Chevy SS with ARH Long Tube headers and X pipe

  • Part 1: • 2014 Chevy SS Exhaust ...
    I recently upgraded my Chevy SS from the OEM exhaust coupled with a aftermarket mufflers (actually Solo J pipes) to ARH 1-7/8" long headers with 3" X pipe. Since the headers were obnoxiously loud with the Solo J pipes and had multiple drone frequencies, I opted to use the OEM mufflers. The OEM mufflers are still extremely loud, but there is no drone. The sound levels also track the throttle opening very linear (meaning more throttle, more sound in a very predictable and reliable fashion), where as the Solo J pipes were NASCAR loud if you accelerated from 30mph to 31mph.

    This was an excellent demo of the various combinations. As a former test analyst with an engineering firm, I realize just how much time and effort it takes to run comparison testing. To my old ears, the Solo system is by far, smoother and less raspy.

    • @SilverSurfer77
      @SilverSurfer77  7 лет назад

      Daniel Ortego thank you for the kind words! Yes the Solo sounded better (but much quieter), but that is due the fact that in OEM form there are 4 catalytic converters, H pipe, and resonator all before the final mufflers. Without cats it's gonna be raspy. I've found the loudness and harshness of my setup makes other lazy drivers pay attention!

    This comparison video has definitely sold me on headers. Great work! I too have a '14 with the Solo setup. I want the angry rasp at WOT and quiet-ish while cruising. It sounds like this would be the setup for me.

      Glad you liked it! Good luck with your build. I am in the middle of an engine rebuild/cam swap. I've decided to go with ARH high flow cats and ARH mufflers to help tame the rasp! But I do plan another video with a 4 way comparison (cats/no cats and OEM/ARH muffs).

      Thanks! Rotofab CAI, ported throttle body, long tubes, and tune, I am putting down 425 rwhp. The extra HP after the long tubes created wheel hop, and I had to get BMR trailing arms. I ran 12.5@115 in the quarter in 1600+ DA. Enough to easily walk past a Mercedes CL55 AMG which is 493 HP at the crank! I love this car!

And I have watched some interviews and such mentioning that with these upgrades it's still an everyday car. You could drive down to California and back with no problems. And with a 3 year warranty I can't beat that.

    Well they do all engine work and no exhaust. So I'm going with the ARH and the cats that come with them, so hopefully they will be more high flow I would assume. And yes I'm going to stick with the stock mufflers. When it comes down to it I can replace a cat, but I can't replace a $10,000 dollar fine for catless if I were to somehow get caught.

    That does seem loud outside of the car but it actually sounds more tame than just the Solo axlebacks. How is the noise level in the car for daily driving duties? I don't mind noise when at WOT but would prefer something more quiet when just moving along with traffic.

    • @SilverSurfer77
      @SilverSurfer77  7 лет назад

      Ryan Lewis inside the car is "loud". Not "Loud" or even "LOUD". I don't think it's bad at all, there is always a good rumble, more so than with the Solo. No drone either. I also daily the car with a 45-50 minute highway commute one way.

    • @RyeLou
      @RyeLou 7 лет назад

      SilverSurfer77 I guess that's what I'm looking for. I want something barely noticeable but at least you know it's there. I also have an hour commute each way plus two kids and a wife who won't want it too loud for normal driving. They won't care about WOT. As long as you can still have a conversation with people or using Bluetooth it's fine

    • @SilverSurfer77
      @SilverSurfer77  7 лет назад

      Ryan Lewis well just keep in mind while the in cabin sound is OK, the exterior noise is not so great, which applies with windows down. I can't wait to get the ARH axleback to tame the raspy decibels. Hopefully it will be a lower muscle rumble.

    • @andreazguy
      @andreazguy 7 лет назад

      I think I'm okay with that. I pretty much never have the windows down when anyone else is in the car, they all hate the wind. As long as it's quiet with the windows up that's what I'm looking for for now. If it becomes too much I can look at options.

    • @SilverSurfer77
      @SilverSurfer77  7 лет назад +2

      Well the final tuning session was on a Land and Sea dyno, which uses an eddy current transducer. This means it reads about 17-20% lower than an inertia based dyno, such as a Dynojet.
      Ok now that is out of the way, the Land and Sea dyno said 375rwhp. So if you figure conservatively, 375 plus 17%, that comes out to 438rwhp!
      However, at the 1/4 drag strip, my best pass was 12.4 @ 117 and that was in 1,100DA! So if you do the HP calculations, that comes out to about 434rwhp. The calculations for 0 DA comes up with a 12.2 @118 pass producing 449rwhp. But it gets better...I was on street tires! If I had drag radials and shaved another .2 or better off, what would happen!?
      Not bad for a 4,200 lbs car and driver!

    • @dustythibodaux
      @dustythibodaux 6 лет назад

      Does the x pipe increase sound?

    • @SilverSurfer77
      @SilverSurfer77  6 лет назад

      The X pipe changes the tone, but does not necessarily makes it louder. The OEM setup uses an H pipe. An H pipe balances the pressure differential on both sides of the catback, but it does NOT split or share the exhaust gasses between the pipes which gives it a lower rumble sound. An X pipe balances the pressure AND it splits the gas flow between the pipes. So the X pipe has more of a screaming sound and it is also capable of producing a little more horsepower over an H system.

      +Macy Sherman I have not heard two cars side by side to do a definite comparison, but from what everyone says, OEM (high restriction) cats do hush the sound quite a bit.
      Once SS owner was not running cats with his long tubes and it was too loud, so he added aftermarket high flow/race cats and they didn't do much to quiet the sound.

    • @macysherman9777

      +Macy Sherman Wow that's going to be a lot of money. There are cheaper options than Lingerfelter. I assume the way to get to 650 is with a supercharger. S/C's are hard on cats (meaning they are destroyed and the screens damaged and block exhaust). I would be sure to ask them what cats they are going to use and how long to expect them to last. I would imagine they would just re-use the OEM ones.
