    Bravo, David! Your review is valued! ESPECIALLY thankful for your linux/FOSS/libre approach and applications. Your artwork is, of course, topshelf, but using all the linux tools to expand your realm into video here is further evidence of your professional skills. In addition, BIG thanks for your support of the DIGImend Project!!!
    Do you also have a promo code/link, for the Pro model of this tablet? The model which provides pen tilt input. Again, THANK YOU!!!

      @@DavidRevoy THANKS!! Just want to make sure, do your initial links for the M10K 2018 contain a referral code for you, that provide you with a modest commission? I don't think that the link that you provided me, in your reply to me, contain any referral ID in the URL. The link is strictly for the product only.

      @@bicicogito989 Don't worry. The links are a copy/paste of what they gave me. (probably they track the amount of click on it). I don't have any commercial relation with Gaomon (I just received a tablet for free to do the review; and it took me 3 days, for 60$ ... so, I do it because of Free Software advocacy and because the hardware is good and collaboration with Digimend something cool), I don't earn any money on what they sell, and they paid me 0 for this review. They can sell 0 or 1 million of unit; the same to me 😀

    To be honest the lightweight stylus are a selling point for me. I used to have a pentab with a stylus that uses a dedicated AA battery and it's top heavy and uncomfortable to use. Now I'm using a pentab with light stylus that are the same price as this Gaomon but mine were XP-Pen and it's been 3 years it's still works just fine even after I've dropped the stylus multiple times lol.

    • @DavidRevoy
      @DavidRevoy  2 года назад +6

      yes, during the unboxing the weight surprised me. It's really weird how my brain sort of thought "dangerous: it is lightweight so it is a cheap piece of plastic" while it was totally functional and comfortable after hours of painting. For sure lightweight is ok: I never complained about the weight of a pencil made of wood and it is even lighter! (and not talking about the weight of a real brush)

    Excellent review. It made me seriously start considering substituting my small wacom tablet (which has slightly frustrated for years because of its size) with this one since there is minimum linux support and the price is not as high as a medium intuos pro tablet here in Brazil.

    • @DavidRevoy
      @DavidRevoy  2 года назад +1

      Thank you. The tablet is still good here, even almost a year after. I'm not using it as a main; but as a second monitor now, mounted on a ergotron arm so I can easily switch position. The overlay sheet of this model is still a frustration: something smooth like that is not top comfort. My main tablet for the primary monitor is still my Intuos4XL (non display).

    Thank you for the great review. I actually bought this tablet about 8 months ago. I had a new laptop and was going to use it there. Then I came across a great sale on a Huion 24 pro 2.5K and bought it. So the gaomon tablet has been sitting on the shelf. I Will have to try it on my Linux system.

    One of the reason I stuck with Wacom, was bc there were so few people discussing them in the context of Linux and there were few opinions to be found. Thanks for linking to resources and reviewing products like this

    • @DavidRevoy
      @DavidRevoy  2 года назад +4

      Same, over the last 10 years; trying anything else than Wacom on Linux was risky; so I kept limiting my option to Wacom. With this reviews (the XPPen24Pro and this one) I'm slowly opening my possbilities to new brands.

    Merci tellement for this, David. I used to line-draw and always wanted to resume with a drawing pad like this. Given I have a house of Ubuntu I didn't want to throw away $. I installed Kira 4.0 to try it out, picked up a GAOMON M10K Pro, plugged it into my Ubuntu 18.04.6 LTS on an old Dell XP13 L322X Laptop, and it worked right out of the box. Thank you for your detailed reviews such as this one and inspiring my confidence to give it a try. I'll be attempting on Ubuntu 16 and Android. A bientot!!

      I can understand why, I really was surprised. I really think I'll no longer use my medium sized Intuos4 when I travel but this one now. Mainly because of the weight gain and being ultra thin because on the spec side; it's roughtly similar. That will lighten my travel bag.

      Exactly. I really wish oneof this brand will start producing very large non-display tablet. I'll try to suggest the idea to Gaomon. I really would like a model like this one , but with a 45cm or more width while keeping a high resolution and ultra thin.

    C'est la tablette que j'utilise depuis quelques mois et j'en suis très contente ! (mais c'est ma première acquisition, je ne peux pas comparer !)
    Le bouton en forme d'anneau, je l'utilise pour zoomer/dézoomer. Avec le raccourcis Espace pour le bouton situé juste en dessous, c'est une bonne combo je trouve. :)
    Et la partie basse du bouton du stylet pour transformer les brushes en gomme. (c'est le raccourcis E quoi...)

      Thanks! Yes. But at the same time, during the last 10 years the xsetwacom project kept saying to dev to not base GUI on their tool because they often broke the syntax by the past. Then they said xsetwacom would disapear when Wayland appeared years ago. All this context removed many motivations to make good GUI.
      Maybe one day, a good GUI will survive (and not be too wacom-centric). :-)

    Nice review! So the KDE Wacom GUI app doesn't detect this? Good to know. On Manjaro KDE, I just install the digimend drivers from the AUR, install the Wacom KDE GUI app, detect tablet, then reboot. I don't know if this is faster than whatever you did with the CLI, but messing with GUI is more familiar to me as a former Windows user, lol.
    Also, man, I have to thank you. Your art opened my eyes to FOSS apps back in the 2010s. I couldn't make the switch back then 'cause I needed to integrate to an Adobe pipeline in the studio I worked at, and also gaming on Linux wasn't as good as it is today. I'm so happy that I'm finally able to shift my work and gaming needs to Linux!

