I don't think any gun should be taken to the range before cleaning and oiling the firearm. I know a lot of people do but I always clean and lube a new firearm before I fire it and I have good results. Thanks for the video.

@@vic2796 that is fine but if I ever were to purchase a Glock I would not feel comfortable taking a new firearm to the range without a clean and lube. I'm sorry but I do not believe that is a good recommendation from Glock.

@@keithtate1241 it is important for the reliability of some firearms. Glock uses antisieze which is a mild abrasive to lubricate from the factory. It completes the final honing of the metal on metal parts, knocking off any burrs etc. Almost all these polymer guns use stamped parts inset into polymer and the wear surfaces need to be smoothed out for reliability. I've now got two shooting sessions with my new S&W M&P 10mm M2.0 4.6" pistol. Both sessions were after I had thoroughly cleaned and lubricated my pistol.
During my first session I fired a total of 296 rounds of 10mm ammo, with a healthy mix of using the M&P stock steel guide rod and captured recoil spring assembly, and a Wolff Gunsprings steel guide rod and 24-pound uncaptured recoil spring set. I was shooting 216 rounds of Remington UMC 10mm 180 Gr FN FMJ range ammo (1,150 FPS with 528 FtLBs of muzzle energy); 40 rounds of Underwood 10mm NOSLER 180 Gr JHP (1,250 FPS w/ 625 FtLBs of muzzle energy); 40 rounds of Underwood 10mm 200 Gr FN Hi-Tek Coated HCL (1,250 FPS w/ 694 FtLBs of muzzle energy).
I had 1 malfunction, a FTF, while shooting Underwood 10mm 200 Gr FN Hi-Tek Coated HCL ammo, with the M&P stock guide rod and recoil spring assembly. My M&P functioned flawlessly with all the other 295 rounds fired on day one.
I used only the Wolff guide rod and uncaptured 24-LBs spring during my second shooting session, which included 100 more rounds of the same Remington UMC range ammo, 20 more rounds of the Underwood 180 Gr Nosler defensive ammo, and 20 more rounds of Underwood 200 Gr FN HCL hunting ammo. I shot two-handed, strong hand only, and weak hand only, with all three loads, as well as rapid-fire 15+1 strings with each of these three loads, with zero malfunctions of any kind.
So after a grand total of 436 rounds to date, I've experienced just that one malfunction with the stock spring and 200 Gr FN HCL hunting ammo.
I love the M&P M2.0 ergonomics, but I really dislike the new style M&P trigger. However, I have a fix coming in the mail for this.
I'm looking forward to trying out some Underwood 10mm 140 Gr Extreme Defender, and 220 Gr FN HCL ammo next, once my order from Underwood arrives. I should have both my forthcoming Apex Duty / Carry trigger, and Trijicon Bright & Tough tritium night sights installed before then.
    Good things! 👍

I just picked up this 10mm in the 4" barrel, no thumb safety. I have a little less than 100 rounds through it but so far I love it. I cleaned and lubed it before I took it out the first time, which I think is a must with any gun. I had one failure to feed on my very first shot but I am 99% certain I limp wristed it. After I clamped down on it, it ran like a champ. No problems after that. Used sellier and bellot 180gr FMJ. Fits in my hand extremely well as all my M&Ps do. weight is great and I think helps to reduce recoil, which also i very manageable. Great review, solid info!

I really think all this needs is a heavier recoil spring and possibly mag springs. Only issues I had so far were with 220g underwood. Underwood 140g extreme penetrators worked fine. All other 10mm loads have worked but they were all weaker 10mm. Got some federal HST 200g I still need to try. Wolff is working on some heavy recoil springs so it’s just a waiting game.

Great review. I almost got one a week ago, but the 4” model. I have you seen any of Turkey opinion reviews? Funny enough, he had real problems with full power loads as have other reviewers so he ended up going with the Springfield then the Springfield just broke on him 🤷‍♂️. Also for what it’s worth, I wrote apex tactical if their M&P 2.0 triggers would work in this and they wrote me back saying they wouldn’t. I figured I’d wait till we get a performance center line of this for a better trigger and smith fixed the issues with high power loads that so many are saying doesn’t work in this yet.

  • @Timberwars
    @Timberwars Год назад

Thanks for a good discussion of the pistol.
The weapon has a very high front sight blade and rear sight notch. What holster do you use that allows you to draw without hanging up on that tall front blade? You mentioned 180 gr cartridges for range shooting. What ammunition do you plan to use for bear stoppers when you wear the weapon in the woods or around cabin & camp?
Also, how do you expect to carry this pistol in bear country? I have a chest holster from Crossbreed. I really like the chest position for year round carry. I can access the weapon easily in typical winter weather in the mountains of the PNW when my coat is open to only half zipped. My chest carry holster will also work well in warm weather over a light shirt.

4.6 in barrel version m&p 10mm. Does it matter which gun oil to use and how much to use from getco. Which spring to replace the factory one and would getting different spring in the gun magazine will make any difference. All details are greatly appreciated. Which iwb holster would work great for the 4.6 in barrel version.

