OMG by the end of this tutorial I had a model I thought would have taken me years of efforts to achieve! One of the best tutorials I’ve seen.
I just finished my sculpt following this tutorial and the gap between my old sculpts and the one I made with this tutorial is HUGE, it's clear from a distance the improvement in proportions and details, never ever a tutorial improved my skills like this, thank you for the third time!!
I’m a clay sculptor trying digital, this is the best head sculpture tutorial I’ve seen. Thanks so much Grant. You are so generous with your talent and knowledge.
I've never done anything with 3D (or any graphical technology outside of very minor Photoshop dabbling) until about one month ago. Out of nowhere, at almost 40, I'm suddenly addicted to learning Blender and devouring as much knowledge as I can from as many sources as I can find. Which takes us to the present, where I'm following along with this tutorial on my brand new XP-Pen Deco Pro and sipping coffee well past midnight, having so much fun I had to stop the learning and share. Thanks Grant. I'm a recent subscriber and already a big fan of your content.
keep going mate!
can't wait to try this out! love to see a long-form tutorial from you again. I'm sure they take a lot of effort to make, so it is greatly appreciated. big ups from NYC!
Don't know if you have tried this, but, in sculpt mode, you can turn on Dyntopo, set it where you want (or use the eyedropper to somewhat match a region), then "paint" the newly-chosen density on selected portions of the mesh using the Simplify brush. It's excellent for adding detail only where you want it (like the face can be higher res than the body of a figure, and the eye area can be higher yet). The simplify brush changes the shape of the mesh very little, so you can do this on a work in-progress. It tends to create artifacts when the transition is too severe, but you can paint in some transitional densities. Try it, it's worth it, and you're welcome to share this tip in a video if you care to.
Yes the technique I am using here is for the benefit of z brush users and other software
This is the best head tutorial I have ever seen! Thanks for sharing!
half of the people who explain things on youtube do so by explaining the right subject but in the wrong way. You are one of the few who do tutorials knowing the subject, and you make perfect tutorials. Well done.
Ive watched this several times and am absolutely stunned. Thanks for making it seem possible, time to try it out!
Another great video. I enjoy the way you break down the different parts of sculpting. I can see where I have gone wrong with many of my sculpts. In future projects I will use the steps you have explained here.
When I saw the thumbnail, I thought you'd used a lot of brushes, but you used only a few. Great result. The inverse crease brush was also a golden tip for me.
I found this video really helpful. I was having trouble figuring out any decent way to make the shapes and features of the face, trying to use a bunch of different brushes etc. This clarified the process a ton.
so simple yet i learned so much, thank you
Thanks for the tutorial, Grant! I love your videos! 🥰
This is a really good and easy to follow tutorial! Keep up your good work!
This one is so much useful tutorial! Grant, thanks a lot!
Best and easy to learn tutorial
It's always cool to learn different techniques in sculpting because I do it differently but it always looks like a stylized character. I have to try this!
Once again - Thank You! 🙂
This is a really good and easy to follow tutorial, Thank you very much!
First sculpting tutorial that is not 1 hour and a half long while explaining in details, really helped me to understand proportions better, the face bones and how to sculpt them, but specially the lips, it was my biggest weakness until now, thank you!
That image background really helps...!!! Thanks for this method!!!
This is probably the most useful proportions video I've watched. Or, if anything, it worked the best for me. Thanks, Grant! Would love to see more covering other areas of the body :)
Everyone doing sculpting should understand proportions properly. Excellent video!
At 1:54 your video goes crazy loud for a split second. Just letting ya know.
Love your content. Thanks for your work.
Thank you sir.. Blessed be you..
Positive attitude and determination saves the day.. Be determined to be positive.. Calm cool and relaxed is the key. Be grateful❤ always.. Thank you❤🌹🙏
Thanks for this. I have been having major issues with my head sculpts, couldnt work out why they sucked. These techniques have seriously improved my sculpts after a single attempt!
OMG bro I am having a lot of issue with proportions. Thank you for this video. Keep bringing such tutorial. Surely will help a lot of artists.
