Mark Carp I was fishing with Huyton DAA as a teenager and in them days we would get to a lot of different rivers, before the carp revolution of course. The ironic thing was that I got it trotting a float with maggot, not exactly how you would expect to catch a barbel now but welcome all the same. I wonder how many people catch barbel on the float, very rare I think. 👍
@@thinkFishcatchFish yes barbel on the float are a rare thing these days, I've got access to a few belting trotting swims but I must admit I'd much rather fish the feeder, I'm more of a specimen hunter too and the feeder beats trotting every time, less effort with the feeder too and that has an awful lot to do with it👍🎣😁
yep, there will be another barbel video in the summer Michael, i'll be doing the first few weeks on a carp water that still has a traditional close season but after that it's river time👍🎣
Interesting what you say about recycling gear - I have a GT3500 Aero Baitrunner from about 25 years ago. Originally bought for carping, I now use it for barbel/feeder fishing. It's just the job. I agree about Korum rods, too - I have the 1.5 t/c all-rounder, lovely rod, which I picked up for £40. Tight lines!
good stuff andy, the gt4500's in this video I bought in 1990 so they are 28 years old now...lol...no point in spending any more than you have too is there?. I've had these korum rods for a few years now and I really rate them, they have a lovely action and they are perfect for barbel and short range carp fishing, they double up as floater rods in the spring and summer👍
Yeah I live by Evesham so got a nice area to fish. Been catching mainly 5-7lb barbel but also get the odd 5-6lb bream and 2-3lb chub. Want a double figure barbel by the end of the year. Mate had a 18.2lb barbel 😤
5-7lb is the general size of fish in the severn ryan, they are great sport, although it's not my area i'm aware there are some very big barbel in the avon and it sounds like you live very close to barbel heaven😁lol. an 18 is not just a big barbel its bloody huge!, if you know where your mate was fishing you're half way there mate, just keep chipping away at it until it's your turn👍
yeah they do ryan, probably more so than in the day, I don't do nights myself but my sessions are always the last 4-5hrs of the day up until dark, the lads who do nights on the severn tell me it goes mad once darkness falls, i'm always on my way home then though😁
Nice one Mark, im an ex game fisher however too expensive for me now, had a bash last couple of years at Carp on commercials however thats not fishing its catching. So Barbel looks best bet for me, im a scouser so looks like the Ribble foe me. Severn looks interesting tho.
hi jay, i'm not one for commercials either mate, if you fished rivers as a game angler you might just take to barbel fishing👍 the ribble is a good barbel river and there's some decent fish in there, the severn is easier though, there's more barbel but a lower average size. Not long to go now either👍
Thank you so much mate, it can be frustrating when watching tutorials as they assume you already know the crack, ive been a sea angler boat and beach and rockhopping for 40 years now and only started freshwater 2 years back, couple yeads learning carp fishing, i sussed out pike fishing in no time and my very 1st session on the pike saw me a 21lber and an 11 :-) and now im desperate to net my 1st barbel and this video has given me the basics i need and i really cant thank you enough buddy, consider me sub'd and liked mate. Paddy
thanks for the kind words paddy, it's only the bare basics of barbel fishing but it's not that difficult, you know they'll be in those slow stretches somewhere and a bed of feed upstream of a snag or some streamer weed will draw them out eventually, if you're fishing the severn it can pay to stay an hour after dark if you haven't had any bites in the day, the barbel seem to come out of their hiding places after dark on the severn and it's very productive after sunset👍 nice pike by the way 👍
thanks paul, there is a follow up to this video on the way, I haven't quite finished filming it yet, hopefully it will be 'in the bag' sometime this week👍
Really enjoyed your video buddy.. thx for the tips.. I've only been bk fishing for 3 months up in Longridge Preston on the River Ribble.. unfortunately I'm still waiting to catch my first Barbel.. I've had plenty of Chubb tho.. biggest weighing in at 5.5lb 😁 Once again great video,I've also subscribed.. take care mate
A 5.5LB chub is a monster mate, some anglers will never see one that big!, if you're catching the chub then the barbel are sure to follow if you keep at it, I actually think the chub are harder to catch!👍🎣
@@jamesjeffrey1815 it is james, i have one for barbel, one for pva bag fishing, one for floater fishing and one for boilies as well as the barbel one, they are really handy👍
Thanks for the tips Mark. Never been barbel fishing and haven’t got a Scooby doo about how to fish for them. Intrigued as I hooked into a few small ones at my local carp pool yesterday and couldn’t believe they were giving a 14 elastic a good stretch and they were only about a 1lb in weight! Gonna give the Severn a go at Tewkesbury at the end of the month. What size hook do you go for and what hook length generally? Tight lines 🎣
hi rob, i usually use a size 10 hook like a drennan super specialist, my favourite hooklength is drennan supplex fluorocarbon in 8 or 10lb breaking strain, that might sound heavy but for a river barbel you'll need it👍
cheers andy, 30 years ago he was a legend, i'm not sure if he still fishes or even if he's still alive but his writings taught me a thing or two about catching barbel back in the day, I know the season is open but I haven't been on the river yet, the severn is usually a 'slow starter' so i'll probably wait until august before I have a go👍
Like so many of the legends Mark he/they through their writings and the occasional meeting taught so many of us, I certainly owe them a lot and that the reason why I try in my own little way to pass on some knowledge and put a bit back in to a sport that has given me so much.
