As a Retired Auto Tech & Community College Instructor (57 years experience with ASE Master & L1) I love your descriptions & testing logic, exactly as I taught my students to do. It might be a good idea to compare diagrams for various manufacturers so people can see the minor differences. Keep up the great work!
Many people do not know how to properly use electrical test equipment, especially for parasitic drain and loading circuits for voltage drop testing. It would be good to do a series based on these points. Again, keep up the great videos you provide. I have watched many of your videos and love what I see.

Why are components given ground in a car? In a house like a light switch it's given power so it's not constantly hot. So car components are constantly hot? Am I mistaken?

    • @gregwarren8583
      @gregwarren8583 Год назад +7

@@abes7181 Abe, We use DC except internally in a Generator (usually called an alternator) tis device produced 3 phase AC which then goes through a rectifier to produce a pulsed DC output to the battery.
Automotive circuits are usually Hot or Ground side switched. Ground is used as a return path for todays' Negative Ground systems. A switch may be constantly powered from the battery (ground side switcing), or switched power to a component (hot side switching). Let me know if you have any other questions.

@@abes7181Abe the use of the term "ground" in automotive electronics is a bit misleading. As you are likely aware that rubber tires are good insulators so nothing is actually going to the ground. As a circuit must be complete for current to flow, the metal frame of the car is the ground but most importantly is the metal frame is directly wired to the negative post on the battery completing the circuit. So when you hear "ground" just think negative to the battery.

You're by far the best teacher for automotive electrical! I have struggled for years understanding wiring diagrams and firing the parts cannon at my cars. I replaced an entire ABS computer and pump when I tested the relay and though it was good. Come to find out, it wasn't; only because I tried every other part. It was one simple plug and play part that I somehow tested incorrectly, resulting in spending lots of time and money installing other parts. Thank you for all these videos and all you give back to us in the car community.

Excellent video! You bridge the gap between basic knowledge of electrical circuits and making sense of wiring diagrams.
Also great is the logic of what to check first, second and so on to avoid chasing your tail.
Seeing a circuit clearly from start to finish is vital in correctly solving the problem without throwing parts, time and energy in all directions.
Thank you for explaining things so clearly.

You got me in trouble today. I booked my UK spec 2022 RAV4 into a Toyota main dealer. I asked for genuine Toyota 0W-16 engine oil to be used. I was told we only use 0W-20. The service receptionist now thinks I'm either a nutcase or have OCD. Imagine me telling a UK Toyota main dealer to watch your channel. I struggle to see how Toyota UK can accept this issue. I'm only trying to follow the user manual recommendation. This is my first Toyota and from today's experience I might have to reconsider going back to Broke-My-Wallet. Sorry this is off-topic.

Side story about starters: I was about 22 and driving down the highway and the sticks hit felt warm and smoke was coming from under the car in through the stickshift boot. It was '69 Cortina. I went to change gears and the the whole sticks hit pulled out of the transmission and smoke poured in!! I put it back into the transmission and made it to my destination. BTW, the plastic bushing that sealed the sticks hit in had melted. My brother said he'd follow me home that evening, when on the way he flagged me down and said there were sparks and flames dropping from my poor little car. I pulled off the interstate jumped the curb into a parking spot, I pulled the hood and he immediately pulled one of the terminals from my battery. Both battery cables were burned bare since my starter bolts loosed from an oil leak and caused the positive terminal on the starter to ground out. To this day I count my blessings as we could have had a complete car fire! I got $25 for it at the junkyard. Point is, I know how powerful the starter cables can be.

I've watched a lot of videos from "Pine hollow auto diagnostics" and "South main auto repair", and it's amazing how many times it's just a bad ground. Rust and corrosion take their toll on the connection.
On my 2003 Rav4, the remote to open the door worked normally and then suddenly it wouldn't work. When I opened the door by key it would only open that door and no others, and the inside lock switches on both doors wouldn't do anything. After a few weeks of that, suddenly everything worked again as normal. It screams bad ground to me, but I have the wiring diagram so with that and the info I learned here I'm going to see if i can figure it out once the weather gets better.

THANK YOU!!, "TCCN", FOR GOING THRU SOME OF THESE VERY HELPFUL INSIGHTS, AS TO HOW TO INTERPRET SOME OF THOSE "TINY" DETAILS, ON TYPICAL AUTOMOTIVE ELECTRICAL DRAWINGS! I AM NOT/(WASN'T) WELL UP TO SPEED, ON MANY OF THOSE "SPECIAL" CODES, ABBREVIATIONS, STANDARD NOTATIONS", ETC. YOU HELPED, A LOT, IN BEGINNING TO UNDERSTAND SOME OF THESE COMPLEX NOTATIONS, AND, I THINK THAT I'LL HAVE BETTER SUCCESS, WHEN I NEED TO FIND THE "TROUBLE", AND, POSSIBLE WAYS AROUND IT!
IMHO: THE MOST DIFFICULT, AND AGGRAVATING STEP, WAS TO JUST FIND THE NEEDED SCHEMATICS/WIRING DIAGRAMS!!!! I HAD TO SPECIAL ORDER A BOOK, WITH OVER 300 PAGES OF INFO, ON THE PARTICULAR CAR MODEL,(2008 SCION XD)... IT WASN'T EASY TO LOCATE THAT!!! AND, THIS BOOK, COULD'VE BEEN MADE MUCH EASIER TO INTERPRET!...
I ONLY HOPE THAT THE ENGINEERS WHO DESIGN THESE COMPLEX SYSTEMS, MAY ALL, SOMEDAY, HAVE TO GO THRU THIS PROCESS, THEMSELVES!!!
...MAY GOD BLESS EVERY ONE OF THEM!!! 💥

Hi AMD. This video reminds me the trade school days 6 years ago when I was in Montreal. A lot of good memories with all my teachers. Very educational , much appreciated.

I wanted to comment the same as Michael 1349 said. It would be really nice to see you maybe apply a tool to demonstrate how that would actually be done. I am so grateful for your generosity in sharing all this. I am NOT a mechanic and too old to even think of becoming one, but I do tinker with our trucks and manage to actually do maintenance that consists of very basic replacing parts. I find all of this fascinating.
