Its one of the best nature/wild animal documentaries Ive ever seen. And the best part is they simply let the chimps tell the story themselves without getting into any politics of it, ethics, didactic preaching, or intrusive narratives. The producers had the self-control to step back and not interject themselves into this documentary. Its a story told by the chimps themselves and the arc goes where the chimps take it, not where some calculated director from Hollywood manipulates it to go.

Actually, I think that human violence is a large part of the reason that we developed as a species. We needed good communication and organizational skills to defend our group against other groups. We needed to develop technologies to fight with (which could be also used for domestic purposes). Even modern warfare has greatly influenced trauma medicine, as we learned things during the Korean and Vietnam war about vascular surgery (to repair limb trauma from wounded soldiers) that we would not have learned if we were a peaceful, passive species.

    • @mrmr2488

It seems to me the issue we are running into is that we are basically chimps with total self awareness, abstraction and self consciousness. We can abstractly look at how we are acting and try to change that. The problem that arises is that we have put so much effort into distancing ourselves from our animalistic natures , that our instincts are fighting against it. I think we should live in a balance. A mature acceptance of violence and how to use it. How to co exist with nature without destroying it. These are just a couple of examples. We need to stop trying to move so far away from what we actually are. Instead we are trying to move closer to what we are not because we think of ourselves as something better than these chimps. It hurts our ego to accept we are nothing more than animals.

I feel just as bad when it's chimps hunting monkeys as I do when it's chimps warring with one another. I also root for the seal vs the orca or the polar bear. Have you ever seen a weasel take out a hare? There's a YT clip of weasel taking on a monkey many times its size. That monkey didn't stand a chance, from the minute it was in the weasel's crosshairs. No, I always root for the prey as an observer. I only root for the hunter when I'M the hunter. I'm a total hypocrite. But at least I thank and praise my quarry. I'm kind of primitive that way.
