It does seem like the younger hobbyists aren't interested in metal, too many horror stories from a lot of us that started with it I think lol. I love painting metal models though, they just feel different than modern plastic.
I painted a lot of metal D&D models before I started on Citadel miniatures. To this day my favourites from the metal era are my Grey Knights, Inquistitor double blister pack and my Terminator box set. I look at the painting on the models and think, yeah I could do better now, but the fun I had painting them is second to none. I was always a painter rather than a wargamer, so if like me you like to do the best paint job you can, then try some of these older models, and have fun!
Metal models are still around. Multiple games companies, including GW still make metal minis. The best minis on the market are made by Corvus Belli. Amazing sculpts, nearly everything they make is white metal.

The purchase was largely inspired by your channel as I didn't buy the models, per se, I bought a project to work on, and eventually try to field on the tabletop. I'm almost 1/3 of the way through the nearly 50 models in the army, and it's been the best experience in my limited hobby experience!

I have a large box of these in various states of paint and repair. I recently started stripping them to take the glooped on paint and then repaint them. This is so much fun. BTW, in the "pre-metalic paint era" we used knittnig needles to flatten and shine the metal surface smooth and make it reflective. I have been using this techniquie to make some 90's era grey knitghts
I'lll have to try the knitting needle thing, that sounds fascinating! When I started I only bought a few paints and a metallic was not one of them, so I just left swords unpainted until I ended up getting some.

Much appreciated :) things are still going strong! This week I had to push it out by a day though because the hello fresh spot, they don’t do Sunday videos, Idono why, but at least it’s only a day later.
There were plenty of metallic paints back then (I was there!) Maybe not so many variations, but still a bunch to choose from and inks in place of glazes and washes etc.
I know there was, but even when I started I didn't have metallic paint for a good while. I remember leaving paint off of swords to get the silver. The inks I remember pretty well, but even those I had no idea how to use lol.
Back in 2nd edition there wasn't a great deal of selection for metallic colours. However if you went outside of the hobby to scale aircraft then there were a lot more options. But most people back then would have been sticking to the gw paints for the most part as they were the easiest to obtain, at least in the UK. Might well have been a bit different across the pond for all I know.

Missile boy looks great - nostalgia aside (and there's a lot of nostalgia) I feel it's really fascinating to be able to collect the various eras of miniatures and see how the same troop type has been redesigned and reinterpreted over the years (I'm trying not to say 'decades', just so I don't feel too old). I find the modern plastics very lively and characterful personally, but it's a great bonus to be able to have their 'ancestors' lined up alongside them; I recently managed to get an affordable (more or less) deal on ebay for a 1988 daemonette, completing the set of original, 1994 giant claws, Juan Diaz, and the current plastics in my daemonette horde (and being chaos, having all those different designs mingling is a feature, not a bug, they're supposed to be chaotic).

