@@DarrellBraunGuitar Actually the Electric Guitar is generally the easiest to play due to Lower action, Thinner Strings being made out of Nickel (they're more flexible than Phosphor Bronze Strings), Skinnier neck, & Flatter body. Plus the Tune-O-Matic Bridge makes it easier to adjust the intonation, & action of each string. Some Electric Guitars also have built in amplifiers which makes them even easier to use "Flip the Switch and Play" because they run on batteries & have active pickups which makes them punchier.

Electric Guitars are generally easier to play because the action is lower, & the body is flatter. @@DarrellBraunGuitar Let's face it, Electric Guitars are generally easier to start with than Acoustic Guitars because of their Eaiser Action, Thinner Strings, & Smaller Size. Having said that, most Acoustic Guitars these days are designed to feel like Electric Guitars because they have Extra Light (or even so Super Light) Gauge Strings on them, Easier action, & the body is Smaller, but they're made in a way so that they have really good tone because alot of Acoustic-Electric Guitars sound like toys when played Unplugged.

One of the big reasons I started with an Electric Guitar is because Barre Chords are actually simpler this way since the Action is Lower, the Strings are Thinner, & they're Smaller in Size. Acoustic Guitars generally have Thicker necks, but Taylor Guitars is known for making Acoustic Guitars that feel similar to Electric Guitars to facilitate playability.
same i listen to acoustic and rock stuff and i like both so idk what to choose. prob going to go with acoustic tho bc its cheaper, but i'm getting it this summer so my opinion may change idk

I started on electric. I would say start on what inspires you the most! Electric is physically easier to play, but an acoustic tends to be less expensive (mainly because you don't need to buy an amp as well). What I think it is the most important though is to choose whichever ones makes you/the person want to play more!
My first guitar was a Les Paul Custom. I worked all summer long in high school to buy it. My dad paid for lessons but the teacher had me use an acoustic guitar in his studio and forced me to play old songs. I wanted to learn rock and roll. There was no tab, no You Tube, no friends who knew how to play. Sad to say I quit and sold the Les Paul when I needed money in college. I’m trying to learn now. Electric all the way. Steven Ohata nice a les Paul is a good guitar to start on but I started on a squire Stratocaster by fender it has a tabaco burst color and it is nice and cheap but in getting an Ibanez GRG120BDXL for my birthday and the thing that sucks is I’m left handed and it’s way more expensive
Bummer. I'd say you had the wrong teacher, not the wrong guitar. I took one lesson a few years ago. I wanted to learn to use a pick. The guy taught me a finger picking technique. I use it all the time, but I still only strum when I use a pick. I know picks can be used for so much more, but my experience soured me on lessons from the wrong teacher. I hope you find the right teacher. Maybe interview a few so you can find the person who will teach you what you want to learn.

I’ve already been playing electric for 6 months. And I love it so far. I really prefer the sound and the range of tones you can get on an electric. I’ve been playing for multiple hours each day and I never get bored. I absolutely love the electric guitar.
I'm a newbie too! I went with electric. The amp I have has an acoustic simulator so I can get that acoustic sound when I want it. It's month 2 and I bought a 2nd guitar. My wife hates me! 😆🤣
My friend does Ukulele and I'm gonna start learning Guitar and we agreed that we would learn the Campfire Song Song as soon as we could and be annoying to anyone we know by playing on repeat
I've found that the student's passion for playing is often tied directly to how they feel about the guitar they're playing on. If the guitar doesn't scream to them "PLAY ME!", then it's the wrong instrument. Yes, this can often be due to the difficulty in playing, but it also often comes down to the way it sounds, the way it looks, and the way it feels. Because of this, it seems like the best thing to do is to go into the store with the aspiring would-be player and give them the opportunity to react to the instruments naturally. Give them a price point, see which ones they react strongly towards, and then put those instruments in their hands. Don't force it. If there's no connection, call it a day and try again later. The hardest part for any new player is to get over that hump, where their efforts finally start to seem to make a difference, and where that difference is enough to overcome the frustrations (and pain) of learning a new instrument. If they connect with the instrument, you might see more passion in their efforts - passion which helps push the student when it becomes frustrating. Without that connection, the passion won't be there. We shouldn't try to force what WE like onto the prospective player. As long as it's a sound instrument - built well and capable of being played - then all that really matters is whether or not the guitar fits the person. Acoustic, electric, classical, thin, fat, whatever. It doesn't matter nearly as much as whether or not it makes the new player actually desire to play.
Ahhh I have both now. The Acoustic was something me and my Mom thought would be more beginner friendly for me to play, but Imo, they are more physically demanding and larger for me (I'm a short guy lmao). Also Electric was more just for me, not just because the strings are less strong, as well as smaller, but it's a more diverse and flowing sort of instrument than Acoustic. Great Video Man!
For me, it depends on the interests of the student. I was into rock stuff even before I learned guitar. So when I started to learn, I was bummed when I was told by some older guys to use an acoustic first. I would show up at lessons and struggle using the damn thing. My teacher noticed, so he let me play the Strat lying at the corner of the room instead. It was a breeze to play, albeit being more heavy in terms of weight, but it was a great learning tool due to its playability. Once I learned the lesson on the electric, I would go home and remember what I learned at home using the acoustic. Later on, as I was getting into more heavier stuff, my acoustic just couldn't do it for me. So I saved up and bought my first electric. I thought back then, I should just have started with an electric rather than waste money on something I wouldn't use anyway. And I've been an electric guitar player ever since.

While me i play acoustic guitar but when i listen to my brothers song simple plan, i felt excited and amused to electric guitar, ever since i like simple plan songs cause it will give you a great vibes and thats all because of electric guitar. and next year, i expect my electric guitar set. I hope. I could have one. Cause i felt it on my soul that i want to learn electric guitar even if its hard to play, "they say" but no one can stop me. 💙

