    Personally I think it's the colour, over time it's wrecks havoc with the integrity of the hair no matter how careful you are, my advice is to trim the fuzzy ends perhaps half inch or an inch a month and stick to a very few core products that your hair loves, it's what I did when I had this issue a couple years ago and my hair has never been healthier, I wish you the best.

      I agree with you 100%. with the highlights I was okay but I think with the ombré being so MUCH color (esp at the bottom) it definitely caused issues over time!

      @@MsLong94 if you’re using permanent color it can still cause damage because it lifts the cuticle quite a bit. Not as much as bleach but it can still cause some damage unfortunately.

    I’m so happy to hear your POV on the whole length thing. I never understood the naturals obsession with length and specifically the need for waist length curls.
    I prefer shorter hair my hair was in a tapered cut for years-it’s my favorite cut- now I’m at neck length just to try something new but this is a long as I want it for now. I’m still thinking about going back to my taper. It’s just a vibe. It’s easy and no matter what I wake up with a dope hairstyle. Just wake up fluff the curls and go!

    Olaplex, olaplex, olaplex! Especially if you’re going to color curly hair… I never color/lighten my hair without it. Toning can damage your hair… if the toner requires developing it is likely lifting to some degree and depositing color. I recommend the following.
    1. Cut the damaged ends
    2. Get an Olaplex stand alone treatment
    3. Get a deep conditioner, do a deep conditioner every 2 weeks.

    This really resonates with me now. My hair was about your length and I got a keratin treatment six months ago and cut it to shoulder length because I was sick of the undefined curls. Now I want my curls back and I’m growing them back out again. I no longer feel obligated to have long hair anymore. Honestly don’t think I’ll grow my hair long again. I enjoy the ease of shorter hair.

    I'm sorry about your hair troubles but not surprised. When the stylist initially dyed your hair, she applied vitamin c powder to your hair to remove buildup. Anything acidic with a ph below a 4 will have the ability to break down whatever it's applied to. That includes your hair. It will not know when the buildup ends and your hair begins. It will simply eat everything until it is rinsed off. The ph of vitamin c is below a 3. The way you've described your hair lately as being dry, frizzy, difficult to receive moisture, and won't hold moisture for more than 2 days are all characteristics of high porosity hair. A common misconception about high porosity hair is that it takes in water more easily than medium and low porosity. In actuality, all hair porosities have the ability to take in water easily it just depends on how the water is applied. For example, low porosity hair takes in water easily in a shower. It will react to the ph of the water by expanding and the water will get in. However when it is submerged in water, it will float. High porosity hair will have a difficult time taking in water in the shower. The water will sit on the outside of the cuticles which are standing out like mini umbrellas to your hair shaft. But submerged in water, it will quickly take it in and sink. It's not uncommon for hair to become more porous after being color treated, but it is not normal for it to change porosities entirely. That's why I believe you have acid damage. The acid ate away parts of your hair that was holding your cuticle in place and now your cuticles are permanently open. High porosity hair is manageable. After all, many people grow it naturally from their heads. The hair growing out of your scalp and the remaining undamaged parts of your hair are not high porosity. And it may become difficult to keep your hair from breaking off at the line of demarcation where the two porosities meet should you choose not to cut it. Sorry for the long essay. I wish you all the best.

      I have a shower filter with vitamin c. Do you think that could cause dryness? I’ve had some dry issues but as of late have tried the wash and go technics by blackgirlcurls and with the products suggested I seem to be getting back to having more moisture in my hair. (I never really used much oils or butters so this was not a stretch for me). I recently decided to deter from the products and used something I had purchased previously but never got around to using and my WNG was dry. I still do have the filter though. Your take on this was interesting. Oh and I also use color but it’s used every 8-10 weeks.

    • @ritam1588
      @ritam1588 2 года назад +3

      @@Listen2me400 Acids are only problematic for hair in concentrated amounts. A ph below a 4 would indicate a high concentration. Hair actually prefers an acidic environment which is why most hair products are formulated with a ph of 4.5 - 6. Even though hair can tolerate a ph down to a 4, most people's scalps cannot. Which is why companies try to keep their products within this range also referred to as ph balanced. So as long as the ph of your water is over a 4 it wouldn't be a problem. And you could easily test this with ph strips or a ph meter.

