    This video is exactly that I needed! Today I bought an "80s prom nightmare" 😂for $6! It is very similar to yours, with a black velvet bodice, but mine has a shiny blue skirt and big bow! It is very flattering in the waist, but I can't zip it up past my rib cage. It fits me just about the same as your dress fit you. I think I am going to shorten the skirt, but the bow is staying! I'm so excited to make this dress my own while keeping the 80s style intact. Thank you for this tutorial!

    This was so nicely explained! Just a curious question for when I measure myself in the future though. If my dress is tight when I zip up at the top like how it is in your video but fits everywhere else, does that mean I made a mistake in the measurement of my shoulder or my bust?

The bust needed a few inches to be breathable. I thought about adjusting it since it was a thrift store find but in the end a few things came together and I left it. How would you adjust a dress without a zipper and just side seams. It was ll on fabric and long and had. A lining.

      Hi, For adding to the side seam with a zipper, you will need to remove the zipper, pattern a triangle in half and add extra seam allowance where the zipper is going at that half point. Then insert the two half triangles, then put back in the zipper. Hope that helps. You want to make sure you keep your dress balanced so it does not pull more to one side. Thank you for watching.

    • @SewAnastasia
      @SewAnastasia  8 месяцев назад

      Alright, Geraline, here's the deal. First, grab that stretchy black material and measure it to fit the sides of your dress. Cut it and pin it in place, making sure to avoid messing with the back and its precious zipper. Then, get your sewing game on and stitch that material onto the dress. Don't forget to give it a good press with an iron for that professional look. You got this!

    I have to add panels to a unpleated cheer skirt, and I'm freaking out. It has stripes down the sides and a back invisible zipper. Should i do panels or just replace the entire back panel, zipper and all?

    • @SewAnastasia
      @SewAnastasia  3 года назад

      If you can find matching fabric I would add panels.

    hi. i have a summer flowery dress that doesn't have a zipper and i barely fit in it in the chest area. i felt super squeezed. i was wondering how to alter it. should i mesure my bust without the dress then see the difference with the dress ? I've never done that before. i have no actual "triangle" to draw from.

    • @SewAnastasia
      @SewAnastasia  2 года назад

      Yes you can totally do that. You can also add a zipper to it.

    What are the other ways to sew in the second lining seam without flipping it inside out? Do you have/recommend any videos or sources that provide a kinda general list of the different options? I'm not removing any other seams or the zipper so I think it would be easier for me to do an alternative (especially because I have a tendency to make holes when seam ripping , oops)

    • @SewAnastasia
      @SewAnastasia  3 года назад

      The easiest thing would be to hand sew up the hole that’s created

    • @SewAnastasia
      @SewAnastasia  3 года назад

      Basically you have to create some sort of opening to be able to get into the dress or you have to hand sew up to seam. like with a slip stitch

      I don't think you want to add it to darts but you can add it to different seams.

    Hi Anastasia, can you help me understanding something math-wise? So your top opening was about 2.5 inches. You then cut out two pieces of extra fabric, each 2.25 inches wide at the tops which included a half inch seam allowance. Then you attached those at the sides- wouldn't that make the triangle fabric (minus the seam allowance) 1.5 inches each, for a total of 3 inches, making the alteration .50 inch bigger than the original 2.5inch opening?
    Maybe my math is totally wrong (very possible) but I'm confused :(

    • @SewAnastasia
      @SewAnastasia  11 месяцев назад

      I don’t remember doing it but basically make it as big as you need it plus seam allowance. Happy sewing! Maybe I added ease? I don’t remember exactly what I did unless I go back & watch it but I hope that helps.

      You will also need to add to the sleeves.

    Have you done this with pants that don’t fully zip in the front? I was thinking of opening the side seams to do this same kind of trick (or paying a seamstress to do it). Would this same technique work?

    I have a dress I want to do this with, like yours it has a velvet bodice and is lined, however it also has sleeves. I’m not sure how to go about it because of the sleeves.

    • @SewAnastasia
      @SewAnastasia  2 года назад

      You can take off the sleeves, let out the bodice & let out the sleeves & then see them back on

    would opening back and front darts help instead?

    • @SewAnastasia
      @SewAnastasia  Год назад +1

      You can open up the darts but you might need them for shape. It really depends on how the top is fitting. I have defiantly done that to darts before and it has worked. This dress had princess lines and no darts.

      @@SewAnastasia Thank you Anastasia, my dress is a full skirt with a fitted bodice. I opened the back darts but left the bust darts in and it now fits perfectly. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

    @sew Anastasia, I just bought a dress that’s 1 size too small, but they sold out of the size small, if you decide to take your clothes to a professional tailor, do you still have to purchase the fabric on your own? Or can they use the bottom hem line to fill in the side of the bust & side to open the waist as well, I’m very short, so losing some length shouldn’t be a prob, Ty, I hope I hear back from you!

    • @SewAnastasia
      @SewAnastasia  2 года назад

      Hi Lisa, The tailor can totally use the fabric from them hem since you are shortening it! I hope it turns out awesome!