So I initially learned through a teacher, where he showed me the basics like proper posture and grip technique (almost always in a arch) strumming and chords. For strumming, I was taught to think like a drummer, and that tip never failed me since. Then, when the lessons were over, I'd look up tutorials online and learn more about the instrument on my own.
@@Kjay_2001 it's actually not harder to play, as I find it more easier to use. I find acoustics bulky now lol. What's hard about electric is getting a decent sound out of it, and that would mean a lifelong pursuit to get that perfect sound. But I also think that is also the fun of it.
I started on electric and am glad I did. I learned the basic chords and scales to start off but was able to play songs I liked really fast. I was obsessed with playing the “Purple Haze” opening riff for the the first three months or so. I played mostly unplugged bc my amp was trash, so I got a good feel for it. I bought an acoustic about a year in so I could play around with my friends. I got a better amp too. Now I happily play songs like “Bold As Love” and “Lenny” without the same difficulty I faced with the “Purple Haze” opening riff.
My first guitar was a Fender Standard Stratocaster... Mexican made... 1992. I still have it! I dropped in a David Gilmore EMG loaded pick guard and I use it when I want to play Pink Floyd.
First guitar was electric with a crappy squire frontman amp. It has a distortion button and was awesome. Had I not started with ACDC, I never would have gotten into flamenco. Electric is a great way to grab interest quickly.
I wanted to play electric guitar when I was in my 10's but ofc my parents thought they'd get me an acoustic , and as a result I spent 8 years hating guitar. Then I bought an electric one and it's just awesome
Another factor in choosing electric is cost. In my opinion, you can get a better electric for a reasonable price, whereas a decent acoustic tends to get pricey. Easier to play for a beginner, more versatile, lower cost would all make me think an electric is a better choice for someone starting out. Also, don't ignore the "cool" factor. A lot of kids starting out want to rock. An electric will just be more exciting to a young player, I would guess. Great video! Thumbs up!
From Leo: I agree, it is pretty easy to find an electric guitar in the $100-$200 range that plays well. Most acoustics in the beginner price point are pretty rough. In addition, the first few months of lessons are rough to stay motivated, and if the student hates the instrument, the chances of progress are a lot less. A few sloppy power chords with ovedrive cranked can add some juvenile excitement. My 1st was a Sears acoustic that was nothing but frustration, I saved money all summer for a Fender Strat, and actually learned to play.
I've always looked at it like learning to drive a car manual vs. automatic. If you learn automatic (electric) then it can be very difficult to go to manual (acoustic). Whereas the reverse is true, if you can get comfortable and calloused up on an acoustic (manual) then an electric feels like butter, you don't get fatigued nearly as easily and knobs and buttons take 3 seconds to learn and figure out... You're much more likely to end a rounded player, whereas if you start on an electric, then you're much LESS likely to get proficient or good on an acoustic...

Darrell Braun Guitar steel string acoustic. Had a nice beefy neck but needed a good setup before I was able to play smoke on the water. Switched to a fender starcaster strat and it was much better, but the neck was super thin
in reality i started on acoustic but i never really took the time to learn or properly play. i got my first guitar around 8 and up until 11 they were all cheap walmart or toys r us acoustics. i then stopped “playing” for 4 years and finally got an electric when i was 15. i went to guitar center on black friday and bought a 130 (it was 85 for the black friday sale) red worn cherry epiphone then i started teaching myself guitar properly. this was 2 years ago so i would probably call that my first guitar. i really didn’t know the difference between good and not so good guitars so at the time it was good enough, but when i finally got a new one with better quality i stopped playing on the old one.
I started playing on a classical guitar. I just started playing electric around last December and the switch hasn’t been as hard as I thought it would be. But I do regret not switching earlier because the amount of types of music you can play on an electric is endless.
I started with a brand-spanking new Epiphone strat way back in '86. I loved it... except that you couldn't serenade a chick properly with it unless you lugged your amp around like an idiot. On the other hand, Metallica and Megadeth.
1:40 electric. Advantages: Less pressure, thinner. Better for short arms. Downsides: Nobs and switches. Lots of tones. Takes time. Simple adapter to plug into phone and laptop. 4:05 7:24 2:40 acoustic Advantages: simple. Disadvantages: uncomfortable, thick body, harder to play, thicker neck, harder to play complex notes. Needs to build up strength. Orchestra or auditorium! 6:07 I love all music. I like indie rock, folk, fingerstyle. I love rock too. AHHHH.
Most important in choosing, I feel so at least, is exactly what you said, what type of music you’re interested in. Whichever aids in pursuing your musical passion is going to make learning more fun and help you stick to the instrument.
I totally agree Darrell, it's Passion that drives you. After decades of playing the guitar, I still consider myself at the amateurish level. I have never been able to put it away, quit it or sell it. Although I have to admit nylon strings have to be the easiest on your skin
Great advice. I started on classical as someone leant it to me and it was free. I play electric and acoustic and still love classical. Your advice on a thin acoustic is great. I have had a dreadnought for 40 years and recently bought an Om - 14 and cannot believe how incredibly easy it is to play in comparison. Love the channel and the look of your Godin nylon / electric.
I started out with a Decca acoustic, the strings were 10 miles high! Being 7 at the time it was quite a chore pressing down strings. Plus I didn't know about string gauges, I had it strung up with Black Diamond strings(.13 to .56) in standard tuning (ouch!).It was a treat when I got my first electric and Ernie Ball SS's. I would def go with an electric just for the fact it's so much easier to play. Been playing 46 years now and it's provided a lot of fun in my life. It takes some time to learn, but the rewards can be great whether you play for yourself or play out in front of people. So buy a guitar, you never know till you try!
Go with electric I've been playing guitar since age 13...electric is just easier and forgiving...that will motivate you more in the beginning stages of learning the guitar. There is nothing wrong in learning the acoustic first but its just a tad bit demanding physically and trust me there is a different learning curve for acoustic guitars.
For me i chose the acoustic guitar to have a challenge right away because I knew i wasn't going to give up because that wasn't an option when I got good with the acoustic I bought a more expensive electric guitar and it was like butter. So in my opinion start with acoustic because when you move to electric you'll be so much better than if you start with electric then want to play acoustic.

I HIGHLY recommend nylon classical guitar for many reasons.. 1st, it has wider neck therefore you will learn chords easily since you have more room for each finger (and helps you stretch your fingers better).. 2nd reason, it is much easier to play due to the shorter scale length or it could just be the strings being MUCH softer so it's much easier to fret a note AND it won't hurt your fingers due to the softness of the nylon strings. Not to mention it is simpler than electric and usually smaller than a typical acoustic. I would recommend a Yamaha C40/C40M or C70.. very cheap and they are actually good quality.. many have learned on these guitars and I'm one of them. I started this way and still love my classical nylon guitar. Acoustic, electric, and classical all have their distinct sound, but you can't beat a new set of Daddario Pro arte strings on a good quality classical. The heart and soul of the guitar is found here.
Nice video! My first guitar was on accoustic. I started playing electric a couple years ago and now I barely play acoustic. Accoustic is a beautiful guitar though, I'm just a sucker for electric guitar effects. I agree 100% with everything you have said!
I started playing a strat copy at about 13 years of age and needed an electric to take advantage of playing with my peers at that time. I couldn’t have joined the garage band with an acoustic. Over time I upgraded my electric guitar, however for one reason or another I stopped playing. Twenty-odd years later I got myself an acoustic. I think there’s a lot to be said for how easy it is to just pick up and play and learn complete songs that you can perform for friends. The acoustic works for me. A short scale could be a good option for someone who feels a dreadnought size is overwhelming.
That is so true. You can do a lot of stuff on electric that you can’t do on acoustic. Like the action, bridge, neck, and etc. This will let you have the easier choice and the better choice to play electric
I'm an adult but I have really short arms even for a girl. When I first started playing acoustic, it was really painful. My fretting fingers as well as right arm would start aching after 5-10 mins and I couldn't continue without taking a break. After a few months of persistence and practice, I can go on for more than an hour without feeling tired, and I've got those nice calluses on my fretting fingers now. Whichever instrument you pick, it's important to persevere. Also, I think the type of music that you like is an important deciding factor. I chose acoustic because I'm more inclined towards folk and pop music rather than rock and roll. Some day I may switch to electric guitar though, cos it looks fun and the possibilities are infinite.
I started with finger style acoustic and I may not know a ton of songs but I’ve learned so many difficult techniques that I wouldn’t have learned this early if I started with an easier style. I say if you have the motivation to start with the hard stuff first than go for it.

