@@cocoTr33 YES oh man I was trying to remember what it was. I knew it had to be something incredibly comedic because I recall laughing for several minutes about it
My wifes favorite book as a child was a monochrome black and white book called The Spider and The Fly, about a spider eating his fly-guests. We bought a copy for my niece when she was born.
That's the ✨️fun✨️ thing about traumatic memories, they sometimes stick in your brain with remarkable clarity despite being something you would probably rather forget! 🙃
My friends had told me I would love this episode before I even started listening to the podcast but wow. This was both great and very, very disturbing. I mean, I have this habit of knocking on things when I know there's a spider living nearby. Just... you know, knocking on the wooden things and gently moving around objects, so they can hide and I don't have to see them. A fair warning, I always thought. "hey, I know you live there too, and I wouldn't want to rob you of your home, but for both our sake, it might be better if we just... avoid each other! So knock knock, I'm coming, can you please retreat to your hiding spot for as long as I'm the room? Thanks. You're a nice spider." I don't think I'll ever be able to unhear this episode. Huh. I think I might want to reconsider my silly habit. It's no wonder the friend who got me into TMA got so ominous with me when I told her of this habit as a small quirk of mine.
spookiness aside, that's very sweet of you to do. I think it's really nice when people remember that spiders are living things too and treat them accordingly- I think you can tell a lot about a person from how they treat small creatures.
Wow, bro, please don't call it silly, and definitely don't abandon it! That is such a nice thing to do! It's one thing to not want to harm them when you're completely okay with them and even consider them cute sometimes (watch me turn into Martin there for a sec), but it's so much more meaningful when you are scared of them, but still want to arrange your coexistence in a way that would be comfortable for both sides. That's... that's a lot of humanity in there, pal. Keep it up.
Ok but it’s actually really sad to me that jon refers to his tormentor as just a “bully”. Like, he was an adult, you were EIGHT. That’s not a bully, that’s an abuser :((
Right?? A bully is someone close enough to your age that they can't exert any real power over you, this is someone way, way too old to be antagonizing a child, that's totally just abusive bullshit at that point
'but now i realize that i was actually a deeply annoying child' me and my room mate after 15 minutes of complete silence burst into uncontrollable laughter YEAH. YEAH MATE. I BET YOU WERE.
I got a chill when he started describing the book. I work in a public library and I swear to God that I came across a picture book that matched his description. I'm glad I stopped after bluebottle
Same, I remembered coming across something drastically similar to what was described here, I looked into it and there is a black and white picture book called The spider and the fly. Must have been what I saw.
@@thefisherking2268 I know it wasnt the spider and the fly and I wish I could remember the title, but yeah the first few pages sounded strikingly similar to what I remember. I'm going back to work soon, so I'll keep my eyes peeled for it
Considering Leitners tend to be basically evil paranormal knockoffs of real books, that actually makes sense! I hadn’t even considered Mr. Spider also being based off of a real picture book! That’s so cool! 😃
as someone who's,,, familiar with childhood trauma, this is rlly well written and hits close to home. ksxbhd obviously i didn't watch someone get eaten by a demon book or w/e but like the way he processed it, the way it fucks up your brain when you blame yourself & makes it difficult to accept help or get close to people,,,, i'm not here to dig up my shit but good job writing a realistic depiction of trauma, especially the long-term effects !! shit hurts but it's actually really nice to see this kind of trauma depicted in a realistic way in a work of fiction ^^
I've been deeply enjoying this podcast while working on moving, enjoying some spooky stories. But these latest episodes are the ones that really start to freak me out. And I think that's because they're so much more real. The others are stories recounting what happened, and in a way that's better because you know that the person telling the story makes it out alive(or at least somewhat alive in some instances). But these past few episodes, it's all being recorded as it happens. There is nothing to reassure you that anyone is going to make it out alive. And now I'm caught up in a whole range of emotions because Jon is clearly not ok, and I don't think he'll ever be truly ok again, and that breaks my heart. But we also don't know what's going on with Martin and Tim and if they're ok or what Elias is up to. And that worries me.
Just once, when the episode ends and the closing music comes on, I want to hear Tim's voice say, "The adventures of Joe Spooky is a podcast distributed by..."
“There is so much more horror in this world than I had ever dreamt possible. And my suffering, I now know, pales in comparison to what has befallen others far more innocent than I. But perhaps not for long.”
im so glad to hear jon admitting he needs allies.. also his interactions with georgie are surprisingly sweet. its exciting to see that kind of a dynamic
Finally a worthy opponent! Our battle will be legendary! also, YES SOMEONE ELSE REMEMBERS THOSE BOOKS PEOPLE LOOK AT ME LIKE I'M CRAZY WHEN I MENTION THEM
this is already my favourite episode tbh but honestly the most shocking thing is that jon is a 90'S KID WHAT i thought he was at LEAST 40 lmao but somehow knowing that hes probably in his late 20's makes this all so much more tragic wtf also, if the eye thing apparently claimed jon and if that happened when he was a child or something, then maybe the spider tried to kill him because it hates the eye or something idk (that would also explain why jon hated the spider book & spiders in general i think) (maybe that was also why his parents died just from different monsters) its kind of funny to me how he literally Watched all that happen like it makes sense its the eye
you probably already have all this figured out if you've finished the podcast; but the Web was the first entity to 'mark' Jon. Elias and the Beholding chose Jon because he had already been marked by one of the entities; and he needs someone who is marked by every entity (or Fear) for his grand scheme. I don't believe that Jon was claimed by the Eye until he took over Gertrude's position, but I could be misremembering. But also, very convenient for Elias that Gertrude's understudy had already been marked once. Poor Jon, though.
I love how Jon is able to perfectly remember and describe the book after so many years knowing he read it only once. I wonder if it has sth to do with the beholding
... I don't know why but this really got to me like I was literally kind of crying? Well this is probably my body telling me to take a break from horror podcasts before I get a heart attack
it's really nice to hear him in a more sane mental state, though. I think it might have been because he's further away from the institute and his "master" of whatever but feels like he really is just now processing this
Currently listening to this episode on Spotify again, I'm just here to comment. It's the... 4th, 5th time I'm hearing this episode now. And it still is and remains one of the few statements that actually gives me chills. It's among my favorites, partly because I adore Jon and it's great, although painful to learn more about his background. But the story about Mr. Spider scared the everliving shit out of me and it's just the same each time I'm listening. The writing and performance of this one are genius. As are the sound effects and background music, it really does its job to have me on the edge of the seat and chills running down my back.

