For a minute it almost feels like the audience isn’t there and these two are having a straight up honest conversation about the way things might be in the world. That is authenticity at its finest.

Was traveling with my hockey team in high school when we stopped at a diner for lunch. Jon Stewart happened to be there. Super nice, down to earth, regular dude. Made everyone laugh, and was genuinely interested in how our team fared in our game. By the time we finished our lunch, he had already said goodbyes & wished us all luck. He picked up our teams bill without our coaches or chaperones having a clue. Nice dude.

I have always known that Jon Stewart had a big heart based on how he supported and fought for the first responders of 9/11. However, this interview opened my eyes on how truly awesome of a human being Jon Stewart truly is. I have never heard anyone discuss this delicate issue the way he did with humor, intelligence, calm, and empathy. You are simply amazing, Jon Stewart. You are a class act! Is a reason the best political show for years was on a comedy channel.
The impressive part was he disarmed Colbert and derailed his "this is dangerous" before he ever got to bring it up. While not everyone is as good as conversations as Jon, we have allowed the names to be wailed as clubs to prevent discussion on many topics.
The daily show with him was ……. Just consistently such a salve. Game changing is putting it mildly.
John Stewart is a g. He has always kept it real. He is a genius. He showed the difference in who can talk. He joked. And he knew what he was doing. I love that he stated that he doesn’t necessarily agree with everything but agrees that a person should not be penalized for their opinion.

His new show is amazing. It doesn’t have quite the same cultural reach as TDS, but goddamn, I just yesterday watched him interview Hillary Clinton and Condoleeza Rice for 45 minutes, for free, on RUclips. He’s doing his best work now.

The tension is because Stephen likely disagrees with this idea that we should let bigots and disinformants and hate-mongers have as much platform as they want for the sake of “debate.” And Stephen is right. And Jon is wrong. Responsibility exists in the world, and no one is obligated to platform violent and terrible ideas for the sake of “fairness.” Basic values have to exist, and one of our values is that ALL people have a right to security and dignity. Which means that a neo-fascist does not have a “right” to a microphone if they are going to use that “right” to implicitly or directly attack the rights of others.

While the IDEAL of open dialogue is noble, the REALITY of platforming disinfo and fascism is that society regresses and destabilizes, democratic guarantees are weakened, and people die. It’s not a philosophical issue, it’s a security issue.

the shows are actually much longer in real life. they edit them down for TV. this was a serious discussion so not much reason for people to laugh nonstop
Hate to break it to you, but I was there in January and the reactions from the public is 100% fake. So much so that I can't watch the show anymore because it was SO unbelievable weird and fake.

I believe wholeheartedly that the Twitter mob is well out of hand, but this is entirely different. I think much more harm than good comes from allowing racist nonsense, especially from influential celebrities, to proliferate on social media. Kanye posted antisemitic in the months leading up to the "deathcon 3 on Jewish people" idiocy. I don't recall any "useful conversations" stemming from those earlier tweets being allowed to "air out". And how would those conversations go exactly? Can you even imagine a large-scale civil, productive conversation around racism occurring on Twitter? Oh yeah, I can see it now, a slew of antisemites tweeting back how this conversation has really turned them around. Stewart's take strikes me as foolishly Pollyannaish, especially when you consider that antisemitism is currently on the rise worldwide and people are suffering because of it.

