      How do I find a good therapist
      My psychiatrist cut me off when talking to him when I told him my anxiety got so bad I had to take 4 klonopins instead of 2 and it still did nothing he started screaming at me saying that’s not his fault I used more than prescribed..
      I couldn’t even make a complaint the office didn’t let me
      My question.. how do I find a good therapist and psychiatrist that genuinely care
      I also wanted to change my anti-depression med
      He didn’t give me a chance to talk to him
      He just refills my medicine and hangs up usually :(
      Edit:my anxiety is so bad I almost feel like I have to run or jump out of a car
      I feel my actual heart beating and I have to pray and run back and forth and Idk what to do Dr.
      I even have to take a bucket with me just incase my anxiety gets so bad I needa use the restroom on trips

      I like the site psychologytoday.com. People have profiles that you can read and get a sense of what they are like. You could also see if you know anyone who could give you a personal referral. Your primary care doc may know someone to recommend.

      Is it weird that trying to learn a musical instrument or these brain jogging games end up making me really dizzy and lethargic and unable to do things afterwards?

      I am a classically trained musician. I can only play an instrument I never took seriously in a relaxed way. The solution for performance anxiety for us is in the type of preparation we do. The actual playing can make us more anxious if we are looking for the negative, and no performance is perfect.

      Dr. Tracey, this is so helpful, If I could ask you, why do I feel like I have lost my working memory power because of my anxiety and depressionc and if there are games or tasks, activities to restart or help those processes.
      This would be great. My therapist and psychiatrist cant seem to understand the complexity of my case.

      Really appreciate it too. I hurt my ears several years ago now and I have to switch to captions to hear sometimes, which some creators don't use.

    She's very anxious as a child - uses math problems to relax - gets good at it and becomes a successful engineer - now she's more anxious due to her perfectionism. She's me. I'm her.

    I can’t tell whether I have situational anxiety and my life is just one long situation - or generalized anxiety due to attentional deficits. Probably both.

      If you are diagnosed with adhd GAD or general anxiety disorder comes with it. If it’s situational it probably just happens well, in situations.

      I feel you! I think because of the fallout due to anxiety (and ADHD?) it creates a life where we are more sensitive to events that other people just “handle,” and our “episodes” can make life feel like walking through mud because everything else falls behind. That’s how I feel at least.

      GAD if I were to guess. Am a psychologist, but not a clinician, but teach abnormal psychology and clinical and counseling. GAD is incredibly difficult to treat. CBT helps with the right therapist. I have anxiety and CPTSD so I'm empathetic.

    That hit me hard. I feel like collapsing due to this anxiety. I was once a topper of school and college. And now i can't even sit and study with focus for like 10 mins. It hurts where I'm going

    I love how Dr. Marks can talk about anxiety and other potentially triggering topics but in a very calm way that I am actually relaxed even though the topic is about anxiety. Sometimes I put her videos on before going to sleep, because I feel like she is telling me, “That’s alright. I know what you’re going through and I got you.”

      Me too. Plus my Roomba is running and coming in and out of the room which is a big distraction. I even worry about worrying. No problems sleeping other than bad dreams.

      I believe her delivery is giving people anxiety. It builds up when i hear her talking and when i change to something else it goes down... Watch another video about it made me feel different

    This is me been a constant worrier since a young child. Can't sleep for worrying sometimes especially since losing my job through virus.🤔 God yes that's me when I'm out with friends i can't listen and enjoy i think of my worry!

    As someone who just started going to a psychologist in my 30's, and have yet to work on the aftermath of the trauma I experienced from my childhood until my mid 20's, this video has helped me immensely to validate my symptoms and to even put a tentative name to them. I was holding my tears by half of the video. Thank you for such a instructive explanation.

    Dr. Marks, I have been in treatment for traumatic brain injuries and PTSD for over 7 years. I have been drugged insensible, lost years of my life in the process. What I have learned from you in a few short videos is 10 times more information than I got from all of the shrinks and counselors previously. Following your suggestions about stomach health, dietary change, has helped more than every other attempt at therapy thus far. Thank you and God bless. I wish you were close enough to see as a patient, good mental health practitioners are like hens teeth! One bright, compassionate practitioner like yourself does more for civil rights in this country than 10,000 people marching on Washington. Drive on....

    so so so so true. i play this game called “the gardens between” a really beautiful puzzle game with a storyline and wonderful graphics.” anytime i feel panic coming, i whip out the game and it slips me right out of it.

    Great video! Could you do a video on ways to handle lockdown? It has all been so much: cabin fever, seasonal affective disorder, the holidays, the election, the sickness and death have all been overwhelming for a lot of us.