Lots of companies had bright ideas of Acoustic Guitars with an Electric Guitar feel which makes it easier to switch between the 2, & also facilitates playability (the added pickup makes recording easier).
Not enough time is a stupid excuse. We all have the same amount of time in a day it's about how you use it. No doubt if you want to learn guitar you will make time for it and spend less time watching tv, RUclips, social media etc. As for lack of talent, it's all in practice and dedication. Its been 11 months have you learned yet? If not start!! It's a new year!
Literally thought the same but I set aside 1hr to 2 hrs to play guitar every day and I have seen my progress skyrocket and so has my wife. She was blown away that I’m now learning solos. When you figure new stuff out it inspires you to keep playing. I’m so glad I found the guitar and I thank Slash for inspiring me to pick it up. Now I own a les Paul 😄
From my experience, i've been playing acoustic and classical guitar since 13 years old, and electric guitar since 15 years old i mean, it doesn't really bother if you really want to play, all of them sound beautiful for me ( classical one creates peaceful sounding , you won't be bored when you practice it around-the-clock ) but i'd really prefer people who love guitar , grab a classical guitar like ( altamira, yamaha etc) Both brands priced their products at the reasonable position, just grab and play if you decide to go with classical guitar classical guitar does benefit you to build up every fundamentals of guitar, apart from its wide neck, i got ''medium-sized?'' hands, so i really enjoy to play with the classical guitars' wide neck , you can also stretch the fingers while you're playing it When you're growing , you'll just find out your collections will keep increasing, it's a rule, it's about digging out more of music ! one thing i don't like from classical guitar , is that , they're not built for bending, the tension is different from metallic strings
I'm an acoustic guy for the most part so there's your bias here, but i'm always glad I started with acoustic simply because i was decided on learning anyhow and it truly made me work for it which truly paid off in the long run I feel, actually not relying on anything else than the strumming and getting those first chords in, yes maybe discouraging possibly even more so on an acoustic I wouldn't know since I didn't do it otherwise, but if you are determined to learn no matter what the quote on quote adversity that comes with it builds you a solid foundation which doesn't rely on the electronic element, no offense lol...Plus that just means when you pick up an electric after you need only learn the controls and electronic component than you just tear down the floor with it..Anyhow I have always been of the opinion you should mainly choose the guitar which will accomplish the type of music you like, I was and am truly into feelgood folk music so no brainer for me
In my experience a acoustic guitar is best for starting out with. It’s simple and basic, it provides the ear with natural tone so it gets use to hearing true intonation, it works the fingers and prepares the hand bh strengthening it and you can play it anywhere. Electric guitars are really unforgiving and you will hear every mistake causing you to be more self conscious and effecting your desire to play. The acoustic guitar gives you a playing field while keeping it basic so when you move on you’ll have more to work with rather then starting from electric and having no place to move on after learning the basic. And it really tests the player to see how much passion they have for playing rather then just making sounds. This is what I think anyway.
Started at age 33. On acoustic. Although I really LOVE the electric guitar sounds. I love both equally. IMO for singers or those that like to sing and play as I do I would would say start on acoustic. I started on a full size dreadnought and I’m a 5’7 guy with shorter arms and had no issues. But for younger smaller players I recommend a shorter scale and a smaller body. I did however start off with 9 gauge strings and worked my way up to 12 gauges. I recommend the smallest guage strings you can go with first playing. For me I prefer 12s now because I strum really hard. This also taught me how to efficiently change strings myself (another plus for acoustic). Imo if Just starting off find the one that’s easiest to play for YOUR fingers preference. IMPORTANT! I would also recommend buying your first guitar in store where an experienced tech can adjust the action to ensure the guitar is playable enough and has NO FRET BUZZ. Online you don’t know what you’re getting and can’t physically test. Then if you try to take the online one bought somewhere to get set up you’ll get the snooty remarks from the tech, “where did you buy this thing from?” SINGERS FYI…you may find yourself getting rid of your first several guitars for the one that sounds best with YOUR voice. I did. Another advantage for the acoustic you can take it anywhere, no amp or electricity needed and pick it up anytime without plugging. I do have an electric now but for in general and singing I tend to pick up my acoustic the most.
I loaded it up with some Dimarzios. Got a Super Distorion in the bridge position and a Chopper in the neck. It sounds fantastic! Countless hours on that guitar! 🤘
Began on a hard earned Pacifica too, never had to complain. Beautiful woods (being fond of the aesthetics of your instrument matters imho), very good factory setup, and man when you break in your fingertips and wrist first, you don't want the the acoustic steel string S&M thing to hamper your progression and throw you down. Nowadays I play my steel string acoustic more often though, only because I like to cover more songs on it than on the electric. But man am I glad I learned barre chords on good ol' Pacifica, even on this tame baby it felt hard, don't want to even think what it would have been and how long it would have taken on a 13-56 gauge steel string acoustic. Oh and about those people who are forced to play nylon when all they want to do is the Smells like Teen Spirit riff, my warmest sympathies. Nylon strings could make cry, but I would never have spent the hours I spent on my Pacifica on one of these. Oh and I loved and still love to play an unplugged electric when just training and rehearsing, or when having insomnia. Easy on your ears and those of people around you. Very glad Darrell suggests electric first for playability and versatility, very sound advice.
I started on an acoustic. It was the cheaper route by far. And I didn't have to worry about things like amps, power and all that stuff. I could just pick up my acoustic and practice anytime, anywhere. Yah, it wasn't the easier route of the two, but man it strengthened my fingers real quick!
I joke about my Daphne Blue and Surf Green Strat obsession, which was initially true. As I learned to play my pretty guitars, I became absolutely fascinated with the Strat's versatility. I love being able to (or attempt to) play everything from Oldies to Black Metal. Swapping pickups to find the most versatile tone continues to be a lot of fun.
tom rabbani I'd say yes, the closest I have is Seymour Duncan SSL-5/SSL-5 with a JB Jr in the bridge, not the same as the full Humbucker, but still a nice thick tone.
I think I'll ask my parents for an electric guitar for Christmas. The only songs I listen to with acoustic are Ghost Riders in the Sky, and Ring of Fire. Everything else is rock, metal, and classical music (particularly Mozart).
I wanted to learn on electric, as I am young and need something small to be able to comfortably play, and I enjoy the sound of electrics. However, my parents got me an acoustic, which I dont totally oppose but I experience every difficulty listed in the video. Any advice?
I am into drumming, but somehow lost the motivation when I sold my electric drum kit when we moved to a smaller house. I couldn't fit the damn thing without sacrificing some stuff. So I decided to learn how to play the guitar, and I've been a metal fan since like forever. So I worked and saved hard to get my first guitar, It's a Jackson JS32T Rhoads, I'm a sucker for V style guitars, becuase I grew up listening to Megadeth. By the way I am 30 years old now. I think It's never too late to learn the guitar, if you have the passion.
I really love listening to you play an electric guitar. The clip of you playing the Ibanez at the beginning of the video and the one where you demonstrated the bridge pickup were amazing. Had a bit of Satriani and Vai in them. If you made a CD, I'd definitely buy it.
Years ago when I first started playing guitar I wanted to rock out lol I thought acoustic was obsolete and not as cool. As I have gotten older I play my acoustic more and more. Absolutely love acoustic guitar! Still think electric is the best and the coolest but acoustic I think can be more inspiring for someone who is a singer song writer... but I am NOT LOL.
I'm torn. I love the wide variety of possible sounds you can get with an electric, plus they look better (in my opinion), but on the other hand an acoustic is way more affordable and I'd rather fingerpick, which, from what I've understood, eliminates electric as an option, unless I've been misled and you CAN fingerpick an electric then it's a clear cut choice. I need help 😣
Ok, I was misinformed. I'm going for electric, the total set of equipment is a bit more expensive but I feel it's worth it. My first guitar and amp should be arriving sometime next month, I hope this journey is gonna end well!
Darrell Braun Guitar Electric Guitars are of course the easiest to learn but you can make Acoustic Guitars feel like Electric Guitars by using the lightest gauge of Strings & some Acoustic Guitars have Pickups (aka Acoustic-Electric Guitars) so you can hook them up to an amp. String gauge is another thing. Acoustic-Electric Guitars give you the best of both worlds cause of the lighter gauge strings, lower action, & even the cut away, & a thinner body such as those Taylors.
I'd say *build* your first guitar. It was truly test of my dedication when i built my first bass. You'll suffer in the process but damn i felt like a jedi padawan constructed his first lightsaber when i was done. Do not let the final product fool you though you're not done, now you have to master it, the initial dedication is now a feel of responsability to continue on. Go out, and try out different models and stitch up whatever you like the most in one instrument. If you gonna build an acoustic... may God have mercy acoustic chamgers are a nightmare. Pro Tip: Bolted necks makes it easy neck adjustments via added wood pieces. And do not bother winding your own pickup at first(it's not hard but damn agonizing to find components like the magnets or super thing copper wire depending where do you live) Have a friend knows how to play the thing so you have a test dummy, Leo Fender didn't knew how to play too ya know! Heck maybe buy some kits you can assemble, i wish i had those where i live lol
Thank you for this. I've tried before to learn guitar but found it horribly clunky and painful. It was an acoustic both times. Now, past 60, I have it in my head once again to try to learn. Rock and blues are my passion, so I'm thinking electric is the way. Thanks for the encouragement.
I was in 4th grade when I wanted to learn guitar. I took some lessons at my school, but since I was young and had an acoustic, everything hurt! I’m 15 now and I still want to learn guitar! Unfortunately, I can’t afford a guitar (my parents don’t buy me things with their own money which is fine). If I had started electric, I think I’d still be playing today!