I bought and modified a Glock 20 Gen 4 pistol & am keeping this one. I changed the dangerous factory unsupported barrel after watching Chuke's Glock 20 video with a KKM threaded barrel as per his recommendation, replaced the factory connector with a -3.0 connector, polished the trigger parts as per the .25 cent Glock trigger video, & now after $400 plus of aftermarket parts I feel I have a safe gun with a well tuned 3.5 lb. smooth trigger pull (for a Glock). Talon grips fixed the slippery Glock grip. I had a problem with a poor slide release spring causing the slide to lock back after every round shot. After re-stretching the spring I haven't had any problems with light, medium, or the heavy Underwood 220 gr. hard cast rounds. I don't have to lube the gun for reliability although I do for the longevity of the gun. I am very happy with the gun now. As reliability is #1, I feel no need to downgrade to an unreliable pistol that has to have lubrication to work properly that kicks more, weighs about the same & has the same footprint. The extra kick of the S&W is most likely due to the upper part of the backside of the grip being narrower than the Glock. I also have a beautiful Springfield Ronin Elite 10mm 1911 (also extremely reliable) that weighs 10 oz. more than the Glock but has more felt recoil because it is thinner and also being of metal does not absorb the shock like polymer does. A noticeable difference! If I couldn't take the lightweight Glock into the field, I would take the heavier Springfield 1911 10mm as it shoots more accurately with fiber optic sights and a 4 lb. 1911 trigger.

    • @LWRoad
      @LWRoad  2 года назад

I've heard of alot of feeding issues with this model, but luckily i have not had 1. Anything over 200gr. In a compact polymer pistol @ 1200fps is hard on it... fun fact the caliber (pistol) that most bear have been killed with, in a defensive situation is ...........9mm!

I too bought into the idea of replacing my 44 mag for bear protection with a 10mm. So I got one of these with the four inch barrel. The first night I shot 40 rounds of Blazer 180 gr bullets with no problems, but 10 rounds of Buffalo Bore 220 gr. With the Buffalo Bore I had one case of it not going into battery. Last night I shot 13 rounds of 220 gr Buffalo Bore: two failed to feed and two failed to go into battery. With 20 rounds of Grizzly 220 gr lead cast bullets, four failed to feed and I had one light strike. Then I tried five rounds of off brand 200 gr hard cast bullets that are supposed to go 1200 fps. Here I had two light strikes. Finally, I shot 15 rounds of 180 gr Blazer range ammo again with no problems. Smith and Wesson wants me to send the gun back, which I will do. Right now mine is certainly not ready to carry where bears could be a threat-which is my only purpose for buying this gun.

I think the M&P 2.0 is a really sharp looking piece. The armornite finish is outstanding, par with Glock’s Gen5 NDLC and Sig Nitron. Also, Smith is more serious about stock dot ready guns, including all plates and tall sights right in the box. I also prefer the full 4.6” version of this 10mm. Looks “complete.” Compacts look bobbed or incomplete to me. Says me.

I am curious to see how long it takes for magazines and parts to reach the market. I like to have at least half a dozen magazines for all my firearms with detachable magazines, so that is a big issue for me. I am hesitant to buy something I know I can't even find spare magazines for. And with reports of issues coming from some with the M&P 10mm, esp concerning full power ammunition, I am interested to know how long it is going to take S&W and others to step up with increased power recoil assemblies. A 20 or 22 pound recoil spring would probably solve most of the functional issues with the M&P 10mm and full power loads, if one could be found for the pistol.

The m&p frames seem to offer the best polymer that I've come across. The frames just feel and look ultra durable. Even the ez 380 my wife has seems top notch. The only thing I don't like is the models that don't have a manual safety have that small block of polymer where the manual safety would be and it looks pretty bad.

@@LWRoad Oh I bought a 1076 s&w 10mm in 1995, I saw it at a gun show at the Collinsville community center. Back then gun shows around St. Louis, MO., whether in MO or IL, you could attend the gun shows, be a vendor, and sell to MO or IL residents with the proper id, ammo, reloading components, that kind of stuff, and if an IL, dealer sold you a MO, resident and you showed him your valid driver license, you didn't have to pay sales tax, and vice versus for IL., residents with MO vendors, but not with the actual purchase of a firearm, you had to buy from the dealer from the state you lived in at the gun show. I saw this 1076 model 10mm at Hugh's display asked about and asked for his card. I bought stuff from IL vendors, showed them my valid MO drivers license and paid for it with no IL sales tax. I called Hugh a day or 2 later, his wife said he had gone out west for gun shows and I said I wanted to buy the 1076 fbi 10mm that I talked to him at the gun show. She said oh ok, Hugh said only 1 person talked to him about that 10mm pistol and he didn't think he could sell due to lack of interest. Boy times have changed, I got that gun for 550.00 and it had nite sites.