    Years ago I was seriously depressed from my mum dying. I wore black for three years and I isolated from every person I knew. I couldn't access anything that wasn't the grief. Towards the end of the mourning period I started quietly playing brain games. A company sent me a link and it was a quiet way to pass the time. I started to remember things that I enjoyed like experiences or things I found funny. I felt like a part of me that had shut down came flooding back. I thought it was instrumental in getting over the grief. I don't mean that's what someone should do if they're grieving by the way, but I was actually stuck in extreme grief. I didn't intend for it to happen either. I just played the game almost mindlessly.

    Thank you so much for this video. I only recently learned about this theory and it makes so much sense with the type of depression in my family. I struggle terribly with memory and concentrations, making tasks harder and harder for me to start or complete. I find I can no longer learn as quickly and I get bored very fast. This means I'm just in a constant state of immobility, which then causes the anxiety and depression. I see everyone around me functioning so well, and I just...can't do it.
    One quick story that helps me believe in this theory: I once tried to show my grandmother how to use a simple tape recorder to help her remember her doctors' instructions. It only had 4 buttons: play, stop, record and fast forward. I showed her over and over and she just couldn't get it. Then she looked at me and said "I think I just don't care". It broke my heart at the time, and frustrated me even more. Now though, after learning just about everyone in my family has some form of ADD/ADHD, plus the anxiety and depression, it makes complete sense. Her attention just wasn't there, so she didn't care, which then made her quite sad.
    I feel like this was the key that helped unlock my own issues and helped me understand my grandmother. Thank you for helping to explain it further here, and for the Cognifit shoutout! I just signed up and will start playing with it.

    Die hard gamer and despite my anxiety and depression, I am one of the top performers in the organization I work for. Gaming has helped me to focus on work objective without attending to my anxiety.

    I have a topic suggestion: the effect of menopause on pre-existing conditions, medication, and undiagnosed conditions. I am trying to find a doctor for adult ADHD in a city where the doctors don't believe in that. My PCP prescribed prayer for my depressive symptoms, then when I said I was afraid I would be fired, he told me to pray for my boss. I received a final warning at work for my impulsivity, and that finally got his attention -- he prescribed Buspirone as an add-on to the Effexor. I have probably had ADHD all my life (born in 1958 -- 13 years before it was a diagnosis!), but work stress (no longer doing the job I trained for in 1982, in which my ADHD was a superpower), grief (my mom died recently), and as it turns out, not having enough estrogen, have exacerbated it. Your ADHD videos have really helped me. I'm not hopeful of getting a stimulant from an online provider, and finding a new doctor during a pandemic isn't going to be easy. Anywho, I know how to research reliable publications and had to diagnose myself, and then educate my therapist (who now agrees), and meanwhile my life has been falling apart. If you could address this issue, you could save a lot of women from needless suffering.

    I have so much incredible respect for these videos Dr. Tracy Marks puts out. They are not clinical treatments for the issues a lot of are facing, but the insight they provide and understanding of whats going on is sometimes all we need in that moment. I myself, know now just from watching this that Im one of those kids who suffered with excessive worry from a young age. Even when I was only about 7 - 8 years old I used to worry about my parents bills and things a typical 7 year old shouldn't be worried about. Ive been through one hell of a ride with GAD and panic attacks in my life thus far, but these videos and the information we are learning together and discovering are incredibly powerful and important. Highest level of gratitude to Tracy and these videos. Thank you!

    I am so happy I found this channel. I have an avoidant personality disorder, which is not a disease, but still the anxiety significantly reduced my quality of life. And even though I'm taking escitalopram and lamotrigin - i did do too well on this test 😩 I hope this cognitive training will help me to get the control over my mind

    When you describe the executive function issues, it describes what ADHD people are missing (me.) anyway, anxiety and adhd seem to be VERY related. My 7 year old I believe has ADHD but she is also developing a panic disorder. I know all of these have similarities and comorbidities. But the more I learn about all these mental illnesses, I’m seeing how the drugs target similar areas of the brain, etc. I think the whole mental illness field in general needs to move away from individual mental illness diagnosis to accepting that we all lie somewhere along the spectrum of mental dysfunction. We have learned that gender, autism, even bipolar disorder lie on spectrums: what’s to make us think everything in mental health must be so categorized? I think the pharmaceuticals. I support and take meds, but maybe we can re think them based on “spectrum types” that they treat well instead of multiple drugs for multiple diagnoses.
    I’ve been diagnosed with (in order): MDD, Generalized anxiety, panic disorder, PMDD, (adult diagnosed )ADHD, Bipolar 2, Bipolar “spectrum”, complex PTSD, Bipolar I and OCD. There is no way I have them all!!
    The current doctor thinks PMDD, OCD, Panic disorder and CPTSD are accurate. She’s questioning the ADHD like every other provider. But I’ve had it since childhood... no one ever took me in for it because I was gifted...

