienced first hand in Bosnia in the nineties.

If You are a comedian - 1st, that means You are emotionally and cognitively intelligent, talented. Stupid can not be comedian, so that is a good test, that You can perform in front of people without any risk to be ridiculous in a bad way, that you are sharp enough to not be easily distracted, ridiculed, provoked.

I usually expect a reasonable opinion from jon, but he's way off in this one. I guess that's the kind of brain rot living in the middle of the empire and watching their propaganda does to you, even the best ones. Putin didn't just decide to invade ukraine out of the blue, they've been negotiating for 8 years, specially about the donbass region, but after the 2014 coup that took neonazis to power in ukraine there's little logic and a whole lot of of chauvinism in that country politics. Putin has repeatedly said that ukraine joining nato was a red flag for russian security, and ukraine representatives, specially zelensky, kept pushing it. He even suggested they might pursue nuclear weapons again. Putin is no saint, of course, he's ruthless in many ways and also does what will benefit russian oligarchs most often than not, in spite of their own people if need be, but there are geopolitical interests that just can't be ignored. just imagine for a moment if russia decided to put a whole lot of weapons in mexico while repeatedly claiming the USA is threat to the world (and it actually is, you've been at war with most of the world by now, and the only country to use nuclear weapons against civilians). This war could've been avoided if the USA and its puppets (specially NATO) stopped acting like the world police and trying to talk with other countries reasonably for once, and not like everyone should automatically obey them. And, just to finish, zelensky is a clown, he gave a nice speech, but that also kept provoking russia, while letting the neonazi in his country run free, and bombarding the donbass region.

I'm sorry, I know this is super wordy and long, but I have several Ukrainian friends who I have been keeping in contact with, and I want to correct the record on the idea that support for Ukraine divides neatly along party lines. The Ukrainian people are worth fighting for, they are BEGGING for our help, and this can be a uniting moment for our country to step up. I'm a conservative, and let me say, Jon has to stop watching Fox News and thinking they speak for all, or even most, conservatives. I agree with Tucker and Laura on some things, but adamantly disagree on a lot of others, which is why I stopped watching Fox News myself. Don't let this be steered by politics, this is not partisan, it's about right and wrong. A lot of people, conservatives in particular, have been conditioned over the last 2 years to doubt everything the government and the media says. I have Ukrainian friends in Kyiv I have been trying to keep in regular contact with. I am not at all surprised by their fighting spirit and will. They are on average the finest, most polite people I've ever met, and I worked with a dozen different nationalities in Alaska. Putin thinks the world will back down, that his threat of force is enough to scare us into inaction. This is the most worthwhile fight of our generation, the Ukrainian people are the most deserving of our support, and our SACRIFICE, that we will ever find. This will be a defining moment. The US will suffer no matter what, so we can either suffer while standing by and allowing Ukraine to be destroyed by Putin, or we can choose the righteous path and confront the bully head on. Please excuse my wordy reply, but I thought this was important to say. Jon is not saying that all conservatives are represented by Fox. He's attacking Fox and the bile they spew, and looking at that situation with sorrow. He's not attacking those who identify as Republican or saying they don't care, he's talking about the average Fox News host - & they are two very different groups of people.
Despite being left-leaning, Jon Stewart has always fought for what he thinks is fair - fighting for justice for 9/11 first responders and the victims of military burn pits, many of whom are Republican. So his issue isn't with Republicans, he's been fighting for them, it's with this insane and constantly angry vitriol, masquerading as "neo conservatism" (but, in reality, is an addiction to conspiracy theories and anything anti-government) that Fox has come to embody over the past few years.
You seem to be in the "traditional Republican" camp, based on your comments and logic, so I'm sure that he wasn't referring to you in any way. He was attacking how the Fox presenters get so caught up in culture wars, getting so angry over people saying "happy holidays", but support Putin when he is killing innocent children in Ukraine. It's not a "left vs right" thing, it's a "right vs wrong" thing.
That's the way I understood him, anyway.

    • @t-and-p
      @t-and-p 2 года назад

@Steve En It might be easier to look at things they've said that *couldn't* be described as "spewing bile". Hosts like Jennifer Griffin and Chris Wallace (before he left) have some journalistic integrity, but hosts like Laura Ingraham and Tucker Carlson spout hate-filled nonsense with absolutely no basis (aka bile).
For example, Fox News were taken to court for Tucker Carlson's horrific falsehoods about immigrants and his own lawyers (rather than defend him by saying he was speaking the truth) declared he was an "entertainment show" and "not to be taken seriously", so therefore could not be held to journalistic standards such as evidence-based reporting or bias. This is a host on a *news* network. Not a comedy network, a news network, where people are tuning in to find out what's going on in the world and should be able to expect a level of professionalism and factual reporting.
How can you be held to lesser standards than a TV drama and still sell yourself as "news"? The fact that they had no defence, legal or otherwise, for their outright lies means that it's legitimate to refer to their output as spewed bile.

