That dub was absolutely legitimate and that makes it better
People wont probably understand me, but Ghost Stories dub is still the funniest dub, Shin Chan is close 2nd. Its almost neck and neck
The Japanese dub underperformed. The studio wanted to make even a minor profit out of it and gave the US studio the green light to do anything they wanted.
So it basically became a studio-funded anime parody much like TeamFourStar or Little Kuriboh... Except the jokes are drastically more unhinged.
So legit that the dub is actually on Crunchyroll

Looking it up, apparently the voice actors were told to “do whatever it takes to sell the show.” So the original script was thrown out and the rest is history.
The only limitation they had is that they had to follow the steps to how a ghost was defeated or something like that.

And yes, this was the actual dub. We recorded all 20+ episodes very earnestly, and our only goal was to make it as offensively funny as possible. It was something really crazy and unique to be a part of.

What does abridging means?
@@lumanianilin1198 Basically taking the footage from a series and doing your own voice over for it, for the sake of comedy. The best ones I've seen follow the narrative of the show, but change up character personalities, call out flaws in the original, and sometimes make tweaks to how the plot gets to different points in order to make the progression more satisfying. The comedy's the main point of it, though.
For examples, I'd advice checking out Team Four Star for their abridged series of Dragon Ball Z, Hellsing, and Final Fantasy VII, as well as Little Kuriboh's take on Yugioh and Something Witty Entertainment's take on Sword Art Online. Plenty of others out there, but I consider them the real powerhouses of abridging
I'm pretty sure when the team found out that they could do what they wanted with it they sat in a room and got drunk or high can't remember which one and just came up with lines and shit
With a dub like this I'm guessing they did both.
The director and the actors talk about it a lot, and from what I remember the director was naturally just a really funny guy so he essentially made lines up on the spot and allowed the actors to freestyle on some scenes too. It was a really fun process for the people involved and from what I remember it was kind of like a game to see what people could come up with every day
they were drunk and had contests to see who could say the most offensive things. They basically had free range to say whatever so long as the premise of the episode was met.

Same it really is funny for the wrong reasons but it is one of the funniest animes you will ever find im dying just thinking of the anime 😂😅

These jokes are more than 15 years old and to see that they're still cracking people up just humbles me every fucking day. And it is WAY flattering and HUGELY funny watching you guys' reaction to the show. I have a YT channel I've never done anything with. I need to get off my ass and make some videos answering your questions and the hundred others I see get asked. There were way too many to answer you here and clog up your feed. But lemme say two things and this is coming from a w/d and I mean this as a compliment. One: Goatee was fucking HILARIOUS when he did that doubletake, then looked at the camera with heartattack seriousness, and cracked a line that was delivered with the same vintage Warner Bros hilarity the GS cast delivered. i wonder if they know that the japanese team told them they can basically do what they want for the dub with a few exceptions (mainly names of characters including ghosts, the way the ghosts die, and the overall story should remain) other than that they told the dubbing team to do whatever they wanted to make this anime as successful as possible

What's amazing for those who don't know. The show sucked so bad in Japan that when
Ghost Stories was picked up for dubbing by ADV Studios in 2005 they were told to "do whatever it took to sell the show." The only condition was that the basic story and names of major characters and ghosts had to remain intact, but everything else was fair game.
This was crude just to be crude.... why did I kind of love it 😂😂😂
I own it on DVD and it is the legit dub. I invited a friend over for an episode or two and it ended up an all nighter. Absolutely an 11/10!

yes, this was a legitimate dub and the voice actors got complete control of what to say, only rule was to keep the original storyline, since the Japanese version kinda was bad and failed, they just let the VA’s do what they want
I don't know why the strange rumor spread, but this animation has achieved good results in Japan and is a TV series that has received great reviews in neighboring Korea.
I'm Korean and this series is re-aired every Halloween season on a children's TV show.
The reason why the English version is different from the original is because the emotions of us Asians and the emotions of people in the West are different.

This premiered in Japan and did horrible before they even talked about having a DUB. Because of it, the creators gave the creative power to the English dub team to do whatever as long as they don’t change the overall plot and character names. And that was the best decision ever.