05:48 Did you mean: *me* 06:43 Welp, they mentioned Diana Wynne Jones. There goes my heart, given voluntarily to this podcast for like the thousandth time in two weeks. /I hope the one book he read from her was Howl's Moving Castle; it's undoubtedly the best, with Castle in the Air coming close second and Witch Week hanging out in the third place/ 16:40 I was so ready to hear him saying "...but I have since come to the conclusion that I was a d/ck". C'mon, Jon. We all know you pretty well by now. You don't have to dance around it like that. Ooh, so Melanie was not the first person from the "let's make the things that torment the archivists and assistans of the Magnus Institute sound like fun and entertainment" cathegory that Jon has met. Interesting. S1 Jon: His dead body was completely wrapped in webs? Definitely a stroke. S3 Jon: Yeah, I've met Daddy Longlegs before, nasty thing, def supernatural, made me go to the Archives in the first place. S1 Jon: Oh you, "respectable" "paranormal investigators", with your fancy equipment to give it some "sparkle" (of bullshit, ahem, what? nothing), coming to us, credulous fools to make a statement? So honoured, so honoured. S3 Jon: Oh hey, Georgy c: I cleaned your kitchen c: Love your cat c: Thank you so much for having me c: Sorry for the trouble c: Will be quiet as a mouse c: Will stop recording everything like the maniac that I am just because you need some peace and quiet c: /shy chuckle/ I'm having a blast, glad I waited for a good time to sit down and enjoy this without being in a hurry. What a start for the new season! Love the insight on Jon, the new girl who I already know I would kill for without hesitation, and the potential this sticky situation gives us. So did Jon just see Leitner's body and noped the ef out of there immediately bc he knew exactly how the whole thing was gonna go? The sitch is terrible, but the picture in my head is hilarious, not gonna lie.
My mom gave me a copy of War and Peace when I was nine. She told me it had princes and princesses in it. I also found the Princess diaries in my room when I was seven. I wasn’t sure what the words algebra and sex meant, but other than that thought they were fun books.
8:39 is when the description of the book starts! 15:22 is where it ends! Just a lil bookmark for myself, the description is my favorite part and I rewatch this episode almost every day.
Big big oof at his childhood bully accidentally saving his life only to get eaten by the Web book. O.o Wonder how Jon will get any statements this season.
The decription of the creatures visiting the spider remided me a lot of the other 'entities' we've seen so far, was that an obvious hint or am I tripping balls?
ok, i finished the podcast but I came back to this episode because I just realized an interesting detail. This might be slight spoilers but I don't think it is. ↓ I just realized. You know how Jon has premature graying hair. That could have been his mark from the spider :) maybe it isn't graying hair, but very vivid and thick strands of silky spiderweb ;3 or maybe it is metaphorical spider web. nonetheless I still think it was the mark he got from the spider XD

