How about using clp or something to remove the rust/ clean it up? Are there rotors on these like a pad brake system?
Scotty Kilmer i just did it on my Pontiac torrent but brake won’t stop the car
Scotty Kilmer, please suggest more than just a jack under the vehicle, like jack stands or bricks. Some people suck at life.

Where do I buy this “ common sense “
It's all fun and games until you do your own drum brakes
ki jssn just didn’t my first set of drum brakes on my 3rd gen camaro and oh my god did I want to roll it down a cliff😂
Jajja it happened to me too.
@@itzmckrispy9318 i agree 😂 i thought the same thing when i was doing my moms for her . im so happy my car has all disc brakes 😂😂
LOL yes!
Scottie mah man thank you... Now i know how to do it but first i gonna buy me a car... With drum brakes on the back...
Great video, fast and well detailed unlike those 30 minute pointless videos. Thanks for saving me time and money Scotty!
Thank you Scotty .
Can I agree more? Lol, I just said the exact same thing to my wife
Yeah I thought the same thing
AMEN!
Without a doubt the best diy car maintenance video on RUclips. No 5 minute introduction, no super slow explanations just straight to the point with everything you need
00:27 seconds...seconds ! ! into the vid and he starts jacking the car up. No explanation about how important brakes are. Like , oh ya? when did this change?
Your video was short and to the point without over complicating this. I have seen many videos on this subject but by far yours makes the most sense
you spin the back wheels, if they spin freely you tighten the adjuster until they drag just a bit
Okay here are my pointers after using this video!
1) There is no replacement for cutters when grabbing springs, needle nose pliers will slip.
2) Be sure to grease ALL contact points, my car had 8 of them. Be sure to look at the bottom meeting points too.
3) You might not need to change your drum brakes if they are squeaking, you might just need to disassemble and re-grease. My car with over 100k still had the same amount of shoe left as a new set.
4) Use brake cleaner on your new drum inside contact points to remove any gunk from the factory.
5) Put your car in neutral and spin the drums, they should bind up and stop pretty quickly. If you don't get it tight enough you will still roll with your e-brake fully engaged. If it is too tight, you will have to use screws to remove the drum and start over. Take the time to get this right.
I have never done drum brakes before and this video was exceptional. Clear, concise and to the point. Thanks Scotty!
heck, follow this video, all systems are rather similar. And if you're confused take digital pictures BEFORE you take the parts off.
same process, adjusters are all slightly different, but if you do one side you can compare it to the other side if you get confused putting it back together.
You really made it look easy. I'm starting to think that I can do a rear shoes replacement too.
+Phillip Ivey - I SECOND Phillip lol ,I have to replace my wheel cylinders and after finding out I have to take the brake shoes off to get the wheel cylinder off I might as well do those too,but I've never done them and I watched some guy wrestle with a set and he didn't look lie he was having much fun ! Hey Scotty ,You Da Man !! ,Oh and MY question is do I REALLY have to take the shoes off to get the wheel cylinder out ??
Hardest part is removing the drum.
@@iancc86 Depends on where the car is from. My car doesn't have much rust at all, but my dad's car was so rusted he drove 3 miles with the lug nuts loosened and the wheel still wouldn't come off.
Drum brakes require p l u!
@@randomvideosn0where Jack it up, set it in a stand and hit it with the base of your palms. Mine get stuck every single time and this works so well. No idea what kinda damage that might be doing, if any 😂
@larbyrne I've already responded to this. I didn't go under the car, AND the jack is in the middle of the back on concrete. IF the jack lost pressure, the car would just end up sitting on the jack a bit lower. Scotty
I love this guy!
He's a life saver...

3:20.....is that a cutter? if accidently cut off those spring?
my little pony They get a good grip. it'd take alot of squeezing to cut those springs with that. try doing that with pliers it's a bitch. dull little cutters work fine.
Knows what he's talking about and has a great way about him. Seems like a nice guy too.
seriously Scotty. I need a DVD of a load of your videos, to watch when I'm at sea and can't get signal.
