Yesterday upon the stair
I saw a man who wasn't there
He wasn't there again today
I think he's from the CIA
IT'S A PARTY IN THE C I A
Lmao
The true horror of this episode is existence of a person not knowing you can go to a restaurant alone and eat the food without any date.
TSal Mei Extroverts are weird.
Meat is meat my friends.
@@mrjones2721 As an introvert I get super nervous going to a sit down restaurant by myself but then I also get super nervous going with people who aren't family idk xD
Yeah, going to a full-on restaurant alone is pretty weird. What are you gonna do, listen to your headphones? xd
@@jaderush4141 Ive done it more than once and id just listen to an audiobook but its still extremely nervewracking to go alone😅

Georgie's seriously growing on me, she's such a doll. Letting Jon crash at her place, generally caring for her friends, awesome taste in food and having named her cat the Admiral? Love her.
Think he know Major Tom?
That's usually when characters die.. I hope not..
I love how they decided that The Admiral doesn't die, while writing TMA, rather than making it a cheap shot to disturb the listener like some other horror series' might use.
I had no idea she was a new character I confused here with the other girl from what the ghost
First Sea Lord, Admiral of the Royal Fleet, Sir Kitty
Yea. I like Georgie, Jon feels/sounds almost "normal" with her. Plus I'd eat some Hungarian food with her!
I know anyone that can get Jon to sound stable again is pure in my book
I am not known to fancy a ship, but Jon/Georgie is a ship i will be sailing with XD

he sounds so tired when he cant call himself the archivist :(
Well, he also used to sound tired when he could and did do that, so I can't even tell if things are better or worse with that. Is it just him fully realising the gravity of his situation, or is it that it's physically hard for him to exist outside of the Institute bc of whatever bullshit is keeping them tethered to it? I wonder.

I love all of the subtle hints that Jon and Georgie know each other super well, or at least used to. The "you've been weird all day" is the kind of thing you say to someone you've known for YEARS, the way he casually but sincerely compliments how she's dressed up, the affectionate teasing about dates and food preferences... it's so SOFT.
I think we needed to see this side of Jon after S2, and Georgie's just so perfect a character to bring it out in him. It definitely helps that her voice is so effortlessly sweet.
Jon mentioned knowing them in the first ghosthunter episode
If Jon wasn't... Jon, I'd guess they were exes but I get more of the feel that they separated because of... Different views on the paranormal
@@fish3977 they are exes?
Exactly, I love their dynamic so much. Plus it really is nice seeing (hearing? I feel like I'm watching a show this series is so well written and acted) Jon be happy and interact positively with someone
"says her co-workers are super weird?" hahaha yea...........
I don't know who she's calling weird Tim is the coolest guy you'll ever meet (especially given the recent trauma he's been dealing with after the worm wife incident) and Martin is the sweetest person in the universe even tried to subtly warn her that a job at the Magnus Institute was not one she should take on...I guess there's Elias he's pretty sus
I can't believe the crescendo of this episode was Georgie ranting about Hungarian food.
I NEED MY SHEEP'S CHEESE, JON.
Kind of normal for this show.
Imagine if this ep ended with jon forgetting that he was reading this statement or the fact that it existed because you know.. it was not there
hey this is pretty neat... how did you manage to leave a blank comment?
@@charliem.1368 What are you talking about? What comment?
Luckily we can always see.
This is really cool, a blank thread
Jon may hate Michael for randomly killing people, but he draws the line at misgendering
Ever since he moved in with h Georgie, Jon sounds like he actually believes more of the statements he's been recording. Not including his comments at the end, but more the empathy that goes into reading them
That's because he's starting to live them and to be fair he did say he was always just super dismissive because most of them were ridiculous and the ones that actually sounded like they could be real he was too scared to believe they were incredible living in ignorant bliss and dismissing the monsters under the bed is a lot better than accepting they exist
Oh, calling it now, by the way - Jon's absolutely not Jon but the Archivist as a creature. He can't not be the Archivist even if he literally isn't working at the Arrchives. Maybe the statements just manifest around him, too.
I love this theory, hope it's right honestly
Heheheheh
This is a fantastic observation. I won't say how right or wrong it is for the sake of other listeners, but it's fantastic.
The Archivist the is not a job or a title, but a state of being.
In the credits it says that The Archivist is voices by Jonathan Sims. All the other characters get names in the credits.
i love georgie so much. "I JUST WANT HUNGARIAN FOOD" my baby please never die
Jon being just a regular dude has turned out to be weirdly endearing.
Season 1, he's a pompous ass.
Season 2, he's a paranoid nutter.
Season 3, he's just a guy, you know?
creatures that used to be people... oh Jon. This was really unsettling. This statement is so good.