    I've noticed that the 'beat the clock' type of brain games are not anxiety reducing at all. The ones where you can take your time are relaxing.
    A game or puzzle with just enough challenge, without frustration, is just right to grab your attention and take you into a zone temporarily away from your troubles. For generations people had the daily ritual of the crossword puzzle from the newspaper. Nowadays electronically there's solitaire and many other easy concept games like maj jong or sudoku, that might help even 'concentration challenged' people who need a distraction and at the same time may get a little daily relaxation and enjoyment and a personal sense of accomplishment.

    My script usually starts when I wake around 3:30 - 4 am. Usually can’t get back to sleep. Then I go through the day slightly “off,” and more prone to distraction or forgetful moments. Then usually make some kind of error, which causes delay, frustration, confusion - then more anxiety. I have recently started learning piano and find many of the drills to be excellent and rewarding moments, though can lead to some frustration too. 😯! Truly do appreciate these videos and the generally thoughtful and supportive community. We are not alone!!

    Anxiety is absolutely destroying me. My doctor has absolutely no idea about how to help me. And neither do I. All people keep saying to me is 'give it time' how can someone who is petrified and having the most terrifying thoughts give it time? It gets that bad sometimes that I wish I could be put to sleep just for a short time. The only thing that keeps me going every day is my babies and husband. If I didn't have them I honestly do worry about where I would be.

    I suffer from GAD and struggle with panic attacks related to PTSD. I can multitask, but I have to be in a very specific, quiet environment to be able to focus only in one task.
    I like to play simple cellphone games where I need to focus and to do lists and stuff like that, I've read it helps the Hyppocampus, and it seems a small Hyppocampus may cause a lot of my current mental health issues and even possible Alzheimer that runs in part of my family.

    Hi Dr Marks, been watching and sharing most of your vids to my friends and family so they could understand how painful it is when panic attacks, you've been so helpful understanding my condition and thanks a lot to your knowledge shared to us.
    Anyway, I had a stroke due to this virus and it almost took me twice as the virus also threatened me of having cardiac arrest while in the hospital with BP of 80/40. Gladly, I was able to survive it but due to stroke which remains the sensation of dying still lingers fresh in my mind, due to this, I had to take stroke meds maintenance plus Xanor and Rivotril.
    Now, I am seeing a psychiatrist because from 1/4 a day dosage of rivotril for 4months, now, I have to take 1/2 to not to feel the stroke like symptoms.
    Not scared of the coronavirus and I am definite that I am not depressed, but I am losing control when I feel the sensation of having a stroke, I know I am just panicking but if it becomes too much, I tend to forget that it is just panic. I even feel that my heart would fail and it might kill me especially when my BP starts to elevate.
    There is so much to tell but I am not sure what I have, my psychiatrist didn't even bother to tell what I have, he just gave me Escitolapram and Quetiapine, not sure which one of those is giving me the bruxism.
    I am just too worried that this might get worst over time as I live away from my family and we have a history in our family of mental illnesses.
    Not sure where my question is leading but I want to start by knowing how to identify what kind of anxiety I have.
    On your playlist about panics, I have 90% of the symptoms you mentioned in the first vid on that playlist.

      I even play your vids overnight as your voice gives me the comfort of me getting better when ever you talk about anything. I am basically turning your channel in to my own radio station. Thanks so much for giving us ideas as to how we can handle situations ourselves.

    Thanks for the suggestion I will try the cognitive. I took the mcat 4 times while working to full time jobs and had to explain over and over to the admissions committee how my neuroplasticity negatively impacts on mcat test taking performance but I have finnaly been accepted to med school and will be a phenomenal md just like you I hope

    I gained attentional control over time by going to the gym 6 days a week. I also play video games which I enjoy. I balanced a stressful nurse lifestyle by becoming also a massotherapist allowing me to cut back on days of craziness by adding days of zeniness which I enjoy too. I had depression and anxiety. I still get anxiety at times, but now I know my way out. No more depression. Been to therapy both individual and public which helped in the end understanding some patterns. There is a way out if you put your heart into it, but sometimes it requires to turn the mental switch to off and do things like the things I mentionned above without thinking for when the mind brings you down, you need that invisible force to pull you back up. When it is up, that is when you realize the nasty mindtricks you were casting on yourself or that made you trapped in a loop.. darn here I go again, trying to explain something I can't find words for. lmao. By the way, stronger than ever now. Pretty damn successful too. I hope you find your way, all of you.

