A Fromsoft Roguelite is something I've been dreaming of since Chalice Dungeons in Bloodborne. Those were very half-baked and tedious but the concept was nevertheless genius and all they needed was some actual polish and effort put into them, and just from the trailer alone looks to be EXACTLY what they're doing with Nightrein.
Great video. I’m personally bummed by this news after the initial hype of the trailer. But happy for those who like this type of game. I’ll at least give it a try when it’s on sale.
I first had that experience with Vaati's videos after I played through Dark Souls 3. Was amazing hearing his story telling after I had already played through and was able to fill in the gaps and tie things together. So good.
The whole "asset flipping is bad" argument doesn't hold water to me. I agree with Max when he says it matters more if the gameplay is actually fun and if the end product is good. Asset flipping is not inherently bad. Look at a game like Legend of Zelds Majora's Mask. That game is LITERALLY all asset flips from Ocarina of Time and many people (including myself) consider it to be a great entry in the series. I've even heard people say it's their favorite despite containing mostly assets from Ocarina of Time. I'm excited for Nightreign because I think the concept of the gameplay sounds neat, new, experimental, and refreshing. If it's bad, it will be bad because the gameplay is bad not because of the assets like Max stated.
Yeah that entire rhetoric is an offshoot from gamers who don't actually understand how games are made, and while their heart is in the right place, they often forget devs are people who like their jobs and try to make the best product they can WITHIN limitations. If making entirely new assets weren't resource intensive and deadlines weren't so strict, obviously most devs would opt to make new ones. But that's not the reality of game dev.
Miyazaki 100% knows about the seamless coop mod and has said that perhaps in a future game they could adapt some aspects of that mod lol it was an interview like this or last year
People really need to get out the thought of every game needing to be game of the year material. Thats why gaming culture is so sad today. This is a fun side project arcade experience that may not be for everyone but will still be good to pass time. That's what a game is. And it looks like this project will hit that feeling perfectly. This is not a fromsoft miss, its a new game.
Multiplayer for souls games have been tied to lore elements that is pretty unique in terms summoning your friend in to help. Its good thematically but not practically when your just trying to party up the whole time. Otherwise it would be just making a lobby before going in game, or not sending the other player back after dying.
There’s actually a lot of customization. The JP press release has a lot of info about how they wanted to incorporate leveling builds and basically what amounts to skill trees to make sure that each individual player character has enough customization to keep in line with the main series, but it goes even further.
I think this is a perfect addition to ER tbh. A lot of people’s complaints with ER was the open world and how you have to wade through everything again to replay it. This game will be way tighter and more focused. I think playing preset characters is a fun shake up from the normal formula. People complain that From just makes the same Souls type game every time so this is a nice branch out from that.
I don't play rougelikes or multiplayer games, but I think this looks pretty sick and I am super down for devs to try smaller more experimental titles. They also said it would cost around the price of SotE, so anywhere between 30-50 bucks is right on the money
Nightreigns lore could be an amalgamation of many things and as a stand alone I'm ok with that. I can't help but think it brings greater meaning to "The Lands Between" as we will see Dark Souls bosses appearing. Fromsoftware hasn't let me down. I'm willing to give it go when it releases. I was just really hoping for more Armored Core. But who knows...if this succeeds I could see this adapted to AC some day.
All I’m gonna say is if this is successful be ready for one of the craziest alienations/splits between a fan base we have ever seen😂… I’m interested but can tell u right off the bat there is plenty here that should not be put into regular souls games
It sounds structurally alot like the game ravenswatch. Only with more variety due to the landscape and bosses changing each time. The core ganeplay is already rock solid so putting it into a new framework is a cool experiment as a side project. Definitely gonna try it
I have seen everyone compare this to Borderlands and other games.. But the closest thing I can attach this to; is the long forgotten Castlevania Harmony of Despair. In which you jump into classic maps with characters from every 2D installment, and you then have to essentially play a co-op level of castlevania. This includes fighting enemies and bosses from every Castlevania, and equipping items and weapons from chests found throughout. I believe the level is also slowly closing in around the centre which is normally a boss arena. I remember thinking how neat of an idea it was at the time, but the major killer was the playerbase. Because people felt like it was a knockoff of the OG titles, they all eventually fled back to the original titles. This made what was essentially a co-op experience, a complete ghost town. Which is entirely possible here. Regardless of how much this game could be soloable, this was built from the ground up to be a social experience. If that community dies down in favour of just replaying the original games again, this will probably go right along with it.