One of the best interviews I have seen Colbert give. Instead of trying to be clever and funny, Steven mostly played the straight man, allowing Jon Stewart to display his masterful ability at discussing a very difficult subject interspersed with comedy, long pauses and facial expressions that had me roaring! I'm about to relisten to this with my morning coffee. You two are brilliant!
Colbert was pretty much silent. He was not at the level of depth that Jon was. I think it was a terrible interview by Colbert. It was a fantastic monologue by Stewart.
yeah Stephen always lets the truly insightful ones talk freely without any speed pressures or random jokes. But it takes time to know someone on that level, and they go with their speed routine as a default with most their guests. One of the reasons why he at times interrupts the guest or only takes a one or two line answer to the questions instead of further explanation is to speed up the segment so as to get more things to talk about. But many people don't see Stephen from this perspective, they find it rude and such.
@@Happyllama220 Colbert was funny back in the day and I actually rather liked the Colbert Report. That being said, I'm glad he let Stewart do his thing.
If you carefully watch the clip again, Stephen actually presses Jon to give an answer even after long non-answers until Jon finally answers him. Jon even realizes this means there's disagreement.
As pointed out at the end by stephen himself... he can't reveal his personal feelings about the issue because it's too dangerous and may get him canceled.
I come from a neighborhood where many of the fathers, uncles, brothers, etc were first responders who were at ground zero. We lost a few on that day, we’ve lost many to illness in the following years. Out of everyone, John Stewart was the guy who actually got it done. Thank you John, you were true to your word

I’m a Jew. 3 out of 4 of my grandparents are Holocaust survivors and I 100% agree with everything Jon Stewart said. He’s completely right that canceling people’s speech or controversial opinions is the wrong way to handle a difference of opinion… it only makes the problem worse

Wokeism is a social/cultural movement, not an economic one, that many lefties don't agree with. Wokeism just happens to be bundled together with "left-leaning ideas" in this point in time through a reductionist non-nuanced narrative peddled by the mainstream.

I agree, Jon is firmly on the left and while Id argue the term "lefty" in '22 implies far left social politics, it is probably pointless to get in vocabulary debate. My original point is that most lefties do THINK like Jon. We are just not as represented in social and traditional media because the incentives (attention/conflict=money) favors people and ideas that are extreme, simple, lack any nuance and provoke emotion. Even if you do think like Jon, you are deincentivized to talk this way because of potential backlash and harassment from the other extremist viewpoints. The issue is the medium and political system not the voters themselves.
These two together are always so enjoyable to see. Funny, but also thought provoking and informative.
so watching this, and I have watched this several times since it came out, I am... AMAZED at how cool Jon Stewart is given what happened and how it has effected him personally (well professionally personally, because reality is that his profession has been in the crosshairs). His professionalism is second to none.
I love how quiet the room gets when Jon is speaking. Once he gets into the real conversation, there's no cheering and very little audience noise, only a slightly muted chuckle. When Jon Stewart speaks, people listen.
I do agree, but that's because he needs long silent pauses to process his thoughts.
Jon already has made the jump into changing political tides. When he shares his insights it's so to the bone honest, it's hard to contest it.

This is probably one of the best statements Jon Stewart has made about any situation in a while. This is the shit I used to live for back when he was doing The Daily Show. He was always funny, but every once in a while he would say something insightful that perfectly encapsulated the way I felt about a situation, and I just think he nailed it this time.
I think the anti-Semitisim and transphobia shuts down the conversation a heck of a lot more than the criticism of it.
@@arlom5132 Sure.... but labelling things in black and white by definition ignores reality for ones own convenience. To actually bring people to your side, you have to be willing to understand the nuances of their criticisms and statements, then correct the points where they went astray. I think the real problem lies in the fact that most people don't actually know how to reasonably defend their own positions on either side, because they are dictated by society, rather then determined and learned for ones self.
The more you push anything, no matter how evil it seems into a corner and forbid it, you've instantly given it credibility it never deserved. It's essentially the same as saying 'we don't have a legitimate answer to your question, so your no longer allowed to ask it.'

If people were actually doing what you just described it would be fine, but there's a complete lack of the follow up, the only thing that happens is the labelling and shaming. We don't explain to them why they got it wrong, we expel them from society and never let them back in.
Peoples interests don't seem to lay in understanding and reconciliation, it lies in demonizing the other side. It's what the right does on abortion and 'wokeness', and the left on stuff like this racism. When you demonize the other person, you don't have any intention of reaching an understanding hand out to convert them, you just want to punish them and move on. This doesn't end up solving anything at the end of the day, and just deepens peoples misguided beliefs.

