Why Car Electronics are so Complex

- Here's an in-depth look inside a car's electrical system and how it works. To break down this complex topic, this video will cover 6 main topics:
1:05 Power Distribution
5:43 Wiring Harness
8:49 Connectors
12:21 Electrical Modules
15:25 Wiring Diagram
20:22 CANBus Communication
The electrical system in a car is responsible for controlling and distributing electricity from the car's battery and alternator to each component in the vehicle. Current begins its journey at the battery (and then the alternator if the engine is running), and makes its way to the intelligent power distribution module, which contains circuit breakers, fuses and relays. Current is then split off into various circuits through the wiring harness, which will feed electrical loads, such as modules, computers, light bulbs and motors.
To connect the various electronic devices in a modern vehicle, a network of communication, called CANBus is used. It significantly reduces the number of wires travelling throughout a car, enables easier communication between computer modules and aids with advanced diagnostics.
Also discussed is how to properly diagnose an electrical issue in your car, properly fix a broken wire and de-pin an electrical connector.
The majority of components in this video were from a 2004 Infiniti G35's electrical system.

I lovve how that toothbrush is an iconic part of all your videos now. Good work man.
Thanks
Thanks. It started as a joke cleaning the throttle body and everyone thinks I'm a dentist now

Things i want to understand in my life.
1. ENGINE CONTROL UNIT.
2.WOMEN
3.SPEEDKAR99 BROTHER.
The oral B toothbrush at the beginning of the video is my wife's.
Colgate is my brothers 😉

Women more complex Chanakya

@@chanakyasinha8046 sorry guy I'm in my 60s and wemon are the biggest mystery in the universe, I know wemon that dont even understand themselves.
I was investigating a fault with my VW airbag system today, and I noted the connectors have a really cool safety feature that when they're removed, they short out the airbag igniter pins so you don't accidentally fire them off with static electricity. Very neat.
BTW this video has to be the most comprehensive and informative video on car electrics that I've seen, nice work!
That's cool!
I love these start-to-finish videos. The way the information is compiled--it's like reading a textbook, which is amazing. That said, this video should have been twice as long. The information density is such that I felt like I was speed reading. I found myself either rewatching segments or lowering the playback speed and occasionally pausing, just to be able to internalize all that is presented. My brain is strong, but it still needs a second to catch its breath!
I agree 100%. If you see my rough notes when compling this video it was like a textbook....laid out by the 6 segments I sectioned this video into. I was hoping that sectioning it would make it easier to understand but also didn't want to carry the video on to be too long and boring, thus I tried to edit it to be as concise as possible. #informationdensity
@@speedkar99 Thanks for the response. Don't worry about boring! The people who are choosing to watch this type of video are people who are genuinely interested in the material and will only appreciate it. Sections are great for all videos, but are actually even more beneficial the longer a video is. Plus, it's *way* easier to watch a long video on a faster speed than to have to constantly pause a video that's moving along too quickly. (We're used to watching at high speed for creators like South Main Auto already, and it works really well there.)
Thanks again!
I felt the same.. You just stole my mind
@@speedkar99 you have did a great job fpr content in this video.. I took more than half an hour understanding the whole things
Lowering playback speed. Now why didn't I think if that? Great idea. I guess this situation is exactly why we have that option! Which then asks the question.....Why is there an option to speed it up? More so, when would you need that??
To break down this complex system, you can skip to each of the six topics:
1. Power Distribution 1:04
2. Wiring Harness 5:42
3. Connectors 8:48
4. Electrical Modules 12:20
5. Wiring Diagram 15:25
6. CANBus Communication 20:21
Ayy if you put the timestamps before the section titles in the description, RUclips will show the sections in the player
Damn your videos are the stuffs of gold
Add 0:00 in the description and your video will get those cool chapters, it doesn't work if you don't add 0:00.