Hillary Haag is one of my favorite voice actresses.
From what I know, this anime bombed hard in Japan so when it came time to dub it, they were given free reign to do whatever they wanted as long as certain things weren't changed like the ghosts and how to beat them, I think. They basically made the first abridge series as the official dub, and it was way more successful.
One correction. There were no writers for the dub. The anime bombed so bad in Japan when (the now defunct) ADV got the rights to it it was already dead in the water. Thus the producers let the voice actors just have at & freestyle the entire series.
Also for context on all the Jew & homophobic jokes ADV was based out of Houston, TX, USA.
Not true, there WAS a writer, he even did an interview, yes a lot of dialogues were improv but there also was a writer, they all went ham as the show progressed especially the actors, so they let them do their thing and chose the best takes.
Actually, Jazzler's closer to correct. The first episode was scripted but after that I wrote it as we recorded so it would be loose, unpredictable, and crazy. So you could say it was adlibbed, but I'm a writer so legally it's writing. The actors (well, moreso the comics in the cast) added about 20 lines. I'll take a good line from anybody! Like that whole bit about the guy not pulling out like he SAID he would? That's all Tommy Drake. Tommy told us that story in the studio while Adam was syncing up his previous line and that beat the fuck out of anything I was gonna make up. And if you'll notice, most of it's off-flap so I didn't have to adjust too much, I just had Tommy say the real life story in character.
The Jewish jokes were just like the Muslim jokes and the sexist jokes and all the other shit that's said. When I decided to go that route, I made sure we offended EVERYBODY. That way everyone would know there's no way we were serious about any of it. But, confession: I was harder on the Republicans because it was during the Bush administration, the Christians because I'm a liberal Christianic and the religious right could not be any more wrong, and the gay jokes were cuz I'm a big fag. Like I said, we attacked everybody.
I like that you try to blame the most offensive bits on Texas, but fail to know that Houston is a strong Democrat city. Surprise! The dub was written by a liberal gay man.
@@md_vandenberg Kinda hard to yell surprise at someone who lives in Houston, Tx themselves for over 30yrs. ADV was located on Bintliff in the Westpark/Westchase area. Ya know, before they put that till road thru it. Before it was renamed the Ghandi district.
Also Houston being a Democratic city in a Republican county, in a Republican state, doesn't actually mean anything when Houston itself has a non-partisan election (ballot) system.

In my opinion Ghost Stories is one of the best and my favorite anime of all time, I loved it 😂👍🏾💯.
Only people who have no sense of humor would find it offensive over hilarious comedy, Ghost Stories for me is the anime South Park.

Behind the scenes fact: Ghost Stories dub DO NOT have an official script. The studio in Japan told the Dubbed Studio to do whatever they wanted which turned into this goldmine comedy.

When I saw this anime like 5 years ago I taught this was an abridged version but when I search a little bit deeper I realized this was the actual dub lol. FYI the first video is saw was the "not because you're a rabbit but because you're black" made me rolling on the floor lmao
The parts where the jabber nonsense and when the girl was like "Hold up a second....but this hurricane" were the voice actors finding dumb ways to sync up with the lips and dialogue. I love it.
A lot of the dub was improvised. The first person to record would get to do pretty much whatever they wanted and the other actors would have to play off that.

I have never seen Brazilian and Italian dub. adv dub, animax proper one and original Japan language. Maybe I became triple languages-watcher.

This is the official dub. The original Japanese version didn't do well, so the American dubbing company was given rules to follow. Including doing whatever they wanted with the dubbing. As long as the plot and name stayed the same.

This was indeed a proper dub in the states. This is what I watched on Adult Swim in the 2000s when I got up early enough to get ready for school on the weekdays.
I think it was AdultSwim where I first saw the dub? Wherever it first aired here in the States, it was unmatched and legendary.

There’s are a few languages in Africa, like Xhosa, that have clicking noises as part of the language. Between that and the name, I’m guessing it was an edgy racist joke. I think there are also languages that use whistling. Cool from linguistics, bad for early 2000s edgy humor.
As far as I’ve heard, someone got the rights to this show dirt cheap because it didn’t sell well in Japan, so they said screw it and did a gag dub.

I'm loving how people are still talking about this dub, even after so many years went by, when it came out . The Japanese was boring and didn't sell, so they said keep the story plot the same then do whatever with the dub, as long as it sells and it sell all right. Lots of people laugh and still are laughing about it all today.

Ghost Stories was picked up for dubbing by ADV Studios in 2005. According to voice actor Greg Ayres, they were told to "do whatever it took to sell the show." The only condition was that the basic story and names of major characters and ghosts had to remain intact, but everything else was fair game. To that end, director Steven Foster reworked the show into a pure Gag Dub by throwing out nearly all of the original script. When the voice actors were called in to record scenes, whoever got there first would set the tone and subject for the scene, which meant the other cast members had to follow in those footsteps. This approach produced a dub full of random characterization, fourth-wall-breaking jokes, political and cultural references.
Even with context, this show is still all over the place
That is one of the 2 legitimate English dubs for the series. The first one was true to the original story completely. However, company got the license to do the series in a bundle of series. When they saw it was already done, they wanted to do something different so people would buy their version as well. Their version became more popular.