@@mackenziedillon295 Because he knew that everyone would think he did it, because of how sketchy he was acting all of s2. Tim literally expected him to snap, and then there is a dead man in Johns office.
he bravely ran away
@@mimkyodar also elias probably framed him. still i dont know why he kept the tape recorder in the room, he didnt took it or anything and jon probably has it and its HARD evidence against eilas
Well when you're framed for murder and all...
I'm so happy Jon has an actual friend who he can count on and who is very patient with him. I'm glad Georgie seemed to have adopted Admiral, he'll try his best to take care of the spiders
I don't think the spiders will bother Jon. :P

@@cocoTr33 YES oh man I was trying to remember what it was. I knew it had to be something incredibly comedic because I recall laughing for several minutes about it
Yeah I had to wiki it to remember
The story about the fly that had to sacrifice his own child and was still eaten shook me to my core tbh

There's two kinds of books
One that you can read twice or more often
And one that you read once and never again
😂
So his childhood bully really out here saving Jons life unknowingly
I wasn't expecting that minute of Jon being pleasantly soft after all that trauma and drama, huh, I like Georgie already
My wifes favorite book as a child was a monochrome black and white book called The Spider and The Fly, about a spider eating his fly-guests. We bought a copy for my niece when she was born.
The next archivist is being raised just nearby😂
Well that’s concerning
The "ex archivist" hurt me more than it should've
Y e a h same like-
*John mentions being a 90's kid.*
Me: Oh, @#$%! He is, at most, 31. John is most likely younger than I am.
It's impressive Jon remembers each line and drawing by heart. Good memories those archivists have.
More like trauma-
I think that might just be the Leitner metaphysically engraving itself in little Jon's mind
That's the ✨️fun✨️ thing about traumatic memories, they sometimes stick in your brain with remarkable clarity despite being something you would probably rather forget! 🙃
that + it is a primitive childrens book innit
Thanks. You're a nice spider."
I don't think I'll ever be able to unhear this episode. Huh. I think I might want to reconsider my silly habit. It's no wonder the friend who got me into TMA got so ominous with me when I told her of this habit as a small quirk of mine.
Did you happen to read the book too? maybe you buried the memory
spookiness aside, that's very sweet of you to do.
Keep it up.
Jon was a kid in the 90's??? fkn hell i assumed he was late 30's
The fact he has been having a constant breakdown for the past year makes a lot more sense now
... people who were kids in the 90s can be in their late 30s in 2016.
@@tomdekler9280 I think both he and Martin are supposed to be in their late 20s/early 30s throughout the seasons, both born in the very late 80s
@sadman sad ... for basic math?
Jon was 29 when the series started- I think he's 33 by the end?
Ok but it’s actually really sad to me that jon refers to his tormentor as just a “bully”. Like, he was an adult, you were EIGHT. That’s not a bully, that’s an abuser :((
Right?? A bully is someone close enough to your age that they can't exert any real power over you, this is someone way, way too old to be antagonizing a child, that's totally just abusive bullshit at that point
PLEASE make that book as merch. I love it and need it.
they could make a entire series about "lietners", VERY creepy and off putting books and i would buy it in a heartbeat
i think if i ever found one randomly in an old books shop i’d have a heart attack
I googled "A guest for mister spider" and got a few fan-made results
That would be amazing
I hope you got in on the kickstarter recently then!
'but now i realize that i was actually a deeply annoying child'

