- I failed to credit the brains behind the amazing Isengard Ents display. It was Ruth! She's been working on it for years and, I'm sure you'll agree, it was worth every moment. Incredible

For a long time, the Isengard Legendary Legion, Assault Upon Helms Deep, from Games Workshop's Warhammer Middle Earth Strategy Battle Game, was mega meta. Then it got the nerf bat. Is it still pretty meta?
To find out, we need someone incompetent to take it for a test drive.

This was an entertaining report I must say and it's good to hear a list like this is still viable. Started 'really' playing just over a year back and have started playing Isengard in our most recent battle companies campaign. Got a bunch of them painted up now (along with some cool conversions) and I happen to have two assault ballistae hidden in the old pile of shame. So now I might have to just paint them up and start a simular LL.

Great video, and always love the content!! However, have to tell you that you did Chris SUPER dirty in the Gulavhar fight; only the final ballista target, after resolving all ITWs, including the combat, takes the autokill. Warg rider was closest to the shot, so he'd be flung back, Gully and captain knocked prone and take a single S9 hit. Just so you know for next time :)

Well the only change was the ballista rerolls. So besides that, its still a solid LL. Your bomb in the 2nd game.. Where is the 2nd engineer to try denotating the bomb? You get 2 engineers and a beserker.
Killed sadly! It was all down to the last boi, and he let me down.
Vid is very well made love the edits and voice over, but I can really feel for your opponents If somebody gets lucky and starts to celebrate it to my face I might get a bit annoyed tbf

I have a question about the bomb. You rolled 1 d6 dice to see if the bomb would detonate after successfully passing courage. I thought it was 2 dice you rolled for this? And secondly once you know of its 1 or 2 dice for wounding i thought you just rolled once and everyone within range suffered that many wounds? Instead of rolling 2 d6 per model. Maybe ive been doing it wrong though. If so it's always good to learn. Thanks for any insight
Hey Jamie. You're certainly right about the first one! The second you may well be I don't have the rules in front of me. My first time using it so I'd trust your instinct!

I play the same legion but I am surprised by how you detonated the bomb with the ballista against the Rohan cav. Can you explain the sequence? The bomb is s7 and has 3 wounds. According the rules when it is wounded, you can roll a d6 for each wound and it will only detonate on a 6. I saw you made the courage test and not the wound rolls for detonation. Really like the reports you make!
Hey thanks!! There's a problem with the edit there sadly, and a slip of the tongue. The bomb detonated normally. The baliastas had nothing to do with it. I'm not sure why I said that haha

Happy to see some more content! I have a question, how are you auto killing Gulavar with the ballista when it only does one wound?
I run the Helms deep LL often, and you're right it does get samey, have a go with the shaman. Auto pass courage checks for the bomb, the 6+ fury save stacks with the 6+ bow save for the beserkers.
I know youve got your beserkers backed up with 2 pikes, are you 2 handing with the beserkers for +1 wound and then using the FV of the pikes? Just a question as ive seen some players miss that.
Hey man thanks very much. Great hint, I'll definately give it a go with the Shaman. I'm thinking of giving it a rest entirely for a bit and going back to my Rohan. I miss those guys.
As for the Ballista, unless I've missed something (I hope not) Gulavar is a battlefield target and so dies instantly to the ballista. he has no fate so is extremely vulnerable to it!

very nice report and event! :) just one quick question if I may: at 21:14 you shoot your ballista into 2 orks. Arent there two rows of your own urukhai in the way?(those directly in front of your ballistas) also, can sauron not just put 3 lines of orks between himself and the ballistas and be more or less good?
It has a minimum range of 6" so they were safe :)

Doesn't the ballista (from the point of the arrow) just have full vision of those orcs? I'm not sure I buy that minimum range means they can't be hit by an in the way. If it was that way you could do some absolutely weird stuff like putting your frontline 5 inch away from the ballista and then you could shoot the spear supports of your opponent away
@@muesliman100 but the reverse is that I could get around the restriction on targeting enemies within 6 by just targeting something further away and aiming for an in the way.
It certainly isn't clear from the FAQ, and I do take your point. But that's how I've played it in three tournaments and never had a player or TO disagree.
This game is so difficult hahaha, when moments like that bomb detonation happened against theoden and gamling you cant be too excited. But on the other hand, you cant stay calm as it is so fulfilling to kill them both and do 2d6 wounds when detonated😂😂
So does the ballistae auto kill when it causes a wound?
It does! Unless the target has 10 wounds or is a "siege target" (which are listed in the rulebook). Hope that helps

@@craig3111 yes it can! Sadly for Gulavhar, he didn't have any fate. It's why it is such a weakness for him
which size are the boards at the events?
I don’t think everybody in the combat gets insta killed? You roll to see who gets hit within the combat (like regular bow fire) and then that model is insta killed I think
Thanks for commenting. If you have a look at the rules it says that everyone takes the hit. Only one gets flung which you roll for.
@@BattleCamperHome sorry that’s right, I mean the insta kill. The rest in the combat get the S9 hit without killing them outright. IE, if 4 models are in a combat, 1 gets the S9 hit and auto kill (if not saved by fate) then the other 3 get a normal S9 hit
@@David_Jackson39 Thanks. Can you let me know where you're seeing that? The rules say everyone is hit and anyone hit is killed if not saved by fate. It's been the way I've played it at a number of events without issue, so would be interested to know if theres an FAQ or something that says otherwise

i think the ballistas are still OP. i would HATE to fight against them.. ofc different army's have different tactics but sit and shoot is quite boring and "dick" move. But if thats the armys strength what u can do... the assault on helms deep without ballistas i imagen is quite hard to play in competitive games i mean if you would t have them against Angmar. the games would been veeeery veery difficult 4 you . But good video anyway
Agree with all of this to be honest. They don't look fun to fight. They have weaknesses, and I think I was very lucky with my match ups, but them losing 1/3 of their models before the lines meet must be very frustrating.

not sure how familiar your opponent was with using sauron. the dude is just about the worst model in the game to shoot with a ballista. (4 to hit, 5 to wound, could scatter away, doesnt get flung. and at absolute almost impossible worst you need to do this three times to kill him) dark lord could have popped out, grabbed the prize, and him plus wraith magic the bomb crew as he stomped towards your board side barging all the way. not a lot your list could do at that point.
That's me! And can confirm, thoroughly unfamiliar with using Sauron 😂 I guess my biggest fear was the auto-broken army once he loses half his wounds, which one ballista shot would do. Then again, with scatters etc, I suppose I should have risked it, but it was quite entertaining watching the mighty lord Sauron hiding behind a rock 😂 it was a great game though, and had a lot of fun with Sauron over the weekend!
@@freeky891 thanks for replying. the army bonus isn't worded great, but you dont actually auto-break until sauron dies. at 1-2 wounds left the army "breaks as normal" so it follows the standard rules and breaks at 50% models dead. at 3+ wounds you cant break. so as long as you keep your numbers above 50% sauron can get beaten up as much as you want and the army doesn't break so long as he's even a little bit alive😆 if you want to be exceptionally villainous (not recommended apart from grudge matches and max-sweat tournaments) ignore saurons huge warband. if you have a three model army they cant quarter you without killing sauron as well. lets you grind any game right to the time limits. and you can build surprisingly efficient lists for brad dur even at tiny numbers. this was 800 pts, so you could run sauron witchking and second wraith on two fellbeasts with max stats, crown and blade for 795. triple monster triple caster two flyers all with might and fate and really high courage. cant break unless sauron or both wraiths die, cant 25% without all of them killed.
