Playing-wise he’s good... instrument selection-wise for this video and some of the comments regarding the technical nature of the instruments are just bad. On the first point, if you’re going to do a “main types of electric guitars” video I’m sorry but you can’t pick a 335 over a Les Paul. 335s are great and arguably more flexible than a Les Paul and many people prefer them but they’re simply far more niche in terms of quantities sold than a Les Paul and that’s what this video is supposed to be about. A 4-way video with Tele, Strat, Les Paul and 335 would have been defensible... a 3-way HAS to be Tele, Strat and Les Paul... a 3-way with what this video is meant to be about cannot be defended without one of the guitars being a Les Paul. It’s as simple as that. On the technical/constructional comments my favourite screw-up comment was that the hollow sections of the 335 are there to contribute to sustain, which is totally the opposite of the reality. Solid body guitars were literally invented to enhance sustain, especially at volume... and before anyone says anything, feedback, which the hollow sections to contribute to creating, is NOT the same as sustain. He did also demonstrated the Clapton “woman tone” on the bridge pickup when it’s widely acknowledged that it’s a neck humbucker pickup sound. 🤦🏼♂️

My go-to is the 335-style semi-hollowbody, mainly because I can coax such an enormous variety of tones out of it. Of course, it also depends on what you're trying to achieve, and if it's single coil sound you're after, I think most of us would reach for a Strat, However, and this is key, for reasons that I still haven't been able to figure out yet, there are certain single coil tones that are only achievable with a Telecaster. Mind you, I've bend trying to get these infernal instruments to submit to my will for nearly fifty-five years, and though I have had some rather limited success from time to time, I stand by the above assertions, with one important caveat (cue the hate mail) : tone begins at the hands, tone comes from the hands, tone originates AT THE HANDS. You didn’t mention scale length. I don’t have the biggest of hands - about average - and I’m preferring Gibson-Style & Fender Mustang Guitars because it’s easier to stretch to hit notes on those guitars. Gibson guitars are 24.75”, whereas Fender Tele & Strat are 25.5” - makes a huge difference when playing. Also - Fender Mustang is even shorter at 24” - really fun to play. PRS is in between Fender and Gibson’s at 25”.
3 Card Monty . I agree. Also, the longer scale length of the Fenders contributes to a brighter sound (one reason they are favored in country music to achieve the desired twang). Gibsons generally have a mellower tone because of the shorter scale. Granted, choice of strings, effects and obviously talent matter greatly but scale length should not be overlooked.
@@johnkelly748 Yep! 25.5" + good quality single coils = very nice bright sound! Even the fingerboard material - maple: a bit brighter or rosewood: a bit warmer - counts! I might be an out-of-the -fashion guy, but I prefer single coils to humbs.

I know. I'm shocked also lol. I have no clue what those black dots are on the neck. I just listen to stuff then play it. I can't read a lick of music for keyboard or guitar. Been playing the first since I was 5 where I went to the piano and perfectly played Dolly Parton's "9 to 5" after a few hours listening to the song over and over and picking out all the notes. Guitar was just a very rare thing. Not even sure what the string names are. Don't ask me if frets have actual names. I can whip out a huge symphony on keys as fast as I can think up the notes, can make album after album on a DAW, and can play some good Slayer etc on a guitar, picked up a trumpet for the first time in my life and played a few songs perfectly as soon as I felt where the notes were, but your vid up to the 5 minite mark (so far; must keep watching)has taught me SO MUCH about things I just ignored for decades since guitar wasn't my choice instrument. It's never too late to learn a thing.
I have a Tele, Strat, but Recently bought a epi Casino full hollowbody, with p90’s and I absolutely love the Casino, it’s become my favorite. The neck is super comfy and I just love the tones I get, even the feedback when driven hard is super cool to play around with.

Im torn between the second and third guitar i like writing music but don't really like a lot of hard sounds so the two of those sounded so perfect to me aaa
I'm looking forward to buying my first and you definitely helped me choose what to buy. After watching your vid, I actually think that I will lean towards the telecaster, just because its bridge pickup is undeniably unmatched. Thanks sir!
Nice Demo great skills. I love the Strat. Cosmetically, I've always preferred the bare maple neck as did Les Paul. He asked Gibson "Why did you put rosewood on the fret board?" To which they replied, "Because your fingers will show up better." To which he just shrugged.. I love the abalone pick guard for a little flashy touch. Mine has the factory pick guard and pick ups which are going to be replaced with an abalone pick guard loaded with Lace Sensors to eliminate the hum, just as soon as I get over my Wuhan laziness. Today is rainy day change the strings day on three or four acoustics.
Fascinating. Often wondered why Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Richie Blackmore and David Gilmour seem to prefer Fender but Jimmy Page always plays Gibson. Can't remember what Tony Iommi plays but maybe his choice is influenced by losing some of his fingertips when working in an engineering factory, which they say shaped his guitar playing style, giving it a unique sound.