    I wonder how you are such an educated person and how does this reflect on your private life. In other words the echo of what you know on your relationship with your husband and family. This is something we want you to focus the light on in order to help us build bridges between us and kur family members. The other thing is how you were raised at home and motivated you to reach such a standard. Is it in your genetics or because of the way you were raised or combination of both. How many hours do you dedicate of your time to educate yourself and be so informative to us. I was in Jordan for holiday and all I was interested in is to listen to your videos. I am really obsessed of what I hear. I am really thankful to you Dr. Tracey. I always pass your videos to your friends and they all love them.

    I feel I've had anxiety my hole life even though I've just experience it for real this time.
    It really started since my dog and my grandma got sick and passed away within a period of months I started getting stomach problems, nausea, and a general sense of imbalance and malaise.
    I've thought (and still do) it is a serious illness and not just anxiety even though I've made many appointments with doctors and had a few medical tests done that show that my body it's better than just fine.
    I believe it's just been a period of months that will eventually go away at some point but I do have good and bad days inside this anxiety.
    My psychologist told me to connect to other people since that could be the source of it and bc we are social beings... That's why I wrote this. Hope it helps somebody know you are not the only one :)

      Similar! Looking back on my 20s, I’d have stressful times and experience so many symptoms that were clearly anxiety-including the nausea and stomach problems-same happened in my 30s and now in my 40s I’m really realizing it’s anxiety popping back up. This time I’m actively getting some help and reaching out to different people. 🤞

    Hey Dr. Marks, I was wondering if you’re making (or if you’ve already made) a calendar for 2021? I loved your 2020 calendar and all the prompts and pictures! Also, thanks for the information on attentional control. It was very interesting and I’m always intrigued by how all mental conditions are linked. I had no idea executive functioning could be linked to depression and anxiety! Very grateful for the information and suggestion.

    Hello Dr.Tracey! I was trying to find more information around olfactory hallucinations on youtube but it didn’t really have much. I am wondering if these hallucinations might be caused by my mental illnesses. I do not have psychosis but have MDD, panic disorder,etc. Thanks for your educational video!

    Thank you for all of your videos that have anything to do with anxiety or depression, as those are particularly relevant to me. And thanks also for your video last week about the benefits of learning to play a musical instrument. I used to play the piano when I was younger. I played it very poorly mind you. Even so, I remember it being very therapeutic for me to do it. And I would actually compose my own song melodies (or at least portions of them), by examining the great melodies that have been composed by professional songwriters, trying to figure out what makes a great melody great. I remember that I felt particularly creative when I was doing that. Even euphoric. Oh well, anyway thank you for that video. My best to you Dr. Marks.

    This must be why I can get caught up coloring with color pencils for hours when my anxiety is keeping me up.. didn't know I was doing something therapeutic! I listen to a meditation combined with guided meditation to sleep. And pick an 15 minutes one at night, right after my morning guided prayer meditation. Worry tape just keeps on rolling.. plus I have been dealing with chronic pain for 2 years {fascia release therapy works but temporary} I have to go to the last option.. spine center in Charleston end of this month. Just thinking about that is freaking me out. I just stay home because the anxiety causes the pinched nerves in my neck hurt worse and moves up my throat and jaws. Sorry I just vented 😬 I really enjoy your videos. I try not to miss a one! Thank you

    Oh my goodness. U are an amazing dr.. I've been a worrier since i was a kid. Now that I'm in my 40s there are certain words that send me on a massive anxiety path. For ex: bus.. My mind goes.... " what if the bus is late? What if the bus is early and i dont have the change ready? What if the bus driver drives while i am putting the money in and i fall? What if i fall and my belongings spill all over the floor? What if i smack myself while trying to find a seat? What if the bus is full and i have to stand? How will i keep from falling on someone when the bus makes the turns? What if there's a psycho on the bus? A terrorist? A drunk with a weapon?" and then i start heavy breathing, get chest pains, and i have the indecisive feeling of wanting to get away but hide under the blanket too. It's exhausting.

    Hi Dr. Marks, big fan! Thank you so much for your time. I have a request, may you talk about Narrative Therapy please? Been working on seeing my life through my eyes and that has left me with the feeling of a huge void that I cannot feel but have realized it's because my point of view is based on other people's points of view. These other people are close to me but treat me negatively. Ok they are my parents. So I must learn to work with them and not leave them.