My advice: Get the ends cut, be extra gentle when working with your hair and wear it in “ protective styles “ for a few months. I’m sure you will figure it out, you got this .❤️

    I have dyed my hair over the years and it’s probably colour damage that can affects your ends. Also styling with only gel can be quite drying on the hair. Perhaps try out a cream gel? The Mielle Organics Rosemary Mint Cream Gel is my go to and has strong hold and gives moisture

    • @msbell221982

      Yeah it’s definitely the only gel styling that’s drying her hair out. My hair used to look frizzy like that when I was using dandruff shampoo and conditioner every wash. I thought i had to cut my hair. Turns out it was super dry. The remedy was to stop using the shampoo/conditioner and start hot oil treatments. Overall I’m over natural hair and have been straightening my hair most wash days.

  • @EricaLandWriter
    @EricaLandWriter 2 года назад +14

    Color definitely could be the culprit, but I wonder too if it’s leaving out the cream stylers and just using gel. I’ve cut down on using gel because no matter which one I tried, it was drying out my hair because of the dry heat climate I live in. I’ve been slowly working it back in for hold, but cream and oil have been helping a lot.

    • @britjj5126

      Yep! I tried the whole new school regimen of just gel and after a while even my stylist remarked how dried out my hair was. She herself uses cream styler on her curls and they are gorgeous and healthy so I’ve gone back to using them and my hair feels and looks hydrated.

    Hi Alyssa, I love that you're soooo honest about your hair journey with us.
    I believe it mostly has to do with the colour and the fact that your hair constantly rubbing against your clothing.
    My advice to you is that you find YOUR MEDIUM and cut to a length that you're gonna be happy with....it's hair....we learn from mistakes....we move on more informed....it'll grow back.
    Also I think you need to find the products that works for your hair and STICK TO JUST THAT !!!
    I' ve been through what you're going through currently, I shaved my hair off seven (7) yes seven (7) times already and it grew back.
    One thing for sure I'M NEVER COLOURING MY HAIR AGAIN no matter how healthy it is....colour goes into our hair shaft and dries our hair from inside out, maybe this is why it took you soo long to notice.
    Get regular (every 8- 10 weeks) trim....deep condition balancing both protein and moisture each week and you'll be on the road to recovery trust me.
    P.s I'm here with you learning from you and also sharing my knowledge with you.

    First off do what makes you happy girl period.
    But (assuming you haven’t done any of these yet) maybe try building a routine focusing on intense moisture and locking that moisture in. (Clay washes, humectants in your conditioners/deep treatments, hot oil treatments to help seal in the water/moisture). Along with a nice protein based routine, you know we love our girl briogeo, but maybe also olaplex/curl smith, maaaybe aphogee (just to give your longer/older strands more umph to help withstand the constant friction. Also with styling, maybe going back to incorporating creams to help maintain moisture! Hope this helps :)

    Love this video. You have to do what is best for you and what makes you happy and healthy. I will say, and I know people were talking about this months ago, I did the Cardi B natural hair mask last night and it really infused lots of moisture into my hair and made my hair clump like crazy. I altered the ingredients a bit, but altered it to fit my hair. Maybe it will work for your hair too. The recipe I used was completely blended avocado, honey, mayo, egg, banana, olive oil, and water. My hair thanked me after. Sending positive energy in your ongoing hair journey.

    I love how real and honest this video was. I absolutely love your curls and I think they look just as beautiful as I always see them. I don't know if this theory makes any sense but I find that with my hair (3b finer med density curls) although I've had it long...the longer it got it would start to look very stringy and less full. It is almost like my hair only looks healthy at a shorter length. Can you also be struggling with protein overload?

    Thanks so much for always keeping it real. Thanks so much for realizing and sharing that the choice was up to us. I would love for you to try Curlsmith’s new leave-in oil spray & see if it makes any difference. Also, could the mud be drying it out? The other thing that happened to me is that I was using a brand for years that was awesome, then was sold to another company and changed (DevaCurl). Now I’ve become aware that this happens a lot! So, somehow, now we all have to start tracking which brands sell or make other major changes to ingredients, processing, or chemicals. Your damage is what is routinely happening to people at the beginning of the damage cycle. And I know that it’s your job to use a lot of unknown products. For instance, Olaplex is now a no-no; lots of damage is now being experienced.

    I love your hair. After watching many curly influencers I was bless you find you. You are the only one that has hair close to mine. You have been a huge inspiration to me. I wanted to give up on my curly hair many times, but your instructions really work for me. I get my hair colored dark golden brown by a professional hair stylist just to cover the gray about every 2 to 3 months. I stop getting blond highlights because of damage. I get my ends cut on a regular basis. I use Olaplex 3, as you suggested to help keep my hair healthy. Now that my hair is longer it get frizzy quicker, So I might get more trimmed off the ends next time. I will always choose healthy hair over length. Damaged frizzy long hair is not cute.
    You don’t need to big chop, just get a professional stylist to cut your hair a little shorter, and I believe you will be happy

    Nope, I completely understand. I don’t have color treated hair, but Before my hair touched my shoulders, my crown area use to get defined but now that it’s longer it’s always frizzy from root to end and I trim it but nothing works. It’s extremely frustrating and sometimes I just don’t like bothering with my hair anymore and quarantine made it worst.