I saw that video of the father and daughter. It was so upsetting - I went into my office and sat down, stared for a bit, and started violently sobbing in a way I haven’t in years. This kind of thing should not be happening ever, but especially in a time where, if our leaders chose, could be a peaceful time for all. Your average person just wants to live and have a life with their family (whatever that may be for them) for the short time they have on this earth.
And some rich psychotic fucker can just decide you can’t even have that. It’s just so wrong.

You perfectly told my own personal point on this war. I feel exactly like you do, 100%. I had a terrible day keeping myself informed about what's going on, tweeted some heartfelt message, as an European Citizen to invite the European parliament to do what it was supposed to be done 20 years ago when our currency started, creating a finally unitarian Foreign Affairs and Defence institution to have one word, one voice and also about the creation of an United European Forces, which in my opinion should have been created at least together with the economics because, especially during Cold War even the very understandable need of peace needed a force to defend itself.
I've seen images i didn't wish to see, shed so many tears I cannot even count... all in a sudden while trying hard to still work.
I watched Stephen Colbert's monologues he had in his Late Show these days and it's been a moment of relief and laughter as well {the voice impression of Putin with the image of Putin mixed with Trump's hair was so spot on and so hilarious indeed!} but, as soon as the videos were over I started to go blue again and started crying all over again.
I feel exactly like you do, thinking about how we live in a era in which we are lucky enough we could live in real peace, with everybody having the chance of living a better life.., all we want to achieve is happiness... and yet here we are, facing a crazy man after another and another and another! All this won't end well, it won't end well at all. I feel something much worse is coming!

@@davidedemurodominijanni9889 I just want to send you a hug if that's okay. I understand just having this take over one's mind. :( Last week was an all time low for me mentally. It's truly an awful thing Ukranians are living through and an awful thing to watch and have limited control over. Knowing families are getting torn apart and people are dying over nothing -and feeling powerless to do anything - it's really hard. It feels like if it takes 1 person to mess things up so bad, why does it take so many people to try to fix it. I guess cause destruction is always easier than creation.
My therapist ended up telling me to limit how much news I take in daily, as I was tracking news all day every day and it was worsening my depression. I am still tracking, because I told her "if other people have to live through this, the least I can do it be informed" but I try to be measured about when I do. I don't have spare money to donate and feel bad that I can't do much besides voice support.
But she also pointed out, that taking care of health now means you can help people later (I am a student but am struggling with health right now).
I guess all this rambling typing to say, try your best to take care of yourself if this is taking over your mood too much. Being constantly depressed (like I was/am) won't make the situation better or change anything there. And just as much as they need compassion and help in Ukraine, there'll be someone or something down the line that'll eventually require our passion where we are. She told me my (and therefore, our) job is to do what we can while taking care of our health, so we can be there in the future when someone will need our help.

It would be like people setting up tents right outside of your property, brandishing their arsenal of guns while claiming "peaceful" intentions. Like you wouldn't start to get a little tense with that happening to you, right? Like you wouldn't be in the right if you took out your shotgun, walked to the edge of your property and said to these folks, "If you keep coming closer, there will be consequences". It would be like Russia setting up military bases at the Canadian-US and Mexico-US borders. You think we would allow that to happen? The Russians are not stupid and they have tried diplomacy for years now, and clearly that has failed. These expansions towards their borders, btw, are in direct violation of former agreements between the US/west and Russia.

I am a American artist living in France. For the past 8 months I have been working remotely on a Holocaust memorial project for Babyn Yar with a Ukrainian company based in Kyiv. Right now all I hear is Putin going on and on about how he had to invade Ukraine to get rid of nazis. Every country has it's own internal struggles, but the people I work with daily are an active part of fighting against nazi and fascist ideologies through art and cultural enrichment. Right now all of that is being trampled and blood is being shed by the true fascistic force coming to conquer a sovereign nation. It's so blatantly criminal even the Russian people are protesting this atrocity.
I feel helpless right now as I check the news every 5 minutes. We need to mount pressure with our voices so our governments do something to stop this insanity. War is never the right answer, it can only bring death and destruction. Good people like my coworkers Maksym and Olesia are suffering for it right now.

And this is what the United States and NATO are most afraid of. The President of France was right when he said in 2019 that we (Europe) should look to the side of Russia, not the US, because the US will leave us as quickly as they want, but Russia is our neighbor and we must live and work with them forever.