In my mind, this is not really important. I guess the bigger decision is how much you want to spend on what is basically an experiment to see if you like to play or you don't. The people that want to play guitar will play whatever you give them, and those who don't will not play even if you give them the best and easiest playing guitar in the world. Case in point, my first guitar was this really really bad nylon string guitar, I still have it, and it sucks. But I played it for over five years, and I really liked to play guitar. My brother wanted to learn guitar a few years ago, and I have a nice strat now, a couple of nice acoustics, both nylon and steel. So he began on those, but he never really liked it enough to play them. That is why I don't think that this choice is important, just my opinion.
Apples and oranges! You should have both. Most very young players start with a cheap acoustic, then - depending on the genres they most want to play - move next to an electric, and/or a quality acoustic most fitting for their favorite genre. But, unless you are committed to classical or flamenco, you will eventually own both.

Darell, I'm enjoying watching your channel. It's very informative, entertaining, and professionally done.That out of the way, I feel that the advantage of the acoustic guitar is what you show as its weakness. A new player wants to learn how to play cleanly, learn how to push down the string so that there's no interference, and a well set-up acoustic will do that. I just restarted my guitar-learning experience after a very long time of hibernation and bought, after thorough research, a Taylor A12e model. It's not the sexiest guitar, but it does what it's supposed to do very, very well. My last "beginner" guitar back in 2013 was a Martin D-28 Eric Clapton model, and that was just ridiculous for the task at hand. If I stick to it, I'll move up to a Martin again, eventually.
I tried a jumbo acoustic and abandoned it for being unwieldy and a decade later started again with a superstrat, merely purchased bc i can practice quietly. The difference in comfort is astounding. My next rig will very likely be an acoustasonic when/if i graduate to acoustic for similar reasons.
I started on a classical guitar (nylon strings) when I was 11 because I loved listening to Simon & Garfunkel on RUclips, and 4 years later I got an electric as I started listening to metal as well. Both is good!
Picked up my first electric a few months ago after having learned on and played acoustic for years. I’m a hard believer that everyone should start off on acoustic - it’s easier to pick up and play, easier to take with you, but also teaches the muscles to press down hard on the frets. But one thing I always felt on acoustic as I grew is how limited you are - an acoustic will sound pretty much the same all the time. Transitioning to electric was like entering an entirely new universe - pedals, knobs, pickups, amps. A million different combinations to change the way your guitar sounds!
I agree, build hand strength with an acoustic to start, after that an electric will feel like cheating. Going the other way, from electric to acoustic, I would imagine would be terrible and you'd put the acoustic back down quickly without a chance to really build your hand muscles. You can build strength with an electric but would take longer I think. I went acoustic first when I started and think that's really the best way.
I bought myself a Gibson Firebird for my first guitar. I knew I wanted to go electric, and played everything in the store. Studio Firebird was definitely it for me. Had full size humbuckers and actual geared tuners unlike the normal Firebirds.
I started on a Nylon guitar that my grandpa lend me. That guitar was owned by a friend of my grandpa who died a few years before. Some years later, my grandpa died, so i think I must gift it before I die to continue the cycle. Stories aside, my second guitar was a Steel one. I like it, but not too much. My third guitar was an electric one, a black Spider (didn't know the brand before buying it) with 2 humbuckers. My amp is a Fender Mustang I (I'm always in a budget). After 7 years, I play electric 98% of the time, so, I wish I started playing an electric guitar since the beginning.