Yes, you can order the old SM minis off ebay, or, what I did last week, go to your parents house and retrieve your Chaplain from 2000. Going to Re-Do this single miniature to my "now standard". :)
I'm fairly new to the modeling side of Warhammer. I do like the older metal models, especially the Chaos Terminators and grab them whenever I see one for a decent price.
@@eBayMiniatureRescues I've got a good dozen so far lol. I also loaded up on the metal Chaos Sorcerers that were made to order from GW not too long ago. I agree that they have more personality. The older tanks and Rhinos are cooler also I think.
Hey man, love the video thanks for sharing! Wanted to just mention a tip that you have a lot of background audio fuzz in your VO so it would probably help to use some available easy tricks to remove it and make things sound cripsy. You can search like, Remove Background Audio or Hiss and there's lots of vids on RUclips to show how :)
those devastator models are among my favourites. If you want to scare someone with a metal model, get them to build a techmarine backpack. That was awful to get glued together!
This is like pure nostalgia for me. Although, generally Space Marine models were cooler than todays versions, Imperial Guard models were even cooler. Also, if you can find them, squats are awesome
Committing the cardinal sin and commenting before watching the whole entire video, but yes!!! But I am biased as I'm restoring about 90 of them right now...
I don't think it is just nostalgia. I was not into WH40k in my younger days, and just started getting into it a couple years ago. The older space Marines are way more pleasing to what I am into than the new ones.
wow the blasphemy of making a blood angel (it looks like what the OG painter was going for ) into a Ultrasmurf ! lol awesome job . I still have many many of these mini's and their tactical marine counterparts they are some of my fave mini's though I did upgrade most to at least have 3rd ed Marine arms .
lol I know, I almost went with the original Blood Angel thing they had going on, but that blue, yellow, and red color scheme has been calling me for a while! I don't even have an Ultramarine army...
That one ended up pretty cool, with lots of character. :) There is plenty of worth in older Space Marines and other ancient miniatures, even with the scale creep in mind. For instance, old tiny Space Marines could just as well be used for non-enhanced futuristic soldiers in a different game. I also see potential in lengthening the limbs of some old Warhammer Fantasy and 40K figures that are 25mm in size.
I'm actually planning to take a 3d model of a Primaris Marine and scale it down to match classic Marines. The scale creep is just so ridiculous, and I hate Primaris Marines anyways so the sacrilege of it brings me joy. I love metal models. They feel like something important. And they aren't upended the moment they are placed on a texture because they actually have mass. Plastic is nice for converting, but it's making us lazy. Instead of doing everything we could to make unique models, we just take whatever GW is giving us and then complain about how they all look the same or are impossibly difficult to assemble (does a single Battle Sister leg really need to be in three pieces?).
@@eBayMiniatureRescues I guess you can’t argue with that! I just drop minis into the solution and let them sit until I get to them(sometimes years later, haha) and they usually come clean quite easily, including glue
Great video! Ive had in mind buying a ultrasonic cleaner for a few months, but i really don't know what should i use... What did you use? Ive got a few landraiders and a knight who would really like a bath 😅
I use a 3 liter sonic cleaner with a variable temperature and timer setting. Amazon has a bunch of different kinds, I picked up one that I don’t think is being made anymore, but there are plenty that are still out there. The 3 liter model fits tanks really well which is why I ended up with that size. Knights are a little tougher but I’ve done a few and they still fit with the panels off. Definitely worth getting if you plan on stripping a lot of minis :)
Hey there really like you shows keep it going :) I would like to know how high is the temp when your cleaning plastic models I have some old roguetrader and don't want to melt them Dan
Thanks!! I never let my sonic cleaner go above 55*C, and that's pretty hot. Even then, I've never had any issues with melting plastic or resin before. Resin can get a little bendy at higher temps, which is usually a good thing because I can bend pieces and cool them back into their proper shape, but that's about it. It would take some serious heat to melt the polystyrene plastic that GW makes their models out of so I wouldn't worry about it too much in the sonic cleaner. Hope that helps!
as a vintage hobby enthusiast, this is probably the worst possible time in history to be interested in 2nd edition marines. everything had skyrocketed in price over the pandemic, but only just recently did old marines actually jump up in price aswell
Hey mate. I’ve just found your channel and been binging it. I’ve got a few questions, I’ve got about 5k point space wolf army from the 90’s. I’ve recently had a resurgence in wanting to paint them. Can you tell me how you strip all the plastic and what would be a good paint kit to get. Thanks bud
Man, I have so many boxes of these classics in unpainted freshly assembled condition from my “reserve” armies that you would lose your mind! The bowling ball heavy Dreadnoughts were epic and there’s 6 unpainted along with pretty much everything my main army had. Too much free $ and time obviously in my teens 😂 The only drawback is the ridiculous weight of the collection, ya could squash children with an accident involving a fall while transporting your army 😂🤣
I'm nervous about painting metal miniatures, don't know why. I'm still new to painting but after watching a few of your videos it seems like it's a lot more forgiving than painting plastic
In terms of painting they are a little more forgiving because of the amount of detail on them. They have defined parts and pieces because they had to be sculpted by hand, so it's easier to tell where to go next. That being said, it can be tough sometimes because that detail is soft and you have to make up for it by painting stuff in to make it look like the thing it's supposed to be. They are great to paint though and I find that I can get a good result faster with metal minis, newer plastic is so clean that if you miss something it's really noticeable.
