Toyota HiLux 2021 review: Updated Ford Ranger ute rival tested!

  • The time is now. Well, maybe you could argue that some of these changes could have come sooner, but the 2021 Toyota HiLux is here, and plenty of amendments and adjustments have been made.
The revised and revamped 2021 HiLux has seen a number of visual changes for some variants, while inside there’s new technology that brings the Toyota ute up to standard against its contemporaries. Yes, it finally has Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, volume and tuning knobs on the touchscreen and a digital speedo.
That’s just the start, though. Toyota Australia says the new HiLux has been thoroughly reworked to offer a more comfortable drive experience, not to mention the 2.8-litre automatic versions copping a welcome upgrade to power and torque.
With the Ford Ranger constantly treading on the tail of the HiLux, and an all-new D-Max from Isuzu just launched - soon to be followed by a new Mazda BT-50 - has Toyota done enough to remain on top of the relevance list, and the shopping list?
Want to find out about specific things on the HiLux? Here are the timecodes:

Bought one of these today haven't got it yet, but going on the 2017 model, the suspension was bone crunching at the start. Took about a month to settle and it was great after that. So for anyone that hasn't experienced it for yourself take it from me, take what is said about ride quality with a grain of salt, presumably this guy is driving a brand new ute

Still driving a 2012 4x4 dual cab SR5 and never a problem but my only beef is that it’s a bit harsh in the suspension which is not good over a long distance. The extra punch from the motor should be good but I think it’s high time they did something resulting in a smoother ride. Having said that - just anyone try and take it from me!

Was hoping for reviews on acceleration and engine noise vis a vis the outgoing model given that power boost is the only real change added to 2021 hilux. Cosmetic changes are too small/minor to be noticed by most people and hence they dont make the new hilux look much different..

I drove the new one against a late 2019 SR5 on the day we tested it, and the acceleration was noticeably better. Just more linear and with a bit more mid-range urge. Noise? Not much difference.

The design upgrades are certainly an improvement over the model it replaces. Mat’s review on the ride still being firm without a load in the back still makes me think my Wildtrack and others in this class are a better ride unladen than the Toyota which in my case (and I’m sure for many other new generation Ute owners) is most of the time.
As with all new Toyota’s the recent price hikes are a bit harsh especially with the SR5 + (not even a boot liner as standard!), so I wonder how long it will take Toyota to start doing drive away deals?
However overall I’m certain the new HILux will certainly ramp up the competition in the Ute market.

HiLux great vehicle - However here is a review of a Toyota Dealer ...... I recently went to purchase a Toyota Hilux at Bathurst Toyota. A day later I was informed that unfortunately my employment contract wasn't to be renewed due to the slow down in the economy as a result of the resent health pandemic. I was there therefore unable to proceed with the purchase. I told the dealer straight away via both phone and email that I would not be able to proceed with the purchase and that I would not in fact pass any finance check as I was now unemployed. Finance had not been arranged through Toyota finance nor had the vehicle been ordered. The dealer took 8 DAYS to get back to me and I was informed that they could keep my $2,000 deposit as I had "interim" finance through the dealer (a joke) In the end they kept $1000. They did say I would get this back if I purchased a vehicle from them but then I would have to go through "finance" again. I have spoken to Toyota head office in Melbourne who were very helpful and did contact the dealer on my behalf however they were told the dealer intended to keep the deposit as i had a signed contract (and interim finance) and therefore could not help me. So in the mist of a pandemic, when people are losing there jobs and facing tough financial situations these people took 8 days to even return my call and decided that $1000 was more important to them (probably meant someone got there commission) than returning it and waiting for a future sales opportunity from me. The Hilux itself is a great vehicle however I would never ever purchase from Bathurst Toyota. There are more reputable dealers out there who put customers first.

I guess the majority of private an companies still have faith in the reputation as the Hilux still out sells all vehicles in Australia an with the recent upgrades Toyota have probably done enough to keep it that way for sometime.