People saying this is a Fornite inspired title leads me to believe some players don't know much about roguelikes and rather spout missinformation for the sake of doomerism. A +30 run with random loot and ever changing map (just similar in structure/aesthetic), are typical in roguelikes. Not to mention that, according to different sources, you're not married to one weapon or style, the point is to literally morph your character during each run. Of course, this is a matter of execution. As long as it is polished, and has at least additional content, this will do fine.
The thought process is if the movement and formula response is well received then future games get a improvement to a lot of there systems and gather a larger crowd.
i like how you could approach the new game solo but the main bosses that are new being balanced around three people makes me a little anxious to hop in during the period between release and a balancing patch
Ya know I’d love if this game is not just a place to put From Softwares greatest hits of bosses but also the cut content bosses that didn’t have a place in the story or needed more time to properly develop from the past
I think regardless of this game being a big hit or mid this is good experience for fromsoftware team on implementing multiplayer functions/features for the longhaul. So I'm happy theyre taking the risk. Its healthy for game devs as well as the longevity of franchises to experiment to a certain degree
I have the weird feeling that Nightreign is something to give us within the 'realm of' Elden Ring until the true sequel comes out in maybe 3 to 4 years from now. Because we all know they'll make another Elden Ring given the incredible success it had. But Nightreign is there to keep our mind busy with a bit of 'extra' Elden Ring stuff in the meantime.
I think the balance aspect that you’re worried about won’t be too bad. There are graces, meaning that our flasks will be refilled. It will get harder as it progresses since we lose graces, but I think it will be pretty fair
I can kinda get why the lore heads would complain about DS bosses showing up, but from a gameplay aspect I don't see the problem. One thing I have heard people wishing for is a kind of "boss rush mode" a way to refight fun battles as much as we want with different builds and this kind of gives us it. Do your run fight fun bosses, change your character/relics/whatever and try it all over again as much as you want with some all stars from previous games. If there was a game type to do the asset flip the roguelike is THE place to do it openly and without shame.
Not sure if you've already seen it or if someone else mentioned it further below, but the devs already confirmed that this will be a single purchase game with no live service elements (battle passes, MTX, etc). They said it is targeted for a similar price as Shadow of the Erdtree (~$40). It might still get updates post-launch, since that's pretty normal nowadays, but once you buy the game you get everything, you just have to unlock it by playing.
I have been playing this series since Dark Souls 1. Demon Souls came later. That being said, I have put qell over 2000 hours into Elden Ring JUST leaving my summon sign down to help people kill bosses. Sending your sign to EVERY boss? That was the best shit ever. If this game is even just as good as being a Sunbro, it'll be great
I definitely feel like a lot of people are doubting, but Fromstoftware will def deliver something fresh and fun. This is probably the typa game to sit down and relax to play with homies, rather than dedicate hours of difficult gameplay. The environments, fights, abilities etc. will prob all be excitingly new, along with hella updates
I'll be playing it solo and I can't wait. I'm nearly 60 and love elden ring. I'm glad they are using what they've already built. I wish the youngsters today knew what it was like to have a new game come out, and not know anything about it, because of no interwebs. No one influencing you or judging your opinion. As for those moaning it's a cash grab, don't buy it and then don't worry about it. Have fun however you want to play it.
I will be shocked, SHOCKED! if there are no microtransactions for the game. It screams for it, but I hope From Software does the right thing. I definitely will try this game out, it's a must for any souls-like enjoyer!
Oh it's gonna be GOOD. Co-op, 3-player game with a 3-day cycle and 8 different bosses. The real question is how many hours can you put into it... but if I hit a minimum of 40h, I'll have been extremely satisfied.
@@Taint_Smasher 8 different FINAL bosses, or 8 different night lords. The only night lord we’ve seen as of now is the Cerberus dog, there are a bunch other field bosses and night 1 & 2 bosses.
