I have occasionally been corrected higher when revealing the number of strokes I’ve taken, and have been mortified and embarrassed and hate the thought that people think I cheat, I now work hard to track my shots and penalties and never provide my score until I have double checked myself.

@@MA-jx9um my friend, you can rest assured people who know you know YOU! One misstep doesn’t define a man. Your commitment to accurate scorekeeping is something I’m certain your golf buddies all know about you.

Why is fudging numbers so common in golf ? It is competitiveness ? Or is that feeling of “what I should’ve got “ that’s so prevalent? A combination?

You ask a really good question. I've always thought most of us are guided by one of three philosophies.
      1. What's yours is mine and I'm going to take it.
      2. What's mine is mine and I'm going to keep it.
      3. What's mine is yours and I'm going to share it.
The prisons and streets with the lonely walks are filled with people guided by #1. Some are at large and can be found on the golf course.