The first year or two, all I learned were songs meant for acoustics but all I had was an old electric Squier strat. It is much easier to handle. If you want to learn, use either. just keep playing, learning, and saving for the one you want most. You are an amazingly talented guitarist! @@DarrellBraunGuitar Actually the Electric Guitar is generally the easiest to play due to Lower action, Thinner Strings being made out of Nickel (they're more flexible than Phosphor Bronze Strings), Skinnier neck, & Flatter body. Plus the Tune-O-Matic Bridge makes it easier to adjust the intonation, & action of each string. Some Electric Guitars also have built in amplifiers which makes them even easier to use "Flip the Switch and Play" because they run on batteries & have active pickups which makes them punchier.

One of the big reasons I started with an Electric Guitar is because Barre Chords are actually simpler this way since the Action is Lower, the Strings are Thinner, & they're Smaller in Size. Acoustic Guitars generally have Thicker necks, but Taylor Guitars is known for making Acoustic Guitars that feel similar to Electric Guitars to facilitate playability.

I started on electric. I would say start on what inspires you the most! Electric is physically easier to play, but an acoustic tends to be less expensive (mainly because you don't need to buy an amp as well). What I think it is the most important though is to choose whichever ones makes you/the person want to play more!
A electric can be had with everything needed on E-Bay for less than a 100 dollars and most teachers recommend a electric to learn on. Bla,Bla,etc.

My first guitar was a Les Paul Custom. I worked all summer long in high school to buy it. My dad paid for lessons but the teacher had me use an acoustic guitar in his studio and forced me to play old songs. I wanted to learn rock and roll. There was no tab, no You Tube, no friends who knew how to play. Sad to say I quit and sold the Les Paul when I needed money in college. I’m trying to learn now. Electric all the way. Steven Ohata nice a les Paul is a good guitar to start on but I started on a squire Stratocaster by fender it has a tabaco burst color and it is nice and cheap but in getting an Ibanez GRG120BDXL for my birthday and the thing that sucks is I’m left handed and it’s way more expensive
Bummer. I'd say you had the wrong teacher, not the wrong guitar. I took one lesson a few years ago. I wanted to learn to use a pick. The guy taught me a finger picking technique. I use it all the time, but I still only strum when I use a pick. I know picks can be used for so much more, but my experience soured me on lessons from the wrong teacher. I hope you find the right teacher. Maybe interview a few so you can find the person who will teach you what you want to learn.

I've found that the student's passion for playing is often tied directly to how they feel about the guitar they're playing on. If the guitar doesn't scream to them "PLAY ME!", then it's the wrong instrument. Yes, this can often be due to the difficulty in playing, but it also often comes down to the way it sounds, the way it looks, and the way it feels.
Because of this, it seems like the best thing to do is to go into the store with the aspiring would-be player and give them the opportunity to react to the instruments naturally. Give them a price point, see which ones they react strongly towards, and then put those instruments in their hands. Don't force it. If there's no connection, call it a day and try again later.
The hardest part for any new player is to get over that hump, where their efforts finally start to seem to make a difference, and where that difference is enough to overcome the frustrations (and pain) of learning a new instrument. If they connect with the instrument, you might see more passion in their efforts - passion which helps push the student when it becomes frustrating. Without that connection, the passion won't be there.
We shouldn't try to force what WE like onto the prospective player. As long as it's a sound instrument - built well and capable of being played - then all that really matters is whether or not the guitar fits the person.
Acoustic, electric, classical, thin, fat, whatever. It doesn't matter nearly as much as whether or not it makes the new player actually desire to play.

The Acoustic was something me and my Mom thought would be more beginner friendly for me to play, but Imo, they are more physically demanding and larger for me (I'm a short guy lmao). Also Electric was more just for me, not just because the strings are less strong, as well as smaller, but it's a more diverse and flowing sort of instrument than Acoustic. Great Video Man!

For me, it depends on the interests of the student. I was into rock stuff even before I learned guitar. So when I started to learn, I was bummed when I was told by some older guys to use an acoustic first. I would show up at lessons and struggle using the damn thing. My teacher noticed, so he let me play the Strat lying at the corner of the room instead. It was a breeze to play, albeit being more heavy in terms of weight, but it was a great learning tool due to its playability. Once I learned the lesson on the electric, I would go home and remember what I learned at home using the acoustic. Later on, as I was getting into more heavier stuff, my acoustic just couldn't do it for me. So I saved up and bought my first electric. I thought back then, I should just have started with an electric rather than waste money on something I wouldn't use anyway. And I've been an electric guitar player ever since.

While me i play acoustic guitar but when i listen to my brothers song simple plan, i felt excited and amused to electric guitar, ever since i like simple plan songs cause it will give you a great vibes and thats all because of electric guitar. and next year, i expect my electric guitar set. So I initially learned through a teacher, where he showed me the basics like proper posture and grip technique (almost always in a arch) strumming and chords. For strumming, I was taught to think like a drummer, and that tip never failed me since.
Then, when the lessons were over, I'd look up tutorials online and learn more about the instrument on my own.
@@Kjay_2001 it's actually not harder to play, as I find it more easier to use. I find acoustics bulky now lol. What's hard about electric is getting a decent sound out of it, and that would mean a lifelong pursuit to get that perfect sound. But I also think that is also the fun of it.

I started on electric and am glad I did. I learned the basic chords and scales to start off but was able to play songs I liked really fast. I was obsessed with playing the “Purple Haze” opening riff for the the first three months or so. I played mostly unplugged bc my amp was trash, so I got a good feel for it. I bought an acoustic about a year in so I could play around with my friends. I got a better amp too. Now I happily play songs like “Bold As Love” and “Lenny” without the same difficulty I faced with the “Purple Haze” opening riff.

My first guitar was a Fender Standard Stratocaster... Mexican made... 1992. I still have it! I dropped in a David Gilmore EMG loaded pick guard and I use it when I want to play Pink Floyd.