It’s weird, it’s confusing, it got someone afraid, and _I love it_
I’ve been noticed, and I do not know whether the tingle down my spine was one of excitement or fear.
“gO AWAY...and please dont slam the door! :)” i love it when jon reads
“*Which is what I was already doing.*” It’s so wonderfully sassy that I actually started laughing!
It's funnier because he's sassing at nobody in particular.
@@nanahuatli2144 he's sassing someone who isn't there?
I think this is genuinely the best written episode so far
same
I don't know the tape story was a bit confusing this episode little too poetic but I do love Jon's chat with Georgie. My favourite episodes will always be Anatomy Class and Grifter's Bone :P
@@amphitritemists4595 A story about The Spiral was confusing? You don’t say...
LOL, a story centered around a literal poem was too poetic? You don’t say...
I like the tiny oh at the end when he realizes it’s still recording
He's babey
The "oh" at the end as if John forgot he's left the recording on was a nice touch.
Here's my theory. The statements and records tell of people who cannot resist the portfolio of whatever eldritch horror they are bound to. John thinks he's entangled or ensorcelled or whatever with The Eye. If any word fits an eye it's Observer. John, as someone who falls under the domain of the Observer, is reading and recording these statements. His reading them is his way of "observing" what's happening.
yeeees
"My stiarcase is very short and has one 90 degree turn. That's why I realized after going down a spiral staircase for half an hour, that this was, in fact, not my staircase."
You think they would have failed to realize that about a minute in.
"I was disappointed, then, to discover it was simply a reference to a haunting. By tying it to a real place and a known story, the strange, disconcerting nonsense at the heart of it was lost."
Exactly how I felt when he explained the origin of one of my favorite poems from childhood.
I love the overarching plot stuff, but can we please talk about how good this statement was?
discordance and absence and altered state of mind of the one who unwillingly became the negative space atop the stairs
The writing was so intriguing it's amazing. He denies the man ever exists, denies that the man ever spoke at all and denies he knows what the face of the man looks like. And yet subconsciously answers and negates the previous paragraphs in a really well written statement. I'm saving this one.
Aw it’s nice to hear Jon talking to a friend like a... normal person.
Man, I have pretty severe depersonalization and derealization disorder, and psychosis is a huge part of my life, so all the episodes featuring the distortion and the spiral are the scarest to me, because I can personally relate to the feeling of unreality and “un-being” that they portrait lol
as a Hungarian the end part had me screaming I can't believe anyone knows Hungary exists
OMG! SAME! Bár egy magyar étterem angliában egy kicsit megrémít... XD
Same!
I always get so excited when they mention Hungary, like "oh my god, representation!"
I'm Czech but I feel you. Recognising two (probably) Czech names in this podcast so far had me too excited for my own good lmao
i haven't commented on any previous episodes but this is my first time through and this is already easily a favorite episode; the contradictive wording is so...fascinating? definitely left me feeling nervous yet intrigued.
and did anyone else notice the slight static while jon was reading the poem? i can't shake the feeling michael has something to do with this.
Jon is so sassy -- "skulking around, which is what I was already doing", I love it.
There’s only one staircase in my house and it’s to my bedroom. I wanted a snack but now I don’t want to go downstairs… the next episode better be about bugs again so I can go get my ice cream
this is my favorite episode case-wise. the writing of the statement is so intriguing, it really pulls you in
The story of someone watching their humanity and reality slip away, killing and losing their family by accident... it's such good writing and excellent foreshadowing of the plot.
I love Georgie and Jon's relationship, it's like annoyed siblings who care about eachother a lot
Georgie and Jon's banter is so funny, it's nice to see Jon be so comfortable with someone that doesn't see him as an unstable old man murderer
I know I might be a bit late to the party with this, but this episode is by far one of my favourites from the entire series. The sense of dread throughout this is palpable.
No idea what palpable is but I agree
@@Shemagh4 Palpable is "feeling an emotion/feeling so intensely that you could literally touch it"
Am I the only one who finds the tiny "oh" sound Jon makes when he notices that the recorder is still running in the end adorable?
This episode is at least five cuils from reality, and I love it more than the things that are not there are or are not there!
ayy, venturing logo! buddies!
The funny stuff is that while reading, Jon sounded fricking close at the way Michael talks, specially during the poem? I think. Is like... the tone? Or the inflexion probably is more accurate.
"Speaking of weirdos, you have a hungarian mountain man you need ti court."
This made me laugh so hard i cryed 😂
We passed upon the stair
We spoke of was and when
Although I wasn't there
He said I was his friend
Which came as some surprise
I spoke into his eyes, "I thought you died alone
A long long time ago"
Man who lost the world by Bowie?
👀✨
I love Georgie, she's funny. And the friendly dynamic between her and jon is refreshing. I hope I'll hear more of her later on and that she doesn't end up dead...