Thanks. More to come
Slowing down the video speed really helps. Full of information, thanks!
Well explained, well detailed, well demonstrated, excellent coverage. Amazing work, appreciate it.
Great video!! I just subscribed to your channel and love all your videos. I have just one little thing to add….Sometimes wires will read the correct voltage using a multi meter, but unable to handle a load due to corrosion or a small break in the circuit, etc. That’s where a nifty tool called a “loadpro” comes in handy. It puts a load on the circuit and you check for voltage drop on your meter. Alot of old school mechanics would use a headlight to load the circuit before loadpro’s became available.
Great video!!! The first time ever I saw a car computer. Thanks.
Awesome. It's just a circuit board
You definitely have a gift man! Thank you for sharing such knowledge.
Wow. Amazing how a simple thing like winding down a window is controlled by such a complex system
Agreed!
On my Lexus it's all controlled thru the body controller and is evenore complex

Great video! The best lecture I've had on the subject! Subscribed.
From my point of view, manufacturers opted for the simplest and cheapest way to control sensors, ignoring out the fact that maintenance and troubleshooting is a nightmare.
It would be amazing if they built a serial communication and power bus that ran through the chassis, and have all the sensors be intelligent and connect to this bus, all with the same standardized connector, and a single ecu to manage all modules through software. This way, you wouldn't have a wire harness, and diagnosis & maintenance would be a bliss. However, it would be costly.
They do. It's called a can bud.
Very thorough! Awesome!
Wonderful work you have done in this video, many thanks for doing it.
Thank you very much for sharing this information with everyone, excellent video, that toothbrush is for sure very knowledgeable :).

I need your help @speedkar99 my toyota keeps "pouring" coolant through the overflow hose on the coolant reservoir. It does so after running for a while under normal driving conditions. There's no visible dripping or leakage from any of the hoses or around the thermostat. It pours it even though its not over filled and if its not topped up it will drain the radiator. Please help
as always most educative. great service indeed. Regards

Love you bro...finally I got my dream project video..I am automotive engineer..your all video are very helpful for students as well as professionals...
Pls make more video's on ECU software related, autosar,CAN ,LIN,
Thanks God bless you
Agree
you should buy a used German car (bmw) and you will have to fix it by becoming intimate with all its design bugs.
I got a recent E350 with a software controlled alternator, what could go wrong with a Benz, right...?
The front main AGM battery sensor (Volt, Amp, Temp) is connected by LIN bus all the way to the rear SAM module in the trunk (instead of front SAM)
More than 5 Distinct CAN Buses are inter connected through a GATEWAY Module whos job it is to relay messages across separate networks.
Backup Camera software crashes itself on regular basis, causes the Gateway to jam messages and the engine ECU to discharge 90Amp under 11.8V from big AGM battery... that abuse roast all the connectors, then dealer replaces $700 battery without fixing the cheap camera. Great money pit business.
Stay away from German money pits, stick with the Lexus refined design version of German chaos. Japanese build cars under license of selected German gear.
👍
cars are so complex that the only way to fix them for profit is by following TSB's or hanging expensive parts until the customer stops coming.
Reverse engineering spaghetti CAN Bus design is a true labor of love. The solution in the end is often a module or a simple software update.
Benz love frying "SAM Modules" that is the "smart fuse boxes" present in every car based on Robert Bösch goodness.
Love this channel! Even though I have been a mechanic for over 10 years I always learn something new in your videos 😀 cheers from Sweden.

Wow very interesting. Good job
I bet u are gonna be able to work on jumbo jet electrical systems
U are smart and capable
It's not double sided tape on the ECM. Those are thermally conductive tape to help cool the driver ICs on the board. As you can see, the tape is directly underneath the drivers and contacts the aluminum back plate to act as a heat sink. The white part in the airbag module is not a relay, it's a shock sensor for front collisions. Bose makes the amp, ask them why they use those torx screws. They sell basically the same amp to a bunch of OEMs. Great explanation of the CAN bus basics.
Amazing vids sir!!