YEAH. YEAH MATE. I BET YOU WERE.
Hahahaha
Listening in company is quite reasurring, I alway listen with my doggy near to me. ;)
the news that Jon was bullied as a kid absolutely comes as no surprise
I got a chill when he started describing the book. I work in a public library and I swear to God that I came across a picture book that matched his description. I'm glad I stopped after bluebottle
Though, if they had created this book and sold it as merch... I would totally buy it. (once I'm an adult and have my own job that is)
Details? I’m legitimately curious about this
Same, I remembered coming across something drastically similar to what was described here, I looked into it and there is a black and white picture book called The spider and the fly.
Spoilers:
"Why does your memory do that to so many important people? Some people deserve to be remembered."
That broke my heart.
as someone who's,,, familiar with childhood trauma, this is rlly well written and hits close to home. ksxbhd obviously i didn't watch someone get eaten by a demon book or w/e but like the way he processed it, the way it fucks up your brain when you blame yourself & makes it difficult to accept help or get close to people,,,, i'm not here to dig up my shit but good job writing a realistic depiction of trauma, especially the long-term effects !! shit hurts but it's actually really nice to see this kind of trauma depicted in a realistic way in a work of fiction ^^
Statement of Jonathan "Based" Sims, calling out every researcher in the SCP Foundation.
Statement begins:
Just once, when the episode ends and the closing music comes on, I want to hear Tim's voice say, "The adventures of Joe Spooky is a podcast distributed by..."
“There is so much more horror in this world than I had ever dreamt possible. And my suffering, I now know, pales in comparison to what has befallen others far more innocent than I. But perhaps not for long.”
Well, we can confirm Elias is no friend of Mr Spider. Elias loves cake.

‘the spider was staring at me-‘
skipskipskipskipskipskipskip i would like to sleep tonight
this is already my favourite episode tbh but honestly the most shocking thing is that jon is a 90'S KID WHAT
i thought he was at LEAST 40 lmao but somehow knowing that hes probably in his late 20's makes this all so much more tragic wtf
also, if the eye thing apparently claimed jon and if that happened when he was a child or something, then maybe the spider tried to kill him because it hates the eye or something idk (that would also explain why jon hated the spider book & spiders in general i think) (maybe that was also why his parents died just from different monsters)
its kind of funny to me how he literally Watched all that happen like it makes sense its the eye
you probably already have all this figured out if you've finished the podcast; but the Web was the first entity to 'mark' Jon.
There's something about things made to look like kid stuff but... aren't, that just screams at our subconscious fears
That is the perfect way to describe it.
jesus CHRIST. this podcast and this episode are AMAZING but JESUS
Jon's life got even more messed up. Poor guy
''i was a deeply annoying child'' mood
I love how Jon is able to perfectly remember and describe the book after so many years knowing he read it only once.
I wonder if it has sth to do with the beholding
ITS 2:15 AM AND I JUST FINISHED SEASON 2. BOY AM I EXCITED.
That explains spider hatred in Jon
... I don't know why but this really got to me like I was literally kind of crying? Well this is probably my body telling me to take a break from horror podcasts before I get a heart attack
My developing pts got the fuck out of me at the end of the last episode now my roommate is being yelled at by our friend for not warning me
"...statement ends..."
This little part hurt me.
aww, glad at least Jon had One Friend. soon Martin will find him and he will have Two! double!
it's really nice to hear him in a more sane mental state, though. I think it might have been because he's further away from the institute and his "master" of whatever but feels like he really is just now processing this