God, what an amazingly written episode
"But, y'know, she thinks you're a dick." was the best part of this entire episode.
When Melanie lost her team, I already have some thoughts about whether if she's gonna join soon the institute * w *
When I heard her exchanging vitriol with Jon in a magnificent way, and then when she showed up a second time, I had a feeling she'd eventually have a lasting role. You can't let that chemistry go to waste.
As a hungarian i was kinda shocked at our mention but hey Georgie is just that much deeper held in my heart for me 😂❤
Okay, I know that Elias being the one who is sending Jon the statements makes the most sense... but imagine Martin doing so, knowing damn well where Jon is and lying to Daisy because of him. Just imagine.
It's sad of the entities who were once human but lost their humanity, unable to get it back.
I love Georgie so, so, so much.
I know why Jon is sent the story of entities who were once human but I won't spoil it for any new listeners. I got spoiled by animatics but I want to listen to this story.
So many stories in your mortal history of men who weren't there.
Who/at the fucketh are thou?
The writing is amazing! It's creepy and a bit sad but also oddly soothing? Great job! This podcast keeps on getting better.
I can't help but notice that the intonation of "the magnus archives" at the beginning changed and now it makes you instantly wonder about jonah magnus and his deal or in general about the origins and the intentions of the institute, nice detail
This is one of my two favorite episodes. It made me nervous to pass the stairs in my home after dark for a while. It's so well written and fun.
Everyone’s talking about the “oh” at the end but this:
“I mean she survived?”
“I hope so, I’m going for a drink with her on Thursday. Be a bit awkward if not”
“Right…”
MY GOD, IT’S SO HILARIOUS.
Thank you Jon, for forgetting that the tape recorder was still on. Because that conversation was wonderful 😂
Also I freakin love the writing, easily one of my favorite episodes. Especially since I like rhyming poems, and word play (I love the contradictory wording of not being there), and when he changed the poem to say "I"? Beautiful.
Loved the little noise at the end when Jon realizes that the tape recorder is still- well... recording.
At least our new assistant has friends? That's good? Poor Jon, having little heart attacks with that woman.
I can't stop imagining Elias humming while choosing statements and graping them with other kind of papers and stuff related to them with a little smile "I can't let my fav Archivist forget how to work" :D
Definitely this statement has been the most... like cryptic? At least in my perception. Reading other comments make me think that it could be foreshadowing and That is scary, let's see how that goes
“I NEED MY SHEEP’S CHEESE, JON.”
shane madej voice: hey ghooouls
Shane walks into the Archives like “Hey entities, it’s me, ya boi” and proceeds to tell Jon just how stupid these statements are and how they’re all false while Jon just sits there mid-statement looking stunned and wondering who this man is
Shane is an entity himself, of course. That’s the only logical option here.. right?
Jon having wholesome interactions with his friends >>>> (seriously, this was so cute 🥺🥺)
I've had to sleep with the lights on for two night after this
This episode was so abstract and strange. I think its the strangest episode imo by far. I'm glad Georgi and John are friends. They seem ti really care/vibe with each other imo
oh georgie is wonderful, i really like her:D and despite everything jon is letting more of his humanity through, i think everyone in the institute should take a long long long break to unwind bc they genuinely seem to feel better once theyre not there
i loved the poem incorporation into the plot too!
Spinoff where they all go camping.
"The man's a poet"
Jon, we all know you're comparing him to your own poet
Georgie is so cute!! ...please don’t die! please don’t die!
Is it strange I kind of ship Melanie and Jon? They're so similar and unfond of each other that it's funny. On a side note, I hope we learn how Georgie knows her, she seems to have talked a lot about her to Jon.
i think they mentioned they worked together before (think they mention it in the first ep melanie shows up in)
Thar Chandran
i get it, but i’m a total martin and jon shipper tbh
@@soaring-comet I got interested in tma because of a martin/jon fanfic I read!
Too bad we’re all gay
That's the bickering assholes charm, I fell for it too.
“Says her coworkers are super weird”
Jon: “Really,” reminds me of the institute... there’s no way she can be working there right?? “Really??”
This story reminds me of the paradoxical phrase “This statement is false.” If it is true then it is false and if it is false then it is true.
I used to have a poetry book with this poem in it when I was a kid and it frightened me so much I hid the book so I wouldn't have to think about it.
I really love this statement. It's so confusing and relaxing idk it somehow feels like a Jane Prentiss/Insomnia girl statement (like f. e. the fact that there was never a wasps nest or sign in front of her appartement) but so much more well written. It keeps contradicting itself and I love it
I can't relay how fucking happy I was when Jon started reading the Little Man who wasn't there. One of my favorite songs, (it has a rendition by Glen Miller that I listen to all the time), I fucking lost my shit. I wasn't expecting it and I about had a heart attack as I said it with him.
this episode is basically just your homie that dissociates a lot
I love Georgie and John's interactions so much. Georgie is simply gorgeous and it's really nice to hear John more... Personalised? Less removed paranoid Archivist and more a man in over his head. It's really nice to hear his humor and just him interacting with someone he's clearly comfortable with without any mistrust or fear
I had forgotten about this poem. Thank you for reminding me.
