for first timer eating filipino food, balut is not a great way to start for real. their reaction however was not disrespectful, it just too exotic for them. also almost 3 weeks old is like fully develop. should have gotten the 16 day balut so they wouldnt be shocked as much as this episode

    • @eduardochavacano

Meanwhile, Mexicans eat Escamoles (ant egg sacs), Chicatanas (flying ants), and tacos de sesos (cow brains), just to name a few. Colombians have food like Criadilla soup (calf’s testicles and El Cuy (guinea pig). All cultures have food that others may find “weird”. It’s the dramatics that I find off putting.

  • @chrismanahan1533

Whoever made this lineup to introduce Filipino food to Latinos that were not familiar with Filipino dishes, they really did a bad job. Unless their goal is to make bad impressions for Filipino food to these people? Why start with balut, to make everyone scared or disgusted of the other upcoming dishes? Then 2nd is bbq skewers which are not really very traditional Filipino dish, even Americans have a version of skewered barbeque. Then last we have sisig, but not really authentic ingredients, so basically just fried/roasted pork belly cut in small pieces, lol. Next time, make Adobo, lumpiang shanghai, real sisig, or kare-kare. And I think Chicken Afritada or pork menudo are easy to make and very underrated (pork liver can be optional).

Balut or Fertilized egg is a comfort food not only found in the Philippines but as well as in Cambodia, Vietnam and Southeast Asia. It is said to originate in China. To be honest its the same thing when you eat Fresh Raw Mussels. I remember buying it when I was a kid from a grandma balut vendor she was always selling it during the night.

They always eat balut the wrong way. The other guy did it right. He brought a bottle of Tapatio. As an Asian, we or I of course sprinkle it with salt. Others use vinegar. If you got guacamole or salsa, add it to it. We or I typically don't eat the egg white. It's hard. The more yellow the better meaning less chick. As an Asian we go extreme. Some we prefer an older balut. Meaning less whites and yellow. Meaning more protein.

we are just not used to it. we already don’t eat duck very much and we think of the idea of eating a baby duck inside of an egg as weird as we usually just eat unfertilized eggs

I think it's the aesthetics and the idea of it that throws people off
It goes to show that pinoys don't really eat with their eyes, the taste is more important

at least give them some salt and spiced vinegar. filipinos dont eat it without seasoning it first.