@@deadstriker4415 Eight different Night Lords, indeed. If you think about it, Hades has five bosses in total (and a bunch of minis), but it's still got enough customization - for both character and stages - to go on for hundreds of hours. There are bound to be clauses to increase the game's risk and reward; I'd also bet on higher difficulty including new forms and movesets for bosses.
I'm not feeling this game. It just feels like an assortment of random Fromsoftware assets that have been re-tooled to create a more monetizable co-op game. I was initially excited by the possibility of a Dark Souls and Elden Ring crossover, but based on all the information that we've received so far, I'm not convinced that there will be any attempts to explain the sudden emergence of characters and elements from previous titles. Elden Ring is a great game, but I utterly despised how shamelessly copy and pasted some of the bosses were. Astel and Godrick were dramatically downgraded by their counterparts in the game. The possibility that they might do the exact same thing to Nameless King, one of the best bosses in DSIII, is pretty disappointing.
If there's one thing I don't agree with Max is that they don't want you thinking about the lore implications. I would agree if all they brought from dark souls was the bosses, but then why include a character like the ds3 fire keeper? That just screams lore implications to me.
I totally agree with the first playthrough of Elden Ring being amazing but replaying it can be a chore. The dread I felt when I learned that I have to recollect the Great Runes in New Game+ was indescribable. It really killed my motivation, especially getting to the Haligtree and killing Malenia AGAIN just to experiment with a Great Rune that’s only okay.
I'm glad this game has weapon loot mid-run, because the lack of it is the only thing I don't like about Hades. In Hades you only get the "blessings" of the Gods. In the fight between Hades and Dead Cells for the best rogue-like I always choose Dead Cells because of the hundreds of weapons you can find mid-run. I never understood why Max never played Dead Cells, even after the Castlevania DLC.
Man...when you have to explain ppl that Counter Strike and DotA started as free mods, made by community members....we old :( And yes, DotA was a WC3 map, which spawned a huge DotA clone time, with LoL right in there. The appeal of League, contrary to every other clone was simple. It was aimed at casuals, because you didn't lose your money on death. It's the only real big difference.
It seems to be Elden Ring's version of God of War: Valhalla, so nostalgia will carry a lot of people (Including me) But I definitely think that its gameplay loop is on that will keep a lot of people playing. One of Elden Ring's most tedious aspects to is running through the world to level up, so to be able to keep levels as you do more runs will be nice. Just hope that customization comes out in the future.
Exactly like that. Also there probably wont be any extra customization, but it has been confirmed that each character will have earnable skins with some level of customizability.
I think they did the right thing here. While i'd like a full co-op elden ring base game, what i truly want to do with elden ring co-op is kill a bunch of bosses with just enough of a leveling system to keep me feeling a sense of progress. If I had 1 friend alone to play with I'd like to play the full story through from start to finish but with 2 or more friends, especially ones who may put less or more time in than me, I want them to be able to play without either ruining things, going way back to their story point, or temporarily limiting or buffing one of us through the system to make it balanced. I want to have weapon or item loadouts to bring in and maybe make it so that I have to risk dying in a cave for a random loot drop if I want to come in with a sick katana instead of a base one.
Looking forward to it. Considering I've put over 100h+ into Hades 2 early access(amazing, btw), I can see myself spending a similar amount of time with this...IF it sticks the landing.
Definitely... but just not for me personally. It's like how people were so critical of Final Fantasy 16 even though it was a banger for the people who didn’t mind them changing the formula a bit.
I don't know what to think about this. I will wait to see more. I would love to see people doing coop on this, but I want to play solo for my own playthrough. Both options should be available.
One of the pcgamer articles referenced the creation of street fighter 2 turbo, and I feel like Nightreign is in the same boat. They saw what the modders were doing, and they decided to take their own crack at it as the official developer. I really want to call it Elden Ring super turbo.
@7:35 I agree. That's the one thing that is a small turnoff for me and why I probably won't spend a lot of time playing this. One of my favorite things about souls games is the customization and custom builds.
I'm super excited to play this game, I love soulslike, I love roguelike, and this is some combination of both, and it borrows from Dark Souls, Bloodborne, AND Elden Ring, i'm. So. FUCKING. ON BOARD!