What do you get if you wire in 2 humbuckers and a double hot rail with a splitter into a Tele wiring harness then poke it into strat type body. Why? Cheap guitar and had major issues. No tone control , not switching pickups. Had the Tele harness and the pickups. I'm amazed at how good it sounds now. Still want a Les Paul or a 335. Got my fingers crossed that after 50 yrs Santa will finally find me!
I’ve seen so many videos like this and people say something along the lines of “It’s which ever sounds the best” “It’s what feels the best” Honestly Fuck all that If you pickup a strat and you love how it sounds but hate how it looks And you pickup a les Paul and hate how it feels but love how it looks and that makes you want to play it more than the strat Then buy the les Paul At the end of the day the simple answer to this question is the one that makes you want to play Weather you want to play one that feels good or looks good Get the one you want to play

He nailed the Eric Johnson style of playing.
Him: these are 3 of the most iconic guitars ever
Ibanez gem, Les Paul, sg: So you've chosen death!!
I don't care he didn't include Ibanez (although that what I have) but he should've included ONE solid body guitar with humbuckers.
I have a Tele, Strat, but Recently bought a epi Casino full hollowbody, with p90’s and I absolutely love the Casino, it’s become my favorite. The neck is super comfy and I just love the tones I get, even the feedback when driven hard is super cool to play around with.
Though im just 2 months into learning how to play, i just love that twang those telecasters make.....
They are iconic guitars with an iconic sound!
1:52 he couldnt help but sing " its great for that kinda thing too"
Am in love with the tele
I gotta say, as a 14 year old, when you played those guitars you looked so gosh darn cool
All i need is Stevie T's 20 string guitar
The way he talks and then plays effortlessly like no big deal
I don't have a guitar and don't know anything about it but I am still enjoying this video till end.
It's never too late to get a guitar!
the one that you can afford
The one you have!
the guitars leaning on the sofa gave me anxiety on so many levels
Electric Spanish! That was a new to me. 20 years later
Oh boy , this iz good. A guitar genius .a teacher.
in 1969 in my hometown , waz a fellow 2 years younger than i , waz that good.he became a music teacher in University, in Wellington, New Zealand. Sadly and paying my respects still , to him, hiz sisters, he passed away a year ago, about , in Australia. RiP , Robin Yeatman.
Sadly while looking for my local store for a guitar I was unable to find my ideal guitar that I needed to bypass my disability.
I am a leftie.
Doggo Master Ah southpaws. The bane of my existence (not hating, just a Boxing joke lol)
I am left handed. Managed to learn guitar normally (fretting left hand strum/pick right hand. Being left handed is not an issue at all, it's just a matter of getting used to it. Up to this day, i don't understand why there are left handed guitars available at the market.
Jann Balcita I also play right handed guitars even though I am left handed.
Just holding a lefty guitar feels weird and looks kinda weird
@@mnaeslund same here, my dad bought me a right-handed when I was a kid and didn't think twice about it
It didn't stop Jimi Hendrix. Or Tony Iommi. Or Kurt Cobain.
I liked the sound of the second telecaster, liked the wood on the first though.
Lovely play, I am left hand, like Jimi Strat was made for me, yep.
Good God! That Strat at 6:20 is stunningly great!
You play that 335 the best.
Its not a 335
Im torn between the second and third guitar i like writing music but don't really like a lot of hard sounds so the two of those sounded so perfect to me aaa
I'm looking forward to buying my first and you definitely helped me choose what to buy. After watching your vid, I actually think that I will lean towards the telecaster, just because its bridge pickup is undeniably unmatched. Thanks sir!
Hey glad you found it helpful! Can't wait for the new guitar!! Happy playing 🤘
follow up. I got a 335. Awesome guitar, and his description of Woman tone is right on !!!
Which type of guitar is right for me ...... well I now have 17 guitars.... I'm sure I will find it sooner or later (my wife sure hopes so) 🤣
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
he rocks as hard on the guitar as he rocks rachel's world
I recognized waterline(mark knopfler) from you playing the stratocaster
Fascinating. Often wondered why Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Richie Blackmore and David Gilmour seem to prefer Fender but Jimmy Page always plays Gibson. Can't remember what Tony Iommi plays but maybe his choice is influenced by losing some of his fingertips when working in an engineering factory, which they say shaped his guitar playing style, giving it a unique sound.
Live Page uses mostly Les Pauls, but in the studio used many different guitars, Teles, Danelectro.
Eric did use gibsons in his cream dsys
Thanks, just subscribed, excellent camera work and lighting.precise and to the point info without going into the guitar hero antics of other youtubers!!
Really good playing. Thanks.
0:30 " send me your location "
Strat with hambucker - for Any type of player.
For beginner - any guitar literally.
Shows you what I know about guitars. I thought you needed different guitars for “lead” or “jazz” sounds. I didn’t know you could do them both on one guitar!
Also I wish I had that guy’s skill 😆
Thanks for watching!
Got an old SG and an old 335,the only electric guitars I seem to really need...
Thanks for sharing a good video. My past experience was only with acoustics, so electrics are somewhat of a mystery. Good to learn. Appreciate your efforts.
KILLER playing! Nice work!
Playing that cool and his voice like so calm
All those guitars sounded way too twangy. Maybe his amp threw things off.
I am always fender Les Paul ibanez Gibson guy
This is an insult to the Les Paul Community
This comment is really authentic
Ehh... need we bring up the tuning issues, weight, and lack of ability to property intonate for Les Pauls?
Les Pauls are meme guitars at this point
Agreed, everyone complaining about build issues, but this video is about tone and style, its a crime to leave the Les Paul out of that discussion.
Would have been cool if the 4th surprise option would have been the warlock
The PRS Hollowbody's are incredible guitars.
I'm always and forever be a fan of tele
Strat 335 tele no les paul blade guitars are for me brilliant
I’ve seen so many videos like this and people say something along the lines of
“It’s which ever sounds the best”
“It’s what feels the best”
Honestly
Fuck all that
If you pickup a strat and you love how it sounds but hate how it looks
And you pickup a les Paul and hate how it feels but love how it looks and that makes you want to play it more than the strat
Then buy the les Paul
At the end of the day the simple answer to this question is the one that makes you want to play
Weather you want to play one that feels good or looks good
Get the one you want to play
Mans smooth wit it