This is really awesome. I love It,,,
im so happy for this thank you
Lol, I was just retopping my head too. Thanks for another easy to understand tutorial.
Buenisimo! Muchas Gracias desde Argentina. Me sirvió mucho tu video para empezar a conocer las herramientas.
I love you, in the most holy way. I believe your heart is pure. I thank the heavens I came across you.
I've been hoping you would do a tutorial like this for a while, I've got some anatomy books, but I learn better through videos, will definitely be giving this a go later.
Trimakasih kakak,,, kamu adalah panutan saya master.
I finally discovered why my heads sculpts always looked so asian, 14:48 if you make the front of the eyes go past that line it starts looking asian, with this tutorial I noticed on my old sculpts the eyes were WAY past that line, something I never realised even while following other tutorials, and as I am a begginer it really blocked my learning of how to sculpt eyes, specially the upper and bottom eyelits, I can't thank you enough!!
best tutorial for beginners as they needs proportions
Thanks
The 6 eyeball tip is a good one!
Thank you very much❤
Awesome 🔥🔥
Awesome subject ^^ always so hard to model head.
Thanks you!!!!!
with grab sculpting function you can also use ctrl + mouse move, it tract/retract the area ( kinda along the normal). It can be usefull in some case ( for exemple you could have done the neck without masking )
interesting i'll have to give that a try - (edit) yes that's really useful :)
@@grabbitt ;)
I'm amazed how much detail just simple strokes of the crease brush adds. It's like some magic just draw the fucking owl shit that appears out of nowhere.
I noticed slight to minimum adjustments go a long way in detailing, especially for a start. I understand more detailing depends on more features of your character. This video here has given me a better way of starting any sculpture. Thanks .. You are blowing my mind right now LOLOLOL 👍
Great Abbitt O:)
with eyeball distance what i do is divide the head by 5 then scale down the eyeballs individually
personally i use Make Human to create Characters, because you can quickly get a base mesh with good topolgy and modify each part very quickly propotion wise, and its for free!
you still have to do some manual clean up for some things and create own textures for it...
Amazing tutorial! Could you do a small video on how do feminine proportions differ from those shown here? Thank you!
Yes I can
@@grabbitt Absolute legend
good
I wonder if it'd be possible to do an accurate portrait from a reference image based on one photo. I've been wanting to recreate a photo of Jim Morrison, but I can't find the best reference images to accurately get the head shape right
Thanks for this, Everytime I attempt sculpting a head, It always ended up looking like Voldemort 😂
That awesome🔥🔥🔥, now i need a female version dude👍, thank u for sharing ur experience/skills. Currently I trying sculpt in android via nomad sculpt but the details of face didn't go well as my expectation
See my recent video
👍👍👍
Will you be doing this kind of grid sculpting with the other parts of the body? This was real easy to follow for a beginner like me.
Interesting thought
amazing video. we re waiting for female version.
Already posted seen my recent video
Great tutorial, really clear and helpful. One question, you use the crease brush in reverse at points, how does this differe from using the pinch brush in thr effect it has? Thanks.
It's very similar but would out the mesh as well
@@grabbitt Thanks so much Grant. Really appreciated
How to open "scene collection"(on the right-hand side), unfortunately, I have closed that but now I don't know how to open it. can you please help?
I don’t know if I missed a part or something, I’ve gone back and rewatched it a couple times as well as the 2 minute image placement. How do you make the reference images only appear when you go into front or side view pressing 1 and 3? When you rotate out of that view they then disappear but the “hide” eye icon on that collection stays lit the whole time? I’m confused
A Ha! I found out how in object data properties:) Thank you for this great tutorial! I'm looking forward to following along with your others
great video, but what is up with the noise sound effects ??? 19:33 for example
Some strange rendering problems from Adobe premiere
Can you try to make a set of tutorials like the get good at blender // nodes 4 noobs but for sculpting? where we can have simple exercises to get better :D ? thanks for the great work
Already done. See my sculpting playlist
@@grabbitt didnt noticed it, cheers thanks for your reply! and just one more question do i need to be pro at drawing to sculpt with the tablet?