First guitar was electric with a crappy squire frontman amp. It has a distortion button and was awesome. Had I not started with ACDC, I never would have gotten into flamenco. Electric is a great way to grab interest quickly.
I wanted to play electric guitar when I was in my 10's but ofc my parents thought they'd get me an acoustic , and as a result I spent 8 years hating guitar. Then I bought an electric one and it's just awesome
Another factor in choosing electric is cost. In my opinion, you can get a better electric for a reasonable price, whereas a decent acoustic tends to get pricey.
Easier to play for a beginner, more versatile, lower cost would all make me think an electric is a better choice for someone starting out.
Also, don't ignore the "cool" factor. A lot of kids starting out want to rock. An electric will just be more exciting to a young player, I would guess.

From Leo: I agree, it is pretty easy to find an electric guitar in the $100-$200 range that plays well. Most acoustics in the beginner price point are pretty rough. In addition, the first few months of lessons are rough to stay motivated, and if the student hates the instrument, the chances of progress are a lot less. A few sloppy power chords with ovedrive cranked can add some juvenile excitement.
My 1st was a Sears acoustic that was nothing but frustration, I saved money all summer for a Fender Strat, and actually learned to play.

I've always looked at it like learning to drive a car manual vs. automatic. If you learn automatic (electric) then it can be very difficult to go to manual (acoustic). Whereas the reverse is true, if you can get comfortable and calloused up on an acoustic (manual) then an electric feels like butter, you don't get fatigued nearly as easily and knobs and buttons take 3 seconds to learn and figure out... You're much more likely to end a rounded player, whereas if you start on an electric, then you're much LESS likely to get proficient or good on an acoustic...
I would think of picking vs fingerstyle with that analogy. As an electric and acoustic are tuned the same and basically the same thing.

Darrell Braun Guitar steel string acoustic. Had a nice beefy neck but needed a good setup before I was able to play smoke on the water. Switched to a fender starcaster strat and it was much better, but the neck was super thin
in reality i started on acoustic but i never really took the time to learn or properly play. i got my first guitar around 8 and up until 11 they were all cheap walmart or toys r us acoustics. i then stopped “playing” for 4 years and finally got an electric when i was 15. i went to guitar center on black friday and bought a 130 (it was 85 for the black friday sale) red worn cherry epiphone then i started teaching myself guitar properly. this was 2 years ago so i would probably call that my first guitar. i really didn’t know the difference between good and not so good guitars so at the time it was good enough, but when i finally got a new one with better quality i stopped playing on the old one.
Steel string acoustic with ridiculously high and painful action
I started playing on a classical guitar. I just started playing electric around last December and the switch hasn’t been as hard as I thought it would be. But I do regret not switching earlier because the amount of types of music you can play on an electric is endless.
I started with a brand-spanking new Epiphone strat way back in '86. I loved it... except that you couldn't serenade a chick properly with it unless you lugged your amp around like an idiot. On the other hand, Metallica and Megadeth.

I totally agree Darrell, it's Passion that drives you. After decades of playing the guitar, I still consider myself at the amateurish level. I have never been able to put it away, quit it or sell it. Although I have to admit nylon strings have to be the easiest on your skin
Great advice. I started on classical as someone leant it to me and it was free. I play electric and acoustic and still love classical. Your advice on a thin acoustic is great. I have had a dreadnought for 40 years and recently bought an Om - 14 and cannot believe how incredibly easy it is to play in comparison. Love the channel and the look of your Godin nylon / electric.
I started out with a Decca acoustic, the strings were 10 miles high! Being 7 at the time it was quite a chore pressing down strings. Plus I didn't know about string gauges, I had it strung up with Black Diamond strings(.13 to .56) in standard tuning (ouch!).It was a treat when I got my first electric and Ernie Ball SS's. I would def go with an electric just for the fact it's so much easier to play. Been playing 46 years now and it's provided a lot of fun in my life. It takes some time to learn, but the rewards can be great whether you play for yourself or play out in front of people. So buy a guitar, you never know till you try!

Go with electric I've been playing guitar since age 13...electric is just easier and forgiving...that will motivate you more in the beginning stages of learning the guitar.
There is nothing wrong in learning the acoustic first but its just a tad bit demanding physically and trust me there is a different learning curve for acoustic guitars.

For me i chose the acoustic guitar to have a challenge right away because I knew i wasn't going to give up because that wasn't an option when I got good with the acoustic I bought a more expensive electric guitar and it was like butter. So in my opinion start with acoustic because when you move to electric you'll be so much better than if you start with electric then want to play acoustic.

I HIGHLY recommend nylon classical guitar for many reasons.. 1st, it has wider neck therefore you will learn chords easily since you have more room for each finger (and helps you stretch your fingers better).. 2nd reason, it is much easier to play due to the shorter scale length or it could just be the strings being MUCH softer so it's much easier to fret a note AND it won't hurt your fingers due to the softness of the nylon strings. Not to mention it is simpler than electric and usually smaller than a typical acoustic. I would recommend a Yamaha C40/C40M or C70.. very cheap and they are actually good quality.. many have learned on these guitars and I'm one of them. I started this way and still love my classical nylon guitar. Acoustic, electric, and classical all have their distinct sound, but you can't beat a new set of Daddario Pro arte strings on a good quality classical. The heart and soul of the guitar is found here.

Nice video! My first guitar was on accoustic. I started playing electric a couple years ago and now I barely play acoustic. Accoustic is a beautiful guitar though, I'm just a sucker for electric guitar effects. I agree 100% with everything you have said!
I started playing a strat copy at about 13 years of age and needed an electric to take advantage of playing with my peers at that time. I couldn’t have joined the garage band with an acoustic. Over time I upgraded my electric guitar, however for one reason or another I stopped playing. Twenty-odd years later I got myself an acoustic. I think there’s a lot to be said for how easy it is to just pick up and play and learn complete songs that you can perform for friends. The acoustic works for me. A short scale could be a good option for someone who feels a dreadnought size is overwhelming.

If you wanna do Rock music on Acoustic Guitar I highly recommend using the lightest gauge of Strings like 9's (Ultra Lights).

I'm an adult but I have really short arms even for a girl. When I first started playing acoustic, it was really painful. My fretting fingers as well as right arm would start aching after 5-10 mins and I couldn't continue without taking a break. After a few months of persistence and practice, I can go on for more than an hour without feeling tired, and I've got those nice calluses on my fretting fingers now. Whichever instrument you pick, it's important to persevere.
Also, I think the type of music that you like is an important deciding factor. I chose acoustic because I'm more inclined towards folk and pop music rather than rock and roll. Some day I may switch to electric guitar though, cos it looks fun and the possibilities are infinite.