I purchased the Wolff Gunsprings steel guide rod and uncaptured 24-pound recoil spring set (#54624 for $30, plus S&H). It's made for the S&W M&P 45 ACP full size pistol (4.6" barrel). The M&P 45 ACP and new 10mm are virtually identical in their exterior dimensions, both have 4.6" barrels, and they use the same length guide rod and recoil spring assemblies ( 3-5/8" ).
The M&P 9 and 40 M2.0 full size pistols have 4.25" barrels, or else 5" barrels in the "long slide" versions. The 4.25" and 5" 9mm and 40 S&W barreled pistols use the same length stock guide rod & captured recoil spring assemblies ( 3-1/4" ). The full size 10mm and 45 ACP 4.6" pistols use 3/8" longer guide rods than the full size 9mm and 40 S&W 4.25" and 5" pistols. At least that's how it is in my M&P M2.0 pistols.
I've got hundreds of 10mm rounds fired through mine without any malfunctions whatsoever, using the Wolff guide rod and uncaptured 24-pound recoil spring set (#54624).

I brought 100 rounds of 200 grain ammo with me and it was having a very hard time feeding in a new round. I would have to tap the back of the slide or drop the mag, clear it and reload sometimes having a malfunction not feeding in a new round at that point. I made sure I didn't limp wrist the firearm so that couldn't be the problem. I was rather disappointed having no less than 30 jams within the first 100 rounds. I only had 200 grain ammo that day and plan on trying with 180 to see if it's any better which j am really hoping it is. Any advise or thoughts on why this might have been happening. Hardly bear defense worthy!
Mine failed to chamber round 1-2 times per magazine, all types of ammo. Then with Underwood ammo dropped the magazine every shot! When I called S&W the turn around time was 5-6 weeks and they gave me no assurance that they had a fix for these problems. What was even more shocking was that the CUSTOMER SERVICE Rep. talked over the top of me and eventually raised her voice at me when I asked for a refund, since she could not assure me that the gun would be fixed in 6 weeks. Given this situation, 2 weeks after buying the Smith, I traded that POS in on A G20 and lost $300. Since S&W was of no help, my only recourse is to share this experience with as many people as I can.

My S&W M&P 10mm M2.0 4.6" pistol range update for Saturday, Sept. 30, 2023, testing my new magazine extensions from Floyd's Custom Shop, Inc. (located in Blanchard, ID). These extensions give me 2 x 16 round mags and 1 x 20 round mag of 10mm Auto ammo.
I ran 280 rounds of 10mm Auto ammo through my pistol today, bringing my grand total round-count of 10mm Auto ammo to 2,101. I experienced three near FTF jams with one specific type of ammo. I say "near" because ultimately these three rounds did feed on their own, but they did not go smoothly into battery (more on this, below). I put the following rounds of 10mm Auto ammo down range today:
    1. Steinel Ammo 180 Gr FN FMJ × 100 rounds (1,140 FPS MV; 519 FtLbs ME). Clean, accurate, soft-shooting, low-powered for 10mm Auto, flawless operation.
    2. Underwood Ammo Range Supply 180 Gr FN FMJ x 50 rounds (1,250 FPS MV; 624 FtLbs ME). Clean, very accurate, potent, moderately-powered 10mm Auto, flawless operation.
    3. "'Blemished' on sale" SIG Sauer Elite Ball 180 Gr FMJ x 50 rounds (1,250 FPS MV; 624 FtLbs ME). Clean, accurate, potent, moderately-powered 10mm Auto, three near FTF jams. I could feel my pistol almost choke on three of these rounds, rather than smoothly slam into battery, but these three rounds did feed on their own without any added input from me. Post-firing, I examinded the cases and found slight barrel-like bulging, and micro-fracturing, around the central and top areas of these cases. SIG did post a warning that this "blemished" ammo might not be totally reliable... but it was on sale at a pretty big discount. Buyer beware - scrutinize each of these cartridges before attempting to fire them.
    4. Underwood Ammo 180 Gr Hornady XTP JHP x 20 rounds (1,300 FPS MV; 675 FtLbs MV). Clean, very accurate, potent, moderately high-powered 10mm Auto, flawless operation.
    5. Underwood Ammo 155 Gr Hornady XTP JHP x 20 rounds (1,500 FPS MV; 774 FtLbs MV). Clean, very accurate, very potent, full-powered 10mm Auto, flawless operation.
    6. Underwood Ammo 200 Gr FN HCL x 20 rounds (1,250 FPS MV; 694 FtLbs MV). Smokey, very accurate, very potent, high-powered 10mm Auto, flawless operation. No uncommanded magazine drops.
    7. Underwood Ammo 220 Gr FN HCL x 20 rounds (1,200 FPS MV; 703 FtLbs MV). Smokey, very accurate, very potent, high-powered 10mm Auto, flawless operation. No uncommanded magazine drops.
So my M&P 10mm Auto pistol has gone 2,100 for 2,101 (99.952% reliable), and has functioned 100% flawlessly since investing $46 in upgrading the stock 17# RSA and the stock mag springs in my two original magazines back in late May 2022. This is a very reliable, very ergonomic, very easy pistol to shoot well.
    Good things! 👍