Is it long-term healthy to always be using that grid just to get the proportions and overall shape right, or will it put me in a comfort zone and stop me from getting the proportions right without a grid?
It should be fine and if you do it regularly then you will just start to not need it at some point
would you recommend VDM brushes for beginners or not?
yes but its also important to know how to sculpt the different aspects of the face for yourself so you understand hte proportions and how they work together
when smoothing the head by holding Shift and hovering the mouse over the object like you did (time 6:40), the smooth did not wok although i used the same radius and strength as you did. any suggestions. I am using blender 3.5.1. Many thanks.
It depends on how detailed your mesh is
@@grabbitt I fellow your steps.
Boa noite, não sei como funciona ativação de legenda mas se for possível por favor adicione ative legenda em indioma português, muito obrigada.
Do you use Wacom tablet or mouse for sculpting
A xp pen display tablet
Sorry this is off-topic, do you have advice for people that a partially color blind? I'm getting into graphic design and color is a big part of it. As a mild duetan, shading seems intimidating.
I've not had any experience in this area
Is it possible to adjust blenders grid size rather than bringing in the background image??
Yes
But you don't need to the image is the same as the grid
whens the next live stream ?
I have no plans for one currently
Sir how can i fixed that background as you done here...? I have import the image as the plane but that wont work even its only showing the grids on material and shader modes...but in those modes the x ray view of the object doesn't work...can you give me a simple guide .thanks
drag and drop them in
Yes sir...ive watched your video on the description..it was solved yesterday....thanks again...🤜🤛
can't get the reference image
Try a different browser or screen shot
i followed all your instructions but idk why i cant draw. using blender 3.0
edited: my blender looks weird, it only adds buldge when i select subtract likewise when i drag top to bottom the line project
not sure whats happening there. maybe reinstall
@@grabbitt it seems my object are too much at the bottom that is why its is done reverse
Me looking at my faces in the mirror........ Also me, you know what we need some references
How much hrs you work per day sir. Not necessary to answer but It will motivate me
It various a lot from day to day. Sometimes I go a couple of weeks without much practice
Just a reminder, head sculpts look like an alien 80% of the time spent sculpting it. Trust the process and just keep going. You got this! 0^0m
(80% is a made up number, but it’s still true. Even for professionals it still ALWAYS goes through an alien phase)
Thanks. This looks very generic for any type of character. I should sculpt more...

Don't know if you're really monitoring this comment section or anything, but for something like the example at around 10:45 it may be better to not use the only person of color thus far in conjunction with "how much neanderthal DNA" your character has.
I don't think its problematic, for 2 reasons. The first being there there is not a problem with someone having more Neanderthal DNA and secondly I don't think people of colour have more or less of that DNA strand but I could be wrong. Hopefully people can see the merits of the tutorial without worrying about these issues. But thanks for bringing it to my attention.
@@grabbitt I appreciate you taking the time to read and reply. I certainly see the merit of the tutorial regardless of the verbiage. Not necessarily saying it or you are problematic, it's just something I will admit I do listen for.
Nearly all tutorials I come across are structured around modeling European/Caucasian/White characters and characteristics. So as I follow along I have an extra step where I adapt and translate techniques to try to associate what I might see in the mirror as a "baseline" instead of a twist or derivation. So when I see a person of color represented, I pay more attention. I look for how professionals and those I look to for guidance are building frames of reference around an appearance like mine. When the pool of examples to draw from is so shallow, each individual bit of representation is thrown into much more stark contrast.
I'm not looking for censorship or editing or anything, just trying to provide some perspective from another angle without getting too far into the specifics.
I dont think that it is good idea to work with background images if you want to improve your art and eyes. Try to make 50 head from references. Dont put them in the background and you will be so good(not saying to grant abbit xD).
It's good to start like this to learn the basics then do exactly as you say when confident with the proportions
👍👍👍
