Yeah. I was at a con back in the day when this came out and they were showing few episodes there. Whole room was dying from laughter. They talked about how it ended up being made and the Japanese company giving the go ahead to do whatever they wanted with it.

there was a little misinformation because it did well in Japan and the reason it was so improvey was because of a certain writer but meh its fine.
I do wish that one compilation was up where it was a 3 parter (tho i wouldnt want them to react on all 3) but it got deleted on youtube years ago and i think regenade react did do the 3 parts but it was deleted to. I just enjoyed it because it did the jokes in order for that episode and recurring jokes were played close together so it made sense.

So basically the adults were watching the live action and the kids got the anime . The anime even got multiple dvd releases , which flops never do

Some more backstory:
One of the writers and the cast got drunk one evening, and just went said whatever came to mind while doing a semi-roleplay of the show.
Then they took what was written down and cleaned it up a bit before actually recording it at a later date.
It then went on to be a success in the west so much that the dub was then redubbed back into Japanese and re-aired as one of the first official abridged series.
What did the Japanese think of it?
It's not abridged. To abridged would be to shorten, the dub and re dub are the same length of story and roughly the same story but outrageous. No editing either, shot for shot the same as the original.
This would be a gag dub, but not abridged. Stuff like SAO or DBZ abridged may be comedy and gags, but they're also actually abridged, as in they're much shorter and condensed.
Nah, it didn't get redubbed back into Japanese. Also, the original wasn't a flop in Japan, apparently it was even more popular than Pokemon at times when it originally aired. Some miscommunication between Animax and ADV is what led to the story of it being a flop in Japan. The dialog director has stated that the attorney for ADV who negotiated the deal is the one who told him that Ghost Stories wasn't well liked and that he could do anything he wanted in order to make money.
That being said, the few explicitly stated rules by Animax were followed, there wasn't a lawsuit over this dub, and it's still widely available so it worked out perfectly fine. Definitely a unique situation which most people can be happy happened at all. Sure it's offensive so it isn't for everyone, but I think it's obvious that its shock humor works by being so outlandish that you can't really take it seriously.

So the man who made the request was mostly correct, but contrary to popular belief the show didn't flop in Japan. In japan it was actually pretty successful, plenty of merch and all. The hang up around it's adaptation, to my understanding, is that it was just THAT submerged in Japanese culture/folklore that no one thought it'd do well in the west as it was.
So, they did what any sane studio would do...
They gave *Americans* of all people the rights to do pretty much whatever they wanted to it.😂

Yep, the Japanese studio wasn't sure all the Japanese folklore and culture would really be understood to make the show good. I don't think they intended for this.. But it worked out.
This was especially when anime was not that popular in the West yet (compared to now) and dubbing studios were not even close to being as large of an industry as they are now, so yeah it makes sense.

Also fun fact, Steven Foster Directed and was one of the writers on Ghost Stories. He was known at the time for being a little fluid with the dubbing process to add in jokes that localised better. Hence, he was a great choice for messing with the dub on this one.

Edit: The black cat is actually one of the first ghost enemies in the show, who the kids managed to seal into a cat.

5:25 Like R said, the show wasn't allowed to change the main characters' names nor the overall plot so despite the main characters having their original names, they were changed to have certain stereotypes: Leo (boy with glasses) is a dorky Jewish kid, Momoko (girl with purple hair) is a "born-again" Christian who constantly makes religious remarks, Hajime (boy with black hair) is overtly and constantly h*rny, Satsuki (girl with brown hair) is the protagonist and doesn't have any distinct stereotypes that I know of, and her little brother Keiichiro is... well, mentally challenged 😬 last but not least, the cat... it's actually an evil spirit named Amanojaku that was trapped inside Satsuki's cat Kaya and is typically hostile to the kids, always making snide comments and enjoys seeing the kids get into trouble

the origin story of the ghost stories dub may not be true, the show did very well in japan and its believed that one of the English writer, steven foster who was know for making significant changes, told the story that the show was a flop to everyone so he could just do what ever the hell he wanted. but i dont think we'll ever really know

PS: Japanese folklore are very scary but charmign and interesting too, the boom born especially thanks to Mizuki Shigeru with his Akumakun and GeGeGe no Kitaro series from '50-'60 w
The backstory is legendary. The dubbing company wanted to do another show (I forget which), but the producers wouldn't give it up unless they agreed to do this as well. In Japan, this show was a pretty standard supernatural mystery story with a group of kid exorcist-detectives helping classmates and townsfolk solve paranormal incidences, and it bombed. It had mediocre, even bad, reviews. It tanked in the ratings because kids thought it was boring. It was just a money pit for the company. So when the American studio agreed ro the deal they asked, "Hey, what do you want us to do with this exactly? And the Japanese company was like, "Just keep the kids' names the same. And since the monsters largely come from Japanese myth and urban legend, keep the names the same and make sure they're named in the episodes. Also, keep the resolution of each mystery the same. Other than that, do what you want. Just get this piece of shit off of our hands!"
So that's what they did. They just had the VAs improv all the dialogue and told them to have fun

I’ve never seen Ghost Stories, and I love anime. It’s my first time hearing reviews about it, you guys lol. My favorite anime’s are Dragonball, One Piece, Naruto,Hunter X Hunter, Slam Dunk, Yu Yu Hakusho, Fist Of The North Star, Sakigake Otokojuku, City Hunter, Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure My Hero Academia, Dr. Stone, and Black Glover.
If you watch Ghost Stories def watch the dub. The sub is fine but the anime is just "meh alright" without the English script
