In this video, I hike out to have a nice camp in the rain. I love to camp in the rain and I do it frequently. I was very excited to cook on the campfire and try out a plow point tarp shelter. I got a very unpleasant surprise, which you will see in the video.
I am a big believer that sometimes you have to know when to throw in the towel.

Hey Sam! I think that yellow wrapped/wrinkled paper was either a McDonald's wrap or Burger King or...ah-em a poo bag for a person if not a dog...?? You will not believe the crap I have found around my area hometown...and it gets me very angry because I have no idea why or how the junk got there in the first place.

Good video. A couple tips... A repair kit 😃, always carried with a inflatable pad.
You struggled a bit with the fire at first on that soppy ground. Use base logs much bigger, like 4-6 inches. By the time the fire burns down through them, the ground will be dry.
Set your plow point tip atleast eye level; you had a lot of water collecting on the tarp and much of the tarp was on the ground, limiting your space. By bringing it up a bit, it will help, and heat from the fire will circulate in if you was closer to the fire.
Lastly, a leaf bed isn't that bad. You still had the foam pad. For many years I camped w/o a pad and slept on leaf beds. Kinda a pain to build tho.
Great job going out in the elements when many people won't and sharing your mistakes as wll as the successes. I like honest and open channels with people just doing their thing 👍

Hi Justin! Lots of good advice in there, especially the tips on how to set up the plow point. This was my first time with that configuration and I thought it looked so simple, but there was more to it than I thought. I appreciate you watching bud!

    • @raleighthomas3079
      @raleighthomas3079 2 года назад +1

Good tips. Your tarp looked big enough that if you had the tip of the tarp 7 or 8 ft off the ground, you could have your fire under it to keep it protected from the rain. You would benefit from having your fire closer anyway. You could get more heat in your shelter, and keep the fire smaller to conserve fuel.

Hah! I made that same tarp setup mistake the first time I went winter (18 deg F and ~20 " of snow and still snowing!) tarp-camping, too. Also, after getting up (never got to sleep for more than a half hour or so) at 3-hour intervals to take care of business, on the third wake-up I said THWI; packed up at 0400 and walked out in the dark! Cheers!

This has got to be the most dismal, head shaking camping video I've seen out of hundreds, if not thousands. Wow. Mostly due to inexperience or lack of anticipation. Yet you will turn things like this into a learning experience, like we've all had to do. With experience, one learns to in-an-almost-paranoid way anticipate what can go wrong... with everything related to being out in the wild. Not always successful, but improved outcomes follow. You have the right ideas. Now, repeat over and over til you shine. I come from a high mountain wilderness search and rescue background, so have had this approach seared into my brain and body. Best!

Sam, awesome video as usual, bummer about the air mattress. I recently started using Tyvek as a ground sheet just for that reason, I go over it in my PA Turnpike Exchange 351 Urban Stealth Camp. Forget the axe, your Silky and machete is all you need. Batoning with an Axe is more dangerous in my opinion, you have more control with a knife, I use a BK-9.
Hiking in the dark can be tough unless you are close to a trail or have a point of reference, you can easily get turned around. Since you camp this area often, I would get some Trail Marking Tacks.
It's great that you give fellow RUclipsrs shout-outs, I am sure they greatly appreciate it, I need to do the same more often.

Dude that forgotten cemetery is so cool, I think we all at a certain point in life enjoy the little things that a lot of people around us have forgotten in everyday life. In a way we should feel bad for those people that don’t realize that. Anyways Thanks for the cool and fun videos! Stay safe and have fun out there sir. ✌🏻

Your videos always brighten my day Sam. When I read you ate half the pack of bacon it made me lol because I could eat it for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Don't blame you for not staying bro. I would have also. Appreciate the video. Can't wait for the next one buddy.

Sorry to hear about you air mat. I used a closed cell mat for years before inflatables came on the scene. Like your honesty.
    Stay safe 🔥

Thanks bud! I may have been fine without the inflatable mat in hindsight.

Knowing when to call it a day (or night 😏) and bail is a an important 'Survival Skill' as any other in one's Toolbox .. applicable in not only the Outdoors. There is always the next time.

They're so light I carry a large roll up Thermarest foam pad and a Zlite. Even if my nice air pad gives up and I'm not able to repair I can still be fine and pretty comfy. Besides I find so many uses for an extra pad in creature comforts I just make it a practice.
Sorry about your bad night put but at least you got out and gained experiance

Thanks for watching Aaron! On my next trip, I took two foam mats and it worked pretty well. You’re right they are super light. I may need to make that common practice in the future.