I started with finger style acoustic and I may not know a ton of songs but I’ve learned so many difficult techniques that I wouldn’t have learned this early if I started with an easier style. I say if you have the motivation to start with the hard stuff first than go for it.

Darrell Braun Guitar Some Electric Guitars have labeled control knobs so you know what they are. Lots of companies had bright ideas of Acoustic Guitars with an Electric Guitar feel which makes it easier to switch between the 2, & also facilitates playability (the added pickup makes recording easier).

Not enough time is a stupid excuse. We all have the same amount of time in a day it's about how you use it. No doubt if you want to learn guitar you will make time for it and spend less time watching tv, RUclips, social media etc. As for lack of talent, it's all in practice and dedication. Its been 11 months have you learned yet? If not start!! It's a new year!

Literally thought the same but I set aside 1hr to 2 hrs to play guitar every day and I have seen my progress skyrocket and so has my wife. She was blown away that I’m now learning solos. When you figure new stuff out it inspires you to keep playing. I’m so glad I found the guitar and I thank Slash for inspiring me to pick it up. Now I own a les Paul 😄

i've been playing acoustic and classical guitar since 13 years old,
and electric guitar since 15 years old
i mean, it doesn't really bother if you really want to play, all of them sound beautiful for me
( classical one creates peaceful sounding , you won't be bored when you practice it around-the-clock )
but i'd really prefer people who love guitar , grab a classical guitar like ( altamira, yamaha etc)
Both brands priced their products at the reasonable position, just grab and play if you decide to go with classical guitar
classical guitar does benefit you to build up every fundamentals of guitar, apart from its wide neck, i got ''medium-sized?'' hands,
so i really enjoy to play with the classical guitars' wide neck , you can also stretch the fingers while you're playing it
When you're growing , you'll just find out your collections will keep increasing, it's a rule, it's about digging out more of music !
one thing i don't like from classical guitar , is that , they're not built for bending, the tension is different from metallic strings
I'm an acoustic guy for the most part so there's your bias here, but i'm always glad I started with acoustic simply because i was decided on learning anyhow and it truly made me work for it which truly paid off in the long run I feel, actually not relying on anything else than the strumming and getting those first chords in, yes maybe discouraging possibly even more so on an acoustic I wouldn't know since I didn't do it otherwise, but if you are determined to learn no matter what the quote on quote adversity that comes with it builds you a solid foundation which doesn't rely on the electronic element, no offense lol...Plus that just means when you pick up an electric after you need only learn the controls and electronic component than you just tear down the floor with it..Anyhow I have always been of the opinion you should mainly choose the guitar which will accomplish the type of music you like, I was and am truly into feelgood folk music so no brainer for me

In my experience a acoustic guitar is best for starting out with.
It’s simple and basic, it provides the ear with natural tone so it gets use to hearing true intonation, it works the fingers and prepares the hand bh strengthening it and you can play it anywhere.
Electric guitars are really unforgiving and you will hear every mistake causing you to be more self conscious and effecting your desire to play.
The acoustic guitar gives you a playing field while keeping it basic so when you move on you’ll have more to work with rather then starting from electric and having no place to move on after learning the basic.
And it really tests the player to see how much passion they have for playing rather then just making sounds.
This is what I think anyway.
Started at age 33. On acoustic. Although I really LOVE the electric guitar sounds. I love both equally. IMO for singers or those that like to sing and play as I do I would would say start on acoustic. I started on a full size dreadnought and I’m a 5’7 guy with shorter arms and had no issues. But for younger smaller players I recommend a shorter scale and a smaller body. I did however start off with 9 gauge strings and worked my way up to 12 gauges. I recommend the smallest guage strings you can go with first playing. For me I prefer 12s now because I strum really hard. This also taught me how to efficiently change strings myself (another plus for acoustic). Imo if Just starting off find the one that’s easiest to play for YOUR fingers preference. IMPORTANT! I would also recommend buying your first guitar in store where an experienced tech can adjust the action to ensure the guitar is playable enough and has NO FRET BUZZ. Online you don’t know what you’re getting and can’t physically test. Then if you try to take the online one bought somewhere to get set up you’ll get the snooty remarks from the tech, “where did you buy this thing from?”
SINGERS FYI…you may find yourself getting rid of your first several guitars for the one that sounds best with YOUR voice. I did. Another advantage for the acoustic you can take it anywhere, no amp or electricity needed and pick it up anytime without plugging. I do have an electric now but for in general and singing I tend to pick up my acoustic the most.
You get some of the creamiest tones from your electrics.. Love it

I loaded it up with some Dimarzios. Got a Super Distorion in the bridge position and a Chopper in the neck. It sounds fantastic! Countless hours on that guitar! 🤘

Beautiful woods (being fond of the aesthetics of your instrument matters imho), very good factory setup, and man when you break in your fingertips and wrist first, you don't want the the acoustic steel string S&M thing to hamper your progression and throw you down.
Nowadays I play my steel string acoustic more often though, only because I like to cover more songs on it than on the electric. But man am I glad I learned barre chords on good ol' Pacifica, even on this tame baby it felt hard, don't want to even think what it would have been and how long it would have taken on a 13-56 gauge steel string acoustic.
Oh and about those people who are forced to play nylon when all they want to do is the Smells like Teen Spirit riff, my warmest sympathies. Nylon strings could make cry, but I would never have spent the hours I spent on my Pacifica on one of these.
Oh and I loved and still love to play an unplugged electric when just training and rehearsing, or when having insomnia. Easy on your ears and those of people around you.

I love the sound of both guitars when I watch them on videos, I have never played either ever but I wouldn’t mind starting on acoustic
I started on an acoustic. It was the cheaper route by far. And I didn't have to worry about things like amps, power and all that stuff. I could just pick up my acoustic and practice anytime, anywhere. Yah, it wasn't the easier route of the two, but man it strengthened my fingers real quick!
I joke about my Daphne Blue and Surf Green Strat obsession, which was initially true. As I learned to play my pretty guitars, I became absolutely fascinated with the Strat's versatility. I love being able to (or attempt to) play everything from Oldies to Black Metal. Swapping pickups to find the most versatile tone continues to be a lot of fun.

tom rabbani I'd say yes, the closest I have is Seymour Duncan SSL-5/SSL-5 with a JB Jr in the bridge, not the same as the full Humbucker, but still a nice thick tone.
I think I'll ask my parents for an electric guitar for Christmas. The only songs I listen to with acoustic are Ghost Riders in the Sky, and Ring of Fire. Everything else is rock, metal, and classical music (particularly Mozart).