This is my opinion, I think why FROM SOFTWARE is doing this I think it has to do with Miyazaki being interested in that Elden Ring mod for full on co op, so I think this is them testing it out to see if people rather have full on co op start to finish or if they want to be the solo warrior like most people are, because Miyazaki did say that he's considering to add that seamless co op to Elden Ring and to all future projects, and in my opinion I think this is gonna be a fun game, yes it's gonna be a boss rush game but if it's successful then people who just want to enjoy Soulsborne game's with friends from now on will be able to play with friends without having to do this specific thing or that specific thing etc, I personally would love seamless co op, my girlfriend love's these game's and I've a veteran fan of these game's and I personally would love for Miyazaki and FROM SOFTWARE to incorporate full co op into their IP's from now on especially Elden Ring, because not being able to use torrent while in co op is so exhausting, but with that mod and potentially if they add seamless co op then that won't be a problem anymore and then everyone can enjoy the Soulsborne universe
As someone who has put 500 hours into Elden Ring, doing random builds and who has at this point resigned to just playing randomizer mod over a Dover, this game is for me.
Warcraft 3 spawn Dota, which then Valva bought to make Dota2. but at the same time, the designer who made the original Dota got scouted by Riotgames, and he made League of Legends and release it before Dota2

@@Berssange55 It's simply bad business to have all of these very usable assets and just sit on them and create entirely new shit every single time, that's how you end of like Square-Enix with the Final Fantasy series taking exponentially longer between releases up until recently.
The game has a new director, it's not a Miyazaki game, there's nothing wrong with using their stuff to do a cool experimental side thing with an IP that is very strong. You're basically hating on some poor guys pet project in the company that got the green light. They literally just gave us SOTE so we know it's not like this is the new direction going forward.
@@Berssange55 If you are a fromsoft fan, you know they have always been reusing assets. This game wont even be full price and it sounds hella fun
Let me tell you this, in my experiance playing soulslike, i always wanted to have a game that mixes all of my favorite boss fights, i get the character creation attatchment, but common! A FROMSOFT official randomizer, with updates of maps, bosses, weapons, or "heroes" this shit is gonna be fun AF, and hopefully its fucking CROSSPLAY
🤡
It was confirmed to not have crossplay
@SpectreAdept fuck :( thanks tho
@@SpectreAdeptsauce?
yeah i realized im old as well, when most people dont know dota was a custom game for wc3 and counter strike was a half life mod.
So good.
Not sure if it will be incredible, but it will be good for experimentation and getting the team some new experience to improve their other games.
The YoVG sessions in this game gonna go crazy! !
Miyazaki 100% knows about the seamless coop mod and has said that perhaps in a future game they could adapt some aspects of that mod lol it was an interview like this or last year
Miyazaki is not the director for this game
U have the source?would love to read it
I think this is a perfect addition to ER tbh. A lot of people’s complaints with ER was the open world and how you have to wade through everything again to replay it.
This game will be way tighter and more focused. I think playing preset characters is a fun shake up from the normal formula. People complain that From just makes the same Souls type game every time so this is a nice branch out from that.
YES! People like me. Sometimes I wanna play ER but it's a commitment so this could be perfect
Add a Monster Hunter reward system. Craft weapons and armor from bosses. Unlimited grind.
Nightreing is the Tekken Tag of Souls, it's in the core of Bandai Namco to release that mix of characters games
2:38 you can call it fate, but it is absolutely hilarious he is saying all that while staring at centipede demon.
My literal thought process like..."Is he gonna mention that?"
All I’m gonna say is if this is successful be ready for one of the craziest alienations/splits between a fan base we have ever seen😂… I’m interested but can tell u right off the bat there is plenty here that should not be put into regular souls games
I can already see the clickbait videos "NIGHTREIGN is BETTER than Elden Ring????"
It sounds structurally alot like the game ravenswatch. Only with more variety due to the landscape and bosses changing each time. The core ganeplay is already rock solid so putting it into a new framework is a cool experiment as a side project. Definitely gonna try it
Watching this trailer is already making me miss Sekiro. The freedom in movement in that game is so good
I have seen everyone compare this to Borderlands and other games..
So what I'm hearing is risk of elders. Sounds pretty cool to me.