As are the sound effects and background music, it really does its job to have me on the edge of the seat and chills running down my back.
ooo thank's for taking the time to come to youtube to share your thoughts! Your comment really encapsulates my feelings abt. the story too! 💗
Not me realizing his voracious appetite for books parallels his literal appetite for tapes.
omg you're right 0.0 he's always been eating information huh
Why am I listening to this before bed in the dark when until very recently I had/ still have a strong fear of spiders......this isn't going to end well

05:48 Did you mean: *me*
06:43 Welp, they mentioned Diana Wynne Jones. There goes my heart, given voluntarily to this podcast for like the thousandth time in two weeks.
/I hope the one book he read from her was Howl's Moving Castle; it's undoubtedly the best, with Castle in the Air coming close second and Witch Week hanging out in the third place/
16:40 I was so ready to hear him saying "...but I have since come to the conclusion that I was a d/ck".
S3 Jon: Oh hey, Georgy c: I cleaned your kitchen c: Love your cat c: Thank you so much for having me c: Sorry for the trouble c: Will be quiet as a mouse c: Will stop recording everything like the maniac that I am just because you need some peace and quiet c: /shy chuckle/
I'm having a blast, glad I waited for a good time to sit down and enjoy this without being in a hurry.
/smack's Jon's bony shoulder, probably sending him sprawling

'the elephant and the balloon' is the most amazing reference i never would have expected. That made me laugh out loud thank you
Glad I wasn't the only one who caught that!

Yes! Someone gets it lol
My parents are like Jons grandma, they have never censored me so its why I read The Hunger Games at 8
Mine let me read Edgar Allan Poe's books at 5. My favorite one was the pendulum
My mom gave me a copy of War and Peace when I was nine. She told me it had princes and princesses in it.
I also found the Princess diaries in my room when I was seven. I wasn’t sure what the words algebra and sex meant, but other than that thought they were fun books.
John: *admits he needs help*
Me: took you long enough jesus

The story of the Mr. Spider book was genius. It's given me more of the heebie-jeebies than anything else in this podcast.
8:39 is when the description of the book starts! 15:22 is where it ends! Just a lil bookmark for myself, the description is my favorite part and I rewatch this episode almost every day.
Big big oof at his childhood bully accidentally saving his life only to get eaten by the Web book. O.o
Wonder how Jon will get any statements this season.
The decription of the creatures visiting the spider remided me a lot of the other 'entities' we've seen so far, was that an obvious hint or am I tripping balls?
It does sound vaguely familiar ...
Wow okay that one ACTUALLY unnerved me. Possessed child book. FUN
ok, i finished the podcast but I came back to this episode because I just realized an interesting detail. This might be slight spoilers but I don't think it is.

I just realized. You know how Jon has premature graying hair. That could have been his mark from the spider :)
maybe it isn't graying hair, but very vivid and thick strands of silky spiderweb ;3
or maybe it is metaphorical spider web. nonetheless I still think it was the mark he got from the spider XD
Ooooh I love this idea

This is where the neurodivergents flock to lol
I don’t know why but this was the episode that freaked me out the most
When it hurts the heart this much, it's a good episode. :( Glad Jon has found some momentary sanctuary!
Brilliant writing and voice acting, as usual. After hearing this episode, I feel like I've actually seen those pages, which is all kinds of awesome for an arachnophobe. XD
Can't complain that a horror podcast references spiders frequently... but I wish I hadn't happened to listen to this episode right before going to bed.
Glad that finally ppl in the fandom saw that Jon is not a unidimensional person nor just a bitter person
and yet he had the audacity to make fun of that guy from season 1 who was stalked and killed by that angry silver spider
It's funny how much child jon sounds like child me. And I'm neruodivergent too, so I guess that makes sense.
I've related a lot to Jon but this was like being slapped in the face. I was the same type of child, both gifted and neurodivergent who could be kept from pestering the adults if I had a book to read.
Johns collected all the As, autistic, asexual and AAAAAAAAAH
Same, Im neurodivergent and it's always fun listening to how my mum thought something was wrong with me while I just sat there reading a book for two hours
I like how it is shown why Mr. Spider's arms are constantly moving. It is in order to bring you closer.
Kind of unrelated, but I always think of it as a guy called Rusty Quill.