I am into drumming, but somehow lost the motivation when I sold my electric drum kit when we moved to a smaller house. I couldn't fit the damn thing without sacrificing some stuff. So I decided to learn how to play the guitar, and I've been a metal fan since like forever. So I worked and saved hard to get my first guitar, It's a Jackson JS32T Rhoads, I'm a sucker for V style guitars, becuase I grew up listening to Megadeth. By the way I am 30 years old now. I think It's never too late to learn the guitar, if you have the passion.
I really love listening to you play an electric guitar. The clip of you playing the Ibanez at the beginning of the video and the one where you demonstrated the bridge pickup were amazing. Had a bit of Satriani and Vai in them. If you made a CD, I'd definitely buy it.

Years ago when I first started playing guitar I wanted to rock out lol I thought acoustic was obsolete and not as cool. As I have gotten older I play my acoustic more and more. Absolutely love acoustic guitar! Still think electric is the best and the coolest but acoustic I think can be more inspiring for someone who is a singer song writer... but I am NOT LOL.

I love the wide variety of possible sounds you can get with an electric, plus they look better (in my opinion), but on the other hand an acoustic is way more affordable and I'd rather fingerpick, which, from what I've understood, eliminates electric as an option, unless I've been misled and you CAN fingerpick an electric then it's a clear cut choice. I need help 😣
Ok, I was misinformed. I'm going for electric, the total set of equipment is a bit more expensive but I feel it's worth it. My first guitar and amp should be arriving sometime next month, I hope this journey is gonna end well!

Darrell Braun Guitar Electric Guitars are of course the easiest to learn but you can make Acoustic Guitars feel like Electric Guitars by using the lightest gauge of Strings & some Acoustic Guitars have Pickups (aka Acoustic-Electric Guitars) so you can hook them up to an amp. String gauge is another thing. Acoustic-Electric Guitars give you the best of both worlds cause of the lighter gauge strings, lower action, & even the cut away, & a thinner body such as those Taylors.
I'd say *build* your first guitar. It was truly test of my dedication when i built my first bass. You'll suffer in the process but damn i felt like a jedi padawan constructed his first lightsaber when i was done. Do not let the final product fool you though you're not done, now you have to master it, the initial dedication is now a feel of responsability to continue on. Go out, and try out different models and stitch up whatever you like the most in one instrument. If you gonna build an acoustic... may God have mercy acoustic chamgers are a nightmare.
Pro Tip: Bolted necks makes it easy neck adjustments via added wood pieces. And do not bother winding your own pickup at first(it's not hard but damn agonizing to find components like the magnets or super thing copper wire depending where do you live) Have a friend knows how to play the thing so you have a test dummy, Leo Fender didn't knew how to play too ya know! Heck maybe buy some kits you can assemble, i wish i had those where i live lol

I was in 4th grade when I wanted to learn guitar. I took some lessons at my school, but since I was young and had an acoustic, everything hurt! I’m 15 now and I still want to learn guitar! Unfortunately, I can’t afford a guitar (my parents don’t buy me things with their own money which is fine). If I had started electric, I think I’d still be playing today!

In my mind, this is not really important. I guess the bigger decision is how much you want to spend on what is basically an experiment to see if you like to play or you don't. The people that want to play guitar will play whatever you give them, and those who don't will not play even if you give them the best and easiest playing guitar in the world.
Case in point, my first guitar was this really really bad nylon string guitar, I still have it, and it sucks. But I played it for over five years, and I really liked to play guitar. My brother wanted to learn guitar a few years ago, and I have a nice strat now, a couple of nice acoustics, both nylon and steel. So he began on those, but he never really liked it enough to play them.
That is why I don't think that this choice is important, just my opinion.
Apples and oranges! You should have both. Most very young players start with a cheap acoustic, then - depending on the genres they most want to play - move next to an electric, and/or a quality acoustic most fitting for their favorite genre. But, unless you are committed to classical or flamenco, you will eventually own both.

I'm enjoying watching your channel. It's very informative, entertaining, and professionally done.That out of the way, I feel that the advantage of the acoustic guitar is what you show as its weakness. A new player wants to learn how to play cleanly, learn how to push down the string so that there's no interference, and a well set-up acoustic will do that. I just restarted my guitar-learning experience after a very long time of hibernation and bought, after thorough research, a Taylor A12e model. It's not the sexiest guitar, but it does what it's supposed to do very, very well. My last "beginner" guitar back in 2013 was a Martin D-28 Eric Clapton model, and that was just ridiculous for the task at hand. If I stick to it, I'll move up to a Martin again, eventually.
I tried a jumbo acoustic and abandoned it for being unwieldy and a decade later started again with a superstrat, merely purchased bc i can practice quietly. The difference in comfort is astounding. My next rig will very likely be an acoustasonic when/if i graduate to acoustic for similar reasons.

I started on a classical guitar (nylon strings) when I was 11 because I loved listening to Simon & Garfunkel on RUclips, and 4 years later I got an electric as I started listening to metal as well. Both is good!
Picked up my first electric a few months ago after having learned on and played acoustic for years. I’m a hard believer that everyone should start off on acoustic - it’s easier to pick up and play, easier to take with you, but also teaches the muscles to press down hard on the frets. But one thing I always felt on acoustic as I grew is how limited you are - an acoustic will sound pretty much the same all the time.
Transitioning to electric was like entering an entirely new universe - pedals, knobs, pickups, amps. A million different combinations to change the way your guitar sounds!
I agree, build hand strength with an acoustic to start, after that an electric will feel like cheating. Going the other way, from electric to acoustic, I would imagine would be terrible and you'd put the acoustic back down quickly without a chance to really build your hand muscles. You can build strength with an electric but would take longer I think. I went acoustic first when I started and think that's really the best way.
I bought myself a Gibson Firebird for my first guitar. I knew I wanted to go electric, and played everything in the store. Studio Firebird was definitely it for me. Had full size humbuckers and actual geared tuners unlike the normal Firebirds.

I started on a Nylon guitar that my grandpa lend me. That guitar was owned by a friend of my grandpa who died a few years before.
Some years later, my grandpa died, so i think I must gift it before I die to continue the cycle.
Stories aside, my second guitar was a Steel one. I like it, but not too much. My third guitar was an electric one, a black Spider (didn't know the brand before buying it) with 2 humbuckers. My amp is a Fender Mustang I (I'm always in a budget).
After 7 years, I play electric 98% of the time, so, I wish I started playing an electric guitar since the beginning.
Hey, thanks. Awesome video and great reasons on each. Honestly, it doesn't matter which one to use to learn the basics. The first year or two, all I learned were songs meant for acoustics but all I had was an old electric Squier strat. It is much easier to handle. If you want to learn, use either. just keep playing, learning, and saving for the one you want most. You are an amazingly talented guitarist! Very inspiring Keeps me wanting to continue practicing forever. 👍 👏
