We sold my grandmother's house across the river in Kearny back in 2011, and it had already gotten a lot better by then. Newark was absolutely awful when I was a kid in the late 80's early 90's, but it's made a lot of improvement since then along with the rest of the NYC metro. Even Hoboken was sketchy back then, but now it's practically as expensive as the city!
The whole premis of checking for ID is a violation and so should not be allowed. If you are being stopped for filming in public is a viloation of every right we hold.
@@ChristopherDianne No, it wouldn't be okay to stop him. If it isn't okay for a light skinned guy named John to be asked for ID for no reason, then the same rules apply for everyone regardless of race, religion, creed, skin color, sex, sexual orientation, etc. New Jersey has anti-discrimination laws where it is required for the same rules to apply to everyone.
What a lovely paddle, and thank you for taking us along. Was a very interesting conversation with the police. I can imagine their worry. Great lads though handled it so well. Take care, and lovely to meet you.
To be fair, the rivers around here have come a LONG way. Most of that brown is from silt. I've canoed in the nearby Hackensack River. When the tide goes down, you toss in a rock and it goes PLOP! in that silty mud/muck. The storm drains from streets are the mian source of any pollution. Granted, the muck still has lots of chemicals still in it from the old days before regulations.
Great exploration! Reminds me of a Wheeler Antabanez video he did walking some abandoned Newark railroad tracks out of the city (although you keep it family-friendly). Great background music, too!
The cops violated the boater’s 4th Amendment Rights. They need probable cause to ID you, this isn’t Nazi Germany. Furthermore, the Supreme Court has already ruled that video taping in public is not a crime. It’s a protected constitutional activity under the First Amendment. If you don’t exercise your rights you will lose them like this guy and be violated.
I agree with your sentiment.. but you’re wrong. Police don’t need probable cause to ask you a question.. “You don’t happen to have ID do you?” He voluntarily handed it over. You have a lot of studying to do..
Actually the context wasn’t asking. Did you not watch the video? You don’t happen to have any ID on you because I want to see it is the proper context. The boater should have known his Civil Rights and told the cop to kick rocks.
NJ is actually pretty close to N Germany lol. There are police departments everywhere in the state, and there's still crime because they selectively enforce and go harass people that are easy and have money for them. They also don't believe in the US Constitution either.
Being somewhere, especially on public land or water, Is Not a crime nor in itself suspicious. The law harassing people without cause is a threat to us all.
They are protecting our nations infrastructure, If everyone handled the police like this guy you see that it can be a positive interaction. The guy was polite the police were polite. Believe it or not, not everyone’s out to go on a rights hunt. Friendly cop asks for id for an obvious quick interaction, guy gives id and goes on with day
Tell the cops to kick rocks. They have absolutely no right to ask for ID in the first place. 11:44 It is incomprehensible to me why the infrastructure everywhere in the USA is being allowed to rust away. When I watch videos like this, I get the impression that there isn't a single older steel bridge that doesn't need a new coat of paint since years. Coating is the be-all and end-all for steel structures. In my country, painters start all over again when they're finished, they don't even wait for a condition like we see here. Maybe someone can explain it to me?
That's probably why he was stopped by "police". They worked for the rail system and did not want people recording how poorly they maintain their bridges. There's very limited government oversight on the rail companies maintaining their tracks and bridges. It often takes photos from citizens to alert authorities.

Great video. Newark is not known as a recreational area so you get attention. After 9-11 the police are aware of people filming bridges and buildings . I used to boat in the passaic River years ago. It's best to time the trip with the tides for an easier trip. I see Red Bull arena and the old Clark Thread factory. Yes, it is a fascinating area but few folks are on the water. Thanks for the video trip. Good times!

I agree with those who complained about you having to id to use a a navigable river. Until the time comes that police, and the FBI, see more Americans on OUR waterways, show your ID. I'm so thrilled you did this! It is fabulous to see the Passaic River from the river! There needs to be more people with more direct access. Like you I stress SAFTY! The Passaic can be treacherous in the spring, after serious rain fall, and at the mouth to the Hudson. It is SO refreshing to see the authorities have done so much to clean this body of water up. Now we get to see just how ugly those bridges are! We need to work on that too. Upstream around The Citys of Passaic and Clifton there is a weir or man made fall. Even further upstream there is the Passaic Falls in the City of Paterson. This waterway belongs to US, let us take care of it and use it with pride. Maybe just maybe our fellow Americans will have something nice to say about NJ. As if we care! 😂