completely agree with that andy, these anglers taught us a lot and you're absolutely right about passing on knowledge, and youtube is great for doing this👍
Great video Mark. Nice to hear Lymm and SAC get a mention. I'm a member of both and bailiff the Lymm Atcham section further down stream from the Church. I think the section you are at in this video, just below Atcham bridge by the Mytton & Mermaid is Prince Albert - Salmon only. A shame because, as you say, looks perfect Barbel water. I do believe you can coarse fish from the Pub garden if you're staying there :-)
hi john, yes the section below the bridge is pa-salmon only, it's only in the film because it was easy access from the bridge and I use the shallow water below the bridge to mark the start/end of some good sections of river, it's just in there to cover some very basic barbel location, it's not where i'm actually fishing though, having been a blogger and youtuber for a while now I've learned to protect my swims so as far as where i'm actually fishing goes, it's a bit of a red herring if you know what I mean👍😉😄
Nice video mark, very informative!, cant beat shimano reels and certainly with you on recycling reels, my pike reels have taken battering on the bail arm, still great and now loaded with mono for feeder fishing. nice barbel mate, well done top vid ;-)
cheers danny 👍 fishing is getting to be an expensive hobby these days so it's good to cut costs wherever you can, despite re-cycling my fishing gear i reckon i still spend far too much on our hobby...lol🎣
yes mark, same here too much lol, but we neeeed it haha. joking aside we do live in silly times but i guess while people are willing to buy a barbel rod, a tench rod, a bream etc when in reality a 1.75lb barbel rod makes a fantastic tench rod, then things wont change
that was my thinking behind the twin tips in the video danny, the 2.2lb for barbel and floater/stalking carp and the 1.75lb for tench or bream, you can literally cover everything in specialist angling with them and for a twin tip they are a bit of a bargain...and we all like our value for money, not that i'm tight or anything 👍lol
cheers carl, I've only covered the very basics but hopefully it will be enough to encourage people to have a go for barbel, its great fishing and doesn't require an overnight stay so i reckon it's perfect for anglers with limited time and family commitments👍
Great video mate I like your vids I’m from Shrewsbury always wanted to fish Atcham bridge how do I contact lim fishing club I can’t find a number for them cheers
hi john, the trent isn't my neck of the woods so i've never fished it mate, if i had the chance to fish the weirs i'd start in the weir myself then move below if no bites are forthcoming, they'll be in one place or the other and the reason i'd start in the weir is for the oxygenated water. you have a fantastic opportunity there, good luck mate👍
I stopped using hemp after the price went up a lot a few years ago stu, I've noticed it's starting to come back down but I haven't started buying it again yet, I might just get some and start adding it to my feeder mix again👍 Not sure I could go that small with my baits in summer though?, there was an awful lot of minnows, chublets, dace and small roach in my swim along with a resident pike that was having it's fill of them, I reckon they'd completely muller a hemp and caster approach. I spent most of my session picking out the bigger pellets and making sure a few of them went in the feeder and in the groundbait balls, just because it gave me confidence there would actually be something left for the barbel after longer than a few minutes😉
that's what I used to do but it went up to over £50 a sack at one point stu, I stopped buying it but mates tell me its fallen back quite a bit, so easy to prepare too, which gives me an idea for a future video👍
yeah there is a new lure fishing video on the way, it's still in the planning stages at the moment and i'm still fishing hard for carp so it's a few months away at least😉

@@MarkCarp hi thanks for the reply mark and well done on a great beginners guide to barbel fishing. Ive just looked up on the savage gear net. Is it the large or extra large you use?
I have the extra large because it doubles up for my predator fishing, it's big enough for big pike so probably too big for barbel but it saves me having to buy another👍