Chris hedley changing the brake shoes on a ship is at least a 2 man job.
you should also change the ships tires while you have them off
@@PhoenixT1953 what's the ships tires?
@@inakiland the wheel.
Are you a captain?
depends entirely upon model and make of car and if other parts like cylinders need replacing
Scotty is a true master! 4 minutes long video and any mechanically inclined person could tackle this job. Great work Scotty👍👍
@spelunkerd I use high quality jacks and work fast. so I often don't use jack stands, they slow me down. Only if I'm crawling under there will I use a jack. PLUS, I work on a concrete surface which is VERY stable. Scotty
@clint4Now you pull the wheels off, remove the drum and look at the linings to see if they're thicker than a dime. If thinner, replace them. Scotty
and this is why you have 1.6M subscribers lol. Straight to the point w/ no complication.
SCOTTY , MY MAN!!!!!! Love your stuff and how you get to the point and educate everyone out there who don't have a clue on how to fix their ride. Your vids are educational and informative and truly appreciative because I've followed some of your directions on fixing my ride or a family member of mine. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👏👏👏👏👏 Stay healthy and safe and looking forward to watching more of your stuff from a fellow veteran.
We love you Scotty Kilmer. I am a Mechanic apprentice and I learn more to brushen up the little knowledge I have already by all your concise videos.
This is the best brake shoe video of all time
Hahahaha!!! Yes!! Yes it is the greatest brake show video of all time!
Scotty dose it in five minutes. Me in my garage 4 Hours lol
When you've rear drum brakes the 1st thing you do when you get ready to replace them is to look in the internet to find a rear breaks system for that vehicle...
Scotty! I just wanna say I love your videos. They are so helpful and simplistic to understand. You make me feel like i can accomplish anything with your great attitude as well!
Holy moly! Gotta say.... I learned more from you from the first minute of the video than from all the "mechanics" I know in 27 years. They always just give me a smug look and say " oh that ones easy"....
Thank you for this tutorial.
Thanks for the excellent brake shoe DIY tutorial. Your close up shots are superb, and the video really helps in learning how to get the job done.
"EH" - Scotty Kilmer
I will start reading my owner's manual in Scotty's voice from now on.
Funny : ))
Scotty! Maaan I can't tell u enough how thankful I am to u for literally teaching me how to become a 100% DIYer!! I now do all my own work on my car, and it runs like a brand new car!! And it's a 97!!! Thanks for takin the time to make all these video lessons for us FORMER rookie mechanics!! You're one cool cat! If I'm ever in Texas , I'm gonna take you n your wife out to lunch. I ain't NEVER goin to another shop again!!
Stay cool man!
FANTASTIC. Short, sweet, and to the point. You just saved me a lot of money and gave me gratification and empowerment. Best drum brake video on the internet!
scotty u r the man.💪 👍
haha awesome video you are a great teacher and entertainig
Whenever I need old school advice, Scotty's there! Bloody legend!
I haven't done drum brakes for years and it's as easy as I remember.
Thanks mate!
Thanks for video man. I'm a fleet tech and I just did my first drum brakes today on a late-model Hyundai. Story on RO: "Removed and replaced rear drums and tested op. Noise eliminated. Return to service". Thanks again!
This guy is so funny, lmao.... I watch his videos just for the laugh sometimes
na, you just get em close, then back up and slam the brakes on a few times. The auto adjusters then make then perfect.
I was just about to ask where you adjust the drums and here you just answered my question. I am wanting to do this on my 2005 Scion xB. I will take a good picture before i take anything apart.
Thanks, Scotty
Hey you made this so much more simple than all the other videos! I’m now confident in changing my drum brakes by myself. Thanks !!
Your video is 8 Years old Scotty, and still helped me to do my rear drum brakes on a 2000 Pontiac Grand AM. Great video, thank you!