So my point was that he should have forced the police to very directly and clearly confirm that it was a consensual conversation on video to protect himself should the interaction taken a turn if he had declined to identify.
That was in fact a good police encounter. It's actually funny reading all these comments, you all need to learn that yes the constitution does protect your rights but at the same time they do have a job to do. Whether you think its right or wrong, there job is to protect infrastructure whether or not it seems like it is important to you or not. Clearly there was an FBI building right near it and then you have someone on the river taking pictures of that along with rail bridges that is a legitimate concern whether or not he was doing anything wrong. It's actually funny because all of you sitting here going, I wouldn't have gave it them and I would of just told them to fuck off or whatever is pretty funny. What happens when something serious happens and then your the first people going, well why wasn't anything done to protect our country and stop people like that from doing what they did. Allow the police to do their damn job what are you hiding that your afraid to just give your ID to them. You can't be arrested for doing nothing clearly so unless you know something that they don't that would be your only reason to not give it to them. Yes, he had the right to say I am not doing anything just making a youtube video and politely denied giving them his ID. Why make it to that point of making it an issue, then putting yourself in more of an issue? That is right there where the problem begins when people feel like they are just going to deny do everything the police tell you to do. Follow their instructions and record everything then use it against them in court if they were wrong or that. Let your lawyer handle the situation, stop thinking that your rights are always being violated for them doing their job and protecting us and the country, because I know as well as a ton of other people that you would be the first people crying saying the police didnt do anything to stop this from happening and AMERICA and fly our flags all over our trucks and talk about this and that, when your the first ones crying about the police doing their job. If had been in an area that didn't have rail bridges, and FBI buildings and that and they came and started to harass you then fine yes i would agree 100% that now your just harassing but what they were doing was not harassing or anything they simply asked for the ID to just verify who he is and make sure if something does happen then they know who the guy is.
Photography is considered free speech u der the First Amendment. Any individual has the absolute right to take photographs of anything visible from any public location, without exception. No law enforcement agency has the right or responsibility to harass anyone excerising their lawful rights.

Your hypothetical sounds logical until a tyrant wannabe decides you’re resisting, obstructing, acting suspicious, or threatening their safety…..and anything else they have a bogus ambiguous law for them to have an excuse to take your liberty. The oath they swear to abide by is to protect YOUR “rights” and liberty. Who wants to hire a lawyer for anything and why should you have to because a cop either doesn’t know the laws he/she swore to protect or has decided to illegally violate them because there is no severe accountability for doing so?

