    I think there's one more thing to consider here: If you live in a thin-walled apartment, or you enjoy playing late at night, the electric guitar is the way to go. You can put on your headphones and jam like there's no tomorrow.

    • @pedterson
      @pedterson 7 лет назад +61

      +A Person: You can put headphones on alright. But for your neighbors the guitar will still be as noisy as any other acoustic guitar.

    • @roshaanhyder484
      @roshaanhyder484 7 лет назад +23

      pedterson Actually I plug my acoustic guitar into an amp and then connect my headphones to that amp and no one else can hear anything.

    • @pedterson
      @pedterson 7 лет назад +97

      +A Person: They don't hear the amp, but they hear the resonating body of the acoustic guitar. They don't hear what's coming out of your headphones, but they do hear what's coming out of the sound hole. Point is: A non-amplified electric guitar is much quieter than a non-amplified acoustic guitar. Of course, this difference isn't much of an issue if you live alone and inside well insulated walls.

    I prefer electric cause it's more versatile and easy for fingers. I started on acoustic and when I touched the electric guitar for the first time the only thought that was in my mind- damn , it's way more easier to play.

  • @MrTux62

    I think starting with an acoustic is better for a person to build hand-strength- once you're used to an acoustic, you will find the electric is very supple and easier to play the same chords you used on the acoustic.

    I had an electric guitar that I got from my uncle, I didn't have an amplifier or anything so I never got to learned to play, for Christmas a few months ago my mom got me an acoustic guitar, but it's a training guitar for about 10-12 year olds, but I'm 16 and it's hard to get the chords right when my fat fingers hit multiple strings at once. I'll probably try my electric after I get the acoustic down. The best part is my pick is an old gamestop trade in card that I cut into a pick shape.

  • @Wargasm644
    @Wargasm644 5 лет назад +5

    I’ve had 20 guitars in my lifetime. Never owned an acoustic. But that’s about to change. I’m going unplugged for the next few months. Getting an acoustic. I’ve never really cared for acoustic, I’m more of a metal guy since the early 80’s. But adding that dimension can only improve my approach at guitar playing. It’s gonna be tough, but I feel like it’s something that needs to happen, and probably long overdue. I don’t hate acoustic. I think they are beautiful. They’ve just never really appealed to me sonically. But considering they have been around probably 10 times longer than electrics, it’s about time I gave the acoustic some respect. Plus I just watched Chris Cornell playing “nothing compares 2U” and it was moving. RIP Chris.

    Acoustic is better for strumming and songwriting and just chilling alone in your room
    Electric is better for looping and soloing, playing technical leads, and using pedals obviously

  • @petecounter9181
    @petecounter9181 7 лет назад +7

    As in all things, everything depends on what side of the road your coming from...acoustic players say that electric is more forgiving because less that precise playing, such as buzzing or squeeking can often be covered up compression pedals or distortion or other effects.electric can increase volume immensely without any change in technique where as acoustic if you increase volume its by playing harder and you HAVE to change technique to retain clarity and control. But you are correct in the points you made, coming from the point of view of an electric player. Keep the great videos coming!

    I admit I'm biased towards electric, but the sensitivity aspect I believe is overlooked. Anyone with some sense of tonality isn't going to be able to sustain (excuse the pun) tolerance for covering up their mistakes with distortion and such... granted, starting out I had some musical background playing in school bands (decent ear -or so a guitarist told me in jr high - but lacking muscle memory). but I never thought "oh this sounds better with distortion because (some poor technique) isn't so obvious"...quite the opposite, more gain will highlight everything, your technique and lack thereof. The degree of palm muting is more distinguishable. So I've found it encourages mechanical precision in a way that acoustic does not.
    I practiced on an acoustic starting out as well, but more for the benefits of higher action and thicker strings. I tend to lose interest and go back to electric, whereas to this I tend to hyperfocus, especially when learning solos and ignore the fingertip damage until i can't anymore. :) also depends what you like to listen to. I listen to a lot of hard rock, alternative, old school metal etc, occasionally classical and get bored easily by simplicity. Which probably explains my bias. But I can imagine why acoustic would come off less overwhelming to a beginner.

    Learn to love the pain on your finger tips, also the pain when your string snaps as well. No pain, no gain for using an acoustic guitar. It's wise to invest on a hard case when travelling, especially when flying.

    I like some Jazzy stuff on acoustic, well my Hollow body godin sounds great acousticly. For begining, electrics with low action are easier and if you like both I suggest learning on an electric then switch to acoustic later. If you like classical or flamenco guitars, you should definitely start on one because the strings are super soft.

    Great video. One thing you may want to add as a consideration: Initial Start Up Cost. I have an Acoustic Guitar, been playing for 4 months, and now really want an electric guitar. My Epiphone Acoustic Start Up ($140). The low end of decent to good new or used Electric Guitars and looks around $500-700. Thanks again.

    It's depend a lot here. With the electric, you can achieve a lot of song style and fun while you can on acoustic too unless you want to go up and learn specific music like flamenco guitar or almighty Bluegrass fingerstyle picking, then it's on acoustic but those style are specific and need to practice them like a second full time job to achieve those two style.

    Acoustic is the superior instrument. More tasteful. You can play anything that is from an electric guitar on an acoustic and it will sound great or better than the electric itself. Acoustic guitar covers of songs are all over RUclips because of the intimacy of the tone and nature of the clean sound. Distortion is cool sometimes but it’s something rarely necessary not as practical. If you want to be able to play any song from any genre and it sound good. Get an acoustic. Electric for fun not for making great music

    I own both acoustic and electric, and I find playing acoustic much more satisfying.
    The instrument really feels alive, I feel the guitar resonate and with the strings having more tension, I get a lot more feedback to my playing.
    I remember when I first started playing electric guitar and just felt like a heavy plank of wood.
    Not so much these days but I’ll still pick up the acoustic more often and just enjoy it more.
    Horses for courses I suppose.

    6:28 not necessarily. People play electric clean all the time. Chuck Berry, the Beatles, the animals, Rolling Stones, etc. Of course distortion is in fact popular on electric, but it’s not always used. You can’t really put distortion on an acoustic though (or not as well, and it doesn’t give the same effect)

    YourGuitarSage It's true that Electric Guitars are beginner friendly, & they also make Acoustic Guitars that feel like Electrics. Lots of kids who play Acoustic use a Classical Guitar which is basically an Acoustic Guitar with Nylon Strings. Nylon String Acoustic Guitars feel like Electric Guitars in a way because the strings are made out of Plastic & are easier to press down.

    One issue I find convenient for electric guitars is that the bridge heights are reversible and can be gradually adjusted. Acoustic bridge adjustment is less forgiving.