  • @cherrishpryor7568
    @cherrishpryor7568 2 года назад +3

    Appreciate your honesty. Maybe cut the frizzy part and do a reset to focus on healthy hair as well. Nothing wrong with wanting long hair, health hair just needs to be the focus as well. You also might need to trim your hair regularly. That way it keeps growing and you don’t have the frizzy ends and it will always look healthy.
    I think the color/highlights is probably the main problem. I always had more issues when I got the highlights. I am now natural, but I love to look back at some of my cute pictures when I had straight hair.
    I know you do a lot of stuff with your hair for us, but the health of you and your hair must come first. Best of luck to you.

    You probably have thought of this already, but have you booked a consultation with a hair stylist? Regardless I agree with you. I think your hair being longer and having been colored over time can have an affect on the look and feel. The only suggestion I have other than booking a consultation would be to try and keep your ends tucked in two braids or twists for a few days out of the week and then every other week you can probably just use “lubricating” products like leave ins and creams.
    (Also do you think that maybe your hair could be naturally frizzy? And you haven’t seen your hair in it’s “natural” state and it’s shocking?)

    I was having this same issue earlier this year. I have some left over color on my ends from when I dyed my hair burgundy two years ago. I find that after a while my ends weren’t “sticking together” like the roots and mid would curl well but the ends would frizz. Even after I trimmed it. I wasn’t really using leave in or cream until I went on my trip to Barbados in June. Gels weren’t working on my hair there so I had to resort to leave in and curl cream. My ends almost instantly started behaving again and now I’ve incorporated them back into my routine. I think colored hair really needs all the moisture it can get and even moisturizing gel just wasn’t cutting it for me

      oh wooow! yea my stylist always said from day one of color that I need to stick to more moisture products, which I did. and things were great at first but I just think the color overtime isn’t agreeing with my hair anymore… or at least my ends!

  • @chloeyorke2560
    @chloeyorke2560 2 года назад +8

    I would clarify, do a protein treatment (with balancing moisturizing conditioner), and get a trim before you do anything drastic. If your hair is too porous for your liking, you could always do a gloss. Also, use a deep conditioner that promotes elasticity. Your hair at the nape is already more fine, it rubs on your clothes, the couch, car seats, etc so that’s the first to be affected especially when it’s getting longer (as you said). I highly doubt the color is doing most of this damage. It’s usually just day to day wear and tear that’ll do this over time. And as you know, color treated hair is high maintenance so you can’t take any days off with maintenance. However, it’s your hair and do what you wanna do at the end of the day 🤷🏾‍♀️

I 👂 most of hairstylist put that point about using only naturals products when you gave cosmetics to your hair by colored them. This is my advice. • @tristin8559

    Yes !!! I think it's not directly due to the color but rather to the insufficient period between each color of maintenance. And maybe 3 or 4 months between each touch up is better and doing strong protein treatments like Aphogee during the rest periods, to help the hair get in shape faster for the next touch up can be good too

    Like you said you need to speak with your colorist. Usually they send you home with an after color regimen and treatment schedule. Your colorist may not have used lightener (bleach), but she may have very well used high lift color which has the ability to lift your natural color a few shades and deposit the desired tone. The post color regimen is sooooo important.

    Maybe because you wear it down a lot and it’s longer your hair is rubbing on material and your clothing more often. Your front pieces are probably less dry as they are not touching fabric... if you’re convinced its colour damage try using Olaplex shampoo and conditioner once a week . The conditioner really saved my hair when I was experiencing probe,ms with my hairs curl integrity a few months ago.

My curls literally became straight my hairs elasticity was gone. I took me doing protein treatments for a month using products with every type of protein even though my hair is protein sensitive. Do some research into moisture overload symptoms are frizz lack of definition and not curling at all.

    I strongly feel that it's the color. I also think you may have to reevaluate your products. I know you were trying out just gels, but with color, I am not sure that's going to give you that look as well as extended wash days. You may need to go in for a trim as well. I don't think the hair looks awful, but I know that YOU know its not how you want. Lastly, I don't think the length is the issue, just speaking from personal experience as I have super long hair, minus the color. But, you're still beautiful and do whats best for you.