    • @DavidRevoy
      @DavidRevoy  2 года назад

      Hey! Thanks for the nice feedback. I should test more the KDE GUI for tablet; I think I met unsupported feature or bugs with the XPPEN24Pro and the Huion WH1409 so, I haven't even tested for this tablet. I'm also a bit sad about this GUI that is doesn't work for GNOME users or other D.E. It's a shame all D.E. tries to reinvent the wheel about it.
      That's a good news you can now have independency for your workflow and gaming!

    Very good video. I am new to linux and all this makes me dizzy, but I am making the effort because I am interested in learning. The Gaomon M10K is my first tablet and I had no idea how to make it work until I came across your video. But I have a couple of doubts: (1) where in the .sh file does it appear to edit the stylus buttons? I do not quite understand, and (2) in the part where it comes out to configure the buttons, how do I do to, instead of putting an individual button, put a combination of two buttons? for example: Control + space.

    • @DavidRevoy
      @DavidRevoy  2 года назад +1

      Hi! good questions and thanks for investing time. 1) The part to configure the stylus buttons is commented (lines start by #, under "# Stylus button:" remove the "#" at the beggining of the line) 2) for multiple key press (a modifier+a key) you can separate them by a space, eg: "key Ctrl z". But keep in mind "space" bar will not return a continuous key press of space. (that's something Krita simulate for the Ctrl+Space zoom). xsetwacom will enter a single "space" event. This one is a bummer since a long time xD Good luck with configuration. I'll edit the blog post to include the two info here.

    Thanks for sharing. But in the driver part after i make the ls im not seeing the 50-digimend.conf anywhere. It also tells me that micro is not a recognized command. Do you have any suggestions for me?

    • @DavidRevoy
      @DavidRevoy  11 месяцев назад

      Hi! Yes. At first, you need to use the X11 session (if you are on Wayland, this configuration will not be available, and Wayland is default on many distro now) . You can also find where your distribution put the X11 configuration; that's where the 50-digimend.conf is. Sometime they have different naming convention for the path.
      About micro, this is the text editor I use when I work with command line, you can install it with your package manager (it is simple and works with basic shortcut: ctrl+S to save, Ctrl+Q to exit, etc). You can also use other Command line editor for text (default is often 'nano' or 'vi' ). Good luck, and check the blog post, it contains probably more info.

    I already have this tablet and I love it! I was able to set up the ring (I love this "button" for zooming). But I coun't get the last button on the bottom to work. That's because the button in the ring is connected to the button below the ring in the driver. Don't know how to explain that better. (Oh and I don't have Linux) But overall, I really like this tablet. I just started drawing digitally and the price was perfect to start trying this medium out.

    • @DavidRevoy
      @DavidRevoy  2 года назад +1

      Hi, unfortunately Huion doesn't do much effort for Linux drivers. But here is what you can do to try to make it work. First, check if after installing the digimend driver; you can get something that works. Use the method I try for this tablet (the digimend deb package, the lsusb, the Identifier, the Xorg rules, etc...). If all of that fail, try to find on the issue bug tracker of the Digimend project someone with similar issue as yours. They might write workaround or tips. I'll have a quick look.

    • @DavidRevoy
      @DavidRevoy  2 года назад

      Hey Naomi, sorry for not mentionning it in the tutorial; I'll fix it. Yes, it is totally normal as the digimend rule is part of directory that modify your system. So, as a user, you are prompted to enter your system password. Here, I do that from a terminal with the software 'micro' (a text editor in the terminal , a bit more friendly than default 'nano') and I execute it as root user directly (it require password too). I hope it helps!

    I've had a Wacom Intuos3 6x8 for over a decade now. It still works fine, but the surface sheet is scratched up pretty badly, and replacements are hard to find since it's such an old product. I've been thinking about a replacement/upgrade. This one looks pretty good, but the lack of tilt and an eraser button is a bit unfortunate. But the pro version has tilt support. The choice paralysis...

    • @bicicogito989
      @bicicogito989 2 года назад

      Look at my comment above. The Pro model of this pad has pen tilt in it. It costs just $10 (with the Amzn promo) more than the model reviewed above. In a reply to me, David provides the link to this device. You could possibly (if you're linux savvy) program one of the buttons to go into some erase mode. I bet... have not looked into it yet. Good fortune!!

    • @DavidRevoy
      @DavidRevoy  2 года назад +2

      One option I suggest too: go to the Huion shop, and buy on it the large overlay-sheet of the WH-1409 tablet (check if the size matches; ideal should be the WH-1409 size to exceed yours) then you'll just need to cut it with scissors. The surface is black, but has same feeling of the Intuos3 series. I bought here a pack of 4 to save on the postal cost; and that's what I cut on all my old tablet (for a conservation effort) that's also what I use on my Intuos4XL as overlay sheet (I use a full one+a column of one to extend the area; I have a gap, but it matches the limit of my dockers on display, so I never draw over this gap.

      Hey, I talk about it on my review of the XPPEN 24 Pro ( here: ruclips.net/video/0QEnRWNIjtU/видео.html ). Sure, they propose a GUI and it's convenient at the first glance, but it is proprietary code; so not possible to see what is inside to fix or tweak it (eg. proprietary in my review had no Tilt support, and suffered also of other bugs) . Also impossible to know if it doesn't send the title name of windows selected as does the Wacom driver on Windows (src: robertheaton.com/2020/02/05/wacom-drawing-tablets-track-name-of-every-application-you-open/ ). I don't think it does, I haven't seen specific network traffic; but you get the issue.
      Making a proprietary driver on Linux is not a practise I favor (I had tons of issue in the past; canon driver, nvidia driver... ) And clearly, something a bit out of place compared to the philosophy of users on the platform, imo.
      What Gaomon did −even with just an implementation at deep level− feels the right way. It's a start, but a solid one. I wish the XPPen GUI was FLOSS; so it could be modified to support more tablet and become a bit more universal 😃
