I don't care what team you favor- you haven't really experienced anything until you are standing among the 107,000 plus crowd on game day hearing The Victors being sung by the fans! Quite an experience!
I did it once and, yes, it is incredibly impressive and I'm not a Michigan fan!

Why is this stuff never seen on TV? This would be so much better to watch than all the useless pregame commentary, predictions, etc. Seriously, this is an indispensable part of the college football experience.
Usually it won't air this because of creative rights, plus the suits at the commentary are just looking to suck money out of the customer.
In the old days, it used to be. Before ESPN got involved, the games were on either ABC or CBS, and on ABC in the '60s and '70s they always included band halftime shows. The game was more pure back then, if I can say so.

I was a MMB flag back-in-the-day and know how tough rehearsals can be. Then to perform in front of the maize and blue faithful is huge pressure. I've viewed many MMB vids and this one shows perfection across the board. YUBA & GO BLUE
The best college marching bands come from the midwest, no doubt about it. The Big Ten has the very best bands, but the Mid American Conference has some great bands as well.
Yes, but the very best band is on the West coast. Nobody else holds a candle to USCTMB. The West coast also has the very worst band, LSJUMB. My own alma mater, U of O, also has an exceedingly unimpressive band.
Western has a pretty good and HUGE band too!
HBCU's you bugging. the school might not be a prestigious. but i dare you to watch Grambling or Alabama St. band and not leave impressed.

My father idolized Benny Goodman. In 1955 he was watching halftime on tv and Benny Goodman performed "Sing Sing Sing" with the Michigan Band. My dad was so impressed with the band's ability to not just play it right but get the "swing" of it that he decided then and there he was going to go to UM. All his life he was very proud that he was a Michigan Man.

I'm an SEC boy here, from Knoxville, TN. I've seen a lot of good bands throughout this part of the country, and believe that UT's Pride of the Southland Marching Band to be the very best certainly here. Once upon a time, I would most certainly have put the Pride during the era of Dr. W.J. Julian on the level of Ohio State, Michigan, Wisconsin, USC, and Texas A&M due to our own Pregame festivities (the 'Power T', 'opening of the 'T', the unofficial fight song 'Rocky Top', etc). That level of performance declined to a point under Dr. Sousa. But Sousa was fired in 2015, and the current director of bands, Don Ryder, seems to have restored much of the framework for how each song should be played (away from the severe staccato of Sousa, while some songs are being played at high tempos). Will UT ever go back to a more Big Ten-oriented step (toes more than the current rolling of the heal-to-toe)? Who knows.
But on a whole, I agree with most in this thread: the Big Ten is home to the bulk of the nation's top college marching bands, and it has held that distinction for generations. Michigan won the first Sudler Trophy I believe in 1984, followed a few years later by Ohio State, and so on. I love the 'Blocked M' and the sort of communal spirit with the 'M Club' banner for when the players run onto the field. But it was only a few years ago that I learned how the Michigan Marching Band actually performed the first version of the 'Script Ohio' back about 80-something years ago. So you're appreciated all over the place, especially by those of us who once did a little marching of our own.

I, as a Buckeye fan, must give the MMB credit where due. The sound is great. The marching style leaves a lot to be desired.
Arthur Channell - Michigan' marching style, while different OSU's (which is great) is equally as great as OSU's-- at least during pregame. The halftime marching style changed to drum corps style. Some people find OSU's marching and overall presentation, including uniforms,while clean and precise, to be a bit stiff and rigid--military-like. I appreciate both bands.
If you want military-style bands in college marching, the Fighting Texas Aggie Band from Texas A&M actually IS military.

Apparently, Pamela Poindexter, you need to brush up on your osu history. In 1932 osu's band director was present when the University of Michigan Marching band took the field at Ohio Stadium and spelled Ohio out in script. Ted Boehm, considered an authority on the famous Ohio in script, admits that the Michigan band had indeed performed the FIRST Ohio in script.