Jon's interactions with Georgie are so much fun! I already liked him a lot, but it's so nice to see this side of him outside of work and all that insanity.
this reminds me of this quote from the stanley parable, something about how real people make good choices and if you find yourself with a person who makes bad choices they most likely do not exist, and you should excuse yourself from the situation immediately. i don’t know exactly how they relate, but the vibes are similar.
2+2=Fish. I now will go iron my dog.
Oh, wait, was that dog my iron. Do I do that now.?
This is it. The best case so far. The writing is fantastic and holy shit, the whole thing is terrifying. This is exactly what I came here for. Guess I'm just a real sucker for cosmic horror and this is RIGHT on the money.
Thank you TMA!
I've spent the last week and a half binging episodes when I had some spare time. Safe to say I'm addicted. But this is the first time I'm commenting. But I had to because (a) this might be my favourite episode and (b) it's just so nice to hear Jon talking to someone normal about something normal! Ugh. My heart. I just want this for him so badly. Georgie is awesome. I love her. I really hope she doesn't die.
i love jon and georgie living together, the little bits of their interactions are so cute!
"ive been seeing lots of police cars recently" YEAH BC THEYRE AFTER YOU BUDDY
Statement is giving me the Prentiss statement and Insomnia statement vibes. First time listener so my theory right now is that Jon, Elias, Prentiss, Insomnia girl (cannot remember the name), this fella, and then maybe the Michaels are all connected together by being "picked" by those beings Jurgen mentioned. That makes me a little nervous for Jon's future given Prentiss, insomnia and this guy all seem relatively insane. However Elias seems to be doing fine besides the little bit of murder so maybe losing yourself isn't inevitable? I'm so curious
Got a little further and now I'm thinking of the soldier who lost the game to death. Maybe he's isn't related to the rest of the crew at all then
This is easily one of my favorite statements. Even after watching through to the end, having all the mysteries nearly wrapped up, this one remains just as surreal and mysterious.
It's Stranger and might be related to the statement of Breekon.
The title alone reminds me of an old poem..
Yesterday, upon the stair, I met a man who wasn't there. He wasn't there again today. I wish, I wish… he'd go away.
From Sapphire and Steel about a faceless man who could disappear into photos. The bastard got trapped in a circle of mirrors in the end. I still hate that creepy bastard
Edit: HOLY SHIT IT’S THE SAME POEM- I THOUGHT SAPPHIRE AND STEEL MADE IT UP- you do not understand how immediately horribly creepy this makes the statement for me.
I really like this one ngl
This reminds me of a song caled something glowing because one of the lines of the song is
"and though I can't quite perceive it
I can tell it's there
by the way it's not quite there"
"...looking death in the eye, and saying 'not today dude'"
top ten Jon quotes
As a person who lives less than 20 minutes away, I've never heard Antigonish pronounced that way. It's pronounced similar, just with a hard "anti". I love seeing (hearing) stuff about Nova Scotia in this podcast! adds an extra spook factor :)
TBH most of the stories I am mostly listening more for the archivists story than the statements, but damn i love the way this statement was written. It's sooo good. The writing is strange/cryptic while also being somehow understandable at least somewhat. I laughed at the bit "I was generally curious as to what this man had to offer me, when he didn’t even have enough wherewithal to exist." Also "The walls didn’t look like my house, because there weren’t any, so it was hard to tell what they did look like"
Another of these episodes where the horror of the situation is very vague and almost silly, but ungodly horrifying.
Well, there is an episode for every fear right? Altought I don't know anyone who is afraid of Schrödinger's cat....
But Schroedinger's cat is both alive and dead; this one is about someone who just doesn't exist :3
I remember that poem about the man on the stairs from childhood. It never frightened me, just irritated me-thought it was very silly. Had no idea about the story behind it or reason for the name.
Another relatable statement
Statement from this episode is definitely one of my favorite. I love how beautifully it's written, and the voice acting is especially good here. The confusing and abstract statements are always so much fun to listen to
This is for sure my favourite statement so far!
Honestly this is giving me “the unbirthday song” from Alice in Wonderland vibes
I have depression and often dissociate when anxious and depressed. this perfectly encapsulates what out of body dissociation feels like
i really really love this one. i've always liked that poem, and i adore the fact that it got turned into an episode. :D
Jon and Georgie sound so sane together? I don’t know about Georgie but Jon certainly sounds normalish when talking to her!!