Drum brakes are drum brakes…lol
Lol that ending in the pickup truck was funny. Your poor wife has her hands full lol
You can't be afraid to take chances ! Just go and do it and save money !
Very nice demonstration, I just did the rear brakes on my car following this video. And it's good to see someone who doesn't take himself *too* seriously, even with 40-some years of experience.
@moofushu You have to put a pressure tester gauge in the number one cylinder, then see if the pressure rises as you crank it toward what you assume is TDC Scotty
Scotty, loved the video, thanks BUT you need to use JACK STANDS!!! Safety 1st sir.
Gotta agree, especially with you pulling and pushing on the springs.
Love the short to the point videos. One of the best instructional formats on the tube.
I too like to live dangerously.
Put the tire under the car if car falls it lands on the tire. That’s what I doo.
@MiIesTailsPrower So basically safety first then, :D
He is not getting under the car, so he is safe.
Good video but you’re missing 2 main points:
1) the emergency brake lever transfer to the new shoe.
2) lubricants on the auto adjuster.
There is also a 2 shoe retaining spring seats. You only added the top one when fastened the shoes to the pin. In addition, forgot to mention how to adjust the adjuster from the access hole on the backing plate.
Good video though.
I love how all your how to videos are 4x shorter than others of the same subject and much clearer most of the time!
Outstanding procedure of instructing mr. Kilmer! excellent!!!
Scotty Kilmer was the inspiration for Saul Goodman
"Why not do it yourself?" - Because i don't want to die
pussy!
I just did my drums and brakes today on my 02 Toyota Celica GT thank you 🙏 MR. Scotty your video was very helpful 😁
Scotty makes every job a simple task, love his videos!
Drum brakes are so dumb... should be called dumb brakes instead
haha thats a good one, I guess they were smart for there time, it is just old technology replaced by disc brakes which ARE much better. biggest thing I dislike about drum brakes is they overheat on long downhlls if you apply brakes too much and then they stop working!!! also they dont work nearly as well as disc and significantly harder to change.
it could, start by pulling off the brakes on the back and checking there. But if there is still some shoes left, tighten the adjuster on the brake cables, they do stretch over time
Thanks for the instructions, it was pretty easy to do on my 97' Ford Mondeo, I actually ended up changing the cylinders as well and bleed the rear brake lines, it's braking really well except for the handbrake, it won't hold, you actually have to pull it hard to stop the car on a hill, I've adjusted both drums and the handbrake leveler but it still requires force to pull it and lock the rear wheels.
Brakes are fine otherwise, they're holding up very well, no weird noises or ABS errors.
Love ya, Scotty. Haven't done this since I was 13, w/ my dad. Now have to do an old minivan. Good times!
@SuperKasper92 just the brake spring piars I use in this video, all auto parts stores sell em cheaply enough. Scotty
Love your videos. Quick, simple and TO THE POINT!!
Thanx scotty. 9 years later. I got my dream project truck. 92 bronco, going to change it this weekend
@Matthew55904 Only on one shoe on each side, but the cable does go to the left and right side of couse. Scotty
that was the most intelligently done brake job I have ever seen ! If I wasn't a believer before I sure as hell am now. You rock
Wow I always thought changing rear brake shoes could be a hassle but you showed it to be really easy, thanks for the help scotty!
Well done video. I have seem some crap ones, Scotty - this is the best video I have seen. Very detailed. Quick and to the point. Thumbs up..
Thank god for people like you Mr.Scotty, I also watched another video of yours that was very helpful, I think it was the one about the code reader to make sure used cars been sold not to have their codes erased by the buyer, greetings from Toronto,Canada sir.
thanks Scotty ! it's been 20 some years since i did a brake job. your presentation was great.
you refreshed my memory. i used the simple tools you used. thanks again !!
Scotty I was the one who asked you to make a video for break shoes and Thank You. I knew it was an involved job. Looking around at the auto parts stores I'm starting to think they need a "Scotty" section with all the products you recommend in your videos. Great video again, simple and to the point.