Each of us has the opportunity to speak like Jon Stewart (though, in all likelihood, not as well), and to choose "not to bury the nasty stuff" away in some corner. Of course, in order to speak like Jon, one needs to be well informed and current regarding the pressing issues of the day, and this takes some attention to detail, and requires effort. Most of all, we need to be civil to those who disagree with us, so that we can hear them through, and judge what it is they say, and not who they are solely based on what they say. Kudos to Colbert and Stewart for raising the issues that are raised here.
Not Colbert's bag, hard to sell a shit movie or album off nuance and genuine discussion. We should all be thankful Stewart came back and is injecting maturity into The Late Show in small doses.

Jon Stewart has brilliant, sage-like thoughts. His IQ, EQ, SQ are through the roof, and he gets it because it's all about root causes. He's a visionary sorely needed in the world, and I'm so grateful for his commentary and sharp discernment along with his wit. Him quoting Kyrie on how "hurt people, hurt people" reminds again that people need to be addressed with dignity, love, respect and open curiosity to hear them out otherwise the wounds of alienation fester. Respect and honorable discussion are cause for real social transformation to diffuse conflict, otherwise it's an ego battle no one wins. Punishing people is never the way to go. G-d bless you Jon!

Jon has much more control over his show, that he created, and he's in a position to not have to worry about advertisers, or studio executives and censors, or whether or not one of his guests ever agrees to return after he eviscerates them on camera.
Steven, on the other hand, has an obligation to the legacy of the show's brand, the network, the studio, the advertisers, the writers, the guests, and all of the other people who make the show happen every night. The Late Show is a part of the state's tourism. Literally, hundreds of people's livelihoods depend on that show.

Is it not enough that Colbert gives Jon as much airtime as he possibly can, to talk about practically anything he wants, while promoting and supporting nearly every move he makes? He gives him network exposure to promote a show on a separate paid subscription network, all the time. He gives him a huge space to voice and share his message any time he wants. What is even more admirable is there were no hard cuts. A good speaker can keep your attention through their cadence, wit, intelligence, humor, and passion as it hugs every word they speak. When you, as a remote watcher, aren't looking at the runtime of the video, when you find yourself resting your face in your hands, hanging on to a speaker's every word and actually contemplating their thoughts and points... that's beautiful. Jon puts in a masterclass in public speaking every time he opens his mouth. He doesn't incite rage. He doesn't need to put down others or to pick a villain to make this words have power. He means what he says and he wants others to come along for the journey as he explains himself. He's a goddamn legend.

What I've noticed is these same people will hurl insults when debating online but are more level-headed and actually discuss the topics when having face-to-face discussions. Social media and the internet have fostered a culture of keyboard warriors and echo chambers. Talking with my politically divergent friends doesn't magically make us agree with each other. It reminds us that although the person we're debating may have a different set of values and priorities, they're still good people at the end of the day.

Here Jon used the word both for it's definition--to spread or grow--as well as to evoke a metaphor. That metaphor being: that misinformation is akin to cancer in it how dangerous it is.
I'm explaining this because I believe it's important to fully understand how loaded a word may be before using it. I think Jon is the type of comic who is quite purposeful in the words he chooses to use. Plus, using cancer as a metaphor is rather serious, and I think ought to be used sparingly, rather than "using [it] for days." -From a writer (who is 6 months in remission ;) )

I often imagine them doing a kind of retirement show together after their kids are grown and flown where they just discuss and debate and make each other crack up laughing over whatever they find to disagree about.

Just rewatching this, it hit me that despite this being watched by Millions, Jon's priority is still to check in with his friend; "I know you disagree with me on this". That's really grounded, and authentic, and just makes me love both of them all the more.
