Do you know what the nickname of the NX Bridge is (besides the stuck bridge) ? Do you what is written on top of the bridge? Let us know in the comments
My guess is the river is running low. The Morris Canal at Hugh Force Park in Wharton has some interesting wildlife if you can get their before it gets cold.
@@MH-gi7ze the passaic is running low, although this section is tidal,/ love the hugh force canal idea!, i have family out in sussex county. maybe in the spring i'll check it out, thank you :)
7:34 It's a moveable swing bridge; it spins around (or did) on top of the circular pier. Typically they spin around much closer to the water like the Clay St/Jackson St./Lyndhurst bridges. 9:42 I believe is the Newark Asphalt plant.
There's a lot to see and video if you put in in Secaucus and head south on the Hackensack River. Lots of tug traffic and infrastructure around Port Elizabeth. Time the tides and they will carry you down and back up again. You might even make it to the Statue of Liberty if the harbor chop doesn't get too rough.
@@ronkonkoma7812 the day of this paddle I was about to launch out of Secaucus. I love your idea. I’ll definitely do and up and down using the tides in the spring . Thank you for the encouragement
The bridge at 7:40 is the WR draw- a former Erie-Lackawanna Railway bridge that was welded shut years ago so it no longer is capable of opening. It carried the Lower Boonton rail line which went out of service in 2002 partly due to this bridge no longer being safe for trains to pass over due to its foundations being undermined by storm driven river currents. It is shown in the opening credits of The Sopranos.
@@OutDehExplorer The reason the bridge and some of the others no longer need to be able to open is part of history too. Most of the bridges over the river are old, some (including WR) from the 19th century. Back then traffic on the river was busy (as opposed to practically non-existent now) and consisted of steam powered and some sailing vessels. They all needed considerable overhead clearance due to masts and tall smokestacks designed to provide efficient draft to boiler furnaces in the engine room. Today's vessels are almost al diesel powered with snort, stubby stacks or side exhausts and don't take up as much vertical space. n
The Boonton line bridge was an additional way to commute to Hoboken/New York someone explained it above.NJ transit failed to maintain the line causing it to be in total disrepair. When there is problem on the Montclair branch wires down etc ….there’s no alternative route..This bridge is now part of the Future …Rails Trail….but will cost millions of dollars to fix the bridge and maintain the Deep Gorge that goes through Kearny Mtn…..
Back in the middle 60s I was a sea cadet and we used to sail a very old steal cabin cruiser in the same area so what your doing brings back some great memories thx Tommy
Also I remember watching the trains going over that old stuck bridge as a kid. Then around 76' they stopped using it and its been up ever since. I was always hopping to see it in use again but now I am just glad to see its still there.
The floating dock you went around just before visiting the debris removal vessel was used in a scene from the Sopranos. Paulie Walnuts confronted Christopher on the dock and threatened him. The Belleville Pike bridge is seen in the background.
Ha!, I felt like hannibal lecter was watching me under William A Stickle bridge at rt 280. it was extremely unsettling under there. Thanks for the great comment
2nd River is the tributary that forms the boarder between Newark and Belleville that it runs along Mill Street. Belleville was in fact originally know as 2nd River during it's early history.
Hey Kenny, glad to see you here again. I Love doing the Kayaking videos in Elizabeth and Newark, I got to do more next spring . Thanks for checking it out
I love these videos . I have to tell ya , I kept my mouth closed during the whole thing . The thought of that water gettin in my mouth just totally grossed me out . Lol I'd definitely get a tetanus shot after that paddle session . Haaa God Bless 💯🙏❤🇺🇸
@OutDehExplorerI love your videos, by the way. I've never seen the mouth of the Second River even though I've lived close to it all my life! If you had paddled upriver to the Washington Ave bridge, you would have seen something interesting. The river powered several mills in colonial tmes. Some of the milestones were left behind after the mills were abandoned. They were used to bolster the banks of the river.
Great paddle in old town. Love your urban adventures, big fan. I grew up in Totowa and ventures streams and rivers besides numerous clean ups with BSA troop 26. He was a Colorado fellow who called Fairfield,NJ his home in years of youth.
@@jimmatthews8385 hi Jim, thanks for the kind words. Lots of rich history on the river. I went to the premiere of American River at the njpac, great night. I’ll have to check out the Colorado fella, sounds great!
hi Kris, it has its challenges. i don't recommend this route for a beginner. also, due to the pollution/dioxin, i would advise doing this sparingly, and not getting wet if possible
A little trivia you will never kayak the “1st river “ ….it is all now under roadways in West Newark….2nd River Starts in Central Montclair…3rd River Starts up by Montclair State University and flows through Nutley and enters Passaic River by Rt3
where the NX Bridge is, theyre supposed to turn all the old railway path to a biking and walking path all the way to Hudson county. so youll be able to bike all the way through when its done. its called the Essex - Hudson county greenway. itll be 9 miles long when completed from Jersey city all the way to montclair
@@OutDehExplorer would be interesting if they tried to use it or build a newer one next to it since its a bit of a landmark. the drawings they have shown though definitely show a bridge to cross from kearny to newark. also funny enough in those drawings, they were showing off kayaks, so maybe a glimpse into something theyre planning on hopefully bringing back some fun on the water maybe along the path??