I used the bolt trick to get off my brake drums on my 1996 dodge Avenger. I sprayed some WD40 around the lug holes and in the bolt holes and it worked like a charm! Thanks Scotty! 12-26-2020
Awesome video Scott!!! Enjoyed it so much I took it all apart and did it again. Thanks again.
Straight to the point. I love this guy!
Thank you Scotty, by far the best video on rear brakes!!!
they could be loose, check the bolts. If not, check the suspension by jacking if up and pulling on the tire and seeing if anything has play
@youfrancis That's to adjust the automatic adjuster IF you have problems with it. Scotty
Fantastic video. Exactly what I needed. Short and THOROUGH. Also had some tips to look out for. Thank You!
good one scotty.....simple demonstration better than all videos on how to change brake pad on youtube...keep the good job..
@Drygals A micrometer measures wear, and you would measure how thick the drum is and if it's out of round by measuring the diameter in various spots for accuracy. Scotty
My drum didn't fit anymore...😮
Thanks for all the videos scotty! Very informative and do not put you to sleep
Thanks for all you do scotty. I look to your videos first. Keep up the awesome work my friend. Once again. Thank you
Thank you for another outstanding tutorial and your Service, Airborne!
Thank you good sir!! I will be doing my own drums this weekend!!
Fast and informational, Beam me up Scotty!
So it's the break shoe that you replace... My brother told me my car had break drums and I was going into Autozone asking for it. They tried to sell me pads and insisted my car uses them but I was like uh...no it doesn't, but I also don't know what i'm supposed to be replacing lol So I kept asking for the drum. Felt so stupid and i'm so thankful for your straightforward video. It actually looks pretty fun replacing these. Gonna give it a shot.
Love your videos. Fast, to the point, and gives ya all the info ya need.
I M HUGE FAN OF YOUR WORK...... THAT THE PERFECT EXAMPLE WORK WITH FUN.
Great refresh for my memory, Thanks
Im currently at Ft Cambell doing EIB, great video!!!
Scotty can say more in 5 minutes than all the others can say in an hr. thank you sir
thanks for your help !!! i did the rear breaks on my 207 Peugeot
Scotty you're great. You made that look so easy.
this is beautifully detailed, thank you scotty!
I just did rear shoe change on a mazda protege and i can promise you its not as easy as he makes it out to be...even alot of mechanic's dont like changing these brakes. If its gonna be your first time doing it like it was in my case,id recommend having someone thats done them before help you out a little, believe me it can save you alot of time and frustration.
@2LateIWon God, haven't worked on one of those things in ages. I use edelbrock brand new ones these days, they are much better carbs, and new ones are priced quite reasonably. Scotty
great advice on using the opposite side for reference...thanks Scotty!!!
@shoujiliuzhijun yes, bigger is better. The clamp you grab the open end with a big pliars and force it into the shoe. Then there is a gap on the other side, and you whack that with a screwdriver and a hammer and it flies off. Scotty
Excellent video short and to the point!
Thanks for not wasting my time by explaining it straight forward. That's all we need to know to get started
@96integra02 there are bleeder screws on the inside of the wheel cylinders. You open them up while someone steps on the brakes to get the air out. Scotty
Great video. I loved your recommendations. I can't wait to get dirty while fixing my rear brakes. Thanks Scotty!
I JUST LOVE YOU SCOTTY KILMER! Your such a PRO!
Scotty is the best! Only problem is that if you're old shoes are worn down far enough then the rotor won't come off. Unless you open up the automatic adjuster before you take it off. On my Yaris this can be done by opening a little hole plugged by a rubber plug and turning the gear with a flat head. It was a bummer that this information was not in this video because I ended up snapping pieces of my brake assembly by trying to wrench it off with the screws like Scotty said.
Your an absolute legend scotty
Best video i have seen on this subject, thanks a MILLION!!!!!
Thank you Scotty, you're the best.
I absolutely despise working on drum brakes haha, so much more work than discs, awesome video!