@@jaimhaas5170 Yes, it is clear to us as informed citizens. But I’ve noticed that it is a very wide thing to clarify verbally on camera so that there is total clarity captured. There are lots of videos where police get pissed off when somebody doesn’t agree to identify, and then they turn around and say that the person was detained and try to edit history and make it seem like the person was legally required to ID. So my point was that he should have forced the police to very directly and clearly confirm that it was a consensual conversation on video to protect himself should the interaction taken a turn if he had declined to identify.
That was in fact a good police encounter. We sadly live in in a day and age where for the safety of all of us, they have to be mindful of the possible ill-intent of anybody taking pictures of rarely visited infrastructure like bridge and railroad facilities. It was handled in a very friendly way. I appreciate the fascinating rare tour of places we never get to see, and I have subscribed.
The amount of acab incels on here crying about it is a little unsettling. If the bridge got taken out, they would be screaming the opposite. Anything to bash the popo.
Thanks for the kind words, and the subscribe!
True I remember post the Sept 11 attack we were not to take photos of important and vital infrastructure, these comments smh.
When I was a kid, 60 years ago I lived right there and used to play along the banks of the river. I lived right up the street from where the storm water enters the river. Sure does look different. A lot of things are gone forever. I remember playing on the seesaws and the swings at Riverbank Park and going to the Ironbound Red Shield Boys and Girls Club. St Al's Church is still there but the school is gone. The Dairy Queen is gone and well as Park Stand Hotdogs. Thanks for the videos.
@@cue881-yo7kz hi there! Does the river look better than years ago? It feels like people don’t come outside like they used to . Thanks for the kind words and watching
@@OutDehExplorer Back in the early 60's it was cleaner. My dad grew up there and they used to go swimming in it all the time.
@@cue881-yo7kz have you seen the documentary “American River” it’s about 3 years old, all about the Passaic, you would enjoy it
@@OutDehExplorer I'll have to check it out. Thanks
I think police do this because real crime is to difficult.
No. They do it to get us used to doing whatever they say without question. That's why the mask mandates were so dangerous. Cause Americans swallowed that shit hook line and sinker. Without question. And now 4 years later we learned that we should have absolutley questioned that shit. Once they get a national ID it's over. There will be legislation forcing us to present our papers upon request. And most likely, Americans will swallow it hook line and sinker.
That's exactly why they do this.
Have you done overpeck park in Leonia / Ridgefield Park?
I was always curious how far you could get from this part of the area.
My dad once told me it connected to Bayonne but I don't think that's possible...
Hi, that area looks like a great place to explore. I’ll definitely be up that way . Thanks for the idea 💡
@OutDehFamily no problem, I want to get out there but I don't know if my legs and arms would have strength to do it from the ridgefield park nj to Bayonne nj area. Is it legal to use a gas powered boat there?
@@VintageSecure if you check the tides and wind, it should be ok. I’m not sure about gas powered. Although I see people pretty much doing whatever they want on the water these days.
@@OutDehExplorer awesome lol looks like a fun adventure. I've never seen police patrolling the overpeck area.
@@VintageSecure when you’re on a kayak or other small craft on these waters , it feels like you are the last person on earth. Even though there are cars people on land. In the water it’s very quiet. Hope you get OutDeh
Proper response to the cops. I don't answer questions. Kick rocks!
I worked at 1 Washington and 540 Broad. Always wanted to take a boat to work from Belleville.
Ha, you know that was really my reason, I worked in Newark and stared at the Passaic from 550 broad st , and said, I got to get k. There! Thanks for the great comment
How many people working real jobs look at the pair of kayak police and wonder why they are mistakenly treated as first respoder heroes?
I support real cops and fire fighters. I do not support tools like that checking on a guy in a kayak while crime is rampant all around.
A railroad bridge is public infrastructure and potentially a terrorist target. They’re just being vigilant.
Can you tell the difference or are you too bias.
Is there any current in the river, and how deep is it.? Fresh or salt water.? Thx 4 info.!!
Greetings from the Caribbean.!
Hi Benny, the River is about 40 feet deep where i was paddling. the Passaic is a tidal river where i was , its tidal all the way to the Dundee Dam in Garfield
You should not have given them your ID.
this is tidal right?
are you going out with or against the tide?
did you time your departure as appropriate?
Howdy, yes it is tidal. I usually go out right before slack tide/high tide, went up stream, and coasted back with the tide going out . although there was some wind
I look up the tides on Saltwatertides.com
Ugh... please DO NOT give your rights that are protected by the 4th amendment. That was clearly a consensual conversation, they were not detaining you, they clearly stated on camera that you were doing nothing wrong... so giving up your ID willingly when it was not at all required by law was sad. I know it is hard to say calmly and cooly, "Since you have made it clear that I've done nothing wrong and this is a consensual conversation and you are asking for ID, but can;t legally and lawfully demand it in this situation, I respectfully decline because my 4th amendment rights are important to me. I protect them on principle." But please, practice it and do it!
Huh? No I'd , to late. 😂
I definitely will kayak as my bucket list, hudson
If you got nothing to hide what the problem Show Dam ID and move one
Lived by there for 20 years. Cant believe you kayaked in that super industrial river
Hi Chris! me neither! it was a bit of a bucket list thing, but I will be back on there again. thanks for the great comment
All you questioning why the cops are checking him out are the same ones that if something happened would be crying why cops didn’t do anything to prevent it.
Ok bootlicker.
This is AMERICA and you have rights. Use them or lose them.
no, that is not true, your statement is dumb. cops exist to serve and protect not to spy on american citizens, that is exactly what Newark PD is doing for the feds. All these agencies are doing this, collecting data on private american citizens, notice how he took a photo of his id -that is super wrong. youre talking nonsense here. time to grow up.
Nice try, redcoat
@@JohnAllgeier-f6r he’s literally paddling In some of the most disgusting, hazardous water in the US. The cops were generally concerned for his safety because nobody in their right mind would want to be near that water. ☢️
God Bless You, looks like a lot of fun ! Great history, around where you are at , the first setters landed in the 1600’s and called it New Ark. 🇺🇸 next time try the Hackensack River .😊
@@melcher44 when I’m paddling these rivers I do imagine what it must have been like before it was industrialized. It’s still feels magical on these waters . I want to get back to the Hackensack too. Thanks for the great comment
Your wrong, law enforcement is given the right by the city officials who employ them. Photography is free speech and you have the right to refuse their questions, but at the same time law enforcement has the right to question anyone. It’s called common law right of inquiry.
They do have a job! This is not it!!!!!! You sound like the embodiment of Ben Franklin's quote of those who give up their freedom for security deserve neither!!
If you want to give up your rights go right ahead. Save your lecture for someone who cares. For each right you give up is one you will never get back.
Too cool.
Thanks for this post.
Awesome territory
It would be real neat to see your route on a map before and after you paddle.

How many bodies did you find there?
I hit a few weird floating logs, didn't double check ....🤣

That river is a lot cleaner than when I was a kid. Probably could have seen a deleted body floating down the river at any point in time in the late 80s😂
It’s an adventure on there 💯 , I like the thrill of it
I am an avid kayaker among other things. I recently did the Camden Water Trail which starts I'm Cherry Hill NJ snakes all the way through Camden (equally if nit more dangerous than Newark) and ends on the Delaware River with a route around Petty Island. This is right by the Ben Franklin Bridge which goes from center city Philadelphia to downtown Camden by Rutgers and Rowan Camden College Campuses. It's a little interesting going under one particular bridge in camden where there's a homeless encampment. Scary....actually it was scary since someone started throwing rocks at me. But I would recommend in a group.