@@eBayMiniatureRescues yeah I am past giving them my money anyhow. I came in at fourth edition but my hobby store had a bunch of third edition models which I totally snagged as a clueless junior high student. Well the paint on them is nice an smooth, so they are basically basecoated. I should do a few just to see what they look like with the skills i have now. Dont think I'll be doing all 200 of them tho.
@@stretch3281 it’s always nice seeing how much progress you’ve made since old projects, it does help keep up the motivation, but yeah, 200 is a lot lol
Still have a box of those AND a few blisters of Legion of the Damned.
Nice work! I couldn't let that stand with the marine armed with a bazooka, I'd have to drill out!
I know what you mean, but man I would hate to mess that up lol
Dang it Casey, this is the kind of video I want to actuall WATCH, not just listen to while I work or hobby.
Great stuff friend 👏 👍
Personaly while I am trying to do a retro astetics army I would like updated old style minis, that actualy looks like art. The New terminator for warhammer plus is so awsome I want a squad of them.
Yes, you can order the old SM minis off ebay, or, what I did last week, go to your parents house and retrieve your Chaplain from 2000. Going to Re-Do this single miniature to my "now standard". :)
I have some older metal marines and a captain. I developed a mild obsession with metal terminators.
I do have a soft spot for those old Termis, so iconic!
I'd love to see you do a devestator squad with the minus from space crusade 💖
Cool Jinjer shirt
Man, I have 2 squads of Devastators from 2nd edition... I may try to repaint them just because my skills were not great back then
I'm fairly new to the modeling side of Warhammer. I do like the older metal models, especially the Chaos Terminators and grab them whenever I see one for a decent price.
Those Terminators are so good!
Just had to retire one of those red brushes this year past.
Also Selling a lot of my old space marines.
This is like pure nostalgia for me. Although, generally Space Marine models were cooler than todays versions, Imperial Guard models were even cooler. Also, if you can find them, squats are awesome
Great video, lovely paint job man. Yeah sorry I comment as I watch the videos 🤣
Hahah, no worries man, every comment helps for real!
I do miss the white metal marines.. the weight gave the impression they were really bulky marines..lol
Committing the cardinal sin and commenting before watching the whole entire video, but yes!!! But I am biased as I'm restoring about 90 of them right now...
I’d love you to buy an old army and paint them how they’d be painted at the time
I paint for display anyway, so have amassed a load of 90s marines for dunking and re-painting
JINJER!!! Hell yeah
So good! I’m hoping to see them in about a month, can’t wait :)
@@eBayMiniatureRescues had the pleasure of seeing them in Melbourne just before we got locked down, was pretty epic! Enjoy man you'll love it 🤘
Yes. The old Legion of the Damned on a gaming board?
if you like the old nostalgic stuff, then yes. Personally, I like the newer stuff and I'd never pay some of those crazy prices for the old stuff.
For a collection purpose it will be always worth it ! They gonna start to be rare and i want at least a squad that i can paint properly xD
Old school Necromunda, you had to kitbash with metal. The way of the Glue-fu had to be strong
hahah, yeah kitbashing metal is an entire hobby all on its own!
i feel like you should have wiped away a little bit more wash on the weapon. it looks more like grime than shadow
Primarus for life lol
They're basically Ultramarines now anyways. So much blasphemy though. Sanguinius would be rolling in his... oh. :(
That one ended up pretty cool, with lots of character. :)
There is plenty of worth in older Space Marines and other ancient miniatures, even with the scale creep in mind.
OFC how else am I gonna get my daily dose of Lead ..
What ?
Yes lead?
Ooh you mean the new white metal marines...
I’d suggest you try Purple Power to clean and strip old models.
I’ve used it before. It works well enough, but I switched to LAs totally awesome because I can get it for $1 per bottle and it’s great!
Hey there really like you shows keep it going :)
I would like to know how high is the temp when your cleaning plastic models I have some old roguetrader and don't want to melt them
Dan
Is it bad that I wanna paint up some 30k loyalist EC with the over-the-top weapons colours of 2nd Edition?
You should, that would be great!
I see a Jinjer shirt, I hit like
I went out of my way to get some monopose space marines to add to my army. I have 0 regrets.
see the menu in the ad at the start of the vidéo,
my brain: welcome to : not france
You can use the grey knight strike squad with old fashion helmets so kitbash time
Yes, old cool warhammer is always worth buying.
I also like that you used somewhat Bolt Thrower'ish backround music, nice touch!
I don't have to buy any, I've got dozens sitting in boxes out in my shed.
That I've been rooting around and rearranging lately.
I mean as long as they have weapons that are used still today I just rebase my old models and they work just fine.
So, what are these worth? I have an original, unpainted Khorne Berserker blister pack, a chaos bike...is that a thing?
@@eBayMiniatureRescues ok that makes sense, thank you for explaining that to me I appreciate it :)
How about painting an intercessor with bright retro UM painting style?
I’ve seen some Primaris armies painted like that, it’s very cool and still has that same old hammer feel.
5:43 Did that superglue remover contain acetone? Because that will eat right true metal when it's pure and damage the model, when it is not.
I don't think it does, I've never had any issues with it eating plastic or metal before. It does take the glue off though.
GW. Make a retro series!
Kinda feels like that, weird coincidence probably, but also could be some kind of subconscious manipulation…I wouldn’t put it past them
@@eBayMiniatureRescues yeah I am past giving them my money anyhow. I came in at fourth edition but my hobby store had a bunch of third edition models which I totally snagged as a clueless junior high student. So I think it's time to go back and paint em with a not junior high talent and instead with the knowledge I've gained from your channel and others.