It’s a FromSoft game. Of course it’s going to be good.
I'm looking forward to this project from a distance mainly because the concept sounds too funny to ignore.
"Super Souls Brothers Ultimate"
Probably. Glad they're trying something different with their souls format. Id rather not just assume its bad because its different
i like how you could approach the new game solo but the main bosses that are new being balanced around three people makes me a little anxious to hop in during the period between release and a balancing patch
Besides Dark Souls 2 Fromsoft has never put out mid. This game will hit.
As someone who isn't the biggest online player with strangers, I'm glad there's a solo option it seems!
I personally never had an attachment to my souls character only sekrio cause he’s an actual character that has story to him
Ya know I’d love if this game is not just a place to put From Softwares greatest hits of bosses but also the cut content bosses that didn’t have a place in the story or needed more time to properly develop from the past
As someone who loves Capcom's Dungeons and Dragons and Elden Ring, I am already sold with Nightreign.
This game could be really fun if they keep adding to it with DLC. Like a new map, new bosses, new heroes, new weapons, etc.
49:33 Replaying Bioshock after the insane twist makes all the dialogue blow your mind.
Guarantee 99% of people calling it a cash grab are still gonna buy it
1% representin', lol
I have no question that from soft will deliver an excellent experience
Oh it's gonna be GOOD. Co-op, 3-player game with a 3-day cycle and 8 different bosses. The real question is how many hours can you put into it... but if I hit a minimum of 40h, I'll have been extremely satisfied.
8 different bosses? That’s it? BIGGGGG YIKES.
@@Taint_Smasher 8 different FINAL bosses, or 8 different night lords. The only night lord we’ve seen as of now is the Cerberus dog, there are a bunch other field bosses and night 1 & 2 bosses.
@@Taint_Smasher 8 final bosses, with an unkown amount of other field and end of day bosses that will be drawn from seemingly every game theyve made.
Fortifications and Traps would be a big attention getter for me with this type of gameplay. GOW horde mode had me hooked with the gameplay loop.
16:20 - so - this would mean that the "dota" was randomizer mods to elden ring and then Fromsoft made Dota 2 with Nightreign.
It’s just slop bro
Yeah, the duchess character i think is meant to hint about bloodborne too, just more discreetly since they dont have rights to flat out say it.
I bet this was originally an Armored Core idea, got passed over and revived with Elden Ring’s name recognition.
Max Vs Vaati
This is the best timeline indeed.
Max watching a Vaati video. Man what a crossover xD
I love souls and rouge like game, I couldn't be more excited for this game tbh and I really hope they take the co op elements into the future
Man...when you have to explain ppl that Counter Strike and DotA started as free mods, made by community members....we old :(
And yes, DotA was a WC3 map, which spawned a huge DotA clone time, with LoL right in there. The appeal of League, contrary to every other clone was simple. It was aimed at casuals, because you didn't lose your money on death. It's the only real big difference.
It seems to be Elden Ring's version of God of War: Valhalla, so nostalgia will carry a lot of people (Including me)
But I definitely think that its gameplay loop is on that will keep a lot of people playing.
Dude Valhala was awesome becouse it was pure combat which was the best thing about Ragnarok.
Medevil Helldivers 2 is basically what this looks like.
It’ll probably be fun in short bursts. I can’t see this having much long term staying power without regular content updates.
Guess we are gona have a lot of Patches situations, (players enters, Players leaves :😄) on the Namless King boss
If they implement a solo mode, i am sold, monster hunter is a multiplayer game but it's very fun solo, i hope it's the same
Less time creating assets = more time on game/combat/mechanical/world development which means many times more features.
I out way more hours into roguelikes thant souls likes and I put time into both, So this one might make me a hermit.
Thank you for your thoughts on this max
Im excited about this game. Idk if it'll be a long time play for me but im all for devs that make very rigid game types trying new things.
it actually helps if you dont touch Elden Ring for like 6-12 months and then play it again its less of a chore
I guarantee that the modders will craft beautiful things in this game.
Bandi has tried this weird experimental stuff before. This is Soulsborne: The Breakers
Not really interested in this, but I’m sure it’ll be good for those who wanna give it a go.
